Laguna Lodge — Limon
Photo: Booking.com
The murky brown waterways of Tortuguero National Park are a haven for wildlife, and the Laguna Lodge places you right in the heart of this wetland wilderness. Accessible only by boat, this ecolodge rests on a spit of sand that separates the Caribbean Sea from one of the many canals and lagoons that make up the labyrinth that is Tortuguero. It’s one of the most beautiful — and private — of Costa Rica hotels. Take advantage of the full repertoire of activities that Laguna Lodge has on offer: expect to see caimans, crocs, sloths, howler monkeys, and even river dolphins on the boat tour or discover the park’s under your own steam on the guided kayak tour.
Tortuguero’s main draw, however, is the sea turtles. This tiny stretch of sand is one of the most important turtle nesting sites on the whole Caribbean coastline. Laguna Lodge runs night tours in its own backyard during nesting season (July to October) and hatching season (September to November). Visit in October and you might be privileged enough to experience both.

Nayara Gardens, Nayara Springs, and Nayara Tented Camps Resorts — La Fortuna
Photo: Booking.com
At the foot of Arenal, Costa Rica’s most famous volcano, lies a once-barren landscape that’s been laboriously restored into verdant rainforest by the efforts of the Nayara Resorts group. Their hotel complex consists of three separate collections in one location, but while the lodgings in the Nayara Springs (adults only) and Nayara Gardens are exquisite, Nayara’s jewel is its Tented Camp.
Here you can watch in awe as macaws and toucans flash overhead while you enjoy a floating breakfast from your own private infinity pool at one of Nayara’s safari-style luxury tents. Later, roam the rest of the Nayara complex on the lookout for more animals, especially from the forest’s hanging bridges where in-house expert naturalists are always on hand to name for you a particular bird or butterfly or point you in the direction of the nearest resident sloth.
Price: From $280 per night
Parador Resort and Spa — Punta Quepos
Photo: Booking.com
Parador Resort and Spa was one of the early standard-bearers for sustainable luxury in Costa Rica. Located at the edge of Manuel Antonio National Park, Parador is a veritable haven for tropical birds, monkeys, and especially sloths – the hotel’s extensive grounds are a popular release site for the Sloth Institute, a non-profit that works tirelessly to rehabilitate injured animals. For the best wildlife watching, join one of Parador’s knowledgeable on-site naturalists on a tour of the two-kilometer “monkey trail” that loops through the dense secondary forest preserved on the hotel grounds.
Here, sightings of the impudent white-faced capuchins are guaranteed – but you’ll most likely have already caught them sipping from one of the hotel’s three infinity pools. At the end of the day, savor the sunset over the Pacific from your suite terrace before heading down to the outstanding restaurant to sample chef Rodrigo Salazar’s world-class menu, served up using only the very best locally sourced foods.
Price: From $189
Chachagua Rainforest Hotel and Hot Springs — La Fortuna
Photo: Booking.com
Chachagua Rainforest Hotel and Hot Springs is folded into ninety-four acres of exquisite forest which serves as part of a biological corridor for some of the country’s most exciting animal and bird species, including the elusive puma. The resort offers a broad range of excursions in partnership with small, locally run tour operators as well as two excellent on-site tours on the wild grounds themselves.
The Night Hike Frog March brings you up close and personal with Costa Rica’s iconic red-eyed tree frog and other creatures of the night, while the day tour follows a meandering trail that will see you strafing waterfalls and fording bubbling brooks on the hunt for wildlife. At the end of the tour, children are handed the opportunity to plant their own tree on the hotel’s grounds: a neat metaphor for Chachagua’s commitment to preserving the rainforest for future generations.

For the best chance of seeing them, visit during the peak months of September and October and join a whale-watching tour organized by the hotel. After a day on the water, retire to your luxury treehouse lodgings where the floor-to-ceiling windows bring the jungle into your room. Then take to your private decking for a soak-in hot tub, cocktail in hand, and keep your eyes fixed on the ocean horizon to catch another glimpse of those extraordinary mammals.

These underwear are a must-have when you travel during your period

Getting on a long flight when you’re on your period has to be in the top-five most awkward situations. Airplane bathrooms are notoriously tiny and yucky, with taps that only let out a small trickle of water, and the trash bins are too weird to even mention. And if you’re bleeding, a dreaded trip to the bathroom to change a tampon, empty a menstrual cup, or replace a pad is usually needed about every two hours.
But there’s a way to either delay a trip to the bathroom or even steer clear of it entirely: Period underwear.
I tried my first pair of Knix’s period underwear in 2018. At the time, I had been using a combo of homemade cloth pads and a Diva Cup for about eight years, but I was dealing with leaks and stains almost every month. Not only was it frustrating for a woman in her 30s, but also time-consuming — washing blood off sheets and pants is a routine I could very happily live without. So, in a spur-of-the-moment decision, I visited Knix’s website and purchased one pair of their period underwear called Leakproof Boyshorts in black in size M for less than $25.

Photo: Knixwear/Facebook
While the purchase was spontaneous, the choice of underwear wasn’t. Knix has a large range of cuts of period underwear (boxer briefs, shorts, boyshorts, bikini, cheeky, and thongs) in a huge variety of colors and motifs. I chose boyshorts because I wanted a style in which I would feel comfy and secure, and I picked black because I could avoid long-lasting stains. M was the perfect size for me as I am 5’4 and 140 lbs.
The choice of the brand was also very deliberate. Knix sells underwear for all women, regardless of their size or skin color. Their website is a wonderful celebration of the female body with women that look like you and your friends: round, pregnant, busty, thin, with stretch marks and cellulite, etc. A far cry from what you’d see on other lingerie websites.
I tested out my period underwear at home for a couple of cycles and was very surprised by how well it worked. I used it as a back-up with my Diva Cup for the first day of my period and, after a quick wash and an even quicker dry, I used it again later in my cycle, on its own, when my flow was not as heavy. There were no leaks and no stains.
Knix’s period underwear became part of my eco-friendly period kit and I kept it nice and ready for when my cycle started. I took it with me on trips, leaving my homemade cloth pads (that attach with a safety pin, no less) at home, saving luggage space along the way. In the airplane, the underwear was a dream — no need to change a pad or fear standing up in front of hundreds of people with a stained pair of pants. Knix’s period underwear are fail-proof.
For those who travel a lot, there’s value in Knix’s period underwear beyond the leakproof technology. If you happen to find yourself in a place where period products are hard to find or don’t work for you, you won’t need to panic because all you need is already in your bag. Also, if you’re in a remote area hiking or camping, you won’t need to store your used products somewhere in your bag until you find a bin — you can just throw your period underwear in your dirty laundry bag. (They dry fast and won’t stain the rest of your clothes.)

Photo: Knixwear/Facebook
I wore and washed my beloved Knix’s period underwear for over three years during every single cycle before the trim started to peel. I now keep it as an emergency option and have purchased a pack of three Super Leakproof Boyshorts to replace it. By buying a pack of three, I saved 25 percent off my order, which amounts to only $22.50 for each piece. I picked the same size, but went for a crazy floral purple motif with a four-layer black gusset — I’m really not worried about having to wash out any stains any longer.
Three days in Black-owned Houston: Retracing the past, stepping into the future

Houston feels like home. I noticed it before I even had the chance to visit it properly. Perhaps it was my ancestors welcoming me — ancestors who built a safe-haven for the formerly enslaved, which would become known as Freedmen’s Town, over 150 years ago.
I spent three days retracing the steps of the past, supporting Black-owned businesses, and learning about the amazing things to come in the future for the Black people of Houston. There’s an endless list of things to see and do in Black-owned Houston; however, if you only have three days in the city, here’s the perfect itinerary that weaves in the past, present, and future of this great Texas city.
Day oneMorningbreakfast at Mo’ Better Brews
Photo: Mo’ Better Brews/Facebook
Start your day at Mo’ Better Brews, Houston’s first Black-owned vegan coffee shop. This spot is all about coffee, vegan food, and vinyls. Browse through the record collection while waiting for your order of fried oyster mushrooms tossed in spiced agave and served over a creamy bed of grits — sweet and savory decadence at its finest. Sip on a cup of Bleek & Indigo coffee, a reference to the characters in the movie Mo’ Better Blues. The Ethiopian and Columbian blend was created specially by local Black-owned roasters, Three Keys Coffee for Mo’ Better Brews.
Note that the vibes don’t have to end at breakfast. You can also come back in the evenings and enjoy open mic, live music, and poetry nights.
Where: 1201 Southmore Blvd, Houston, TX 77004, USA
Spend the rest of the morning museum hoppingOne thing you will find in abundance in Houston are museums — there are over 150 museums and cultural institutions in the Greater Houston area. 19 of those museums are located in Houston’s Museum District, a cultural and arts destination that garners over seven million annual visits. 11 of the museums in the Museum District are free, so take advantage of it. Start at the Buffalo Soldier Museum and learn about the history and contributions of the African Americans who served in every great American war. This is the only museum in the United States dedicated to the Black soldiers that serve in the armed forces, so it is absolutely worth the visit.
Where: 3816 Caroline St. Houston, TX 77004, USA
Take a four-minute walk (or two-minute drive) down the street to the Community Artists’ Collective. The Collective provides a platform for local Black artists. This gallery offers free admission but accepts donations.
Where: 4101 San Jacinto St, Suite 116, Houston, TX 77004, USA
Take another 10-minute stroll to the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) and wander through the small, yet powerful exhibitions that explore the culture of those across the African Diaspora in Texas, specifically Houston, and the southwest. Make sure to check out the two and three-dimensional works of art in the permanent exhibition A Black Perspective.

AfternoonLunch at Taste Bar + Kitchen
Photo: Taste Bar + Kitchen/Facebook
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Black-owned restaurant Taste Bar + Kitchen. Chicken and waffles are a staple in Houston, and this restaurant’s spin on this classic, sweet and savory dish will leave you craving seconds and thirds. We recommend the Cajun chicken paired with a peach cobbler waffle; the General Tso’s chicken with a Red Velvet waffle; and the vegan chicken and waffle option. For an extra side of deliciousness, order the bacon and lobster smoked gouda mac and cheese. And if you want to drink your dessert, try the Key Lime Pie or Cotton Candy cocktail. They will certainly satisfy your sweet tooth.
The playlist at Taste Bar + Kitchen will make it hard to tear yourself away from your seat to leave. The 80s and 90s classics belting out from the speakers will tempt you to whip out your invisible microphone and have a concert of your own. However, there’s more to see and do in Black-owned Houston, so wrap it up and let’s head to our next stop.
Where: 3015 Bagby St, Houston, TX 77006, USA
Make your own Houston souvenirAfter lunch, pop over to Love & Make and create your own personalized Houston souvenir. Love & Make is a fun Black-owned candle-making workshop with over 60 different scents that you can choose from to make your own candles, soaps, and bath bombs. The staff will teach you all about the ingredients, the differences between the types of oils and fragrance mixing so that your keepsake will be something you can enjoy long after your visit.

EveningDrinks at Lost & Found
Photo: Lost & Found Houston/Facebook
It’s time to wind down your first day in Black-owned Houston, and there’s no better way to do just that than with good eats and good vibes at Lost & Found. This Fourth Ward Black-owned bar and restaurant serves up drinks that are just as fun as the bold decor. Try one of the signature cocktails like the DGK, a Sour Patch Kids-infused vodka with lime, cranberry, and a sugar rim. Hang out on the pet-friendly patio and watch your favorite sports team on a big screen, or dine indoors to the sound of their epic playlist. The cajun pasta with chicken and shrimp is a must-try.
Where: 160 W Gray St, Houston, TX 77019, USA
Day twoMorningFuel up at Throughgood CoffeeIf you don’t mind a 15-minute drive outside the city center, head over to Throughgood Coffee, Not only does Throughgood Coffee has a rustic-chic decor that would make Chip and Joanna Gaines proud, it delivers delicious coffee and locally sourced baked goods while providing resources and housing for previously homeless people in Houston. There’s an outdoor seating area perfect for easing into your day, and a taco truck in the parking lot so you can grab a quick savory bite. Fun fact: The owner of both Throughgood Coffee and Soul Taco food truck is Beyoncé’s former pastor, so a visit here basically means you know Beyoncé, right?

AfternoonDive into Midtown’s art scene
Photo: Mini Murals/Facebook
Midtown Houston is a popular, walkable neighborhood with a great cultural scene. Take a stroll in the parks before paying a visit to The Ensemble Theatre — the oldest and largest African-American professional theatre company in the US that owns and operates its own facility and produces plays in-house. Check out the schedule to see what shows are playing during your visit.
Where: 3535 Main Street, Houston, TX 77002, USA
While in Midtown, take a self-guided tour of Houston’s street art. These vibrant paintings make for the perfect Instagram backdrop. Here are some must-see murals:
“Black Cassidy of Houston Mural” at 2800 Fannin St. Houston, TX, 77004, USA“Gorilla Mural” at 3701 Main St. Houston, TX, 77002, USA“Preservons La Creation Mural” at 2860 Fannin St. Houston, TX, 77002, USAThe many Mini murals sprinkled around MidtownFor even more street art beauty, take a quick five-minute drive over to the Houston Graffiti Building, and the surrounding area, where you’ll discover a rotating display of murals.
Where: 1503 Chartres St, Houston, TX 77003, USA
Lunch at Lucille’sLucille’s is a Black-owned restaurant inside a 1920s Mission-style home, right in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Downstairs, the atmosphere is one of a regular restaurant, but upstairs feels like Sunday dinner at grandma’s house — everything from the floral wallpaper, the worn wooden floors, and the decorative plates hung on the walls is a homely throwback.
Lucille’s attracts a diverse, family-oriented crowd in its cozy interior. Tunes ranging from Teddy Pendergrass to Usher fill the space, while you’re being served Southern favorites like shrimp and grits, yardbird, and stewed okra and tomatoes.
Where: 5512 La Branch St., Houston, Texas 77004, USA
Hang out at one of Houston’s iconic landmarks
Photo: Uptown Houston/Facebook
Trying to pack the best of Black-owned Houston into three days is nearly impossible, and will leave you exhausted, so give yourself permission to slow down and take a beat. One of the best places to do this in the city is Houston’s Water Wall in Uptown. Not only is it free, but the three-acre park features a 64-foot, cascading water feature and is one of Houston’s most iconic landmarks. It’s not Black-owned; however, there are still ways to support local Black-owned businesses while having a quiet time in the park. Grab some sweet treats from Crumbville, the butter pecan crunch cookie and red velvet cupcakes are my favorites (they also have vegan and gluten-free options).
Where: 2800 Post Oak Blvd, Houston, TX 77056, USA
EveningDinner and drinks at Trez Art & Wine Bar
Photo: Trez Art & Wine Bar/Facebook
Enjoy some art with your drinks at Trez Art & Wine Bar. Trez is the only Black woman-owned wine bar in Houston, offering a selection from boutique wineries, as well as female winemakers like Aslina Wines (created by Ntsiki Biyela, the first South African woman winemaker), and African American winemakers, such as Pur Noire. Trez is all about supporting local artists and minority businesses. Most nights of the week, you’ll find a live DJ; however, on the first and third Saturdays of the month you can vibe out to a live band. You won’t be disappointed by the menu items or the drinks. Ask for bartender Keewee to whip you up a “Naked by KG”. This Old-Fashion with a twist is a secret drink you won’t find on the menu that was created for Houston’s very own, Khaliah O. Guillory — owner of the Black-owned rest sanctuary, Nap Bar.
Where: 920 Studemont St #150, Houston, TX 77007, USA
Day threeMorningBreakfast at The Breakfast KlubYou can’t come to Houston and not have breakfast at The Breakfast Klub. Even my Uber driver, an older white guy, couldn’t stop raving about the place. The thing to order at The Breakfast Klub is chicken and waffles because this is arguably the best in town (the chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and seasoned and juicy on the inside.) But if you’ve had enough chicken and waffles on this trip, there’s an extensive menu with delicious items, including a selection of breakfast sandwiches and omelettes. Just note that you need to get there early. I arrived around 6:50 AM and there was already a line down the block with people waiting for the doors to open at 7 AM.

AfternoonDedicate your afternoon to Freedmen’s Town
Photo: Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy/Facebook
Houston is a thriving city filled with people of all backgrounds. It’s also a city with a deep-rooted history tucked behind the shadows of the new and shiny highrises. Freedmen’s Town, located in the Fourth Ward neighborhood, is the city’s most historically important African-American community. It was founded in 1866 when newly emancipated African Americans purchased land and turned the area into a vibrant and safe haven for Blacks. Spend the afternoon on a self-guided walking tour, learning all about the history that helped shape what Houston has become today. Here are some stops to make along the way:
Bethel Baptist Church: Historic church in Houston that now serves as a community parkWhere: 25 Tidwell Rd. Houston, TX 77022 Gregory School: Now housing the city’s first African-American Library
Where: 500 McKinney St. Houston, TX 77002 Emancipation Park: $1000 was raised by the community to purchase this 10-acre piece of land to host Juneteenth celebrations
Where: 3018 Emancipation Ave. Houston, TX 77004 The Rutherford B.H. Yates House: Formerly a publishing house for newspapers for the Black community
Where: Andrews St & Wilson St. Houston, TX 77019 Project Row Houses: Row houses in Houston’s Third Ward that have been restored and turned into artist studios and homes for single mothers
Where: 2521 Holman St Houston, TX, 77004, United States Freedmen’s Town Farmer’s Market: Visit on Saturdays and purchase goods from local Black and Hispanic vendors
Where: 1108 Victor St, Houston, TX 77019 Antioch Baptist Church: The first African American Baptist Church in Houston organized by former slaves
Where: 500 Clay St, Houston, TX 77002
Houston’s Freedmen’s Town Conservancy is working to preserve the legacy, stories, and heritage of Freedmen’s Town. One way the Conservancy has achieved this goal is by gaining UNESCO recognition for seven sites, as a part of the Slave Route Project. The Conservancy is currently developing a Community Center where visitors will be able to learn more about the area, as well as an app that will allow tourists to journey through Freedmen’s Town on an immersive walking tour.
Then, there’s the proposed Emancipation Trail, the 51-mile route from Gavelston to Houston that would highlight historic landmarks along the route that enslaved people took after they were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865. It would be only the second trail in the US to commemorate the history of African Americans.
Lunch at Houston Grub ParkGrab lunch at Houston’s Black-owned food truck park, Houston Grub Park. You will be spoilt for choice with at least 30 options to pick from. Everything from Asian-inspired Southern food to finger-licking-good Low-Country Boils is on the menu. The food truck park is only open from Thursdays to Sundays and is near the NFL stadium and light rail, making it easy to get to other Houston activities, like festivals, concerts, and Astros games.

Evening3rd Ward Bicycle Tours
Photo: Let’s do this Houston/Facebook
A curated bike tour with 3rd Ward Tours will be the highlight of your trip in Black-owned Houston. You’ll find different themes with every tour such as Afrobeats night, R&B night, 90s night, etc. I went on a Fantastic Voyage-themed ride that took my group around the city while following a truck blaring out the sounds of DJ Elevated and DJ Anarchy. If you haven’t ridden a bike in a while, don’t worry. These rides cater to exactly those who haven’t. They are slow and have guides to help you along the way. Touring the town on bikes fitted with LED lights is the perfect to a three-day trip in Black-owned Houston.

Watch: These ultra-expensive megaprojects around the world turned out to be failures

If you sometimes wonder where your tax dollars end up, we’ve got the answer for you: failed, outrageously expensive megaprojects.
YouTube channel Top Luxury selected five expensive megaprojects from around the world that were abandoned, significantly delayed, remain almost empty to this day, and cost way more than the initial estimate.
The first megaproject outlined in Top Luxury’s video is the six-lane Interstate H-3 that links Honolulu to the east side of Oʻahu in Hawaii. While the project was proposed in 1960, it was not completed until 1997 and cost $1.3 billion instead of the $250 million that was initially planned, Hawaii Magazine reports. The delay was mostly due to significant environmental and cultural concerns from Native Hawaiians, which were eventually dismissed. While Top Luxury described Interstate H-3 as a “useless project,” it is hardly the case as many commenters explained below the video. It is a well-used highway and is considered one of the easiest ways to get around the island.
One megaproject mentioned by Top Luxury that is sure to have been a waste of time, effort, and money is the Ciudad Real Central Airport in Spain. According to a report from the European Parliament, the airport, which cost more than $1.3 billion, opened in 2008 and closed in 2012. Meant to alleviate traffic from Madrid’s Barajas airport, the new airport ended up being much too far away from the capital city to be of any appeal to travelers. During its three years of operation, it received flights from only two airlines, Ryanair and Vueling, Forbes reports. Ciudad Real Central Airport was eventually sold to Ciudad Real International Airport SL in 2018 and used as a glorified parking lot for grounded planes when the COVID-19 pandemic began and air traffic came to a halt.
Top Luxury’s video exposes three other expensive failed megaprojects:
Naypyidaw, Myanmar: The new capital of Myanmar that features 20-lane highways and reportedly cost over $4 billion but remains almost empty.Forest City, Malaysia: A huge city built on four man-made islands in Malaysia, right across the border from Singapore. The project is supposed to be finished by 2035 and house 700,0000 residents, but it remains almost empty and seems doomed for political reasons.
Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository, Nevada, US: This immense underground tunnel meant to store nuclear waste will likely never see the light of day and has been put on pause because of environmental and health concerns. The project has already cost $19 billion, CBS reports.

France’s President changed the colors of the French flag, and no one noticed

France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, has changed the colors of the French flag. A surprising piece of news that is only topped by the fact that the flag was actually altered on July 13, 2020. No one seemed to notice.
French radio station Europe 1 announced the change on November 15, but no formal statement has been made by the President’s office.
Despite the change, the colors of the French flag remain blue, white, and red. Only the shade of blue was altered, from a light blue to a navy blue. Can you spot the difference?

Photos: Frederic Legrand – COMEO/Shutterstock and Frederic Legrand – COMEO/Shutterstock
The lighter blue was chosen in 1976 to more closely match the flag of the European Union, euronews reports. Before that, France’s flag had used navy blue since the 18th century.
The return to the darker navy shade is meant to pay tribute to those who fought in the French Revolution, World War I, and World War II, officials from the President’s office explained.
However, some are interpreting the change as a sign that the country wants to step away from the European Union.
The new, year-old French flag now flies on all the buildings linked to the presidency, such as the Elysée Palace (the President’s residence), the Assemblée Nationale (one of the two houses of the French Parliament), and more.
The French flag isn’t the only one to have changed over the years. The flags of Canada, South Africa, and even the United States have all changed since the 20th century, as these flag animations show.
Anyone who loves Japanese food needs to stock up on this condiment

In the United States, mayonnaise is often relegated to foods like potato salad and deviled eggs. But for those who love Japanese food, one specific type of mayonnaise can do so much more: Kewpie mayo.
Though Kewpie has been available for years, a viral ramen hack that took off on TikTok earlier this year put the social-media spotlight on the iconic Japanese condiment. The videos center on teaching home cooks to elevate their instant noodles by incorporating a beaten egg, minced garlic to taste, and a dollop of mayo. When combined slowly with the starchy cooking liquid, the mixture emulsifies, creating a rich, creamy broth using the same technique behind pasta carbonara’s glossy sauce, explains Sarah Kasai, sous chef at the Bay Area’s popular Ramen Shop.
Kasai has yet to try the hack, but she knows as well as anyone that Japanese-style mayonnaise is the secret to this dressed-up ramen recipe. Growing up, she remembers noting the differences between the Kewpie mayonnaise her bāchan, or grandmother, stocked and the Best Foods mayonnaise her mother always bought.
“It was funny as a kid realizing, ‘Oh, yeah, this mayonnaise that bāchan uses tastes way better,’” she tells me over the phone, adding that Kewpie is now a staple in her own household.
@josephinelindtMayo ramen 🍜🍜 SO GOOD!! #noodlehack #ramenhack #noodletok #fyp #foodtok #easyrecipes
Kewpie mayonnaise is as ubiquitous in Japan as Best Foods mayonnaise is stateside. Brand founder Toichiro Nakashima began manufacturing the condiment in 1925 after sampling American-style mayo on a trip to the US. His aim was to create a nutritious, protein-rich spread that paired well with vegetables to promote healthy eating in Japan.
The recipe follows the same basic formula as any mayo: It’s a simple emulsion of egg, oil, and acid. Rather than using whole eggs, however, Kewpie uses just yolks (four for every 500 grams to be exact) and swaps white vinegar for rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar. This results in a thicker, yellower mayonnaise than the typical American-style mayo.
Kewpie fans also praise its savoriness, or umami flavor, owing to the use of MSG seasoning. Incidentally, MSG is also the reason celebrity chef David Chang dubbed Kewpie the world’s best mayo.
A novelty at the time, Nakashima’s recipe is now a Japanese staple. It’s used to top street foods like okonomiyaki (savory cabbage and egg pancakes), takoyaki (octopus balls), and yakisoba noodles. It’s a key ingredient in tamago sandos, the egg salad sandwiches famously sold in convenience stores throughout Japan. Mayonnaise might also be found in salad dressings, used as a dipping sauce, and served with fried chicken or non-traditional sushi rolls.
In 2017, Kewpie even opened two pop-up cafes in Tokyo and Nagoya to serve mayo-based dishes, from omelets to custardy sweets.

TonelsonProductionsShutterstock
Americans are catching on to the wonders of Kewpie mayo. 2017 marked the launch of Kewpie’s made-in-USA mayonnaise, which garnered mixed reviews. Misconceptions surrounding MSG prompted the company to trade the seasoning for yeast extract in the American version, much to the chagrin of many fans of the original recipe.
Even before this latest ramen hack went viral, the condiment had a cult following stateside, so much so that there are Kewpie Halloween costumes. The red, white, and Kewpie-colored squeeze bottle is hard to miss, with a signature baby doll logo that was inspired by Kewpie figures of the 20th century. (Kewpie dolls originally made their debut as cartoon characters in a US comic strip in 1909.)
If you’re a fan of instant ramen, Japanese cuisine, or mayonnaise in general, keep an eye out for the Kewpie branding next time you’re stocking up on condiments. Better yet, take a trip to your nearest Japanese or pan-Asian market to make sure you’re getting the good stuff, MSG and all. But be warned: You might never settle for American mayo again.
Watch: This is how your checked luggage is stored underneath a plane

If you’ve ever checked a bag before a flight, or sent it off to be gate checked, then you may have wondered where it all goes and how every passenger’s bag manages to fit on the plane. A video from inside a cargo hold shows the careful luggage stacking that every flight requires.
In the video, an airline luggage handler fits 100 suitcases into the narrow space at the bottom of a plane. First, the handler makes his way to the very end of the luggage hold and lays down a mobile conveyor belt on the floor. Thanks to this belt, the handler doesn’t have to travel back and forth from the door to the very end of the luggage hold to carry and place the heavy luggage. Instead, a second handler located at the door pushes the luggage on the belt toward his co-worker.
As soon as they receive the checked bags, the luggage handler stores them all in an efficient way according to size. They line and stack them perfectly so the bags don’t shift during the flights. It’s a like a real-life game of Tetris.
As the luggage handler gets closer and closer to the door of the baggage hold, they move the belt with them until they don’t need it any longer. Despite the small, narrow space, the handler manages to fit every piece of luggage in the hold.
While many tend to think that luggage handlers throw our belongings around without any care for fragile items, this video shows us that the process (or at least this part of the process) is actually quite gentle and carefully done. That said, don’t start putting super fragile stuff, like musical instruments or bottles of alcohol, in your checked luggage — there’s a chance you won’t get them back in one piece.
