Has Dystopia Become a Comfortable Cliche’?

On my short list of authors that I must read, if for no other reason than it is writing at its finest, is Barbara Kingsolver. Her novels are the kind that has me set the book down on occasion to catch my breath and sigh. Her newest offering, Flight Behavior, surprised me with a subtle apocalyptic theme, based on a potential calamity from environmental change. A twofer, my favorite author and my favorite genre.
In a recent book review of Flight Behavio...

The Muse hosts guest author Charlene Wilson
Today we’ve invited Charlene Wilson to to pull up a chair and visit with the Musers.Charlene is an author of paranormal tales that take you away to other dimensions. She weaves magic, lasting love, and intrigue to immerse you into the lives of her characters. She began writing in her early teens when her vivid dreams stayed with her long after she had them. The Notebook Meets the Friends-Turn-Lovers Novel
My guest today is R.T. Wolfe, the author of the Black Creek Series set in beautiful upstate New York. RT enjoys creating diverse characters and twining them together in the midst of an intelligent mystery and a heart encompassing romance.
She loves dark chocolate squares and its not uncommon to find her Golden Retriever at her feet and a few caterpillars spinning their cocoons in their terrariums on her counters. R.T. loves her family, gardening, eagle-watching and can occasionally be found vi...
What is Love?
On our first date, UHH (DH’s new achronym) and I danced to a jukebox in an empty lounge, in late afternoon when it was too early for a band. Seems he couldn’twait to dance with me
and it was to a song he’d heard me practicing to perform later, “Could I Have this Dance”. When the song ended he stopped moving, looked down at me and said, “Woman, I just about love you!”The chorus to this Anne Murray song goes…”Would you be my partner, every night. When we’re together, it feels so right. Could I...

Tuesday at the Theater
This is the second installment of my mini-reviews of this year’s Oscar-nominated movies.
Today, I’m reviewing Beasts of the Southern Wild. Yeah, I hadn’t heard of it either.
Starring: Quvenzhane Wallis (up for Best Actress), Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly
Here’s the official blurb: In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, s...

Letting Go
Good, bad, or indifferent, I’m a nurturer. Even though my children are all grown and on their own I suppose I will always be involved in their lives, by their design as much as from my desire. Our son is inMassachusetts and is only 3 hours (the way he drives) away. Recently he had a great opportunity with his company. The job was on the west coast. It was a great step forward for him and I wholeheartedly supported him. Like his older sisters, he is ready to strike out on his own. Perhaps it’s...

Paper Art – Oh wow!
Hi everyone,
Like most of us, I spend too many hours on the Internet. May of those hours are legitimate research hours for my writing. The others…not so much. But every time I venture out into the vast unknown, I do find nuggets of sheer genius to bring back to bookmark. The ones I’m going to show you are art pieces and their creators. I’m an artist. Not just a writer, but also a painter – when I have time. And you’re right…who’s got time, anymore!
But these artists have found a niche, a way to...

Southernisms
I was born in the Midwest where winters are sub-zero, the summers are hot, and every potluck has at least one jello-mold. I always considered everyone I knew friendly–until I came to the south.
South of the Mason Dixon line things were different here. The home of sweet-tea, corn-bread and sweet-potato casserole. Here, I found when I was out walking or driving, I’d get a wave, a nod, or a “Hey.” I’d look around and wondered did I know them? For a long time I’d stare suspiciously at those who di...
Tuesday at the Theater: Oscar nom review
Every year, my husband and I try to see all the Oscar-nominated movies. Sometimes, like this year, we procrastinate, and have to cram all the movies into two-three weeks. I thought it would be fun to do mini-reviews of these movies for the next few Tuesdays leading up to the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 24.
Today’s mini review is for Zero Dark Thirty. Here’s the Wikipedia blurb and the trailer.
“Zero Dark Thirty is a 2012 American historical drama film directed by Kathryn...

Sealed With A Curse by Alexa Egan
Curse: a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one.
In DEMON’S CURSE, my debut release, an evil spell is cast over four shapechangers in retaliation for a savage massacre. They’re forced to live the hours of darkness as their animal aspects with no hope of ever lifting the curse. That is…until one of them is murdered and the first clue surfaces that their just might be a way to break the spell. But before they can discover it, they have to survive the killer hot on their trail.
