Erotic Romance in the Mainstream – Hey Mom, Guess What I Wrote?
Erotic Romance in the Mainstream – Hey Mom, Guess What I Wrote? Most aspiring writers believe that once they get the good news that they’re going to be published, they’ll want to run up and down the streets telling everyone they see. They may even sing their own praises from the rooftops. I never really gave it much thought. Then it became apparent that I wasn’t going to be one of those people. Why? I write erotic romance. I’m not ashamed of anything I’ve written. I just understand that like it or not, there’s still a certain stigma attached to the genre. I don’t treat it like a scandalous secret, but at the same time, I don’t bombard everyone on my Facebook friends list with “HEY I WROTE THIS SMUTTY BOOK YOU SHOULD READ IT!” However, that begs the question – why not? Why shouldn’t I want to share my accomplishments with everyone I know and let them be proud of me? When discussing erotic romance as part of mainstream literature, the comparisons to 50 Shades of That are going to be inevitable. Yeah, those books. You know the ones. I haven’t read them, so I don’t feel qualified to pass judgment on them one way or the other. However, it’s impossible to ignore their effect on the general public’s opinion on erotica. That’s something that affects me as a writer. My mother and I have always had a pretty good relationship, but sex was something that was not to be discussed. I don’t think I even told her some of my friends were gay until I got to college, because being gay involves sex, you know. One of my aunts finally got her to admit that maybe, just maybe, I knew what sex was a month after I returned from my honeymoon. So imagine my surprise when, at Palm Sunday dinner with the family, we’re talking about books, and she quietly confesses to me that she read 50 Shades. And not just read them, mind you. According to her, she “couldn’t put them down!” I was rather dumbstruck, and gave her a look one might expect to come from someone whose mother has just told her about how she enjoyed reading a book about kinky sex (and which of her similarly-aged friends recommended it to her or read it after her). The shock wore off, and I realized I had an opening to discuss my writing. Before I could muster up the nerve, another aunt interrupted to loudly announce that more toilet paper was needed in the bathroom. That’s my family for you. A couple days passed, and I kept trying to find a way to bring it up again and confess what I had done. We went to the movies later in the week, and decided to grab some dinner afterwards. When we were a cocktail or two in (because that’s how Mom and I roll), I broached the subject again. “I still can’t believe you blazed right through 50 Shades,” I said. I don’t remember what sort of sheepish answer she gave. It was then or never, I decided. “What would you say if I told you I’ve been writing similar books, that I had one published a couple months ago, and I have another one coming out soon?” Her reaction was much like mine on Palm Sunday. “What?” “…Yeah.” She processed this information for a few moments before speaking again. “Wow, that’s great! I can’t wait to tell all my friends! Are you on Amazon?” I don’t know if that was the reaction I was expecting. Actually, I really don’t know what sort of reaction I was expecting. Either way, I’m glad I came clean. I told her that should she read them, we would not be discussing them, and so far, that’s been the case. She’ll occasionally ask me if I’m working on a book, and she’ll notice when I have a new one out. That’s good enough for me. (Truth be told, I think she’s read them – if for no other reason than to satisfy her curiosity – but despite how far we’ve come, I don’t think we need to exchange thoughts on spanking and threesomes. Or spanking in threesomes.) I’m glad the current literary climate is such that conversations about erotica are held so openly. There is still something to be said for knowing your audience, and I’m not about to march into a church on Sunday morning to peddle my naughty wares. I do have a high school reunion coming up soon, though, and you can be damn sure I’ll be talking about my work with that crowd. I like what I do. I also like that we’re rapidly approaching the point where even those who choose not to read erotica will acknowledge and accept it as a valid genre, and will not roll their eyes and snicker at those who enjoy it. Writing about sex is a skill just like any other, and why should certain authors feel they should hide their talents?
Big thanks to Carrie Ann for letting me ramble on here! Don’t forget to enter to win an e-copy of my erotic fantasy, The Edge of the Sphere!

An Excerpt from ENFORCER'S REDEMPTION

Excerpt:
She murmured a good night, and he walked out, leaving her with her passed-out mate and the sudden urge to take care of him.“He needs us,” her wolf whimpered.“Shush, you,” she whispered back. “He’s a grown man who doesn’t need us staring at him like a freaking stalker while he’s sleeping.”Adam groaned from the bed and tried to take his shirt off, struggling in his current state. She caught a glimpse of tanned flesh and wanted to groan right with him. Damn, she was pregnant and ready to pop. She shouldn’t be thinking dirty thoughts.Especially not with the man currently trying to strip out of his clothes. With a sigh, she waddled over to him and placed a hand on his arm, the heat radiating from him shocking her. She’d forgotten how hot his skin was.“Adam, stop trying to take off your clothes. You’re going to hurt yourself.” Need filled her and she cursed. Her libido was picking a strange time to wake back up.“Bay,” he grumbled, and she froze. She loved the sound of her name on his lips. Or rather, her wolf did. The woman desperately wanted not to like it. Damn mating bond.

Healing Notes by Maggie Jaimeson

Healing Notesby Maggie Jaimeson~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Rachel Cullen grew up in Scotland with a fiddle in her hand from the age of four. She couldn't imagine life as anything but a musician. When her husband brought her to America she was immediately embraced by the Celtic and Bluegrass communities. But after her divorce, Rachel's life is a mess.
A year of trying to prove to herself that she's woman enough for any man, and then a vicious rape while on tour with the band, leaves Rachel reeling. When she meets Noel Kershaw, an English teacher who is poetry in motion, she is definitely attracted. But he has a young child and he's suffering from his own divorce. The last thing Rachel needs in life is more baggage.
First, Rachel must reconcile who she is, what she wants, and how to get there. Maybe then she'll know how to be a part of the family she's always wanted.
Excerpt:
As she reached for the handle, the door opened and a little girl rushed out, maybe six or seven years old, with beautiful long blond hair caught up in a blue denim bow. She ran to a light blue sedan next to Rachel’s and giggled as she skipped through puddles circling the car. Rachel couldn’t help but smile at the child’s carefree innocence.
After three circles, the girl stopped at the back end of the car, cocked her head and waved two fingers at her. “Hi.”
“Um, hi.” Rachel raised her hand and waved back. “Did you forget somebody? Your mommy maybe?”
“Claire, I told you to stay close.”
At the sound of the tenor voice beside her, Rachel started. A man three to four inches taller than her had stepped out. In one hand he held several colorful ribbons attached to a bright pink, heart-shaped helium balloon that read Happy Birthday. He looked toward the car where the child was still giggling.
The little girl raced back. Skidding to a stop in front of Rachel, they bumped and Rachel teetered slightly toward the wall.
“Careful there.” A weathered hand reached toward her and wrapped around her elbow. His touch was softer than she expected, but her knees still locked, ready to spring if she needed to move fast. He held her up with one hand. Deep brown eyes, emphasized by his full head of short, wavy blonde hair, looked at her then turned toward the girl.”
“Apologize, Claire. You almost knocked her over.”
“I’m sorry.” A small hand lifted to touch her other arm.
“That’s okay. Really. I should have been paying more attention.” Rachel smiled and pointed to the balloon. “Latha breith.”
“Excuse me?”
“Oh, I…” She had lapsed into Gaelic. Something she hadn’t done in public since Kavan left her almost three years ago. “I said ‘Happy Birthday.’”
Maggie will award one autographed cover flat to a randomly drawn commenter at each blog stop. In addition, she will award a $25 gift card to either Amazon or Barnes and Noble (winner's choice) as a grand prize to one randomly selected commenter on this tour, and a $25 gift certificate to either Amazon or Barnes and Noble (winner's choice) to a randomly drawn host. You must leave an email address to be entered into any of the drawings.

Character Interview with Matt and Jordan from CHARMED SPIRITS
Carrie Ann Ryan: Thank you so much y’all for having us on your blog! I love getting a chance to sit down with my characters and see what they’re up to.
Matt: Hi, Carrie Ann, thanks for inviting us!Jordan: Yes, thanks, hon.
Carrie Ann: So, tell me, how was it to get your story told in Charmed Spirits?Matt: Creepy?Jordan: *smacks his arm* Really? Our love is creepy?
Matt: *rubs arm then kisses Jordan’s temple* I was trying to be cute since is a Halloween story. Jordan: *rolls eyes* It was odd having the world know how we got back together, but I like knowing how cute and sexy Matt is.Matt: *kisses her* Yep, that was a plus.
Carrie Ann: *rolls eyes* What were your first impressions of each other?
Matt: Well, we were five or so, so I think I hated her cooties.Jordan: Yes, you ran from me, hunky man you are. But once those girls started to make fun of me for being a witch, you were my best friend.Matt: Still am.
Carrie Ann: *awww* So, are things different now that your relationship is older, yet newer?
Matt: Other than now we don’t have to sneak behind the bleachers to make out?Jordan: Though that is still fun…Matt: *kisses Jordan*
Carrie Ann: *clears throat*
Jordan: *pulls back and blushes* Oh, sorry. What was the question? Oh yeah, well, we’re both more sure of ourselves and are more open. It works for both of us.
Carrie Ann: Matt, how do you feel about Jordan’s powers?Matt: She’s amazing the way she is. It’s empowering to watch her in action.
Carrie Ann: Jordan, how do you feel about your powers?
Jordan: Safe. For the first time, safe.
Carrie Ann: What about that thing that happened with Matt? *wink*
Matt: *winks back* Readers will just have to see.
Jordan: Oooh, mysterious!
Carrie Ann: Where are you living now?
Matt: We moved into Jordan’s place since my apartment was going to be too small for when we have kids.Jordan: Kids? Wow, look at you saying that word without fainting.Matt: I’m growing up.
Carrie Ann: How is Holiday?
Matt: The town is changing. I mean, they knew about witches, but now with haunted houses and other things coming to town, they’re starting to get used to the paranormal. It works.Jordan: Plus, with those people gone, the town is nicer.
Carrie Ann: How are the Cooper brothers?
Jordan: Sexy as ever.
Carrie Ann: Hell yeah!
Matt: *growls* My brothers are fine, though something is going on with Justin and he’s not telling us.
Carrie Ann: Okay, fun questions. What’s your favorite thing about each other?
Matt: Her spirit.Jordan: That he’s always been there.
Carrie Ann: *awww*Carrie Ann: Chocolate or Vanilla?
Matt: Anything I can lick off of Jordan.Jordan: *blushes* Chocolate. What else?
Carrie Ann: Beer or Wine?
Matt: Beer, but I’ll drink a good wine.Jordan: Same for me.
Carrie Ann: Soft or Hard?Matt & Jordan: Hard.
Carrie Ann: Well, thanks y’all for coming and sitting down with me. I really do love y’all. Now, go have fun with yourselves. *wink*

Jordan Cross has returned to Holiday, Montana after eleven long years to clear out her late aunt’s house, put it on the market, and figure out what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Soon, she finds herself facing the town that turned its back on her because she was different. Because being labeled a witch in a small town didn’t earn her many friends...especially when it wasn't a lie.
Matt Cooper has lived in Holiday his whole life. He's perfectly content being a bachelor alongside his four single brothers in a very small town. After all, the only woman he'd ever loved ran out on him without a goodbye. But now Jordan’s back and just as bewitching as ever. Can they rekindle their romance with a town set against them?
Warning: Contains an intelligent, sexy witch with an attitude and drop-dead gorgeous man who likes to work with his hands, holds a secret that might scare someone, and really, really, likes table tops for certain activities. Enough said.

Fresh Friday Reads: The Snow is Coming!

It seems the holidays are coming since I read a few Christmas stories this week. My own Christmas story won't come out until December LOL. So, what have you read this week?

PATRICK RIORDAN ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT NOTHING COULD MATCH THE ADRENALINE RUSH HE GETS FROM HIS JOB. BUT THIS CHRISTMAS, PATRICK’S PULSE IS REALLY RACING...
The Riordan brothers may have a reputation for being rough-and tumble, but Patrick has always been the gentle, sweet-natured one. These days, his easygoing manner is being tested by his high-octane career as a navy pilot. But for the Riordan brothers, when the going gets tough…the tough find the love of a good woman.
Except the woman who has caught Patrick’s attention is Jack Sheridan’s very attractive niece.
Angie LeCroix comes to Virgin River to spend Christmas relaxing, away from her well-intentioned but hovering mother. Yet instead of freedom, she gets Jack Sheridan. If her uncle had his way, she’d never go out again. And certainly not with rugged, handsome Patrick Riordan. But Angie has her own idea of the kind of Christmas she wants—and the kind of man!
Patrick and Angie thought they wanted to be left alone this Christmas—until they meet each other. Then they want to be left alone together. But the Sheridan and Riordan families have different plans for Patrick and Angie—and for Christmas, Virgin River–style!

After growing up in cheap motels, moving from town to town with her sister and mother, Cheyenne Christensen is grateful to be on her own. She's grateful, too, for the friends she found once her family settled in California. But she's troubled by the mystery of her earliest memories, most of which feature a smiling blonde woman. A woman who isn't her mother.
Although Cheyenne has repeatedly asked for explanations, the people who could help aren't talking. Cheyenne is set on finding answers, but without so much as a birth certificate, it won't be easy.
Things get even more complicated when her closest friend is attracted to the man Cheyenne has secretly loved for years. For Eve's sake, she decides to step aside — which lands her right in the arms of Dylan Amos, oldest and baddest of the hell-raising Amos brothers. He's the kind of guy she's sworn to avoid. She can't afford to make a mistake, not when she finally has a chance to learn who she really is and change her life for the better. But . . . maybe there's more to Dylan than she thought. Maybe letting him go would be a bigger mistake.

Thursday Tales: Krystal Shannon

Hi! Thanks so much for coming today. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi my name is Krystal Shannan and I’m a romance writer. I’ve been struggling with this condition for over ten years. It’s a constant battle of wills between the characters in my head and my own consciousness. *Giggle*I do hope to start winning the war, now that my first novella is published. Perhaps a few characters will cease their caterwauling.
The constant plotting while sleeping is literally driving my husband crazy. Yes, I talk in my sleep and apparently the conversations sometimes get a little racy. *Smirk* I know he enjoys it more than he lets on.
I am a happily married woman for nine years. With a fabulous husband who is gung ho for me to be successful with my writing. We have the most beautiful baby on the planet that is two and a half years old. Wow! She keeps us hopping.
I teach elementary music at an elementary school. *evil laugh* Well somebody has to get paid to sing and dance with your children, why not me?

OPEN HOUSE was developed by one of my muses – code named Aphrodite. She came to me one day and proceeded to tell me all about her millennia old job of joining soul mates, where she kept them, etc. She started telling me about all these couples that she had helped find true love with their soul mate and then she proceeded to tell me about all the drama in her own life and how the gods are all jealous of her because she is so important to humanity. I instantly knew this would be a fabulous series and the Pool of Souls Series was born. OPEN HOUSE is the first of several Pool of Souls books.
Is this part of a series?
Yes, I thought it was going to be a trilogy at first, but since then Aphrodite has shared more and we are leaning toward … I have no earthly idea at this moment. The goddess is very bossy.
What was your favorite part?
My favorite part is the first love scene between Robert and Rebecca where he *Ahem* has her for dinner.
Why did you choose to write romance?
I LOVE Happily Ever Afters! If a book isn’t about a budding relationship, I lose interest. I’m sorry, I know there are fabulous books out there that aren’t romance, but they are not at the top of my TBR list.
Do you ever have any conversations in your head with your characters? If so, can you give us a hint of what you might talk about?
Ummmmm…. Yes, I do talk to them, eavesdrop on them, and every once in a while slap them around when they go off on a tangent. That actually just happened with a couple in my latest WIP. They were whispering in my ear as I was writing and they took the story way off into nowhere. A gentle poke from my CP, April London, and a few slaps to the hero and heroine got them back on track and a much better chapter in the end.
Honestly, I think they were just in a hurry to get jiggy with each other, but for the sake of the story they had to wait.
Rate your story in terms of steaminess (Make up your own fun scale here)
On a volcanic scale – sweet and serene, warm and smoky, flowing molten lava, and raining fire ……. I would have to say flowing molten lava!
What are you reading right now?
I hope I’m going to be reading your latest and greatest, Carrie! *Wink* You know I’m your favorite.
But, lets look at the kindle…. Lakota Surrender by Karen Kay … The Chalice by PL Parker … Shut Up and Kiss Me by Christie Craig … and Thomas by Liliana Hart
I know this is like asking who is your favorite child, who is your favorite romance author (s)?
The author that made me fall in love with romance was Jude Devereaux.
What is your favorite romance book or series?
I don’t even have to think for this one! Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Who is your favorite romance character? If you could go on a date with that person, what would you do? Details please! *wink*
I’m a married woman *giggle* This would never be okay with my hubby, but I would just swoon if Acheron was available and I wasn’t married.
Boxers or Briefs?
Boxers!
Chocolate or Vanilla?
Dark Chocolate
Do you have a special piece of clothing you wear when you write?
The most comfortable thing that’s clean.
What is next for you?Wow! So, I have two more Pool of Souls books planned so far… Several holiday romps are written and coming out soon (One with Decadent Publishing) the other will be self-published and is the start of a new series – The Demakis Line (Werewolves!) Another series is in the works as well, my six sentence Sundays have been featuring Darren and Eshe, my lion shifters.
What were your first impressions of each other?
Robert:I had a crush on her since high school, but I was kind of a geek growing up. She was so beautiful and sweet, but just way out of my league.
Rebecca: I thought you were adorable in high school, but I think the nice lady is talking about when you saw me just recently. (Robert pokes her in the ribs) Hey! Well, Robert was it for me too in high school. No guy ever measured up to him. It was a good thing fate brought us back together, because I would never have been happy with another man.
What are your favorite parts about each other?
Rebecca: Robert’s sense of humor, hands down.
Robert:Rebecca’s heart. She’s so kind and thoughtful.
What’s next for you?
Rebecca and Robert: Make babies!

Krystal has been writing stories since she could hold a pencil. She has always dreamed of writing romance and sharing the “movies in her head” with the world. If she’s not writing, she’s reading –historical, paranormal, action, adventure –anything she can get her hands on that ends with a Happily Ever After!
OPEN HOUSE Blurb:Intrinsically woven into the fabric of human existence, Aphrodite, Titan Goddess of Love and Passion, dedicates herself to matching soul mates.
Rebecca Carol and Robert Corvin missed their original chance to bond when Ares, God of War, took control of Robert's career ten years ago. Their souls have naturally pulled them back together for a second chance at love, but... How far will the gods go to get their own way?
Will divine influence create another perfect match or will it tear them apart forever?
Excerpt:A deep male voice boomed through her garden, breaking her concentration. “Aphrodite!” The images of Robert and Rebecca swirled and were lost as the pool’s surface went clear. She turned to face the irate male.“Ditee! Why can’t you just leave well enough alone?”Aphrodite leaned against the cool rock and gave him a lazy smile. She’d expected Ares to complain. Robert Corvin played a key role in research and weapon development for the United States. No human got into his position without a little shove from the god of war.“I will do exactly as I wish, especially when it comes to souls who have searched as long as these two have.”“He’s mine, Ditee. I’ve finally got him where he will be of most use, and now I hear he has moved. Because of a girl! I knew it was your fault. Hands off.” His eyes flashed red, and a deep growl rumbled from his chest.Aphrodite rose to face him. Her power rose and flamed within her, causing her skin to glow white. Ares took a step back. “You will not speak to me so rudely,” she said, her voice taking on its godly attributes, booming across the garden like a sonic wave. Ares stumbled a little from the force. “I am your superior. These souls deserve to be together, and you will not interfere.”“The hell I won’t.”
