‘Blockchain Revolution’ Comes to Wall Street at Nasdaq Event

The father and son authors of the new book “Blockchain Revolution” took to the stage this morning where Nasdaq opens and closes its market to discuss their latest work.

Kicking off a panel discussion with several industry leaders, Don Tapscott and Alex Tapscott took turns discussing how the management structure of some of those very same companies could be disrupted by distributed ledger technologies like blockchain.

The elder Tapscott set the stage for the conversation with a point-by-point explanation of why he believes blockchains can do to the management structure of companies what bitcoin and other applications are doing to value exchange.

DLD: Blockchain and FinTech Startups Can Change How We Deal with Money

Michael J. Miller of PC Magazine wrote about the DLD Conference:

Changes in financial technology were a major theme at the recent DLD NYC conference, starting with presentations from Alex and Don Tapscott on blockchain technology.

Alex Tapscott began with a primer on blockchain technology and how it was different than most Internet technologies. In most cases, the Internet is about sending copies of information, but that’s not true for currency. “It’s ok to have a printing press for documents, but not for money,” he said.

[…]

Don Tapscott noted that in recent years we’ve seen the middle class decline for the first time in a century, as the digital age ended up producing big value for only a few. He said the “Internet of value” with peer-to-peer transactions gives people another shot.

How Will Blockchain Change Banking? How Won’t It?

This is an adapted excerpt from the recently released book “Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin Is Changing Money, Business, and the World.”

Our global financial system moves trillions of dollars, serves billions of customers and supports a global economy worth more than $100 trillion. Imagine what it could do, were it not in such shoddy condition. It is antiquated, a kludge of industrial technologies and paper-based processes dressed up in a digital wrapper. It is centralized, vulnerable to data breaches, systems failure and terrorist attack. It is exclusive, denying billions of people access to basic financial tools. It is opaque, baffling monetary policy makers and financial regulators, thanks to the compartmentalization of oversight. And it is monopolistic, lobbying for the status quo and stifling disruptive innovation.

Enter blockchain, the vast global distributed ledger running on millions of devices and open to anyone, where not just information but anything of value — money, equities, bonds, titles, deeds, contracts and virtually all other kinds of financial assets can be moved and stored securely and privately– and where trust is established, not by powerful intermediaries like banks, governments and technology companies, but rather through mass collaboration and clever code.

How Blockchain Technology Can Reinvent The Power Grid

The Internet of Things is challenging regulated utilities.

A power pole collapses at 8 p.m. on a hot night in the remote outback of Australia. This is a problem for William and Olivia Munroe, who raise sheep and cattle 100 miles outside an old gold mining town on the edge of the Great Victoria Desert. In the summer, the temperature frequently soars close to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Their children attend school via satellite link, the family’s only means of accessing health services in case of illness or emergency. Although the Munroes have a backup generator, it can’t power the water pumps, communications, and air-conditioning for long. In short, their lives depend entirely upon reliable energy.

Trust and Verify: The Coming Blockchain Revolution

Kevin Maney of Newsweek writes:

Blockchain today might be like the internet in 1993: a decade from now, you’ll wonder how society ever functioned without it, even though most of us barely know what it is today.

Some fascinating blockchain sprouts are poking through these days, such as one company that lets anyone act as a bank teller and another that could tell you every person who has ever owned a particular diamond—a handy way to make sure you don’t wear a ring that helped finance the civil war in Sierra Leone. Still other blockchain concepts could challenge Uber and Facebook down the road.

Time for a Blockchain Revolution. What?

Robin Whalen writes about Don Tapscott and Blockchain Revolution on the Canadian Marketing Association website:

I was fortunate enough to see Don Tapscott speak at the second executive breakfast from the two-part CMAideas series this past week. I’ve read some of his books in the past and have always been fascinated by his ability to decipher trends that have the ability to fundamentally change how we behave, spend, interact, shop, you name it. So when I was invited to this last event, I obviously jumped at the chance.

Now I’m going to take a wild guess here. Not many marketers are overly familiar with Blockchain. Personally, I had a Wikipedia level knowledge on the subject. I probably still do but nonetheless, I’m better off than I was before seeing Tapscott’s talk. So what is Blockchain? And what is this Revolution we’re hearing about? I’ll try and break it down here for you…

How the Tech Behind Bitcoin Will Change Your Life

It appears that once again, the technological genie has been unleashed from its bottle. Summoned by an unknown person or persons at an uncertain time in history, the genie is now at our service for another kick at the can—to transform the economic power grid and the old order of human affairs for the better.

We’re not talking about the social web, artificial intelligence, big data, robotics or even self-driving cars. We’re talking about the blockchain, the technology behind digital currencies like Bitcoin. Block. Chain. OK, not the most sonorous word ever – it sounds like a combination of blocking and tackling and chain gang. Sonorous or not, this technology represents nothing less than the second generation of the Internet, and it holds the potential to transform money, business, government and society. Let us explain.
