Book Hangover

Hi,

So the edits of Bk 2 in the 'Winds of Fire' series are over and I'm breathing. Breathing. Breathing.

But something's missing. I can feel it in my veins. In my blood. A call that something doesn't quite feel right.

It's called a book hangover. I've been living with these characters and I've been immersed in the lives of these fictitious people for so long now - 10 years - that I feel empty without them. The story is over - in this book, that is. The next one waiting to be dealt its fate.

In the meantime I'm not sure how to go on. I mean I have a real life... oh yes! A very busy one too with 2 kids, a loving husband and a puppy Shih Tzu. But there's another side of me... the writer in me that's at peace. And also at unease now.

I guess this will take some time to get over. Perhaps I should read another work of fiction, or begin writing another blog post that's due next week... or....

What do you think I should do? How do I get over my own book hangover?

Decatur Book Festival event

Hi,

So the Decatur Book Festival took place over the weekend and it was interesting. When I say that I mean precisely. It was my first time participating in a book festival of this scale and sharing a tent with about 100 other new authors in the 'Emerging Author' tent.

My wonderful author friend, Larissa Reinhart, shared the tent with me too and we spoke, one after the other, to the audience.

The book signing took place just after and I enjoyed getting to know Larissa, watching my husband smile with glee as he bought her book and had it signed by her... and sharing DUTY AND DESIRE with other potential readers out there.

What I wished I'd had more time for was listening to other authors pitch their work... but I guess you can't always do it all under one tent.

Great event. Loved participating in it and look ahead to more!

Over The Moon Edits & Editor!!

Hi,

So I've got the Decatur Book Festival this weekend and the final edits from my copy editor and she's thrilled! It's over! I'm thinking she's thrilled it's over!

I fail to understand how she could love re-reading and re-working a high-octane scene that I must have read--what 25--times now?

It got to the point yesterday afternoon where I couldn't think of the right sentence. Yes, one sentence! And dozed off in my chair. I woke up fifteen minutes later, saw the laptop beaming away at me - basically waiting for me to fix that damn sentence - and I completed my nap instead.

Then this morning I get a lovely email from my editor saying the last 2 scenes I emailed yesterday are good to go. It's done! For her. For me... it means working on the manuscript again - the added bonus of 2 documents this time on 2 split windows - and hunting with a microscope again for track changes and issues.

If I don't use a microscope I won't see the errors, right? That's what half of me says. The other half says... you didn't persist with this for 9+ years for nothing. You persisted on making it the best. You're almost there. Now get in that chair and start to work!

Oh well!

Decatur Book Festival

Hi,

So I'm thrilled because the Decatur Book Festival is just 5 days away and my talk time is scheduled for Sat, Sept 1 @ 10:20am. Then I have the booksigning at 10:30am.

I have a 5 minute talk time on stage and 3 mins are to talk... the other 1 minute is on and off stage.

I've been thinking about what to say, how to present DUTY AND DESIRE and my pitch. There are so many themes I can touch upon, so many issues to address. But I have to find the right one. I have to strike the right chord with the potential readers out there.

I have to think hard... and sometimes the book takes you places you least expected.

Keeping fingers crossed that I'll know what to say!

Honor & Love of reading!

Hi,

So I'm officially over the moon again! I received a warm welcome from my copy editor for receipt of the the 2nd book and then....
She wants to read the entire book again AS A READER... after having gone through it once (with track changes), twice (the rewrites)--I mean can you believe that? I certainly can't!

It's an honor! Such an honor! A privilege to know that a labor of love isn't just mine alone... but another woman from a different background, of different origin, experiences and shaped by a different set of values, wants to read the 2nd book again for the sake-no wait! LOVE of reading!

It's taken me the entire weekend and 3 days to digest this news... and I can't wait to see what she finally says as a reader.

Until then I'm reading-no, actually,- writing the next blog post for my blog tour next month!

Happy Reading!
