The newest hotel in Palm Springs, Fleur Noire, is a spot everyone needs to know about

Opened last week, the Fleur Noire Hotel in Palm Springs, California has 21 uniquely designed casitas and studios surrounding a charming courtyard and pool. The walls inside and out are covered in a larger-than-life flower design creating a flower garden feel. The outdoor murals were hand-painted by artist Ouize, and Ellie Cashman designed the interior floral wallpaper.

Photo: Fleur Noire
Built in the 1940s as Burket’s Trade Winds Hotel, the historic property has been transformed into a modern mix of casitas, studios, and standard rooms. Each casita retains elements of the original design in addition to updated dining areas in most suites. We stayed in a suite complete with a living room, kitchen/dining area, and large bedroom. The room was spacious and comfy with a modern and airy feel.

Photo: Fleur Noire
Nothing is more important to a Palm Springs hotel than the pool. The Fleur Noir original swimming pool remains the centerpiece of the property. Multiple seating and lounge areas, games, and fire pits for cold nights are set throughout the property. If you book your stay after January 1, 2022, you can enjoy the speakeasy champagne and rosé bar named La Boisson, which will offer dozens of varieties of rosés as well as curated selections of wines, beers, and liquor. If you check-in before that date, bring your own bottles and store them in the fridge that is found in every room.
The starting rate for studio rooms is $185. Reservations can be made at fleurnoirhotel.com, and you can check out more beautiful pics of the property on Instagram at @fleur_noire_hotel.

Photo: Fleur Noire
The hotel is located on the north end of Palm Canyon Drive in a neighborhood that has been revitalized with new hotels, shops, and restaurants in recent years. While you are in the neighborhood you should:
Try the innovative cuisine and cocktails at Sandfish Whiskey & Sushi, which was designed by Fleur Noire Hôtel designer Chris Pardo. Get the Hamachi Kama: yellowtail collar served with ponzu, scallions & microgreens, and the signature old fashioned.
Walk down North Canyon Drive to Workshop Kitchen + Bar for modern California cuisine, a space recognized by the James Beard Foundation for “Outstanding Restaurant Design.”
Start your day at Wilma and Frieda’s, the most popular breakfast in town. Get there early and be ready for a line. The blackberry custard french toast is a standout.
The wildest pavilions on display at Expo 2020 Dubai right now

Within seconds of entering the Mobility Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, you know you’re in for a wild ride. The lights dim, a spotlight shines on a hyper-realistic sculpture of a young Bedouin girl, the sounds of a millennium of human transportation play, LEDs dance across the ceiling, and the floor begins to lift. You’ve just entered the world’s largest passenger elevator.
Mobility, opportunity, and sustainability are the main themes of Expo 2020. The ride to the Mobility Pavilion, which opens to a spectacle of displays chronicling humankind’s advancement through the ages, is a fitting introduction to an expo that’s defined by superlatives. It’s the first world’s fair to be held in the Middle East, the most sustainability-minded to date, and “the most inclusive and international World Expo in history,” says the event’s senior vice president Sconaid McGeachin.
Every country in the world was invited to participate in Expo 2020 Dubai, which will run through March 2022. One hundred ninety-two countries agreed, building innovative and eye-catching pavilions across nearly two square miles and three districts dedicated to the fair’s main themes. This is also the first time in World Expo history that every participating country contributed a signature pavilion.
From their architectural and technological achievements to the cultures they commemorate, these nine national pavilions represent the best of Expo 2020 Dubai, all in the name of mobility, opportunity, sustainability, and global togetherness.
1. United Arab Emirates
Photo: Santiago Calatrava

Photo: Santiago Calatrava
Located in the Opportunity District, the UAE pavilion by architect Santiago Calatrava resembles the wings of a falcon, the national bird, with 28 hydraulic feathers that can open and close throughout the day. At three stories, it’s the largest Expo pavilion, with six distinct zones. The “Desert of Dreams” is a highlight, chronicling Emirati history and heritage against a backdrop of dunes made from locally sourced sand, as is the “Dreaming Together” immersive film.
2. Finland
Photo: JKMM + Marc Goodwin

Photo: JKMM + We are content(s)
The Finnish pavilion in the Mobility District nods to both Nordic winters and Emirati architecture. Designed by JKMM Architects, the white tent-like structure is reminiscent of a traditional Arabic dwelling while the crisp white exterior evokes a dusting of freshly fallen snow. The simplicity of Finnish Modernism and serenity of the Finnish landscape are accented inside, with wood-slatted walls carved around a central gorge, cool granite floors, and soothing water elements.
3. Singapore
Photo: WOHA + Singapore Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai

Photo: WOHA + Singapore Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai
At a glance, the Singapore pavilion in the Sustainability District looks like it’s been overgrown with foliage. In fact, it’s architecture firm WOHA’s vision for the future of urban design, one that integrates nature and architecture using sustainable technologies. Powered entirely by solar panels and watered via a closed-loop irrigation system, the pavilion is a feat of zero-energy engineering, reflecting Singapore’s continued aim of becoming a certified green “City in Nature.”
4. Brazil
Photo: John Wallis + jpg.arq/Facebook
As the Amazon basin is continually degraded, Brazil’s pavilion in the Sustainability District serves as a reminder of its sanctity. Architects JPG.ARQ, MMBB, and Ben-Avid collaborated on the multi-sensory experience, which incorporates a reflecting pool made from reclaimed water, projections of Brazil’s many landscapes using low-power LED lights, and a symphony of sounds, misters, and aromas that transport visitors to South America’s largest nation.
5. Netherlands
Photo: V8 ARCHITECTS + Jeroen Musch

Photo: V8 ARCHITECTS + Jeroen Musch
V8 Architects, the firm behind the Dutch contribution to the Sustainability District, created an entire biotope in the Dubai desert, with a self-sustaining climate system that’s able to generate food, water, and energy. At the heart of the pavilion is a solar-fed vertical farm made of edible plants and fungi. Up to 800 liters of water are harvested from the air to irrigate the display. Other highlights include an immersive rainfall experience and aroma installation that’s scented like Dutch soil.
6. Pakistan
Photo: PakistanExpo2020/Twitter
The theme of Pakistan’s pavilion is “Hidden Treasures.” Designed by Al Jabal Engineering, the exhibition celebrates 7,000 years of history, the countless colors and resources of the natural landscape, and the future of Pakistani innovation. From interactive artworks and multi-sensory displays to the bazaar and dhabba where visitors can shop for souvenirs and sample traditional street food, the pavilion exposes Pakistan’s many wonders in a bid to promote tourism.
7. Japan

Photo: Yuko Nagayama and Associates
Architect Yuko Nagayama paid homage to both Middle Eastern aesthetics and the art of origami with this Opportunity District pavilion. Inside, a 360-degree theater brings visuals to life with mood lighting, misters, and sound effects. Elsewhere, dioramas capture Japanese culture in miniature and an infinity-mirror room prompts visitors to reflect on modern challenges. Special smartphones collect data as guests explore, culminating in a finale tailored to their interests.
8. Morocco

Photo: Oulalou + Choi /Facebook
Architecture firm OUALALOU + CHOI’s pavilion draws visitors to the Opportunity District before dropping them in a Moroccan medina. The eco-conscious, LEED-certified structure was modeled after a traditional village, with 22 rammed-earth houses stacked around a courtyard, just like a riad. In the name of sustainability, the pavilion will be repurposed as an apartment complex once the EXPO comes to an end.
9. United Kingdom
Photo: Es Devlin

Photo: Es Devlin
Artificial intelligence and space travel are the themes of the Opportunity District’s UK pavilion, whose facade pays homage to Stephen Hawking’s “Breakthrough Message” project by displaying AI-generated poems sourced from words submitted by visitors. Designer Es Devlin is behind the project. The first female UK pavilion creator, Devlin set out to honor both algorithmic advancement and the UK’s cultural diversity with her design.
8 La Condesa Airbnbs to settle into Mexico City’s coolest neighborhood

La Condesa is, along with La Roma Norte, one of the trendiest neighborhoods (colonias) in Mexico City. It’s full of hip restaurants, clubs, cafes, venues, designer boutiques, and shops located on streets and boulevards filled with fountains, trees, and tropical vegetation. Its two traditional parks, Parque Mexico and Parque España, are fantastic for people (and dog) watching. Any list of must-do things in La Condesa includes a stroll in Amsterdam Avenue, shaped as a perfect oval. The reason? It used to be the race track of a hippodrome. Mexico City Airbnbs range from basic to full-on luxurious. Here are our top Airbnbs in Condesa.

Watch: This Egyptian Youtuber’s stressful journey to get a passport might make you cry

Passport privilege is real. If you are the lucky owner of a US passport, you can visit 102 countries visa-free, but if you happen to own a “weak passport” the range of destinations you can travel to without having to apply for entry is much more limited.
Egyptian passport owners, like YouTuber Ammar from the channel Yes Theory, are only permitted to visit 14 countries without a visa. Meaning that if you want to travel the world as part of your lifestyle or your job, you’ll spend vast amounts of time and money filling out visa applications and going through stressful moments at customs.
For Ammar, being a traveler has an extra layer of complication. As an Egyptian male between the ages of 18 and 30, he is obligated to partake in the country’s military service for a maximum of 36 months. So, to avoid being conscripted, Ammar left his home country and his family behind to travel and continue his work on YouTube. When he left, he knew he couldn’t go back to Egypt for seven years (until he reached 30 years old) or he would be obliged to enter the army.
Staying away from his family and his culture for so many years took its toll on Ammar. And the instability of his living situation created a lot of anxiety. Ammar’s solution was to become a citizen of another country that has a “strong passport” that would allow him to go back home to visit his loved ones and travel the world more freely.
There is a range of countries who sell citizenships, and if you have enough cash in the bank, you can get yourself a second passport fairly easily. Ammar, with the financial and emotional support of his friends and co-workers at Yes Theory, got himself citizenship from Saint Kits and Nevis, a country composed of two Caribbean islands, whose people can travel to 83 countries visa-free. It cost him $150,000.

Each year, we gather to commemorate the miracle of the oil lasting eight days when it should have only lasted one. What better way to commemorate the festival of lights than with handcrafted Hanukkah gifts? These are some of the most stunning Hanukkah gifts to keep in mind this holiday season for adorning your Hanukkah dinner table.

The best cannabis-friendly ski towns in North America to visit this season

There are few types of destinations that can match the magic of a ski town. Every winter, ski resorts big and small turn into something near unrecognizable from the other half of the year as they’re flooded with skiers, snowboarders, and people who just want to soak up the atmosphere. Skiing or snowboarding is the main draw, but not the only. While it’s always advised to keep a clear head on the slopes, a relaxing cannabis indulgence can cap off a long day of snow sports like few other things.
Aprés ski opportunities can be found at just about every ski resort, but it takes a special set of circumstances for a good cannabis-friendly ski town. Some of the most famous located in parts of the world where recreational cannabis is legal, like Whistler, lack any nearby dispensaries. Others, like Taos in New Mexico, have yet to set up a recreational cannabis system, but have plenty of future potential. Still, anyone who is looking to sample both the mountain and some cannabis have no lack of options.
As of now, these are some of the best cannabis-friendly ski resorts in North America.
Editor’s note: While some dispensaries are called out here, it’s by no means is this a complete list of every local dispensary. Check Weedmaps for full availability
Telluride, Colorado
Photo: photo-denver/Shutterstock
Widely considered among the best ski towns in North America, Telluride (and the resort town Mountain Village) has just about all that avid skiers and snowboarders could ask for. Its spot in the San Juan Mountains has nearly 150 trails and slopes that drop thousands of feet. Even non-skiers will enjoy the Telluride Mountain Village gondola, which is a free ride between Mountain Village and Telluride that reaches more than 10,500 feet elevation and offers 360-degree views. And in terms of relaxation, the state’s largest spa, a 42,000-square-foot relaxation center, can be found at Peaks Resort & Spa.
Cannabis in Telluride: Find all the cannabis you need to relax your muscles after the slopes (or even if you skipped the slopes) at two Telluride dispensaries: Alpine Wellness and Telluride Bud Company. Both have all that you need, though you will have to leave Mountain Village to get them if you’re staying at one of the resorts. Thankfully, there’s a wonderful gondola for that.
Breckenridge, Colorado
Photo: FashionStock.com/Shutterstock
Breckenridge is the heart of Summit County, which is where you’ll find lots of incredible hotels (including group-friendly Airbnbs) and five ski resorts: Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Loveland, and Keystone. Of these, Breck is where to stay if you’re looking to easily add cannabis into your trip (though if you’re closer to I-70, there are a couple of dispensaries in Frisco and Silverthorne as well). Breckenridge is home to two cross-country skiing centers with 30 miles of manicured and dedicated cross-country trails, and anyone looking for downhill action will enjoy the five peaks, 187 trails, and nearly 3,000 skiable acres.
Cannabis in Breckenridge: Head slightly north from the center of town on Airport Road to find Breckenridge Organic Therapy, Green Dragon, The Dispensary, and Organix. Green Dragon is a well-respected chain of dispensaries, and the Breckenridge location has loads of edibles, flower, drinks, and anything else you could ask for. Breckenridge Organic Therapy has daily deals and specials if you’re price conscious, though you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for at a reasonable price at any of the above options.
Heavenly Lake Tahoe, California
Photo: Sundry Photography/Shutterstock
Located right on the state line between California and Nevada, Heavenly is, well, heavenly. Ninety-seven runs — nearly equally split between beginner and advanced — on over 4,800 acres of skiable terrain speaks for itself. Not to mention all of the views that come with being up against gorgeous Lake Tahoe. Plus, it has the best access to dispensaries among the six Lake Tahoe ski resorts (both sides of the state line allow recreational cannabis, just as Heavenly spans both states). And while there’s plenty of winter activities in North Lake Tahoe, head south for a better cannabis access.
Cannabis in Heavenly, Lake Tahoe: Find three dispensaries along Lake Tahoe Boulevard right down the road from the lifts: Tahoe Wellness Center (a locally owned spot open since 2009), Tahoe Green (another locally owned dispensary with a wide selection from edibles to flower to concentrates), and Embarc.
Wenatchee, Washington
Photo: Myk Crawford/Shutterstock
Stay in Wenatchee by the Cascade Mountains for nearby access to Mission Ridge. The resort is 12 miles away from Wenatchee and is known for its advanced runs, sunlight, and light, powdery snow that covers 36 runs and accessible backcountry skiing. If you’re looking for another resort on a longer stay, Wenatchee isn’t all that far from Steven’s Pass, either, where you’ll find 56 runs (including night skiing), bowls, and glades that mostly trend toward the intermediate and advanced levels. Not into the slopes? Check to see if the local hockey team, the Wenatchee Wild, are playing while you’re there.
Cannabis in Wenatchee: This small town of 34,000 people is home to more than a half-dozen dispensaries. Most are located on North Wenatchee Avenue, including The Back Porch, The Happy Crop, Craft Cannabis, and Cannabis Provisions. Other options are on the other side of the Columbia River, as well as a few on the road that leads to Steven’s Pass.
Bend, Oregon
Photo: Wirestock Creators/Shutterstock
Bend may be more known for its breweries than its cannabis — and rightly so, considering it has one of the highest breweries per capita in the country. That reputation is rivaled only by its outdoor cred, and in ski season that means Mt. Bachelor, located about 20 miles away. There’s plenty of space to spread out, as it’s the sixth largest six resort in the country with 4,300 acres of terrain, runs up to four miles long, and 101 total runs (not to mention backcountry and sidecountry options). This spot on the Cascade Mountain range centers around a 9,000-feet-high volcano that averages more than 460 feet of snow per year.
Cannabis in Bend: While you’re out of luck if you’re looking for cannabis right next to Mt. Bachelor, there’s no lack of dispensaries in Bend itself. Walk just about anywhere in town, particularly along Bend Parkway and 3rd Street, and you’ll find a range of dispensaries offering every type of cannabis under the sun.
Fernie, BC, Canada
Photo: christopher babcock/Shutterstock
What Fernie lacks in easy accessibility, it makes up for in quality skiing. The Fernie Alpine Resort. More than 140 runs spread across 2,500-plus acres of skiable terrain are complimented by five alpine bowls. It’s beginner and expert friendly, so you’ll have somewhere to go no matter your level (including the biggest vertical in the Rockies). And the nearby town of Fernie is the perfect home base filled with hockey (there’s a full-sized outdoor NHL rink), history, and, of course, cannabis.
Cannabis in Fernie: Cruise 7th Avenue and you’ll quickly come across three dispensaries: Earth’s Own, Stick & Stone, and Summit Cannabis Co.
