Writing - Be patient
Turn your mind back to when you were so excited about the advent of Christmas you were constantly being reminded to be patient.
I can remember clearly being asked repeatedly to 'possess my soul in patience'. Irrespective of the words it is easy to recall that pent up, stomach clenching feeling of anticipation. Marvellous!Well there were stirring memories this afternoon as I put my little electric tree up and resurrected the nativity scene that I believe should be a must in every household.
I think a simple scene as above calms the 'greediness' that the season can descend into if we are not careful.
Similarly, when I completed the eleventh novel and set it free on an unsuspecting public, there was a sense of anticipation spurred on by positive comments from friends and family. I am being patient.
At the current time there is the presidential election in the USA and if you consider the electoral system there is undoubted connection back to the events of 9/11. There is the involvement of the security agencies, unexplained and precipitate actions by the US Government and a failure of security agencies to communicate knowledge with each other. Many of the same people are probably still in post 15 years later. So read 7 Hours After and allow your mind to wander freely and decide what is fact and what is fiction.

Writing - Happy birthday Kirk Douglas
It would be remiss of me to pass up the opportunity to wish Kirk Douglas a happy 100th birthday. Truly amazing and he looks quite well and strong.

A remarkable career and the head of a significant acting dynasty that have retold stories on screen for many years. It isn't that hard to imagine why acting dynasties occur in that it is just like people staying in the family business. It seems to occur less frequently in the families of authors.
There are notable exceptions - the Brontes - but writing doesn't seem to be an art form with a whole bunch of transferable skills. It rather supports my belief that there is an incredible depth of ones personality in the written word.
At the current time there is the presidential election in the USA and if you consider the electoral system there is undoubted connection back to the events of 9/11. There is the involvement of the security agencies, unexplained and precipitate actions by the US Government and a failure of security agencies to communicate knowledge with each other. Writing - Your most dramatic year.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described 1992 as her annus horibilis as there had been so many unhappy family incidents.

Well it would be more interesting for us to perhaps consider which year was our most dramatic. You know the sort of thing, a year where all of your New Year's resolutions came true - you lost weight, made money and married an heiress!Obviously the longer you have lived the harder that may turn out to be.
This could be a writing exercise producing a short article. It will probably involve a modicum of research and information of a more general nature about that year. In the interest of time I shall select the year my first child was born - 1979
JanuaryCoincidentally, it was the international year of the child.The winter of this year was described as the 'winter of discontent' which included numerous strikes. A slightly obtuse view of three Christmas traditions.

Angels
White, diaphanous and the epitome of good,representing the best of heaven and earth.Is there another nature to choose if they could,that may besmirch their perceived worth?
With halos, wings and glowing all round goodness,reputations saintly and acts divine,would it refresh to see a little humanness,signs of fallibility from time to time?
But then we would have to change their title,to something less complimentary,we would miss their interventions vital,in the daily running of our society.© David L Atkinson December 2016

Demons
Teachers may have a different view,on the frequency of demons.Having taught quite a few,I can understand their reasons.
The depths to which the young may sink,would surprise their parents at home,they’ve learned to take actions to the brink,of all accepted norms.
But then most change allowing goodness to shine,astounding those who care,particularly around the Christmas time,when all demons need to share.© David L Atkinson December 2016
Elves
Small in stature but with diligence,they strive every day to complete many tasks,of great variety and requiring intelligence,for the benefit of those who ask.
Going about their work pointed ears twitching,applying skills as needed to all situations,they feverishly produce their makings,fulfilling the Christmas anticipation.
When it’s over no one notices,it gives the Elves time to rest.Do they spend time sharpening practices,so that next year will be their best?© David L Atkinson December 2016

Writing - Presents are ready
I would hope that He has the majority of the presents made and is beginning to stow them on the warehouse floor ready for picking up and delivery.

The sleigh is big but He still has to make return trips from various parts of the planet. Its a good job that He is an expert time fiddler.

Tuesday Food Blog - Phil Vickery's really easy mince hotpot with mushrooms
Phil Vickery was an international rugby player who turned his hand to cooking.

However, Phil didn't just 'turn his hand' he made a new career out of being a chef beginning with winning 2011 Celebrity Masterchef. Since then he has produced a couple of cookbooks. Today's recipe is not from one of his own books but from Mitzie Wilson's Mince. I was looking for something quick and tasty using minced beef because it was on offer at Lidl. So here we go.
Mince hotpot with mushrooms
Ingredients
4 tbsp vegetable oil (olive oil)1 large onion, chopped2 cloves garlic, chopped200g mushrooms, sliced500g minced beef1 tbsp plain flour400g canned chopped tomatoesbasil1 tbsp gravy granules3 tbsp brown sauce5 large potatoes, dicedsalt and black peppervegetable oil.
Method
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C/180 fan/ gas mark 6
Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a pan, add the chopped onion, mushrooms and garlic. Cook over a high heat taking care not to burn the garlic.
Add the mince an break it up and cook until it all changes from pink to brown. Stir in the flour, tomatoes, basil, beef granules and brown sauce and mix really well.
Toss the chopped potato in the remaining oil and salt and black pepper. Spoon the meat mixture into an ovenproof casserole and throw the potatoes on top. Cover and cook for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and cook for a further 20 minutes to brown the topping.
Enjoy
I was concerned that the potatoes wouldn't cook but my fears were unfounded. One variation was to replace two of the potatoes with a sweet potato.

Having read numerous articles on selling seeding various places is an interesting activity.

The glamorous Emma Watson has been leaving books around the subway in New York and the London Underground. It is a way of directing people's attention if they are interested enough to pick up one of the books.Other places to consider are cafes and libraries. The problem is that the cost of all these books comes out of your own pocket! Need I say more?
There are alternative avenues such as local newspapers and organisations with book clubs. In fact there are no rules and you can be as creative as you wish but whichever - good luck.

Writing - Progress in sales
The realm of sales and marketing hold little or no interest for me and I have put little effort in this area up until this last book. Then by a process of serendipitous occurrences sales are beginning to grow. Obviously I'm pleased but it hasn't been that difficult.

Almost as if a sales angel has been pushing me along, in the right direction.
It began when my daughter said that she felt this book was going to be different from the others.Then a friend who owns a shop in town volunteered to advertise my books in his emporium.Finally, I raised my own profile with Amazon by entering my first Steele novel into their Prime scheme.
Three innocuous actions but of all 11 books this one seems to be doing the best. I suppose it is because I have raised my profile but watch this space.
