Woman gives out vodka shots in Miami airport after being stopped by airport security

A FLORIDA woman took pregaming to a whole new level this week. While flying out of Miami International Airport, the woman was told that she couldn’t bring her full bottle of vodka through security. So instead of throwing out the full unopened bottle, she decided to open it up and share the sauce with those around her.

Tiktok user @latinnbella posted a video of herself and other passengers passing around the bottle of alcohol before going through airport security. Check out the video below.

@latinnbellaa##fyp ##miami ##funny♬ original sound – D

In the background of the video, you can see the security staff looking amused, some laughing as the woman and other passengers pass around the alcohol bottle. A video as entertaining as this one is bound to come with some just as entertaining and humorous.

One user commented, “I can’t believe they are allowing this kind of behavior at the airport and I am even disappointed I wasn’t there to participate!”

Another used Oprah’s infamous tagline but with a twist — “YOU GET A SHOT! YOU GET A SHOT! YOU GET A SHOT!”

And another user commented, “It’s all fun and games until you realize your pilot is in the line.”

But not to worry, @latinnbella did follow up in the comments on the situation with, “Yes, we got on our flight nobody was kicked out. It was a shot; no one was drunk. The bottles were not in our carry-on back. We missed our deadline to check in our backs to cargo, so we had to bring them through the TSA.”

Regardless of getting free shots, I think we can all agree on skipping out on chugging a bottle and passing it around to everyone in the airport.

Where to travel in December for a white Christmas

We’ve been conditioned by our favorite movies to have some pretty unreasonable expectations for Christmas. A heavenly white snowfall will of course blanket the ground in the preceding days, setting the stage perfectly for the holiday itself. Then, on the 25th, we’ll look out our windows in the morning like wide-eyed children to find more snow drifting down, race downstairs to drink boozy eggnog, and fall asleep by the fire with a new Red Ryder BB gun. Unfortunately, in many parts of the country the reality is much different. Rain instead of snow. Dead, muddy grass instead of a white blanket. And an embarrassing bunny rabbit onesie instead of a BB gun. We can’t help you with the onesie, but we can make sure your Christmas is actually as white as you’d hoped. Some parts of the country are much more likely to get snow than others, and if you’re planning a family Christmas getaway, those are the places you’ll want to go. From Lake Placid to Mammoth Lakes, these are the best cities to visit for a white Christmas.

Mammoth Lakes, CaliforniaThis pretty little bridge lies in Mammoth Creek Park in the Mammoth Lakes area of California

Gloria V Moeller/Shutterstock

California weather has a reputation for being mild year-round, but Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains actually has an average December low temperature of 17 degrees. The Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort often remains open as late as mid-June thanks to the volume of snow regularly seen in the region. But you don’t have to be a skier to enjoy Mammoth around Christmastime.

Mammoth is ideal for families who love the outdoors, and would rather spend their white Christmas diving into the snow than admiring it from the window. Strap on the skates at Mammoth Ice Rink, or go snow tubing at Woolly’s Tube Park & Snow Play. There are also several public sledding and tubing hills in Mammoth Lakes to explore if you’ve brought your own equipment. With over three million acres of wilderness and public lands around Mammoth, there’s also plenty of trails  for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing — particularly in the Inyo National Forest. If you’d prefer a slightly less rugged experience, you can choose to tour the backcountry from the heated luxury of a snowcat. The Minaret Vista Apres Ski Tour brings visitors on a sunset excursion to Minaret Vista, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of the mountains with a side of chocolate-covered strawberries and a glass of wine.

Breckenridge, ColoradoThe Breckenridge Mountain with Skier

If you have a family of skiers or snowboarders, it shouldn’t take much convincing to head to Breckenridge for Christmas. Colorado is a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts, particularly skiers looking to escape the icy New England conditions for softer, more forgiving powder. There’s more to do here than the classic Colorado pastimes of skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, however.

The town of Breckenridge itself is perfect for a small-town Christmas feel with the energy and activities of a much larger destination. Downtown is full of art galleries, cafes, boutiques, and live music venues all infused with the vibes of a historic mountain town. Kids will enjoy boutique shops like Magical Scraps and Cowboys and Daisies, while you can look forward to spending your nights at the rustic Breckenridge Distillery (the world’s highest distillery) or Apres Handcrafted Libations.

To really get in the Christmas spirit, though, you can’t pass up a horse drawn sleigh ride. There are several options available, including scenic rides through the mountains with complimentary wine, and dinner sleigh rides that include a three-course meal in the backcountry combined with musical entertainment.

Cedarburg, WisconsinOld mill and bridge over the Milwaukee River in Cedarburg, Wisconsin

Robb Shaffer/Shutterstock

Snow certainly isn’t in short supply in Wisconsin in the winter. Located in one of the coldest regions of the country, Cedarburg, Wisconsin is ideal for a white Christmas getaway — and not just because of the weather.

Cedarburg’s downtown looks like the face of a winter postcard. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Cedarburg is filled with boutique shops, galleries, and restaurants occupying the 19th century buildings. The holiday season is anchored by the town’s annual A Cedarburg Christmas event, in which downtown is decorated with garland and ribbons. Among the special events hosted in town are Festive Friday Eves throughout December, when the Shops of Cedar Creek Settlement –historic shops and restaurants along the Washington Avenue Historic District — are open until 9pm, with live music, wine tasting, cider, and kid-friendly activities. There’s also a Santa’s Workshop, Mrs. Claus Raffle, Santa’s Dash Away 5k, and free trolley rides through downtown.

If you don’t mind braving the cold, there are a number of cross country ski and snowshoeing trails around Cedarburg, especially at the Riveredge Nature Center and Zeunert Park Path. There’s also ice skating at Cedar Creek Park.

North Pole, AlaskaFairbanks: The beautiful santa claus house

Kit Leong/Shutterstock

When people ask where you spent Christmas, wouldn’t it be cool to answer, “North Pole.” While it might not be the North Pole, this small town in Alaska will still elicit the desired perplexed and (hopefully) impressed expressions from your friends.

North Pole, Alaska is just 15 minutes from Fairbanks, and according to the town’s motto, “It’s Christmas every day.” The name of the town dates back to 1952, and was an attempt to lure a toy company to build a factory in the area. That never happened, but a city council member inspired by the name did open a trading post called Santa Claus House, and the Christmas aesthetic has remained and evolved there ever since. The roads are decorated year-round with candy canes and red-and-white-striped light poles, streets have names like St. Nicholas Drive and Snowman Lane, and the town is home to Christmas-themed ice sculptures in the winter months. The Santa Claus House is perhaps the biggest attraction, a huge gift shop featuring a 40-foot fiberglass statue of Santa right outside.

North Pole is a small town of just under 3,000 residents, but there’s plenty to do in the greater Fairbanks area. Rod’s Alaskan Guide Service in North Pole offers dog sledding and snowmobiling excursions, and the relaxing Chena Hot Springs are just an hour away.

Lake Placid, New YorkEntrance to Whiteface Mountain Ski Area

Wangkun Jia/Shutterstock

Lake Placid receives an average of 23 inches of snow throughout December, so your odds of a white Christmas here are pretty high. Surrounded by a peaceful forest, Lake Placid is perfect for exploring via cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, going ice skating, or simply renting a cozy cabin and enjoying the nature views. There’s also the Holiday Village Stroll, a December tradition with a tree lighting ceremony, Santa’s fire truck parade, scavenger hunt, and craft events.

As the home of the 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid still retains some of the infrastructure used during the games, now repurposed for modern use. You can go ice skating at the Olympic Skating Oval, check out freestyle ski jumping competitions at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex, go on a bobsled ride, or take the Olympic Gondola to the top of Little Whiteface mountain for views of the Adirondack High Peaks. You can also check out the Olympic Center and Museum, where the epic “Miracle on Ice” took place.

If you’d rather partake in extreme winter sports than revel in sports history, Whiteface Mountain will keep you plenty busy during your trip. At 3,430 feet, the mountain has the longest vertical drop of any east coast mountain, but there are also smaller beginner slopes for children.

Marquette, MichiganFrozen Lake Superior sunrise at Presque Isle Park, Winter in Marquette, Michigan.

John McCormick/Shutterstock

Marquette is one of the snowiest cities in the country, with an annual average of 155 inches of snowfall. Beyond the sheer volume of snow, Marquette is also home to frozen waterfalls, ice caves, snowshoe trails, and even Northern Lights views.

Sleighman’s horse-drawn sleigh rides is a magical winter experience that allows you to glide through the forest by sleigh. They offer private sleigh rides with Norwegian Fjord Horses for up to six people, or for a truly unconventional Christmas, a private sleigh party for up to 50 people including a bonfire, toboggan hill, and a warm building to enjoy a potluck dinner.

The Eben Ice Caves are also not to be missed. The caves are located on a tributary of the Rock River, where melting snow freezes as it falls off a cliff. Sunlight gives the ice a blue hue, which is truly magical as you enter the caves for the first time. If you’d rather climb the ice rather than explore underneath it, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has several ice climbing routes where you can break out your gear for some rugged ice climbing.

December is also a time for Marquette’s annual holiday celebrations. The Winter Snow Fun Holiday Parade & Annual Tree Lighting begins with floats, decorated trucks, and carolers making their way down Third Street, and ends with a tree lighting ceremony with Santa Claus. The Marquette Post Office also sends out helper elves to collect children’s letters to Santa along the parade route, and there are pony rides, hot chocolate, and Santa photos available for children too.

Quebec City, QuebecBeautiful Historic Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City

Lopolo/Shutterstock

Few things beat Christmas in Europe, with their famous Christmas markets, delectable desserts, and illuminated medieval buildings. Flying to Europe isn’t cheap, however, and the precarious global health situation can make long-haul holiday travel feel daunting. Luckily, you can experience an Old World Christmas right here in North America. Quebec City on Canada’s St. Lawrence River is defined by its stone buildings and narrow, 17th century streets, and it’s just eight hours from New York City.

Make no mistake — Quebec City in the wintertime is cold. But if you don’t mind layering up, braving the temperature is totally worth it. The truly intrepid might consider staying at the Hotel de Glace, an ice hotel just outside the city built entirely of ice. The hotel is rebuilt each year with a different theme, has dozens of rooms featuring ice carvings and neon lights, and might just be the perfect place to spend an unforgettable family Christmas.

To really dive into the city’s European vibe, check out Vieux-Quebec, the historic and picturesque old neighborhood of the city. The Petit-Champlain district in particular is known for its winding cobbled streets, and is lined with cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops selling maple syrup and ice wine. You might be just two hours from the US border, but it will truly feel like you’re celebrating Christmas in 18th century France.

If you’re craving an afternoon’s escape from the city, head an hour north to Mont-Saine-Anne for a little ski getaway. There’s also Stoneham Mountain Resort just a half-hour away, which is Canada’s largest night skiing area. And once you’ve returned from the slopes you can hit up Strøm Spa, with several heated outdoor pools overlooking the St. Lawrence River.

The three best places to go climbing in Tirana, Albania

THOUGH ALBANIA IS primarily known for breathtaking coastlines, Ottoman-era castles, and more than 170,00 communist bunkers, it’s also an unspoiled and rugged paradise for climbers making their way through the Balkans. Although the last decade has seen small efforts to bolt and develop climbing in Tirana, Albania’s capital city, this potential epicenter for climbing has gone largely unexplored.

It wasn’t until a Balkans climbing trip by World Champion Czech climber Adam Ondra that this sleeping giant finally got its day in the spotlight. Since that trip, the small community of Brar is now home to one of the hardest sport climbing routes in Europe (and the hardest route in the Balkans). Ondra set the 9b route (a 5.15b in the YDS rating system) called “The Dream” in 2018. Only one climber in the world — French professional climber Seb Bouin — has climbed the 160-foot-tall from bottom to top without falling (called “sending.”)

Since then, efforts have been made to organize funding through various international and local organizations to help fund the gear and manpower necessary to develop climbing in Tirana and beyond. But climbing is still a foreign concept to the general population, and the climbing community is still painfully under-funded and under-equipped to spearhead such a massive project. However, the region is becoming more well-known for climbing, thanks in part to the efforts of Rock Tiran climbing gym owner Elion Çikopano, who has been at the forefront of the movement to map and bolt Tirana routes.

Bovillo ReservoirWoman climbing near Tirana, Albania

Photo: Matt Garvin

The most extensive area for climbing in Tirana is Bovilla Reservoir, divided into four different climbing areas. Each has its style of climbing, type of rock, and groupings of difficulties.

Snail Wall, located just a short hike from the Bovilla Cafe, is exclusively slab climbing on sharp pockets. The area has the best view as it looks out over the entire reservoir. Ratings range from 5b-6b with about eight routes. None are too strenuous, and the access is easy. Park at the Bovilla Cafe and walk up a short path to the obvious blank face closest to the parking area.

The next area is Lakeside. This area takes the least time to access, so go there to get in a quick send if you’re tight for time. It’s next to the dam with a small parking area. You’ll need to first top out of the lower section to reach the top section, so bring up whatever gear or snacks you’ll want to have. Routes here range from 4b-6b+ with around 30 routes in total. It’s a mix of technical face and crack climbing and some slab.

A climbing wall with several of the hardest routes for climbing in Tirana

Photo: Matt Girvan

The third and fourth areas are a bit more complex to access and will take some route finding. The “Tufa Section” and “Bar Barinsh” are the first big walls you see while driving up the valley road on the way to the dam and some of the most challenging places to climb in Albania. Park below the dam in one of the small pull-outs to the left and make your way around an outcropping, following the walls up a steep scree field. Be careful of loose rock and be mindful of your footing. Weaving back and forth is better than going directly up.

The routes are mostly beautiful tufa lines that look like painted works of art on the limestone. There are around 30 routes starting at 6b and going up to 8a. Many don’t get much traffic, so expect loose rock. If overhangs, sustained pinches, and wide quasi-chimneys aren’t your thing, best to tick off routes at the other areas first.

There’s no public transportation to this area, so you will need personal transportation. It’s about an hour outside Tirana and half the drive is on a bumpy dirt road. Fortunately, there are many places to rent vehicles in Tirana, and prices vary from 20 euros to 30 euros per day (around $23 to $33) depending on the season. For a snack break, your only option is the Bovilla Cafe, but it has a sweeping vista view of the reservoir and is an ideal spot to rest your feet after tackling slabs in climbing shoes all day. There are also plenty of places for camping or parking your RV if you want to explore the area for a few days.

PetrelaAerial view of climbing areas around Petrela Castle

Photo: Matt Garvin

Did you know you can get in several hours of climbing and visit a fifth-century castle in one day? Petrela Castle, about 30 minutes south of Tirana proper, acted as a beacon station to alert the region if and when an Ottoman Empire invasion was headed its way.

Although there’s a cliff directly under the castle, it’s sadly not the climbing area. To reach the actual climbing area, follow the road up from the parking lot and around the back of the castle until it turns into a dirt road. Walk past the olive trees, goats, and probably a few tortoises until you reach a small trail on the left. Follow it to the small, overhanging climbs.

There are around 10 routes here, varying from simple 5a slabs to overhanging 6c pumpfests. But the routes are short and sweet, so you can get in several if a quick training session is all your schedule will allow. Even the longest routes have no more than six or seven bolts.

After your forearms stop working and your veins look like they’re about to burst, take your climbing gear back to the car and pause to take in a bit of Albanian history. If an espresso and a view of the surrounding valley is your cup of tea (or coffee), visit the cafe on top of the castle.

Transportation to the area is limited to just a small bus leaving from Tirana’s southern bus station. Just ask for Petrela and they’ll point you where to go. Otherwise, you’ll need a car.

BrarRock climber on a wall in Brar, Albania

Photo: Matt Girvan

Climbers serious about getting in ascents on some of the hardest routes Albania has to offer will want to head to Brar, about 30 minutes northeast of Tirana (and the closest crag to the city center). Drive toward Brar, staying on the road when it turns to dirt. Park on the right just before the tunnel. The truly impressive behemoth of a wall will be impossible to miss.

To get to the base, cross the road and climb the very steep approach to the left of the tunnel. Try to follow the path that wanders through the trees on the left to not erode the ground directly beneath the climbing areas.

Brar has the highest concentration of difficult climbs in the area. It’s not for beginners as there are only a couple grade 6 routes; the rest are 7s and above. This is also where the aforementioned “The Dream” route is. Climbers are actively mapping routes in this area, so there’s lot of potential remaining for first ascents.

Like “Tufa Section” and “Bar Barinsh,” the area is all limestone and many of the routes are sustained tufa lines or sharp pockets. Brar is not climbed as often as other areas, so be prepared to leave some skin behind. The rock is still a little crumbly and not smooth like on limestone routes that see far more climber traffic.

A climber on a multicolored rock wall

Photo: Matt Girvan

Brar is also not accessible by public transportation (Albania’s public transit system leaves a bit to be desired). But in a few years, the area should be more accessible, especially as most roads are in the process of getting paved. It’s worth the drive, however, and there’s a wonderful cafe (Bar Restorant Shkalla E Tujanit) in the valley that you’ll pass on your way to Brar. Leave time to make a stop on the way home on their back patios to soak up the canyon views (and tend to your various scrapes and scratches).

Sure, climbing in Tirana is still in development, but these three areas have more than enough to fill a climbing vacation, with everything from beginner 5a routes to a 9b, plus a good mix of rock types and styles. Need more info once you arrive? Stop by Tirana’s climbing gym, Rock Tirana, to get the scoop directly from the most local source possible — Albanian climbers themselves.

A 97 mm waist cut into a poplar wood core makes these skis both active and strong, useful on powder days as much as on icy cruisers on flat-light days. The classic camber shape keeps you blasting through turns with ease, and the double rocker gives you that extra bit of pop.

USWE POW Series backcountry touring backpackuswe POW 25 backpack on sale for cyber monday

Photo: USWE/EchosComm

With the USWE POW 25, USWE redeveloped the backcountry touring pack in one simple way. The brand took the normal large pouch (where skiers and splitboarders store their avy gear as well as water bladder, food, and other necessities) into two sections. This seems like a simple advancement, but in the immediacy of an avalanche, being able to grab your shovel and probe without unpacking that Thermos first can mean the difference between life and death. I upgraded to this pack from my beat-up old 18L touring pack this year and the difference is quite noticeable. No more frozen water line, and all that extra space means one thing — more room for sandwiches.

Holiday gifts for outdoor lovers

You know who they are: the person who is happiest climbing to the top of a mountain or speeding their way down it. The one who, when a long weekend rolls around, spends it sleeping outside. The diehard who sees a new sport, like foil surfing or squirt boating, as a new skill to master. Adventurers like this don’t want to unwrap a box of socks for the holidays (unless they’re Merino wool ski socks). From $20 to a few hundred dollars, here are the ultimate gifts for the outdoor adventurers in your life.

We hope you love the gifts for outdoor adventurers we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to make a purchase. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication. See our full Advertiser Disclosure here.

1. The Adventurist Classic and The Weekender, Adventurist Backpack Co. ($65-$85)adventurist

Photo: Adventurist Backpack Co.

We love a backpack that can get us through the day, any day, worry-free. But peruse an outdoor catalog and it’s clear that, while there are a lot of backpacks out there, few producers take the time to actually innovate. What’s more, most backpacks are so specialized that you’d need a different one for every activity you do. Adventurist Backpack Co. is different. Its Classic and Weekender packs are durable enough for a day in the wilderness and practical enough to bring to work, under the seat on a plane, or to serve as your cargo pouch on a bicycle trip to the market.

At a price point ranging from $65 (Classic) to $85 (Weekender), these are the ultimate daypacks, with a secure laptop pouch, two drink holders, a large main compartment for gear, clothes, or what have you, and added padding to keep your belongings dry and safe. Straps are made of leather and both button and strap for adjustment and security. And your purchase does good. For each backpack sold, this upstart pack-maker out of Denver, Colorado, donates 25 meals to those in need.

2. Surf Shacks Vol. 2 ($60)surfshacks

Photo: Gestalten

Sometimes a bit of inspiration is as needed as a new piece of adventure gear. Surf Shacks Vol. 2 is the follow-up to the popular 2017 coffee table book that peers into the homes of surfers around the world. Some are typical seaside cabins while others are urban dwellings, apartments, and even mountain houses that keep the spirit of surfing alive at altitude. Featured are the homes of everyday surfers, dwellings of iconic surf personalities like Geoff McFetridge and Hayden Cox, and the beach pads of many well-known people whom you probably had no idea were also surfers.

3. Patagonia Black Hole Duffelpatagonia bag

Photo: Patagonia/REI

It’s no secret that Patagonia makes top-notch apparel and gear. It’s also no secret that it isn’t cheap. Hence the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel, the best duffel on the market for outdoors expedition travel as well as general global vagabonding. This 40-liter duffel fits literally everything you could need for most trips (save for your skis or surfboard). It also looks good, and you’ll feel like a badass carrying it with you.

Plus, the environmental impact of buying well-made gear is next to nil when compared to buying something made cheaply that you will have to replace every couple years. So you’re not only getting a great deal but also helping preserve resources at the same time. The company says that a used piece of gear kept in circulation for 2.2 years reduces its footprint by 73 percent. And you’ll get a lot more than two years out of this Black Hole Duffel.

4. Danner Mountain Light GTX Hiking Bootdanner mountain light gtx hiking boot, gifts for outdoor adventure lovers

Photo: Airbnb

Danner has outdone itself with the new Mountain Light GTX hiking boot. No other boot company produces a winterized boot that’s as stylish as it is functional in adverse conditions. GORE-TEX lining and thick padding keep your feet warm while the winterized sole and specialized grip keep you upright and stable even on the iciest of sidewalks. The Mountain Light’s waterproof lining means you don’t have to worry about an accidental misstep into a pool of slush ruining an evening out. The entirety of the boot is comfortable enough to ride the gas pedal on mountain pass roads and hardy enough to be stuck into a snowshoe once you get to the trailhead. To top it off, the Mountain Light GTX is available from REI and counts toward your dividend.

5. WNDR Alpine Intention 110 skis, Vital 100 skis, and backcountry touring gear ($699)WNDR gear

Photo: WNDR

WNDR Alpine is doing its part to address one of the major environmental impact points of skiing: the skis themselves. Most are built with ample amounts of traditional plastics, but this Utah ski brand has swapped out the petroleum-based plastics for bioplastics and plant-based oils made of algae (nerd out on this video to see how these skis are made). The backcountry-centric Intention 110 ($699) is its first model, which the company claims eliminates two pounds of waste per ski from traditional production methods. Look for WNDR Alpine to continue innovation on other ski products, starting with the Vital 100 ski and backcountry touring gear.

Osmo Active Hydration is a quick and easy stocking stuffer that every outdoor athlete can benefit from. Built from electrolytes and carbs that help the body recover from physical exertion, each tub contains 40 servings. Mix in water before heading out to keep powered up while on the go, or after concluding exercise to replenish hydration and body water levels to normal amounts, allowing for quicker recovery and an easier transition to the resting period. The brand also offers hydration mixes tailored specifically to women along with portable drink powders that can be added to an athlete’s water bottle while camping, flying, or otherwise unable to access the full-size tub.

7. A subscription to the revamped Mountain Gazette ($60)mountain gazette

Photo: Mountain Gazette

Hosting long-form essays from top adventurists and being the perennial home to legendary outdoors-inclined voices like M. John Fayhee, Mountain Gazette was the premier dirtbag diary for most of four decades beginning in 1966. Committed followers in the outdoor community snapped up the monthly issues at newsstands in mountain towns across the American West. Yet though the magazine embodied the heart of adventure and never let mainstream opinion sway its voice, it also never made much money. It was free, after all. After changing ownership numerous times, the magazine shut down in 2012.

But, following its purchase by a Tahoe-based entrepreneur and adventurer earlier this year, it’s getting a revamp — in the form of a twice-annual coffee-table diary sent directly to subscribers’ doors. And readers have to pay this time around. The first issue ships before the holidays. So you’d better get on it to help keep the rag’s mantra of “When in doubt, go higher” alive and well.

8. Helinox Cot One ($299)helinox

Photo: Helinox

Casual camping shouldn’t lead to casual backaches. The Cot One from Helinox ensures it won’t by keeping you elevated and on a flat sleeping surface, no matter where you set up camp. The cot sets up and breaks down quick and easy, and it packs down for storage in your vehicle or garage without taking up space that you’d otherwise need. What separates the Cot One is that you’re getting the firm sleeping pad you’d expect from a cot, without arm braces cramming into your back. The result is an overnight experience that combines the best of cot sleeping with the smoothness of an air mattress, and you don’t even have to spend 20 minutes inflating it.

9. Selk’Bag Nomad ($249)wearable sleeping bag

Photo: Selk’bag

Imagine a night of winter camping without having to carry a sleeping bag in your backpack or strapped to the outside of it. Selk’bag, a Chilean company that has pioneered the “wearable sleeping bag” concept, just released its latest version, the Nomad. This sleeping bag is stuffed with post-consumer recycled PrimaLoft® Black Insulation made from 65 discarded plastic bottles, the first such product to be made of fully recycled material. Even the zippers are made of recycled plastic. The Nomad can be worn while trekking to the campsite in frigid conditions or put on upon arrival to keep warm inside and outside the tent. The attached balaclava keeps your face toasty with the added bonus of completing a setup that gives you the ability to walk around the campsite posing as a yeti. Bring on those scary campfire stories.

Winter travel guide to Myrtle Beach

An all-American seaside destination, Myrtle Beach maintains a long tradition of hosting the annual summer vacation for all types of travelers and their families. It’s a history as lengthy as the umbrella-studded Grand Strand, the 60 miles of beach that put this spot on the map.

What that reputation obscures, though, is that Myrtle Beach also makes for a great winter vacation. Mild temperatures, peaceful beaches, tons of entertainment options, and a jam-packed holiday festival calendar make this South Carolina destination — a quick two-hour flight from Chicago or Boston — a no-brainer for your next winter getaway. Once temperatures cool, here’s what’s in store at “The Beach.”

Holiday festival sceneMyrtle Beach: Even in winter, there’s no better place to be

Night of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens. Photo: Visit Myrtle Beach

A major new festival is transforming the holiday season in Myrtle Beach: Winter Wonderland at The Beach. The Beach is going all out for the huge inaugural event — November 26, 2021 through January 2, 2022 — holiday spirit taking over the sand for 37 straight days.

Here’s how to join in. Head to the ice skating rink just off the beach, where you can show off your skating skills (or grasp the rails and try your best!). After a few spins on the ice, lead the kids through the dazzling walk-through holiday lights experience — some of which is beach-themed, of course — and then to the nearby Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, an all-lit-up mile of holiday joy.

Beyond the glittering extravaganza of Winter Wonderland at the The Beach are Myrtle Beach’s tried-and-true festive traditions. See the lively parades that take place along the Grand Strand, from North Myrtle Beach down to Surfside Beach, where there’s a beautiful tree-lighting ceremony too. North Myrtle Beach is also home to the Great Christmas Light Show, an entire holiday-themed park — picture a two-mile drive-through light show with two million lights and 500 displays, as well as train rides and the chance to meet Santa.

More fantastic lights can be found at the Nights of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens, when one of the country’s best public gardens glows with 2,800+ hand-lit candles and thousands of fairy lights. Or take in the gorgeous colors and decorations at the Festival of Trees at Ripley’s Aquarium. Instead of flying reindeer, expect frolicking penguins.

Beaches and beyond

Photo: Visit Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach is famous for its incredible 1.2-mile oceanfront boardwalk. At this most magical time of year, the boardwalk is decorated with tons of twinkling lights, and the window displays are just about as jolly as can be. Get the family together, grab some warm mugs of cocoa, and stroll along the iconic promenade that’s served as the town’s hub since the 1930s. There are more than 80 beachfront businesses that’ll happily share their views (and snacks and souvenirs) with visitors.

While the city streets get all gussied up, the beaches stay quiet and peaceful in the cooler winter months, perfect for long walks and beach games with the family or Fido. But here’s a pro tip: To mix it up, spend an afternoon at Myrtle Beach State Park, set right on the Grand Strand. Hike along forested trails, stretch out on the white sand, and end your visit high above the Atlantic waves on the fishing pier. Sea bass and speckled trout are fair winter game, if you’ve brought your gear (and have a license)!

Good eats

Photo: Visit Myrtle Beach

It’s the time of year when diets go out the window, but whenever you’re in Myrtle Beach, that’s how it ought to be anyway. You’ll never go away hungry here — this is the “seafood capital of the South,” after all — but the holidays kick local menus up yet another notch. (And, admittedly, up another notch on the belt.)

Look for special holiday offerings, like the Feast of Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve at Hook & Barrel or the classic Thanksgiving menu — hickory-smoked ham, oven-smoked turkey, all the fixings — at The Brentwood Restaurant & Wine Bistro. Seriously large appetites might want to consider the Thanksgiving Day buffet at Chestnut Hill, going all out with dishes like grilled quail, sweet potato souffle, and seafood Florentine.

For classic Lowcountry fare like shrimp & grits, lobster tail, and fried green tomatoes all season long, scope out spots such as Sea Captain’s House, where every bite comes with excellent oceanfront views, no matter the season.

World-class entertainment and shows

Broadway at the Beach. Photo: Visit Myrtle Beach

South Carolina enjoys relatively mild winters, but if temperatures do drop enough to drive you indoors, there’s a long, long list of things to do in Myrtle Beach for you and the kids. Cozy up to the likes of Lady Gaga, Sylvester Stallone, and Dolly Parton at the Hollywood Wax Museum. Hang out with seahorses, sharks, and stingrays at Ripley’s Aquarium. Or let the kids tackle the science experiments at WonderWorks and the trampolines and bouncy obstacle courses of Big Air.

Myrtle Beach also has fantastic live entertainment throughout the year — we’re talking world-class theatre, music, and comedy. But over the holidays, things take an impressively festive turn. Not to mention, it’s easier to get tickets!

The Carolina Opry Christmas Special is set to open its 36th season, lining up talent from The Voice and America’s Got Talent.Another unmissable musical extravaganza is The South’s Grandest Christmas Show at the Alabama Theatre, which features traditional classics and other holiday favorites.Tributes to the greats line up at the Legends in Concert Christmas Show at Broadway at the Beach, with incredible singers paying homage to everyone from Aretha to Elvis.

These shows run from November through the end of January, so there’s plenty of time to catch Myrtle Beach’s holiday spirit. What are you waiting for?

Museum gift shop holiday gifts

If you have not had the chance to visit some of the world’s most admired museums this year , but want to find a unique gift for that special person in your life, check out the online shops of some of the world’s best museums. Museum gift shops cater to every taste, age, and wallet, from fun and tacky key chains to gorgeous art books and games. With the items we selected from world-renowned museum gift shops, you’re sure to create a surprise with thoughtful and unique gifts that will hit the spot for your art- and travel-deprived loved ones.

1. The Museum gift shop of Le Louvre, ParisItems from the Louvre's gift shop

Photo: Boutique des musées

The Louvre has a holiday selection in its online gift shop that includes great gift ideas for children and families. Our personal favorite is a pottery kit to reproduce one of the museum’s most-loved pieces: Hippopotamus. On display in the Egyptian Antiquities department of the Louvre, the bright blue figurine is extremely popular with both adults and children, not only because of its adorable look but also thanks to its fascinating story as a funerary statuette found in the tomb of Tutankhamen. The make-your-own blue hippo kit ($22.50) will keep kids entertained and is a great opportunity to teach them tidbits about Ancient Egypt.

For the whole family to share some much-needed fun away from screens, we recommend the museum’s best-seller: Monopoly Louvre ($56). The rules of the monopoly apply, but instead of buying houses and hotels, players purchase art pieces displayed in the Louvre. The pawns are all iconic pieces from the museum, including Venus de Milo and the aforementioned Hippopotamus.

There’s currently a 15 percent discount on all the items if you use the code XMAS21.

For those who want to enjoy a piece of the MET’s collection at home, we recommend buying a 1000-piece puzzle reproduction of the famous “The Unicorn Rests in a Garden” ($24.95) from the Unicorn Tapestries on display at the museum, or the 500-piece “Inside the Museum” ($24.95) puzzle, a fun illustration of some of the treasures to be found at the MET. (The museum’s puzzles are suitable for children of 12 and up, but note that the Unicorn puzzle is a difficult one.) For the Disney-lover in your circle, we suggest the MET’s new beautiful book “Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French Decorative Arts” ($50), which explains how European art made its way into Disney films like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and The Beauty and the Beast.. An exhibition of the same name will be on at the MET from December 10, 2021 to March 6, 2022.

The British Museum is filled with iconic pieces celebrated throughout the world for their cultural, historical, and artistic values, and the museum’s shop reflects this impressive collection. One of the flagship exhibits in the museum is the Lewis Chessmen, i.e. 82 intricate chess pieces carved into walrus ivory and whale’s teeth in Norway between 1150 and 1200 AD. Discovered in the 19th century on the island of Lewis in Scotland, they have inspired the pieces used in wizards chess in the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. For fans of mysterious archeological discoveries, Harry Potter, chess, or all three, small ($66) and medium ($315) chess sets featuring replicas of the Lewis chessmen pieces can be purchased. Single replicas ($15) of some of the iconic pieces are also available.

For adults, the museum’s best-selling items are prints from the Rijksmuseum that have been applied to real canvas to look like the real deal (crackle included) and framed beautifully. The oleographs for sale include “Girl in a white Kimono” by George Hendrik Breitner and “In the month of July” by Paul Gabriël ($90).

Another best-seller at the MoMa gift shop is the beautiful Mama Bird Nesting Doll ($195), a delicate and decorative piece handcrafted by matryoshka masters. Those who have seen Yayoi Kusama’s iconic “Pumpkin” sculpture being sadly swept into the sea in Japan earlier this summer will appreciate the super fun Yayoi Kusama Pumpkin Coin Purse ($120).
