You Can Zoom Through the Forest on an Open-Air Alpine Coaster

If you’ve ridden a roller coaster at a theme park, make time this summer to try a different type of coaster: an alpine coaster. And if you’re anywhere near North Carolina, you might as well try the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster, which twists and turns for more than half a mile through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

@matadornetwork The #WildernessRunAlpineCoaster is a thrilling outdoor ride in #BannerElk! This is one major adrenaline-rush of a coaster ⛰🎢 📍Banner Elk, North Carolina @visitnc #travel #hiddengems #visitnc #sponsored ♬ All I Want Is You – Disco Lines

A post shared by Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster & Adventure Course (@wildernessrunalpinecoaster)

The Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster is in Banner Elk, near the border with Tennessee. It’s about an hour east of Johnson City, TN, or 90 minutes north of Asheville, NC.

Pricing is fairly reasonable, at $16 for an adult ride or $35 for a three-ride package. Kids are even more affordable at $13 for kids aged 6-13 and $5 for kids five and under.

You can’t buy tickets in advance, but you do need to reserve your time slot, which is kind of the same thing. On the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster website, you’ll need to select a day and time you plan to arrive. Think of it as a virtual line. When you arrive, you’ll need to check in during your assigned time, at which point you’ll pay for your tickets. Ideally, you’d do this a day or two in advance of when you want to visit, but they do take walk-ins when they’re not sold out.

The Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster is open every day of the year, though it closes if there’s any lightening nearby. Just remember that it can get a bit cold when you’re moving fast during the winter (and the coaster goes up to 27 miles per hour) so bring a windbreaker or warmer jacket for the way down. The carts have rain guards to keep you dry in poor weather.

What is an alpine coaster?couple on an alpine coaster

An alpine coaster is a type of roller coaster usually built in mountainous or hilly regions; many ski resorts have them available for guest use in the summer. They’re toboggan-style coaster that runs on a track, and riders control their speed using a hand brake. Alpine coasters like the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster usually have twists and turns in the track, and riders often experience a feeling of weightlessness as they navigate the course — especially since they’re not at all enclosed. You’ll ride them in a seated position like sitting on a sled, and most accommodate one or two people at a time.

It’s difficult to know the exact date when the first alpine coaster was built, as the concept of a “toboggan-style” roller coaster has likely been around for many years. However, the modern version of the alpine coaster, which features a steel track and a braking system that allows riders to control their speed, was developed in the late 1970s by a Swiss company called Franz Schilter. The first alpine coaster built by Schilter was called the “Sommerrodelbahn,” and it was installed at the Toggenburg ski resort in Switzerland in 1979. Since then, alpine coasters have been built in many other locations around the world.

Iguazu Falls Is One of the Largest Waterfalls in the World, With 275 Separate Falls

Located on the border between Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Falls is one of the most incredible natural wonders in South America. With its thundering cascades, lush rainforest setting, and breathtaking views, it’s no wonder why these waterfalls have been attracting tourists from all over the world for centuries.

@matadornetwork #IguazuFalls is on the border of #Argentina and #Brazil 🎥 @Chasing themost beautiful sce #waterfalltok #dontgochasingwaterfalls ♬ rufus du sol innerbloom – flwhney

Iguazu Falls has been attracting visitors since pre-Colombian times when indigenous people first settled in the area. The name “Iguazu” comes from the local Guarani language, which translates to “great waters”—a fitting description for this awe-inspiring site. In addition to its natural beauty, Iguazu is also known for its fascinating history; during World War II, it served as a refuge for hundreds of European Jews fleeing Nazi Germany who sought asylum in Argentina and Brazil.

The falls are divided into two sections – Argentine and Brazilian – each offering unique views of the falls. Both sides offer access to trails, observation decks, and boat tours that will take you up close to the falls. The main difference between them is that on the Argentine side, there are more opportunities for hiking and exploring while on the Brazilian side, you get a much better overall view of all 275 individual waterfalls from a single spot. Its impressive height (640 feet) and width (1.8 miles) make it one of the largest waterfalls in the world. The falls are surrounded by lush vegetation and tropical wildlife, making it a great spot for nature lovers and bird watchers alike. Visitors can explore trails that wind through the rainforest or take a boat tour to get up close to the powerful cascades.

If you’re planning on spending more than just a day exploring the falls, there are plenty of great accommodations located nearby. In Argentina, the town of Puerto Iguazú offers a variety of hotels, cabins, and hostels for every budget. You can also find great options across the border in Brazil at Foz do Iguaçu. Both towns are conveniently located near all of the major attractions in the area and offer plenty of restaurants and bars too. Many tour operators offer package deals that include transportation from your hotel or airport as well as tickets for any attractions you may choose to visit. If you’d rather go it alone, there is plenty of public transportation available from both Puerto Iguazú and Foz do Igauçu that will take you directly to most major attractions in both countries.

Sleep on a 6,800-Foot Summit at the Historic Three Fingers Lookout

The Three Fingers Lookout in Washington state is the perfect blend of camping, hiking, and unique lodging. Oh, and it’s perfect for outdoorsy people who are constantly looking for the best mountain views. The tower is open to the public for overnight stays, so you can sleep at the very top of the lookout tower.

@epic.stays Did you know that you can spend the night in a historic firehouse lookout? This is the📍Three Fingers Lookout on one of the summits of Three Fingers Mountain in Mount Baker National Forest #Washington 🎥 @Kenny Hagen #pnw #pacificnorthwest #washingtontok #cabinlife #cabinstay #uniquestay ♬ original sound – epic.stays

The Three Fingers Lookout is a former fire lookout tower in the North Cascades region of Washington state. It’s on the summit of Three Fingers Mountain, a peak in the Mountain Loop Highway area. The lookout tower was built in the 1930s by the United States Forest Service and is used to spot fires in the surrounding area. The tower is open to the public and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It’s a popular destination for hikers from late spring to mid-fall.

Why were fire towers like these built?three fingers lookout similar building historic

A fire tower similar to the Three Fingers Lookout, also near Everett, WA. Photo: Library of Congress/Public Domain

Fire lookout towers were used in the United States as early as the 1900s to help spot and prevent forest fires. The first lookout towers were built on high peaks and were often made of wood or steel. These early towers had limited visibility and were not always effective at spotting fires, so in the 1920s and 1930s, the United States Forest Service began building more advanced lookout towers with 360-degree views, such as the Three Fingers Lookout. These towers were made of concrete or stone and were typically staffed by a single person who would stay in the tower for extended periods of time to look for fires.

However, around the 1950s, fire towers fell out of favor, mostly because forest services and departments developed more advanced technologies for detecting and fighting fires. With the advent of aircraft and other technologies, it became possible to spot fires from the air and to quickly deploy resources to extinguish them. As a result, the need for lookout towers diminished, and many were decommissioned or abandoned. This particular lookout was built in 1931 and was one of about 2,000 built in the western US in the 1930s.

How to reach the Three Fingers Lookout

The Three Fingers Lookout tower is in the Boulder River Wilderness, part of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest north of Seattle. The road to the trailhead is a rough, unpaved forest service road that may not be suitable for all vehicles. The trailhead is toward the very end of Tupso Pass Road — search for “Three Fingers/Goat Flats/Saddle Lake Trail No. 641” on Google Maps.

The hike is about eight miles each way and gains about 4,000 feet of elevation, so it’s extremely challenging — especially as the final push to the summit is rocky and steep and requires scrambling and climbing a steep metal ladder to the actual tower. You’re likely to encounter snow and ice near the top almost year-round, but certainly you do it any earlier than July.

How to sleep at the lookoutthree fingers lookout and view

Photo: Alex Prizzi/Shutterstock

The lookout is available on a first-come, first-served basis, which means you’ll want to start the hike quite early. It only fits about three or four people on the floor, and perhaps another two on a newly installed sleeping platform. You’ll need to bring all your own camping gear, including sleeping bags and pads and all cooking supplies; all you get from the tower is shelter (and stunning views).

As of time of writing, you don’t need a permit to backpack along the trail. But regulations change frequently, and it’s your responsibility to stay. up to date with the local Forest Service office on trail permits, fire regulations, overnight camping limitations, and more. If the tower is occupied when you arrive, you can double back about two miles and camp near Goat Flats.

To See the Best of Sint Maarten, You Need To Indulge in the Island’s Street Food

Sint Maarten has a special culture among Caribbean nations. The island is split between two European countries: On one side of the island the Dutch, and the French on the other. But on this 37-square-mile island, there are more than 120 nationalities, and each has had a hand in creating Sint Maarten’s present-day culture. The best way to experience that culture, in my opinion, is through food.

The first people to live on the island were the Taino-Arawak and Carib. In the mid 1600s, France and the Netherlands signed an agreement to split the island’s natural resources and to use it as a strategic outpost between Europe and North America. British plantation owners then migrated to the island, and English become the dominant language in many circles. At the same time, enslaved Africans worked sugar plantations and salt flats until France and the Netherlands abolished slavery in the mid-19th century, leading to the island’s African influence.

While St. Maarten was part of the Netherlands Antilles between 1954 and 2010, people of Aruban, Curacaolean, Anguillian, Saban, and Statian descent settled on the island. Similarly, on the French side, known as Saint Martin, ethnic groups from Guadeloupe, Martinique, and France arrived. The island’s economy, which was once focused on salt and agriculture, shifted to tourism in the 1970s, leading to a diverse influx of migrants from India, neighboring Caribbean islands, French colonies in Southeast Asia, Dutch holdings like Indonesia, and large communities of people of Dominican, Guyanese, Haitian and Jamaican descent. Now, St. Maarten/St. Martin is a true melting pot that manifests itself in a delicious cuisine with many influences. And while there are plenty of fine dining restaurants worthy of a visit, the street food served in roadside spots known as lolos is just as incredible.

Sint Maarten lolos serving delicious street foodCindy’s Roti ShackCaribbean food, Cindy's Roti

Photo: Olivia Harden

One of the most popular lolos in the country serves Indian food by way of Trinidad and Tobago. An hour and a half flight from Sint Maarten, nearly 40 percent of Trinidad and Tobago’s population is of Indian descent. Cindy, a Trinidadian who has lived in Sint Maarten for several years, serves delicious doubles and roti that have evolved with a Caribbean stamp on them.

Doubles consist of two fried flatbreads (bara) filled with curried chickpeas (chana) and various toppings, like chutneys, cucumber, and tamarind sauce, making the snack entirely vegan. Cindy has to work diligently in her little yellow trailer on the side of the road. Locals love her doubles so much that they will stand in line bright and early because it’s inevitable she will sell out, which is unsurprising once you take a bite. She asked if we wanted our food spicy or mild, and since I’ve been expanding my spice tolerance, I went for the spicy, and boy I am glad I did. The taste of Cindy’s doubles is complex — savory curry, sweet chutney, spicy sauce, and plush flatbread are a total party in your mouth.

The roti is made from flour, water, and oil, which Cindy cooks on a grill and uses to wrap curried chicken and more spicy sauce inside. The roti was enormous, and even though I split half with another member of the trip, I had a hard time finishing it, which was a shame since it was so tasty.

Sexy BeefCaribbean food, sexy beef restaurant

Photo: Olivia Harden

Sexy Beef, another beloved lolo, comes from the owner’s nickname for his girlfriend. Still, the name lives up to its expectations. The restaurant serves mouthwatering international cuisine with a creole flair and is known around the island for the satay. Satay is traditionally a dish of marinated, skewered. and grilled meat served with a spicy peanut sauce. It’s popular in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. My plate came with mini skewers of chicken, pork, and beef, as well as a shrimp skewer covered in a spicy sauce — plus a side of rice and peas, steamed vegetables, and plantains. The sauces on the side, including the peanut sauce, took this already mouthwatering local favorite to the next level.

Caribbean food, sexy beef food

Photo: Olivia Harden

Sexy Beef is also one of the only lolos with a full bar. I ordered a margarita with curacao, which came blended and was very tasty. But when the owner asked if I wanted to try a “penetration shot” made with more than a dozen different liquors, I decided to go for it. If you’re looking for a place to hang out and party with the locals on the weekend, the restaurant gets lively.

Sale N PepeCaribbean food, Sale Pepe restaurant

Photo: Olivia Harden

Italian food is probably the last thing on your mind when visiting the Caribbean. But Sale N Pepe, a brick-and-mortar Sicilian restaurant, is a must-visit. The story of Sale N Pepe is one of romance. Chef Davide Zagami came to Sint Maarten as a private chef in 2000. In 2002 he met his soulmate, and they got married in 2009. The two lovers eventually opened their restaurant in Simpson Bay, intending to create the kind of restaurant he knows back in Sicily. His desire for a restaurant on the water is the perfect romantic backdrop while you sit on the patio. And in 2019, the restaurant was named the best Italian restaurant by the leading Caribbean newspaper The Daily Herald.

Caribbean food, sale e pepe salmon

Photo: Olivia Harden

Sicilian pasta and fresh seafood are the staples of this restaurant. The menu can be overwhelming with how many things there are to choose from. I loved the grilled octopus, and for my entree, I ordered the Salmone Napoleone, which is salmon served in a lemon white wine sauce and a side of spaghetti aglio e olio. The meal was very light compared to other dishes I had while visiting and was very tasty.

Captain’s Rib ShackCaribbean food, Captain's Rib Shack restaurant

Photo: Olivia Harden

After you visit Sint Maarten, I highly doubt you’ll be ready to leave paradise when it’s time to head home. But get to the airport a few hours early. Not because the lines are out the door long (the airport is tiny), but because once you get your bag is checked, you can leave the airport and make one final stop for barbecue. This Caribbean food staple means there are several places to choose from and locals have strong opinions about who makes the best barbecue on the tiny island. While I had the chance to try a few on my trip, my favorite was The Captain’s Rib Shack. This lolo is only a mile and a half from the airport, so a quick taxi ride will get you there and back before your flight with no problem.

Caribbean food, Captain's Rib Shack

Photo: Olivia Harden

I ordered the barbecue wings, which came with two sides and a small salad. I chose the rice and peas, macaroni and cheese, and I also ordered a Johnny cake. While the lolo is extremely popular, the food doesn’t take too long before it ends up on your plate. This quick detour before I left the island was my favorite meal of the trip. The wings were perfectly cooked and smokey, and the barbecue sauce was excellent. The macaroni and cheese was a standout, baked the way you often see in Black American culture that reminded me of home. A Johnny cake, also known as a journey cake, is a type of savory cornmeal-based flatbread. This Caribbean food was originally created as a portable and easy-to-make fare that could be taken on long journeys, and there are many different styles across the Caribbean. The Johnny cakes at The Captain’s Rib Shack were light and fluffy, making them the perfect way to end my visit.

7 Parks in Barcelona You Don’t Want To Miss on Your 2023 Spain Trip

Barcelona, Spain, is known for quite a lot of selling points. The city’s architecture is some of the most famous and unique in the world, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that it has a nearly perfect year-round Mediterranean climate — which lends itself to fantastic food and wine. And Barcelona’s famous streets and plazas are some of the liveliest in Europe.

So when you’re in the city, why not take advantage of that fantastic weather by visiting some of the best parks in Barcelona and the surrounding area? There are fantastic parks in Barcelona accessible by the city’s Metro system and plenty of lovely natural areas just a quick train ride away from the city. These are the seven best parks, outdoor spaces, and natural reserves you need to visit in Barcelona, Spain.

The best parks in Barcelona

Most of the parks in Barcelona fit the mold of what most Americans would consider a park: large green spaces with plenty of areas for picnicking, walking, or just enjoying the nice weather.

However, Montserrat Natural Park is more like what in the US would be considered a national park, and some of the largest parks below (like Parc Montjuïc) have attractions within them that require paid tickets. Use the recommendations below as a jumping-off point for planning your Barcelona trip, but remember to check the park websites in advance for details on tickets, opening hours, and more.

If you see an article talking about the best parks in Barcelona that doesn’t mention Parc Güell, know that the list cannot be trusted. Parc Güell is one of the most beautiful parks in all of Europe thanks not just to a prime location overlooking the Mediterranean, but because so many of the park’s buildings, structures, walkways, and bridges were designed by the most famous architect in all of Spain: Antoni Gaudí.

The park is on the city’s Carmel Hill with breathtaking views of Barcelona, and while it’s a steep walk to reach the park, there are a few escalators in the toughest sections.

There’s so much to do in the park that you’ll want to plan at least a half day there. Aside from walking through the fabulous grounds — don’t miss the famous Gaudí dragons or the blue-and-white towers near the entrance gate — you’ll probably want to visit a few other attractions, too. Aside from the 10 Euro fee to enter the park or 22 Euro fee for a guided tour (which you should buy in advance online), you’ll have to pay extra to enter the Gaudí House Museum; it’s extremely worth it.

Parc de la CiutadellaParc-de-la-Ciutadella, one of the most famous parks in Barcelona

Photo: Sopotnicki/Shutterstock

The Parc de la Ciutadella is one of Barcelona’s most beloved parks. Geographically in the heart of the city, its 19th-century gardens and sculptures provide a serene setting for locals and tourists alike to enjoy its diverse flora and fauna. This lovely park makes it easy to take a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of city life, with its wide range of attractions that appeal to all ages. The 70-acre outdoor space has several gardens, including a tropical greenhouse, and don’t miss out on the occasional concerts in the “Hivernacle” (the winter garden).

The park is dominated by the Art Nouveau-style Castell dels Tres Dragons, built for the 1888 World’s Fair. There’s also a modern art museum inside the Parliament building. The park is huge and lush, and it’s unusual to walk by on a summer afternoon and not see locals and tourists alike relaxing in the sun or having picnics on the large lawns. The park is totally free to visit, but attractions like boat rides on the lake and the art museum have a separate charge.

Parc del Laberint d’HortaA hedge maze in one of the best parks in Barcelona from above

Photo: VaLife/Shutterstock

Parc del Laberint d’Horta is one of the city’s most celebrated attractions in the Horta-Guinardó district of Barcelona. Originally built in 1791 as an Italian-style garden, it’s now an impressive outdoor space filled with lush greenery, exotic plants and trees, and two towering ancient sculptures.

The highlight of the 42-acre park is the giant Labyrinth of Loners, a large hedge maze where a large statue of Eros greets visitors who find their way to the center. Other interesting features that make this one of the best parks in Barcelona include a romantic fountain surrounded by four columns, an artificial lake with swans and ducks, and several gorgeous gardens ranging from French landscaping to Japanese stone gardens.

Parc del Laberint d’Horta isn’t free, but it’s hardly expensive. It’s only about 2.5 Euro (about $3 US) for adults, and you don’t need to make reservations in advance. It also hosts free admission days fairly often, which you can find listed on the park website. The closest Barcelona Metro stop is Mundet, on the L3 line.

Parc de Montjuïcpano view of one of the biggest parks in barcelona with a castle and big botanical garden

Photo: sizsus art/Shutterstock

Parc de Montjuïc is a wonderful urban park located on the Montjuïc hill in the city of Barcelona. It offers stunning views of the city and surrounding landscapes and is known for its huge array of attractions and things to see — the botanical garden alone has 5,000 species of plants from around the world, plus orchid gardens and a butterfly house.

Also in Parc de Montjuïc is an open-air theater that hosts performances throughout the year, including musicals, operas, and dance. The theater features a terrace with incredible views of the city and seats up to 1,000 visitors per performance. There are a variety of shows throughout the season, and every evening features an impressive lighting display on the castle’s walls.

And speaking of castles: this park in Barcelona is named for Montjuïc castle, a military fort dating to 1640. Also nearby is the famous modern art pavilion by celebrity architect Mies van der Rohe, designed for the 1888 World’s Fair. Also make time to check out the Catalan Museum of Archaeology, with exhibits dating to prehistoric times, and the Magic Fountain and Olympic Stadium.

As you may be able to guess, Parc de Montjuïc is huge — be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Parc de la BarcelonetaBeach parks in barcelona on a sunny day

Photo: Kert/Shutterstock

If you want to hit the beach while in the city (which you should, if you visit outside of winter), head to Parc de la Barceloneta. It’s one of the best parks in Barcelona for easy access (you can walk there from the famous La Rambla. The park is 37 acres and is your standard warm-weather beach park. It has jogging and running baths, beach volleyball courts, and green space for picnics or enjoying a morning coffee.

However, as you may guess, the main draw is Barceloneta Beach. The roomy beach has a protected swimming area, changing rooms, showers, restrooms, lifeguards, and even Wi-Fi. You can also rent beach chairs and umbrellas. Just behind the beach, you’ll find all manner of food vendors, ranging from ice cream to coffee. And just across the street are great restaurants, like Restaurant Salamanca (delicious seafood), Ca La Nuri Restaurant (Mediterranean), and Taverna Ibèria Barceloneta (tapas).

Fortunately, you can also walk to other beaches from here like Playa Mar or Somorrostro Beach, in case the first one you get to feels too crowded.

Montserrat Natural Parkmonserrat near Barcelona - one of the best parks in barcelona for hiking

Photo: A_Mikhail/Shutterstock

Montserrat Natural Park is a stunning area about an hour outside the city. It’s easy to reach via public transportation, or you can hire a car in the city. The park is most known for the famous Benedictine Monastery, but the entire protected area covers 13,950 acres, encompassing the entire Montserrat Mountain range. Most tours from the city include a visit to the Monastery (accessed via cable car) plus one or two area wine tastings. However, there’s no fee to visit the Monastery or the reserve in general (however, the cable car is 8 Euro).

However, Montserrat Nature Park is one of the best parks in Barcelona to visit when you feel like stretching your legs, as the park’s Sant Jeroni hike leads to the highest point in the entire mountain range. The hike is a 5.8-mile loop that gains just under 2,000 feet of elevation, so it’s fairly steep. If that feels too aggressive, consider instead the Cruz Sant Miquel hike (1.4 miles, 675 foot gain), and if it feels too easy, choose the steeper Aeri de Montserrat trail (4.2 miles, 2,200 foot gain).

If you have any interest at all in art, be sure to go inside the Montserrat Monastery Museum, which has works by the most famous artist in the world, such as El Greco, Salvador Dalí, and Claude Monet.

Parc del ClotParc de clot, spain

Photo: SerRG/Shutterstock

Parc del Clot is one of the more modern parks in Barcelona. The park is just under 10 acres in size and was built on the remains of an old workshop facility, giving it more 19th and 20th-century vibes. Within it is an old aqueduct and an old artillery tower (El Turó de la Rovira), which has great views over the city (and is totally free to enter).

This park is in the Sant Martí district, not too far from the very famous La Sagrada Familia. It’s a popular spot for events, especially in the summer, when it hosts farmer’s markets and public concerts. The park also has a few well-known sculptures, such as “Rites of Spring,” and a raised walkway with good city views. The closest Metro stop is Alfons X, though it’s still a 20-minute walk uphill to reach the park.

This Luxury Resort in Cabo Is Perfect for Travelers Who Love To Be the Life of the Party

My first trip out of the country that wasn’t for school was to Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. I went with a group of friends for my birthday, and I remember clearly the fantastic food, lively locals, and amazing culture that made the trip come to life. Three years later, I got to spend another birthday in Cabos, but this time, I would check in to the ME Cabo, a hot resort that went through a massive $10 million upgrade that I have to say was worth every penny.

Cabo has beautiful beaches, but many parts have harsh waters that make them unsafe for swimmers. The ME Cabo is one of the few resort in Cabo built on the area’s one swimmable beach. And if you love to party, this resort has figured out the classiest way to do it, whether it’s for a birthday, bachelorette party, or just because. With excellent new restaurants and plenty to do, you might find yourself tempted never to leave the resort.

We hope you love the spaces and stays we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

What you getME Cabo Lobby at Sunset

Photo: ME Cabo

The ME Cabo is part of Meliá International, a brand known for its impressive luxury accommodations in destinations like Barcelona and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. One of the standout features of ME Cabo is its stunning architecture and design. The resort’s sleek and contemporary style is evident throughout the property, from the guest rooms and suites to the common areas and public spaces. Guests will appreciate the open-air concept and use of natural light that create a sense of spaciousness and relaxation.

ME Cabo view from balcony

Photo: Olivia Harden

On arrival, I was greeted with a breathtaking view of the ocean and the famous Cabo arch while taking in the ocean breeze. While checking in, we were served glasses of bubbly and greeted by our personal concierge before heading up to my one-bedroom suite. The rooms at ME Cabo are stunning, combining traditional Mexican design with luxury finishes and warm natural hues. My room had two bathrooms with rainfall showers and a massive countertop that stretched across the back, perfect for getting ready. In the living room was a lush couch and a “maxibar,” and in the other room, a comfortable bed. But the best part of the room was the huge balcony and panoramic ocean view with the arch in the distance. The only nuisance was sometimes cruise ships would pull up to visit the arch during the day, but they would usually stay for a few hours and be gone in time for me to enjoy the sunset view.

Amenities include high-speed internet, room service, a fitness center, a spa, a gorgeous pool with a DJ and swim-up bar, valet parking, and laundry services. For issues with any of those or any other needs, a concierge was available whenever we needed her to help with any questions about our stay and make any required reservations.

What to eatME Cabo Mamazzita restaurant

Photo: Olivia Harden

One of the significant changes after the renovations is that the hotel partnered with the popular Mexican restaurant group Grupo Rosa Nega to create four excellent restaurants with food that does not disappoint. Mamazzita Mexican Soul serves delicious Mexican food with a flair and is open for breakfast (my personal favorite is the chilaquiles made with chips covered in green salsa, crema, onions, cilantro, fried eggs, and a meat of choice) and dinner. Mamazzita comes alive at dinner, complete with live performances and dancers scattered throughout the restaurant to set the tone. Menu standouts include a massive chicharron served with a soft cheese and different salsas, lobster tail elote, and shrimp tacos in blue corn tortillas. Creamy guacamole is made tableside, and I could’ve ordered just that and been completely satisfied.

Funky Geisha is another popular spot for lunch and dinner, serving Thai, Chinese, and Japanese-inspired cuisine. The restaurant is located right on the sand, and I loved taking my shoes off to sit underneath its cabanas with plush seating low to the ground. The short rib tacos are a highlight, and are infused with smoky flavors and served with avocado, pickled onions, and different sauces. Guests can also enjoy classics like edamame, egg rolls, and sushi rolls. The bar also serves unique cocktails like the Funky, a rum-based drink complete with smoke.

ME Cabos shrimp tacos

The resort has also introduced the Mediterranean Tabboo Beach Club and Restaurant, a personal favorite. Whether lunch or dinner, the beach club is where the party lives. The restaurant is situated next to the resort’s massive multi-level swimming pool, which has a swim-up bar and a DJ booth over the top, surrounded by lounge chairs and cabanas. And once the DJ starts late morning, the party lives on well into the night, complete with good-looking dancers, lots of sparklers, and a fireworks show. The food at Taboo is delicious, and we enjoyed Mediterranean classics like pita bread and hummus and an arugula salad topped with cherry tomatoes and burrata.

If you are looking for a late-night hotspot, check out Confessions Skybar & Tapas. This rooftop bar uses creative mixology, beautiful views, funky music, and tasty food to create a serious vibe. I enjoyed the lobster tacos and some French fries with rosemary, along with a cocktail made with gin, lime juice, raspberry syrup and a sparkling rosé. The refreshing treat and cool vibes made for a great final night at ME Cabo.

Things to doME Cabo beach

Photo: Olivia Harden

ME Cabo by Melia is for the traveler looking for a nonstop party that keeps it classy. There’s plenty to do without ever leaving the property. Being on the only swimmable beach in Cabo means easy access to the waves. If you’re looking for adventure, the staff can help you book any boating or watersport excursions you might want to try.

ME Cabo also prioritizes the magic and culture of this region. From the moment you arrive at the resort, you’ll be greeted by murals created by local artists. I recommend heading to the south side of the resort, which feels like its own art gallery.

ME Cabo spa

Photo: Olivia Harden

One of the resort’s most relaxing activities is the Korpo Wellness Spa. This spa will take you away from the action and transport you into an inclusive wellness experience. This spa has everything you need, including a spa circuit with a steam room and jacuzzis of different temperatures. My massage was complete with an essential oil scent of my choice, and you’d think the masseuse’s hands were made of magic. The signature treatment is its CBD Detox Massage, which uses CBD oil to improve lymphatic and blood circulation and relieve tension and pain. The spa also boasts a Facial HIIT Tri-Complex that combines saffron, sophora and peptides as an anti-aging treatment. After your trip, you’ll be ready to get back to the party.
