Writing - The unexpected
Having completed my 10th Steele novel I decided to take some remedial action. If you have written much you will have undoubtedly come across that like every repeated activity you improve. I had a look at my first Steele novel, 'I Have To Get It Right' and frankly was appalled. It was naive and riddled with errors so I decided to do something about it.

My first step was to commit the book to Amazon Prime and then to start re-formatting, correcting and re-writing. It is a slow process but the outcome will be something that I'm happier with rather than the current turkey that it is. There are all kinds of excuses I could make but in fact writing the book was a positive step in that it got me started on the journey.
In fact the book in its raw state is FREE on Amazon until Monday.
The next step is to continue the re-write then change the title. It will be 'Steele Begins' published on Createspace (Amazon). I will market it under Prime. Watch this space.
At the current time there is the presidential election in the USA and if you consider the electoral system there is undoubted connection back to the events of 9/11. There is the involvement of the security agencies, unexplained and precipitate actions by the US Government and a failure of security agencies to communicate knowledge with each other. Many of the same people are probably still in post 15 years later. So read 7 Hours After and allow your mind to wander freely and decide what is fact and what is fiction.

Writing - Keep the customers satisfied
When I write it is to satisfy a need within me and with little regard to a clientele or customer base. In other words a luxury. Not all have that facility and tend to need to tailor their writing accordingly.

Writing - A new outlet
The really big sticking point if you are trying to make money from writing is the sales and marketing aspect. On a personal level my least favourite task. One thing that definitely helps is word of mouth. In fact that has been going quite well this time with 7 Hours After

I have new friends that run the newsagents in the centre of town from which my hero, Patrick Steele, bases his actions. This was just a casual conversation and the owner offered to display my books. A great opportunity from a chance meeting.
Obviously there are the usual channels through which works can be advertised - social media, local news, and so on, but I felt that such opportunities as the above could be golden.

Sensational, outstanding, breathtaking, morebut never just good, it’s not enough.Brilliant, stupendous, magnificent or,good just not enough.
Over doing stuff is de rigueur,no room for mediocre or average.Exceptional performance, immense vigour,but being good – all you can manage?
It has to stop, there is dangerin overblown, extravagant adjectives.There’s only so far to adventurein the realm of verbiage descriptive.© David L Atkinson November 2016

Writing - Human frailty and stories
Films are one of my hobbies which is a bit of a cop out because all they really are stories on celluloid! I love stories. The basis for stories can literally be anything but quite often they stem from some frailty in a human.
The Accountant
I have just been to view The Accountant starring Ben Affleck who plays the part of a mathematical savant come hitman/enforcer. It was an interesting mix and though not great, certainly entertaining.
Affleck's character had elements of my Patrick Steele. Steele is a man with compulsions bordering on the obsessive which underpins all of his adventures to a greater or lesser extent. Choosing the human frailty to write a story around isn't new but there are so many to choose from.
How about,a shoplifting detective?
an asthmatic cat burglar?
a wheelchair bound lawyer!!! (been done)
a private eye with one leg!!! (been done)
in fact there have been many versions but you have to select something with which you have some experience to elicit the best results.

Tuesday Food Blog - Katsu beef curry
In the constant round of trying to find something different to eat I have tried cuisines from many parts of the world via the supermarket!!!! This week I'm back to Japan for something slightly different, very tasty and very simple.
Katsu Beef Curry
Katsu is usually a cutlet of chicken covered in breadcrumbs and served with a curry sauce and rice. My version has stewing beef and vegetables. I cheated using a prepacked katsu curry block but then added my own ingredients.
Ingredients
100g Yutaka curry tray1 large onion, chopped800ml boiling watersalt and pepperstewing beef, cubedcarrots, dicedturnip, cubed
Method
Fry off the onion in a little oil with salt and pepper. When the onions have begun to clarify add the boiling water, bring back to the boil, add the tray of katsu curry and stir until it is all broken up. Simmer. In a separate pan brown the meat then add it to the simmering sauce along with the prepared vegetables. Simmer for a couple of hours and serve with rice.
In the case of using the curry sauce as intended, you cook the breaded chicken cutlet, prepare the sauce as above and serve on the side as a sauce rather than as a base for a curry dish. I found that the dish works very well as I prepared it and is very tasty. It is different to Indian curry but is very satisfying if you like curry.

Katsu Beef Curry

So which candidate is in power? Well it doesn't really matter in the context of this new book but in a sense the political aspects of this story point towards the nature of US politics.

Writing - Leonard Cohen a legend
I first came across Leonard Cohen in 1968 at a folk club where one of the acts covered Suzanne. I was so taken by the haunting nature of his words and the imagery that I went out and bought the album that included that track.

His work explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality, and personal relationships. Cohen was inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour. In 2011, Cohen received one of the Prince of Asturias Awards for literature and the ninth Glenn Gould Prize.
The Academy of American Poets has commented more broadly on Cohen's overall career in the arts, including his work as a poet, novelist, and songwriter, stating that "Cohen's successful blending of poetry, fiction, and music is made most clear in Stranger Music: Selected Poems and Songs, published in 1993, which gathered more than 200 of Cohen's poems … several novel excerpts, and almost 60 song lyrics... while it may seem to some that Leonard Cohen departed from the literary in pursuit of the musical, his fans continue to embrace him as a Renaissance man who straddles the elusive artistic borderlines.
So Cohen was prolific in a number of literary fields. He wasn't everyone's cup of tea and I have had people say to me that what he produced was weird but in fact his words need to be studied. I am not personally familiar with his novels or poetry so I decided to do some research.

like a forest-burning Mongol tribe,
the city is ravished
and brittle buildings of a hundred years
splash into the street;
and my eyes are burnt
for the embroidered Chinese girls,
already old,
and so small between the thin pines
on these enormous landscapes,
that if you turn your head
they are lost for hours.
I chose this poem because of the way he used imagery and simile to achieve the view he needed to convey to his readers. Many of his songs are similar in their obscure nature. My favourite still is Suzanne although Sisters of Mercy saw me through the dying of my mother.
