Cult Favorite Tomb Raider Spin-Off is Finally Getting a Sequel

Cult Favorite Tomb Raider Spin-Off is Finally Getting a Sequel:
Rise of the Tomb Raider wasn’t the only new Tomb Raider game announced this morning. It was also revealed during Microsoft’s E3 event that a long-awaited sequel to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is in the works.

Meanwhile, this is an announcement I can totally get behind. The first game was a blast. Here’s hoping for more of that.

Rise of The Tomb Raider Shows A New Side of Lara Croft

Rise of The Tomb Raider Shows A New Side of Lara Croft:
Looks like the Xbox One is getting a new Tomb Raider—and in this one, Lara Croft seems haunted by her past experiences (the trailer shows Croft in what appears to be a therapy session). Interesting!

In a press release, Square Enix’s Darrell Gallagher said, “With the power of the new generation, and our proprietary Foundation engine, our high octane action moments will be even more epic. Multiple locations around the world will be filled with exploration spaces that are some of the most beautifully hostile places on earth and over three times larger than we could achieve before. Our digital actors will rival CG quality, and after hearing the cry from our fans loud and clear, we will put the tombs back into Tomb Raider, all in our gritty Survival-Action style.”

After seeing the trailer firsthand, I think that the therapist is only an introductory mechanic, but we will have to deal with Lara’s inability to deal with the traumatic events of the first game. While I appreciate the fact that they’re recognizing that the first game was incredibly brutal on the main character, I don’t want to have to continue to revisit that. Again, and this is as a fan of the franchise, I don’t want to have modern grittiness in my tomb raiding. I want adventure and exploration. However, it does certainly seem to have a grasp on the scope of Lara’s exploration, which gives me hope. I’ll be playing it with caution, as the reboot was essentially the video game version of Man of Steel: needlessly violent and missing the aspects of Tomb Raider that made it great.

"Read comics. All comics. And then cut them open to steal their power."

“Read comics. All comics. And then cut them open to steal their power.”

-

Warren Ellis (via comicquotations)

This is a statement that affected my writing style. Once upon a time, I had no “style” except to tell the story. Chapters would vary in length, the prose would be stilted, etc. Then one day I sat down to write a book using the comic method: 12 chapters to represent 12 issues of a comic storyline, each chapter being a certain number of pages and no more. The plot centered itself, every chapter had drive to it, and I felt like I was filling in an outline instead of trying to figure out what shape I was going for. Now, even though I don’t use 12 chapters specifically, I still maintain a strict chapter page limit when I write to keep my aim focused. Think of your chapters as comic book issues, and you only have so many pages to tell your story and bring the reader back. It works. And it’s fantastic for streamlining the fat from the tale.

The Pirates Official Posters

What is this glorious looking glory.

Not down with pirates, but these posters look amazing. Might having me singing a different tune.

What is this?  And why are they all so gorgeous?  I googled the title and the release year but found nothing.  I want to see it, though.

This looks amazing!
