Poetry Thursday 240 - Troubled mind and bodies

It was difficult considering what today's title would be and it could change yet. Perhaps that is an indication of a 'mixed bag'.

All in the mind
It’s safer to look awaythan see what’s in their eyes.Better not to attendthan be seen at parties.Don’t join in, keep away from crowds.Safer than exposing inner prizes.
Don’t fall in love, though it’s difficult to avoid. It won’t last anyway. You keep trying cos’ you’re humanoid, but it’s chipping away at your self.Should have had a health warningor pre-pubescent training.
Stick to your routine, no room for change, there’s safety following the railway tracks.A place for everything and everything in its place. Some laugh at the obsessive compulsives, but there is balm in repetition, and security in safe havens.© David L Atkinson November 2016

The above came from two films I've seen recently, one which featured an autistic central character and the second whose central character played his part in an autistic manner.

Virus
Monday came as Monday doesto find poor David with runny nose, hacking cough and explosives sneezing,to accompany streaming eyes and muscles aching.
What’s the matter? You may ask.No great test as a medical task, just a virus, small and old, that brings about the common cold. © David L Atkinson November 2016

Just feeling sorry for myself!
The next can be sung to the traditional tune. (Tannenbaum)

O Christmas Tree
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, how ubiquitous are your leaves.O Christmas tree, pesky Christmas tree, how widespread no one believes. Not just in month of January, but through to summer’s prime.O Christmas tree, benighted Christmas tree, they’re vacced up all the time.
O Christmas tree, bloody Christmas tree, what pleasure did you bring us.O Christmas tree, damned Christmas tree, the clean up falls on one of us.For every year that blasted tree, brings to you all both joy and glee, but Christmas tree, ruddy Christmas tree, much endeavour do you bring me.
O Christmas tree, messy Christmas tree, your odour pervades the whole house,O Christmas tree, pungent Christmas tree, your smell is making a seasonal grouse. Each painful minute in my home, your presence drives in thoughts of Rome.O Christmas tree, blasted Christmas tree,I’ll be glad to see the back of thee.   © David L Atkinson November 2016

Just a bit of fun before we all become drawn in by the magic.

Writing - Nature of the arts

If you want to upset your parents, and you don't have the nerve to be gay, the least you can do is go into the arts.I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life bearable. Practising an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake.

[image error]K Vonnegut

Sing in the shower.Dance to the radio.Tell stories.Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will have created something.
So states author Kurt Vonnegut and what a superbly accurate and encouraging quote it is. The one thing that I would add is that once you have accepted the temptation of one of the arts, you find yourself 'trying out' the others. The concept of failure then becomes irrelevant as you can't be great at everything. Hence I produce, water colours, pencil sketches, poetry and books, sometimes badly, sometimes with a degree of satisfaction and success.
The message begins with the assertion that it is not going to pay you a fortune but it will benefit your soul.

At the current time there is the presidential election in the USA and if you consider the electoral system there is undoubted connection back to the events of 9/11. There is the involvement of the security agencies, unexplained and precipitate actions by the US Government and a failure of security agencies to communicate knowledge with each other. Many of the same people are probably still in post 15 years later. So read 7 Hours After and allow your mind to wander freely and decide what is fact and what is fiction.

Synopsis
Patrick Steele is off crusading once again with his sidekick, fiancée Naomi Kobayashi. This time he is risking life and limb by returning to the hostile shores of the USA. He has had brushes with the authorities in that vast country on previous occasions, but now has been stimulated to return because of apparent dodgy dealings over the World Trade Centre disaster of September 11th 2001.After discovering numerous ‘theories’ concerning 9/11 and who was behind it, Steele identifies possible links between large corporations with financial interests and political parties. In a presidential election year he is concerned that those vying for that prodigious post may have links with the disaster.Has Steele discovered underhand dealing by the US security services? Did one of the major political parties have a hand in the destruction of 9/11?Will Steele be caught by the CIA or can he escape back to the safety of the UK?

Writing - 27 days to go

Three weeks and six days to the visit of the big man. As a primary school teacher there was a sotto voce disagreement between the older children and the young ones about the existence of Santa Claus. When I asked I used to respond with a typical adult response - did you get presents at Christmas? No one took me up on that because even the oldest ones (aged 11) did not want to upset the little ones and hide their own level of belief from classmates.

Its in the bag. He will come on 25th as always but how did we end up with the name?
Santa Claus, the name, was derived from Dutch St Nicholas, or Sinterklass. Early Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam (New York) brought their traditions of St Nicholas. As children from other countries tried to pronounce Sinterklass, this developed into Sinter Klass and finally what we have today.
The old bishop's cloak, mitre, jewelled gloves and crozier were eventually replaced with his red suit and the mode of dress we see today.

Books make great presents and below are the full collection created over the last seven years.

Writing - Author or writer?

I always struggle with titles and attributions but people do ask what you do. The question in my mind is am I a writer or and author?
Author
Image result for what is an author
I put the question to Google images and the above was one of the results. The dictionary definition I found states that an author is someone who initiates something; or writes books and stories.
Well I certainly do initiate in that I have created from scratch Patrick Steele and his 10 stories, but I also create poetry.
Writer
[image error]

A writer is someone who writes something or writes in a particular way. It can also be someone who writes and then stores the writing on a device.
So an author can be a writer also, but I think I can fairly describe myself as an author. However, there are a plethora of qualifying adjectives that may be attached to the title.
And so, the most recent creation.

Writing - Reviews and pricing warning.

I have had a bit of a surprise this morning. In exploring my books on Amazon I first of all discovered some great reviews but also some rather surprising book pricing!

Amazon.com: 5.0 out of 5 stars 1 review 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful First Collection! 22 Aug. 2012 By Jo King Vonbargen - Published on Amazon.comFormat: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Author Atkinson has given us a lovely and thought-provoking body of work in his first collection of poetry! His haiku and tanka pieces range from the steadfastness of church and faith to the biting and witty sarcasm of politics, all wonderfully rendered and clear as a bell. His sonnets reveal the many layers of man and his struggles with issues most of us deal with today. One can feel his joy and misery equally, as he lays bare the heart and soul of his mind's wanderings in search of doing the right thing and righting obvious societal wrongs. My sincere hope is that he will continue with his search for truth via poetry, as one can go places and find things unreachable by any other avenue. It is wonderful to read this initial offering from a wonderful novelist who has dipped a toe in the poetry sea and found a home there. It will be a joy to follow his growth in this new undertaking!

--Jo VonBargen 2012
An excellent review but only one of very few. I'd love more people to take five minutes out to add reviews on Amazon.

Speaking of Amazon. I searched my name under their 'books' department and came across several pages of books that had nothing to do with me interspersed with my portfolio. Many of them having no relevance to my name at all. However, I did find some fascinating pricing on different pages for the same books.

Poetry Thursday 239 - Magic of Christmas

It will be Advent Sunday next weekend and before you know it he will have been and gone. So last night I began to ponder the magic of the season and these two pieces popped out.

What Magic
Not the abracadabra sort,or waving a stick of wood,no making coins appear from naught.Oh, if we only could. No rabbits conjured from battered titfer,or an endless chain of kerchiefs,no sawing a young lady asunder,or exacting audience cash tariffs. This type comes from within, linked to the seasonal reason,it helps to motivate children,to good behaviour preseason. The fact is that the magic works, for a significant part of the year, the kindness and good behaviour irks, but no one dares test its cheer.© David L Atkinson November 2016

The word 'titfer' is from the rhyming slang 'titfer tat = hat'.
The trouble is that the choice of 'Magic' as a subject threw up so many choices.

Advent
They had been called to go back, not the most convenient of times. She, huge with child and energy did lack,a donkey the only way to ease the climes.
It would take days on the rutted tracks,to achieve the town he called home,so that masters could calculate their tax,and send it back to Rome.
An arid time with little comfort, the chance of robber bands.A tiring journey but he stayed alert,to the dangers of these lands.
Eventually they arrived at the bustling town, relieved at the thought of some rest, but at every door received with a frownwhen they made their desperate request.
In downcast state they took what’s available,at an inn, annexe with a mucky floor, nothing other than a lowly stable, for beasts of the fields with beds of straw.
The baby was born in that poor place, surrounded by people and animals, the significant member of the human race, meant to set our guiding principles.
No palace, servants, nurse or doctor,to secure a Royal baby’s birthing,a lack of comfort and no succour,in the process of delivering the King. © David L Atkinson November 2016

Writing - How do you recognise genius

To a degree there is only a rather pessimistic answer to the above question. What I mean by that is quite often true genius isn't recognised until the purveyor of the genius is dead. Well I think we have another genius on this planet and I know that it is a subjective judgement, but I am quite convinced.

[image error]J K Rowling
To some I will be preaching to the converted, to others I'll have lost my mind. If I was making the judgement solely on the Potter books then I would agree but I'm not.
On one hand you have to accept that the Potter books were a revelation across the planet, on the other there were weaknesses, but that is true for everyone. However, I have also read the Cormoran Strike books by Robert Galbraith (Rowling again) and again they are readable and have a unique central character and kept me entertained. So across two genre J K Rowling has achieved a level of success.
Finally, there is the latest screen play and movie Fantastic Beasts and where to find them. I have just returned from seeing the film and it was excellent. In all honesty I thought the story line may be a little weak but I was wrong - it was good. Obviously, the special effects people deserve great credit but the idea was hers.
I haven't included the other spin offs she has created from the Potter family of stories but that just adds to her CV. This is a lady of real talent and imagination and deserves all the plaudits thrown her way.
My efforts pale into insignificance but I keep trying.

Tuesday Food Blog - Katsu Curry 2

Thought I would revisit the Katsu curry that I tried last week but sticking a little more closely to tradition.

Katsu Curry
So this is my version of the meal that appears on the packet! Well almost! The curry is usually served as a sauce rather than what we understand as a curry. I added peas and some cubed potato. If you enjoy a spicy meal that isn't fiery then try a Japanese style curry.
As always there are alternatives.
Curry with mashed potato
The basic sauce has shown to be very versatile and would do well with noodles and vegetables as well as with meat.
