LITERARY ADDICTS Weekly Wednesday Meme: Best Beach Read!
What’s been the best beach read ever in my humble opinion?
This is another challenging one. I harken back to my teen years when there was always a Danielle Steel or Rebecca Brandewyne. But the absolute best series I ever enjoyed while soaking up the sun on the beaches of Ocean City, NJ were the Daughters of England books.
This series of 19 books by Philippa Carr (one of the pseudonyms for author Victoria Holt) follows one British family from the days of Henry VIII all the way to the Great War. Each book captures another generation of intrigue, family drama and romance.
If you enjoy historical fiction and you haven’t read these books, you really must. They’re amazing and captivating. . .with strong and well-drawn characters and fascinating story lines.
Matter of fact, now that it’s beach weather again. . .I think I’ll re-read them this summer!
Care to join me?
PS I will be adding a book to the beach read population this summer! Stay tuned here for information on THE POSSE, coming in June!

NO BRAINER Release Day Promo!

Genre: Young Adult, Mystery
Two weeks before junior year, Darcy hops a plane to Orlando for a little R&R with her best friend Dylan and his family. Fresh off the heels of solving three murders in Valley, you’d think she’d sit back and enjoy the vacation capital of the world…maybe if you’re a noun. Darcy Walker, however, is nothing but verb.
Before her feet hit the Orlando soil, she’s meddling in the disappearance of a five-year-old boy who vanished six months earlier.
With authorities still no closer to solving the case, Darcy is shanghaied by her impulsivity and runs headlong into that proverbial burning building, convinced she can bring him home.
She travels down a road that not only follows this missing child but branches off into the corrupt and sinister world of mob activity when she tampers in a case on which Dylan’s detective grandfather is working.
After a near disastrous midnight meeting in a warehouse and a date with a mechanical bull, Darcy realizes she might’ve bitten off more than she can chew. Add the boiling flirtationship with her best friend and the appearance of his romantic rival, and she is in over her head.
Will she survive a life of flirting with death too easily? Or will her flirtationship with Dylan become the actual death of her instead?

About Author AJ Lape

A. J. lives in Cincinnati with her husband, two feministic daughters, an ADD dog, a spoiled hamster, and an unapologetic and unrepentant addiction to Coca-Cola. She studied English, Journalism, and Political Science at Morehead State University and left the business world when her daughters were born. Her love for suspense and a good story was spawned from watching Mystery Science Theater with her sister during childhood. That and any B movie with comedic undertones they could get their hands on.
When she’s not riding that razor-thin line between creativity and insanity, she likes to read, watch too much cable TV, or cheer like a banshee at her daughters’ sporting events. She’s a huge hometown sports fan and loves to watch the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds whenever she can.

LITERARY ADDICTS Weekly Wednesday Meme: Most Influential Non-Fic Book
What is the most influential non-fiction book in my life?
This is a tough one, because I’m kind of a non-fic junkie, or I used to be. Now I fit in my addiction when I can. When I was a teenager, I consumed every self-help book I could find: make up, hair, skin care. . .you name it. And I also developed an intense love for biographies. I think the first one I read was MAJESTY by Robert Lacey, a biography of Elizabeth II.
But I think there were four books which were and continue to be a huge part of my life.
The first is Beyond Ourselves by Catherine Marshall. That book deeply informed my spiritual development; I led a study on it recently and found that it still holds transformative power over my life.
The second is The Master’s Way to Beauty by George Masters. I know; from a spiritual book to a beauty guide? Yup, that’s me. This book taught me tricks that I still use today and got me through some tough middle school years. As a matter of fact, I’m planning a book for next year that is loosely based on my experience with that book, about a girl about to go into high school.
The third is D.V., the beautiful, evocative and perhaps not quite factual autobiography of socialite, magazine editor and museum curate Diana Vreeland. Her life spanned the century and several continents; she knew the most fascinating people, and I was intrigued. I re-read it a few years ago and was just as captivated. You cannot really understand the twentieth century without reading this book.
And last. . .part autobiography, part self-help: Having It All by Helen Gurley Brown. I read this book in high school, and it gave me my feminist roots. I can still quote whole sections of this book. HGB taught me tricks and tips I use to this day. . .
Now that I think about it, I’m about due another non-fic fix. Time to go troll the library shelves. . .
Be sure to hop around the meme and see what non-fic books influenced other lives!
A Writer in the World: At the DMV
A few weeks ago, I found myself in the DMV, or whatever its name is in the state of Florida. For the third time in my life, I was waiting while one of my daughters took her road test in order to earn her license.
As I sat there, it occurred to me that this is one of the most tense, anxiety-provoking situations that a parent experiences. Because, you see, there is nothing you can do. Your job is done. You cannot take the test for your child; you cannot even be in the car to provide moral support or words of assurance. You have to sit back, hope you’ve done your best to prepare her and try to keep the nerves from getting the best of you.
As a writer, I experience something similar every time a book is released. I’ve written the best story I can. I’ve revised, edited, revised again. I’ve had it formatted, chosen the best cover I possibly could. And then I release it out into the world.
I can’t go with it. I can’t be there every time someone buys my book to explain why I made the choices I did, why a character says what she does. I have to let it go and trust that I’ve done my best.
That day in the DMV, my daughter dashed back into the waiting room wearing a triumphant smile: she had passed. The hard work had paid off, and it was time to celebrate.
Since I’m gearing up to release a new book, I know I’ll be back in my virtual waiting room again soon. I hope the results are just as awesome.
