I don't really talk TO my characters as myself-we don't exist in the same worlds and it would be a very strange conversation. But I have one or two where I am more likely to take their role in my head and have conversations with other characters. They may or may not end up the book verbatim or at all, but they always say something interesting to me about the characters, whether it's discussing a movie (Alan and Elaine from "Strange Roads" would have a very interesting time watching "Star Wars" together) or talking out a plot point between characters who don't interact during the book. When I say I write about the people who live in my head, I'm only half kidding!(less)

I will poke and write a line or two, even when I'm not especially inspired. And if it go on a tear, unless I'm genuinely in a situation where I *have* to stop (I'm on the train and we're at my station and I have to get up and move) I will keep writing. I don't find forcing myself to be hugely productive, as I often have to go back and rework or throw out what I've done while feeling blocked or rather uninspired, but the important thing is tog get even just ten more words on the page to maintain forward momentum.(less)

John Bellairs
“He invented the Fuse Box Dwarf, a little man who popped out at you from behind the paint cans in the cellarway and screamed, "Dreeb! Dreeb! I am the Fuse Box Dwarf!" Lewis was not scared by the little man, and he felt that those who scream "Dreeb" are more to be pitied than censured.”

“He held the book up to his nose. It smelled like Old Spice talcum powder. Books that smelled that way were usually fun to read. He threw the book onto his bed and went to his suitcase. After rummaging about for awhile, he came up with a long, narrow box of chocolate-covered mints. He loved to eat candy while he read, and lots of his favorite books at home had brown smudges on the corners of the pages.”

“There was one big rule in life - the things you worried about never happened, and the things that happened were never the ones you expected. Not that this bit of advice helped Johnny much. It simply meant that he spent more time guessing at what the unexpected disasters in his life would be.”
John Bellairs, The Mummy, the Will, and the Crypt

Aaron Allston
“Oh, wonderful. I killed his father. He hates me. He knows how to make bombs. Come on, Wedge, how does this story end?”
