Divine’s Summer Blog Hop 2016: My Favorite Summer Memories
Hello, everyone!
How is your summer going so far? I know some people are dealing with really hot temperatures and forest fires. I hope you are all safe. Here, in the Pacific Northwest, summer is really just beginning. Today, was one of the first truly glorious days we’ve had since I moved back here at the beginning of the month. And this week is supposed to be fantastic. So I’m planning on going for a lot walks and, with luck, even get some beach time in. And what’s my favorite thing to do on the beach? Read, of course!
When my children were little, I loved taking them to the beach. It was such a rare treat, and one we all enjoyed. They would run around, splashing in the water (waves if there were any), make sand castles, look for marine life in the rocks, and SMILE. Yes, when we went to the beach, my sometimes surly children would smile. And that made me a very happy mama. So here are some photos of those little faces with big happy smiles.

Adrenaline surging through her system, Erica hung onto the doorjamb as the quake rocked the old courthouse. The building swayed and groaned, windows rattled and shattered as the earth continued to tremble. Erica thrust herself through the open door to her office and back into the hall. Her arms outstretched on either side, she bounced from one wall to the other like a Ping-Pong ball. But at least she was moving in the right direction. Crashes and bangs drew her down the corridor to where most of the offices were located, as well as the large lunchroom. Dear God. Had Chloe gone to check out the offerings in the vending machines?
When she reached the older part of the building and saw the full extent of the damage, Erica’s heart shuddered like the courthouse itself. This entire section of the floor looked like a war zone. “Chloe!” she called, her chest contracting so tightly her voice came out a mere squeak. She filled her lungs with the dust-choked air and tried again. “Chloe, where are you?”
Tears burned her eyes and a sob constricted her throat. Chloe was by herself. Alone. Her little girl needed her. And she needed her little girl. Needed to know she was safe.
The shaking finally stopped.
“Thank God.” Blinking to clear her vision, Erica picked her way around fallen walls, ceiling tiles, and light fixtures, avoiding bits of sharp metal and live wires that sizzled like rattlesnakes. “Chloe! Can you hear me? Don’t move. Don’t touch anything. Mommy’s coming.” She could only pray that Chloe was somewhere safe and not trapped under all the rubble. Or worse.

Romancing the Capital 2016 – the Truth Behind All the Smiles #RTC2016
Romance is indeed alive and well in Ottawa, Canada, home of one of the world’s hottest politicians. Uh-huh, you know who I mean! Here’s a little reminder should you need one.
So, with a prime minister who looks like this, Canadian romance writers are bound to be getting a few ideas. And they certainly didn’t disappoint. This was my second year attending the Romancing the Capital conference. Last year, I attended as a reader, but this year, I snagged one of 50 coveted spots for authors. I arrived in Ottawa on Thursday evening and met my roommates: Angie, Charlotte and Tricia (she’s an author too). These ladies quickly made me one of their own and the insanity began! After drinks at the bar, we watched the hockey game that would not end (Sharks vs Predators). I mean, seriously? 3 periods of overtime? Really? Didn’t they know we had to get up early?!
Friday began with a 9:00 am panel called The Many Shades of LGBT Romance with Nathan Burgoine, Angela Stone, Kayleigh Malcom, Elizabeth Lister, and myself. We covered a lot of ground discussing our works and answering questions from the audience regarding publishing, self-publishing, and our favorite and least favorite tropes. We also talked about the gay-for-you trope, which happens to be one of my favorites, but it also often done in a way that is, shall we say, a bit unbelievable. We discussed bisexuality and how it is often under-represented in LGBTQ romances. I talked about how Hollywood, one of the heroes in Lover on Top is bisexual, and that it’s this very bisexuality that kept him from really understanding the duality of his desires. Kayleigh and Angela both talked about some of their stories, which include menage and some F/F.
Following the panel, I attended Angela Stone’s The Science of Sex workshop. I think this was one of the most informative workshops I’ve ever attended. In her other life, Angela is a registered nurse who specializes in sexual education for teens and adults with disabilities and, if I recall correctly, she also works with people in the LGBTQ community. Angela opened the discussion by quickly setting everyone at ease and handing out sex toys to anyone who asked a question. Seconds later, all hands were up! I asked a question about whether women with spinal cord injuries could achieve orgasm and what were the best positions for them. Anyone know why I asked this question? Think of the characters in my Deadly Vices series. Yes, some day I will write her story. My gift for asking a question: this awesome vibrator. Yes, of course, it’s for RESEARCH!
Next, I attended the 50 Shades of Fun workshop, hosted by Opal Crew and Sharon Page, where we played games with a cowboy, a biker, a private investigator, and a doctor. Meet our heroes! We sure tied that private dic up tight! I’m thinking we had an ex-sailor or two in our group.
I had a ton of fun at this workshop and looked like a perfect fool doing so, as can be seen in these photos. The first photo is from a game where the hosts called out pirate, damsel, or vampire. For each, we had some action to do and something to say. Can you guess what’s happening in this shot of me and Angela Stone? I made it to the last four, at which point they stopped the game because the other two ladies knocked each other to the floor in their enthusiasm. We all got a prize. The second photo is a game like “musical chairs” but instead, when the music stops, we had to touch one of our heroes.
Afterward, I was up for more fun and games, so I went to Cynthia St. Aubin and Shana Gray’s Perfectly Perverted workshop. Here, we played games that involved hitting things with our balls, penetrating each other’s toilet paper rolls with a plunger (get your minds out of the gutter!) and popping unpoppable balloons with our asses. Sadly, the balloon won. On the bright side, I won one of Cynthia’s books, so all’s well that ends well.
Finally, I went to Susan Stoker’s Test Your Military Knowledge workshop. Being the daughter of a Canadian Forces officer and having lived in the US for many years, I thought that I could beat this game. Oh yeah. Well… Susan is a mean one. With her best-friend Google, she found questions that only the most savvy military fanatic could answer. “How many full generals are there in Canada?” We guessed nine. Good answer, right? Fuck no. There’s one. Yeah. One. LOL! Susan was a good sport though and made sure everyone got a prize. (Yay! Participation.) I got one of her books, so I’m stoked! (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
That evening was the Cowboys night. I didn’t do costumes, but my fab roommates did!
After dinner and dancing, we returned to our room, where with the help of my roommates, I selected about 50 BDSM and erotic words for my lucky peeps to draw on small whiteboards at 9:00 in the morning. ‘Cause nothing says fun like trying to draw blow job at the ass crack of dawn!
The next morning after a half cup of coffee, I went to my own workshop Whip Up a Picture. Here I am talking about my books with these fabulous people who came to my workshop. Some had read my books before and some were knew. I think a few might have even been shocked. That was fun.
Jeez, I even look like a teacher! LOL Tricia helped me moderate because we split peeps up into two groups so everyone had a chance to draw.
We had a ball! I handed out T-shirts and charm bookmarks to the six attendees with the dirtiest minds. And one person, Dania, won my Six-Alarm Sexy basket.

Following my workshop, I dashed off to Kali Willows and Kacey Hammell’s Author Speed Dating event. Now this was some serious reader-author face time! The authors sat at chairs in a U-shape, while readers sat across a table from us. Every two minutes, the readers moved one seat down. We were 25 authors and 50 or so readers. Let me tell you something, two minutes is REALLY short! I was lucky to be sitting at one end of the U, so I only had one author beside me, the wonderful ‘Nathan Burgoine. Every now and then, he’d shout, “Welcome to the gay table!” It was awesome. At the end, a ton of baskets were handed out, including my romantic suspense basket.
After a quick lunch of Hawaiian pizza, I went down to the ballroom to set up for the big book signing! I always look like a goon in these photos. Goon or not, I had copies of this very pretty print version of Aftershocks to hand out (for free) to my visitors. If you come see me at my next signing, maybe you’ll get one too! That gorgeous banner beside me is Kayleigh Malcom’s. Just seeing it makes me want to read her books. Yummy!
After all that work, it was time to relax with an 80s and prom night dinner and dancing. The photo at the top of this post is one we took there. The hosting authors provided this really fun “photo booth” that produced some really great images. The first is me and Kali Willows, followed by Eve Langlais (the crazy organizer of this mad-cap event) with her minion, and Tricia with the blues brothers. All in all, this was a fabulous event for readers and authors. Giving in to much pressure from all the happy attendees, Eve has agreed to host RTC again next year (2017) in August, this time. I can’t wait!!

It’s release day for Lover on Top! I’m so happy this day has come, and that you are all here to share it with me. As many of you know, this is my first foray into the amazing world of m/m romance, but it will certainly not be my last. Before I go on to tell you about Lover on Top, let me tell you a little bit about the photo of Matt Schiermeier and Cameron Earnheart that graces the cover. Two and a half years ago, I was surfing Facebook and came across this photo from photographer Andre DeLoach. I had an instant connection to it. I knew that this was Chad and Hollywood. The detail, the love on their faces, the trust in their embrace. It was perfect. The only question was, could I actually afford a photo of Matt Schiermeier? Fortunately, Andre and I were able to work out a deal and I licensed the image from him.
I’ve kept a printout of it on my desk as a way of motivating myself. I let the story grow in my head as I finished up others that were earlier on my schedule. And then, finally, last spring, I was able to get most of it written. So, why is it only coming out now? Almost one year later? Well, because life got in the way. I’m back now, though, and raring to go. I have many other stories waiting to be written, including a possible spin-off series featuring some of our favorite gay Seattleites. I hope you’ll join me on that adventure as well!

Hands on his head, Hollywood paced back and forth between Chad and the neighboring building like a caged lion. “I’m confused. It’s your fault. You and your tight ass. Your tattoos. And don’t get me started on your little twink boyfriend.”
“My boyfriend?” There was no way Chad could follow Hollywood’s leaps of logic.
“Fucking cowboy told me about it. You slept with Blondie. It was that same night with Candy, wasn’t it?”
Chad clenched his jaw. “Sandy.”
“Who the fuck cares?” Hollywood shouted.
“Why are you so upset?” Chad asked. “You’re straight.”
“I don’t know what the fuck I am. You’ve got me watching gay porn. Fantasizing about—” Hollywood gnashed his teeth together and rubbed his face with both hands. The sound of his stubble scraping against his palms had Chad’s heart rate shooting up. Even when he was a mess, Hollywood was hot.
“What do you fantasize about?” Chad couldn’t help asking any more than he could help the rasp in his voice.
Hollywood stopped his pacing, hesitated, then advanced on Chad. Each step slow and deliberate. Chad sucked a breath into suddenly deflated lungs. Oh God. He was so fucking turned on. And what kind of slut did that make him? He didn’t know if Hollywood was going to kiss him or beat the shit out of him. All he knew was that he needed to find out.
With rough movements, Hollywood grasped the sides of Chad’s head. “I can’t think of anything except kissing you. Your lips, are they soft or hard? How would your stubble feel against my skin? What do you taste like? It’s driving me crazy.” He stared into Chad’s eyes. “You are driving me crazy.”
Chad couldn’t believe this was happening, tonight of all nights. He wanted to kiss Hollywood, and so much more. But… “We—we can’t.”
“Why not?” Hollywood got closer so their chests were touching. Chad inhaled the scent of Hollywood’s skin, his soap, that delicious undernote that was his alone, and he shivered. If Hollywood pressed into him anymore, he’d know exactly how much Chad wanted him.
“You’ve had too much to drink. I can’t be an experiment.” His voice broke. He cleared his throat. “I can’t be someone you just brush off as a drunken mistake.”
“I’d never do that to you.” Hollywood slid his fingers into Chad’s hair, the gentle caress almost bringing him to his knees, a position he’d have been happy to assume were the circumstances right.
“You say that now, but what about tomorrow?”
Hollywood’s lips curled into a pout that would have had Chad laughing if it hadn’t been so sexy. “You promised. You said three days. Three days is now.”
Every cell in his body craved more of Hollywood. Still, he shook his head. “No.” They were both stronger than this.
“You can’t make me wait anymore.” Hollywood pressed their foreheads together and leaned his weight into Chad. His erection dug into Chad’s belly.

Hollywood’s focus rose to Chad’s eyes, and held. “I know what I want now.”
Unable to believe, hell, unable to think, under the force of that seductive green assault, Chad’s blood roared southward. He licked his lips. “And what’s that?”
The fire in Hollywood’s eyes flared, turning Chad’s blood into lava as he waited, feet on the edge of a cliff, for Hollywood’s response.
“You.”
Chad swayed. “Oh boy.”
Stepping back, Hollywood chuckled, clearly aware of his effect on Chad. “Get that look off your face. I’m keeping my hands to myself tonight.”
“All night?” The words barely out of his mouth, Chad winced at the disappointment in his voice. But, Jesus, he was disappointed. For months now—no, if he were being honest, it had been years—he’d been dreaming of what it would be like to hold Hollywood, to kiss and touch him, to sink his cock between those muscled ass cheeks. Not that he expected to do all that tonight, or anytime soon, but something. Christ, he needed something.
Hollywood gently tapped his cheek and snorted. “At least until after dessert, Loverboy.”
Loverboy. Chad felt as though he’d entered some kind of twilight zone or an alternate universe where a determined, confident Hollywood said all the things Chad desperately wanted to hear. “Is that what I am to you?”
Hollywood brushed two fingers along the edge of Chad’s hairline and wiped away the beads of sweat popping out as Chad’s heart hammered faster and faster. “It’s what I’d like you to be.” He moved closer and, slipping his hands under Chad’s topcoat, pushed it off his shoulders.
Chad shuddered as the coat slid down his arms and dropped onto the carpeted floor with a muted thud. Taking a deep, calming breath, Chad leaned in so his chest was almost touching Hollywood’s. “Where is all this self-assurance coming from?”
He hoped like hell this new version of Hollywood stuck around, because this man was hot-as-fuck. Not only did Hollywood not take the expected step back, he took one forward, pressing their chests fully against each other. “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the past couple of days.”
“Oh, yeah? And?”
Hollywood grabbed Chad’s ass and ground against him. “And I’ve missed you.”
Feeling Hollywood’s hard-on against his own, Chad’s head reeled. He’d missed Hollywood too. So fucking much. And here they were, hard cocks rubbing together.
