10 Classics You Read in High School That You Should Read ~ Again

I was perusing the blogs I read and came across this article in Publisher’s Weekly. Kevin Smokler’s book,Practical Classics: 50 Reasons to Reread 50 Books You Haven’t Touched Since High School, reflects on high school English Lit classes and the books we were forced assigned to read. In the Publisher’s Weekly article he lists his top 10 required readings and the things he missed the first time. I’ve tried to synthesize his comments about these great books and at times resorted to quoting him:...

Guest Author ~ Shawna Thomas

Shawna Thomas

Today’s post is an interview with Carina Press author Shawna Thomas. Her new book,Journey of Awakening, was released this past Monday. It’s an epic fantasy, my kind of story.

Here is a short description of Shawna’sJourney to Awakening.

Trained from birth for one purpose, Sara must reunite three ancient stones to restore balance to the land but one of the stone keepers has other plans.

To get to know Shawna better, she has answered a few questions.

1.How long did it take you to writeJ...

Celebrations

Celebrations are wonderful. We celebrate first steps, first tooth, first words, and first birthdays. It doesn’t seem that long ago when I was teaching Cori how to ride her bike or pick out notes on the piano. We had a great time at the roller rink-she ‘rollered’ and I watched. There were other firsts; date, prom, job. We celebrated them all.

Today is another celebration. Four months ago Cori and Chris got married. It wasn’t a world wind courtship. It was twelve years in the making. But their c...

Titanic II

The RMS Titanic was the world’s largest and most luxurious ocean liner when it collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank on April 15, 1912. Of the 2,224 people on board, 1,502 souls perished in the most famous maritime disaster in history, partly because of a shortage of lifeboats. The tragedy of the ship’s maiden voyage was immortalized in the very successful 1997 film by James Cameron.

Yesterday, Australian billionaire Clive Palmer unveiled blueprints for construction of Titani...

Tuesdays at the Theater

This is the last installment of my mini reviews of the Oscar-nominated movies. Because we crammed four movies into the last week, you’ll get four extra-mini reviews.

But first, my impressions of last night’s Academy Awards, my predictions (well, who I wanted to win) and who actually won.

I was really looking forward to Seth McFarland as host. Normally, he’s cutting-edge funny, not TOO tasteless, and super talented. Last night, he was…boring. Sorry, Seth, but you were. I don’t know if the Oscar...

5 Tips for Getting Your Project Back on Target

I’ve been spending a lot of time over the past couple of weeks trying to coax my muse into cooperating with what I thought was my next project. I’ve got about 9,000 words on paper, but she’s gone on vacation.

Okay, so at least I’ve got 9,000 words that I can fix. (And believe me, I’m going to have to “fix” at least half of them.) But when my muse takes off like this, it normally means the project wasn’t as good as I initially thought so it’s time to regroup.

How do I regroup? The five “tricks o...

Me and Lady Jane

Three years ago I had just written my first book, Knight of Runes, and met NY Times Best Selling author Leanna Renee Hieber at the New York City RWA chapter meeting. Feeling a bit like a fish out of water, over the next few months Leanna encouraged me and kept my spirits upmidstrejections and rewrites. She also told me about Lady Jane’s. It sounded like one of the great European salons where people sat and talked about the arts with artists and writers. I thought the idea of a salon dedicated...

Romance writing is hazardous to my romance

Guys have it tough in romance novels. In any romance worth its happily-ever-after, the hero, however alpha, has to know his way around a florist’s shop, read minds and emotions, and even if he doesn’t have to clean or do dishes, he’s responsible for giving his girl the best lovin’ she’s ever had.

In real life, however, it’s sometimes just the opposite. Women more often than not, lament a lack of consistent romance in their lives. Their guys can’t read minds, and most pick up their flowers from...

Tuesdays at the Theater

Two more mini review of Oscar movies

This week, I’m reviewing two movies (now, we’re in panic mode, trying to cram the rest of the Oscar-nominated movies into the last week. The Academy Awards are on Sunday. Yikes!!!).

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver

This movie is billed as a romantic comedy. But I wouldn’t call it that. I would call it a drama with romantic and comedic elements.

Here is the blurb from Oscar.Go.com: Pat Solatano i...
