Towers, Dress Codes, and Controversy: Everything You Need To Know Before Visiting La Sagrada Família

Arguably the most famous church in all of Spain and one the most celebrated religious buildings in the world, La Sagrada Família is not a landmark that travelers to Barcelona will want to pass on. Yes, it’s busy, and yes, you need to pay to get in, which is always a little disturbing in a church, but what you’ll find inside is much more impressive than what you’ve seen on pictures and videos. The highly praised and somewhat controversial UNESCO World Heritage church does not disappoint. But before you set off, there are a few things you’ll want to know about La Sagrada Família to make your visit a success.
Where is La Sagrada Família located? How to get to La Sagrada FamíliaWho designed La Sagrada Família and when? When will La Sagrada Família be finished? Why is La Sagrada Família so controversial? What does Sagrada Família mean in English?La Sagrada Família in numbersWhat is the best tower to visit in La Sagrada Família? What should I wear to visit La Sagrada Família? When is La Sagrada Família open to visitors? How much does it cost to visit Sagrada Família?Where to stay in Barcelona to be near Sagrada FamíliaWhere is La Sagrada Família located?

Unsurprisingly, La Sagrada Família, which takes up an entire city block and is still growing, has a whole neighborhood named after her. The Sagrada Família neighborhood is in the Eixample Dret district of Barcelona and is located a few blocks north of Avinguda Diagonal (Diagonal Avenue), the largest and main avenue in Barcelona.
How to get to La Sagrada FamíliaThe easiest way to get to the basilica is by riding the subway. Subway lines L2 and L5 (respectively colored purple and blue on metro maps) will get you to the Sagrada Família subway station, located right by the entrance (the Nativity Facade) to the basilica.
If you want to visit two of Antoni Gaudí’s most famous creations in one day, know that you can easily walk from La Sagrada Família to Park Güell. It’s about 20 minutes on foot, most of which is spent on the large Carrer De Sardenya (Sardenya Street).
Who designed La Sagrada Família and when?Construction of La Sagrada Família began in 1882 according to the plans of the initial architect of the project, Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project and changed the design of the structure entirely and dramatically. Gaudí exclusively worked on La Sagrada Família from 1914 until his death in 1926. Many architects have worked on the construction of the church since then, following Gaudí’s detailed drawings.
When will La Sagrada Família be finished?
Photo: Pelin Nathalia/Shutterstock
Slowly, but surely, construction on La Sagrada Família advances. In 2022, two towers were completed (the Tower of Mark and the Tower of Luke), and two more are expected to be finished by the end of 2023 (the Tower of Matthew and the Tower of John). The central tower of the basilica, the Tower of Jesus, is expected to be completed in 2026. This will mark the end of the construction of the basilica.
Why is La Sagrada Família so controversial?Over the years, La Sagrada Família has faced controversy:
For the first 137 years of its construction, unlike every other building in Barcelona, the basilica had no building license. A license was issued by the city in 2019 and it cost the Sagrada Família Foundation $5.2 million (4.6 million €) to obtain permission to keep the existing structure and complete the project. The completion of the basilica involves the destruction of several thousands of homes around the site and the eviction of up to 15,000 people from their houses. What does Sagrada Família mean in English? The full name of the basilica is “el Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia”, which translate as “The Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family”. While “sagrada” means “sacred”, a more natural translation in English is “Holy Family”.
La Sagrada Família in numbersThe construction of La Sagrada Família started in 1882, over 140 years ago.La Sagrada Família is expected to be completed in 2026 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Antoni Gaudí’s death. The construction of the basilica was stopped for seven months during the COVID-19 pandemic, from March to October 2020.When completed, La Sagrada Família will reach a height of 566 feet. (the Tower of Jesus will be the tallest of all 18 towers.)According to a 2019 report, about 4.5 million people visit La Sagrada Família each year. What is the best tower to visit in La Sagrada Família?Visitors to the basilica can opt to climb one of two of the basilica’s towers: the Nativity Tower or the Passion Tower. Most visitors recommend choosing the Nativity Tower, but both towers provide great views of the city. That said, no matter the tower, many visitors don’t find the experience to be worth the money.
Note that there are elevators to take people up the towers, but that you must go down on foot and the stairs are narrow, dark, and very crowded.
What should I wear to visit La Sagrada Família?Visitors to the basilica must adhere to a simple dress code:
Hats are forbidden unless they are religion or health-related head coveringsWearing shoes is compulsorySee-through clothing and swimwear are not allowedShorts and skirts must reach at least mid-thighWhen is La Sagrada Família open to visitors? From November to February: Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM; Sunday from 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM.From March and October: Monday to Saturday 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM; Sunday from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM.From April to September: Monday to Saturday 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM; Sunday from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM.December 25 and 26, and on January 1 and 6, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.How much does it cost to visit La Sagrada Família? There are four packages available for purchase for future visitors to La Sagrada Família:

Inside the Traditional Ivory Coast Dance That’s Known as “the World’s Most Impossible Dance”

The Zaouli mask dance is an ancient ritual dance that has been performed by the Guro people of Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa for centuries. It’s a complex and mesmerizing form of masked performance art that tells the story of how men and women were created. It is also a way to bring people together in celebration, healing, and connection with their cultural heritage.
@matadornetwork The Guro people of central #IvoryCoast perform a traditional dance known as the #Zaouli mask dance, which is also referred to colloquially as "the most impossible dance in the world." This traditional #Africandance is characterized by energetic moves, colorful masks, and lively music. The masks are said to bring peace, joy and protection. The Zaouli mask dance has its roots in the Mossi people from the Upper Volta region, which is now known as Burkina Faso. This ancient tribal dance is believed to be more than 200 years old, and was traditionally performed for kings and chiefs at important ceremonies like weddings or funerals. Today, it’s still part of many festivities celebrated by the Mossi people and other tribes throughout West Africa.
The Zaouli mask dance involves three main characters: Mawu (the creator), Kponhinkon (the trickster), and Goli (the jester). The masks represent these characters, as well as other mythological figures from Guro culture such as the python spirit. The performers wear elaborate costumes and body paint to further enhance the effect of their characters. As they move around the stage, they act out various scenes from Guro mythology which are accompanied by drums and singing. The audience watches in awe as the performers create an unforgettable experience for all who attend.
The centerpiece of every performance is an intricately-carved wooden mask with exaggerated features—often featuring horns or feathers—that symbolizes power and strength. Up to twelve masked dancers will circle around the mask-bearer while chanting lyrics that tell stories about local legends or historical events related to their tribe or nation. The dancers are accompanied by musicians playing drums and other traditional instruments that create a rhythm that sets the tone for each performance.
At its core, the Zaouli mask dance serves to give thanks to Mawu for creating humans and show respect for her power over life and death. It also serves as a reminder of our shared humanity, as each character represents different aspects of human nature that we can all relate to in some way or another. It also serves as a way to bridge gaps between generations within Guro society—it brings people together across age groups in celebration and understanding of their culture’s history and traditions.
A Wild Boar Got Loose on the Slopes at a Japanese Ski Resort

Skiing is an outdoor sport where you don’t expect many wildlife encounters. You might see some birds or small woodland creatures like snow hares or squirrels. Your chances of seeing larger animals like fox, deer, or moose increase if you’re skiing in the backcountry, but when it comes gliding down groomers at a resort, encountering anything other than your fellow skiers and snowboarders would come as a surprise — particularly if that encounter is with a wild boar. But that’s exactly what happened at the Alpen Blick Snow Resort in Myōkō City, Japan.
@matadornetwork Four snowboarders got an unexpected surprise when a #wildboar barged in on their fun at the Myoko Ski Resort in Japan @joeyosoko #wildboars #snowboardingtiktok #japantok #snowboarding ♬ original sound – A – ✧A✧
Earlier this month, a local boot-fitting and snow-tuning shop called Joey’s posted footage of a boar charging a group of snowboarders at the base of a ski slope. One of the snowboarders was knocked over from behind while three others fled. A second snowboarder was then rushed by the boar before it sprinted away but shielded himself with his snowboard.
Alpen Blick Snow Resort, or Ikenotaira, is a ski resort on Mount Myōkō in the Niigata Prefecture of Honshu, Japan’s main island. It’s one of Japan’s oldest ski mountains and a popular destination for deep powder skiing and snowboarding.
Wild boars are native to Honshu and commonly spotted in the mountains and forests, although they’re no strangers to Japanese cities or suburbs. The country’s boar population has seen significant growth over the past few decades, which many people attribute to the fact that hunters are becoming more scarce as Japan’s human population ages. The abundance of wild boars has resulted in more frequent encounters, attacks, and occasional fatalities. The average adult Japanese boar weighs more than 200 pounds.
What to do if you see a wild boarThe likelihood that you’ll be charged by a wild boar while skiing in Japan is slim, but there are a few things to keep in mind if you ever do encounter a wild boar in any setting. According to NParks, Singapore’s National Parks Board, these are the steps to take:
Stay calm, back away from the boar slowly, and keep a safe distanceRefrain from provoking the boar by approaching it, trying to feed it, taking photos of it, or otherwise disturbing the animalTake extra caution around adult boars with their young as they can be extra aggressive in order to protect their piglets.

The Two Cenotes You Need To See in Tulum, Mexico

Cenotes are some of the most enchanting attractions in Mexico. A unique type of geological formation found on the Yucatán Peninsula, particularly the Riviera Maya, cenotes are natural sinkholes that were formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, creating a fresh groundwater pool at the bottom. Many of them have also formed stunning underground cave systems that can be explored by swimming, snorkeling, or scuba diving.
If you’re in the mood to go chasing cenotes on your next trip to Mexico, Tulum is a good place to start. Not only is Tulum one of the most popular resorts on the Yucatán Peninsula — famous for its white-sand beaches, warm Caribbean waters, proximity to Mayan ruins, and bohemian atmosphere — but it also provides easy access to some of the area’s most incredible cenotes, including Cenote Minotauro and Cenote Xux-Hah. But if you only have time to visit one or two, consider dedicating your time to the two Tulum cenotes described below.
Must-see Tulum cenotesGran CenoteSituated roughly 20 minutes inland of Tulum’s hotel zone by car, Gran Cenote is one of the best-known cenotes in Mexico. Its underwater cave system is particularly popular among scuba divers, and its incredibly clear water helps to explain why. Swimming, snorkeling, and free diving are excellent ways to enjoy Gran Cenote, but with the assistance of a scuba tank, divers are better able to explore the submerged passageways and get an up-close look at the numerous fish species that call the natural swimming pool home. Scuba and snorkel rentals are available, but you’re going to want to get there early if you plan on avoiding the crowds.
Parque de Cenotes Yax-MuulDrive 20 minutes north of Tulum along the coast and you’ll hit the Parque de Cenotes Yax-Muul, which is something of a hidden gem compared to Gran Cenote. The park is home to a network of cenotes, including namesake Yax-Muul and a second cenote called Sac Tuunich. One of the most exciting things about these cenotes is the opportunity to rappel down into them. At Parque de Cenotes Yax-Muul, you can also see a traditional Mayan blessing ceremony or arrange an ATV tour through the jungle.
A Guide To Feeling Your Best as a Plus-Size Spa Guest

There’s nothing more satisfying than a relaxing body massage or soothing facial. There’s something special about spa treatments, especially when on vacation. As a frequent traveler and spa lover, I make it a point to get pampered on every trip I go on. But as a plus-size person and part of the 70 percent of Americans considered overweight, I have different considerations to think about when booking my services.
As someone who’s been to plenty of spas around the world, I’ve developed a few tips and developed my own plus-size spa guide to help make the experience more enjoyable and inclusive.
Some consider spa treatments a luxury, something to splurge on every once in a while (if you’re lucky). But one of the theories on the origin of the word ‘spa’ is that it comes from an acronym of “salus per aquam”, the Latin phrase for ‘health from water.’ The concept of soaking in warm water first started in a Belgian village where Roman soldiers used hot mineral springs to treat aching muscles and wounds after a battle. Even today, some spas are focused solely on soaking, rather than treatments.
Similarly, I look at spa treatments as a way to relax and rejuvenate. Unfortunately, for some plus-size people, the thought of visiting a spa can be anxiety-inducing. From lived experiences, we already know that items like bathrobes and towels will be an issue. But the uncomfortable thought of disrobing for a massage or waxing service prevents many plus-size people from visiting – along with the question of if the massage table is strong enough to keep us safe and comfortable.
Before your treatment: know your worth
Photo: Savina Nataliia/Shutterstock
The first barrier is a mental one, in my opinion. Plus-size people are often stared at and ostracized in social settings, especially settings related to health or wellness and their perceived relation to thinness. Deciding to walk into these spaces and put yourself in a position to be ‘othered’ is a difficult one.
There’s also the internal dialogue that might be reaffirming negative ideals to make you think your size means you should be the last to have your needs met. I’m here to remind you that you are worthy of getting pampered, you deserve to feel beautiful, and you have the time and means to make your wellness a priority.
You don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with. While some services require wearing less clothing, you can always keep your underwear on during these treatments. If there are certain areas where you don’t want to be touched, make sure your massage therapist is aware of them before your treatment begins (as is the case with anyone getting a spa service).
Spa staff and other spa-goers need to recognize that all people, regardless of size, are worthy of rest, wellness, and relaxation in their many forms. We are all deserving of spa treatments and should all feel welcomed and accepted in spaces of health and wellness.
Scheduling your treatment: advocate for yourself
Photo: Mariia Korneeva/Shutterstock
Now that you know you’re worthy of being pampered as a plus-size spa-goer, it’s time to make your appointment. The most effective way to do this is by calling the spa, rather than booking online. This allows you to share that you’re a potential client and a plus-size person, and you want to know if the spa can accommodate you. The first question I ask is about robe sizes. I ask what the largest robe size the spa carries is, and if I need to bring my own plus-size spa robe.
For services like massage, facials, and waxes, you’ll more than likely than not be asked to lie down on a massage table. If you think you might need a wider or larger massage table, I would mention this during your call.
Spas should know that one size never fits all. Plus-size and tall clients will need larger and longer robes, so it’s worth investing in an assortment of sizes if you’re a spa owner. Spas should also invest in adjustable massage tables with higher weight capacities. I’ve even had a massage therapist adjust their table to add more width for my arms and shoulders, which made my experience infinitely more enjoyable.
During your treatment: take up space
Photo: DedMityay/Shutterstock
Appointment day is the day you’ve been waiting for. If you already talked to the spa and did what you could to advocate for your comfort, now, all you have to do is show up. You’ve done this for yourself, so try not to compare yourself or your body with any one else there. It may help to remember that most people are working towards body acceptance.
Remember that you deserve to be there. You paid for your spot, so take up space – take all the space you need. Being at the spa is your “you” time, so don’t try to shrink yourself or squeeze yourself into anything for anyone. Just let it all hang out today.
Other spa-goers should avoid staring, pointing, commenting on plus-size patrons’ bodies, or mentioning anything about their “bravery.” This might sound like a joke, but I’ve experienced all of the above. There’s nothing brave about a plus-size person living their life and statements like that are not a compliment. They only highlight the weight stigma, micro-aggressions, and fat-phobia we experience by simply existing.
After your treatment

Now that the spa experience is over, consider how you feel and think about whether you’d do it again. The nervous part may be over, but there’s still work you can do. By sharing your experience with the spa (and sometimes with the public, via reviews and such), you’re helping to advocate for other potential plus-size clients this spa might have.
If the spa sends you a survey or requests a review, complete it and mention that you are plus-size. This will help other plus-size people identify your feedback. If you had to bring a plus-size spa robe or brought other tools that were helpful to your treatment, mention that too. These are small investments that spas should make to be more inclusive.
Useful tricks for a great plus-size spa experienceOver the years, I’ve learned a few tricks to help make the spa experience more accessible. The easiest spa hack I have is for plus-size spa-goers getting pedicures. If you have issues with mobility or just thick thighs, bring a yoga block with you when you go in for your next pedicure. Your nail tech can prop your pretty little feet up on that for most of the process, which will help relieve any strain or stress on you or your nail tech.
As for me, I’m a fat girl that prefers getting a bikini wax. Although this is a very intimate spa treatment, I’ve learned that clear communication can help make this process painless. I get involved and ask my esthetician what they need me to do. I place my hands in different locations to create tension, which helps make the process less painful.
Don’t forget to congratulate yourself on embracing self-love

You deserve to be pampered at the spa and are absolutely worth the fuss. It’s ok to make rest, healing, and wellness a priority. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your body; you deserve to feel beautiful and special – because you are.
If you are a plus-size person, you are the majority – even if it feels like society tells us that we need to change our bodies to be worthy of love, respect, a job, summer – basically, everything. You should know that you deserve it all and don’t have to change anything. The more plus-size spa goers embrace their bodies, show up, and take up space, the more that spas have to accept that diverse bodies are the norm, not the exception.

These Delicious Dumplings Are the Best Introduction To Georgian Street Food

Georgia is known for its delicious cuisine, and one of the country’s most beloved dishes are khinkali dumplings. This traditional dish is made with a variety of fillings and spices, making it an excellent option for travelers looking to try something new and get a flavorful introduction to Georgian food.

Khinkali are Georgian dumplings that feature various fillings such as beef, pork, mushrooms, potatoes or cheese. They’re usually served steamed or boiled in either broth or water. The dough is made from all-purpose flour, sometimes with some yeast added for extra flavor. Then, the filling is placed inside the dough before being formed into round shapes resembling a standing cylinder. After the shape has been completed, small pleats are formed around the edges which gives them their distinctive look.
The pleats are not just for looks; they serve an important function as well! The pleats act like little compartments that hold onto the juices and stock inside the dumpling which keeps your khinkali juicy and flavorful all throughout eating them. It also means you don’t have to worry about spilling any of that deliciousness when you take a bite.
Khinkali make an excellent side dish to any meal but can also be eaten as an appetizer or main course — depending on how many you decide to eat. They pair particularly well with soups and stews but can also be enjoyed as part of other meals. No matter how you choose to enjoy them, rest assured that these delicious dumplings will add some great flavor to your meal.
Khinkali can be found throughout Georgia in both traditional restaurants and street vendors alike. If you’re looking for a truly local culinary experience in Tbilisi (the capital city), head over to Hamazgayin Kari or Darika Cafe for some delicious khinkalis served up fresh from their kitchen. For those who want something more casual, street vendors all over Tbilisi serve up piping hot khinkalis that won’t disappoint.
This Luxury Resort Is Los Cabos’ Finest Wellness All-Inclusive

In my day-to-day life, I have a hard time making my health and wellness a priority. I know self-care is important, but responsibilities often get in the way. Thankfully, I was able to spend time at the luxury all-inclusive wellness resort, Paradisus Los Cabos by Melia, in Los Cabos, Mexico, and had an opportunity to reset in paradise.
Yoga at sunrise without a stressful commute? Sure.
A floating breakfast with a view of the Sea of Cortez? Absolutely.

Of course, balance is essential — even on vacation. There are plenty of ways to spoil yourself at this five-star resort. With seven restaurants, swim-up bars, room service, and unlimited amounts of ice cream available all day, treating yourself to all-inclusive gastronomy is simple. But unlike most other resorts in Los Cabos, unlimited food and beverages are not the primary draw here. The wellness facilities are outstanding, offering guests a chance to regenerate with holistic treatments and world-class therapists.
How to get to Paradisus Los Cabos
Photo: Booking.com
The resort is near the end of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. There are direct flights daily to Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) from Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles and New York City, to name a few. Finding a flight is easy and discount airlines, like Spirit, have many flights from the US.
The airport is currently under construction, so be prepared to deplane the old-fashioned way with steps until the renovation is complete. Once inside, going through customs and baggage claim is a breeze. I would recommend lining up car service through the resort. Otherwise, there is some chaos when you go to the transportation section if you do not have a ride in place.
About Paradisus Los CabosThe lobby has a glass pyramid shape, and on arrival, the openness feels grand. Once you check in with the concierge, they fit you with a bracelet that acts as your room key and grants access to the resort amenities.

There are 350 oversized guestrooms which are large and bright, with crisp white textiles and modern light gray furniture. A couch and a table make relaxing with a book inside the room something you actually want to do. Beds were incredibly comfortable with quality white linens and a couple of pillow options to choose from. The minibar is fully stocked with all-inclusive drinks, snacks, and candy. If you are like me and enjoy unpacking for a week of vacation, good news — standard rooms have plenty of space to unpack and stow the suitcase in the large closet.

The bathrooms are moderately sized and modern with everything you need. If you forgot something at home, the resort most likely has a replacement for you. There’s a rain shower overhead and a handheld option, which is very nice if you just need to rinse off your feet after walking on the beach. They also provide white, lightweight robes that are not too heavy given the warm climate.

The rooms open up to a patio or balcony overlooking the resort and some have an ocean view. The grounds are gorgeous, so even if you can’t see the sea, I don’t think you’ll complain.
The Reserve suites are a serious level up. They range in size and amenities from The Reserve Deluxe Ocean Front Suite to The Reserve Master Suite Ocean Front Swim Up. And yes; the latter means you can enjoy swim-up accommodation. Booking the more luxurious suites gives you access to the adults-only section of the resort, a butler service, an exclusive pool and restaurant, pillow menus, and stunning ocean views.

I was able to enjoy this service and was impressed by the daily check-ins on WhatsApp and assistance with reservations around the resort. And yes, I love children, but sometimes, peace and quiet with other people’s kids is an important part of wellness.

The YHI spa is just one part of health and wellness at Paradisus Los Cabos. The resort offers classes such as yoga, surfboard workouts on the beach, and pool aerobics — you might even see a conga line in the pool. There is also a kitted-out gym if you prefer to work out at your own pace.
I’m not much of a morning person, but practicing yoga with the sunrise starts the day off on the right foot. Perhaps if I lived at a five-star resort all the time, I would get to the early morning classes.
The YHI spa also has a range of amenities included with your treatment cost. The sauna is small but adequate. However, it’s the pool area that really sets the bar high. It is long and narrow and overlooks the ocean, with water treatments to enjoy while soaking.

But the spa is more than just a place to pamper yourself. It is also recognized by the internationally known non-profit, Wellness for Cancer organization. The organization has hailed the YHI spa for of its commitment to providing quality care and support for those affected by cancer. The spa offers specialized treatments such as lymphatic drainage massage and reflexology that reduce stress levels and improve overall health in cancer patients. The staff are also trained to provide compassionate care with an understanding of the unique needs of those living with the dieses.
Indulging in nature is also a cornerstone of the wellness facilities here. The resort takes part in the Welcome to Life initiative, helping sea turtles safely hatch before being released into the sea. If you are there at the right time, you can watch the baby turtles start their life.

If you miss this during your stay, look out for whales swimming by the resort. Whale sightings are common and there is a bell guests can ring if they spot one.
Spa treatments at Paradisus Los CabosA spa treatment costs extra and must be scheduled ahead of time, but I felt it was worth it.
The calming locker rooms have plenty of space to change into your robe and slippers before going into the waiting area, where you can take a cup of herbal tea.

I enjoyed a beautiful 50-minute full-body massage. One particularly nice thing about the treatment room was that, while fully private, it opened to the outside with a shower and open sky above. The sounds of the waves and birds added to my relaxation while the stress of real life was removed from my shoulders.
Besides typical spa treatments like massages and facials, the spa offers combination packages. One option is the Baja Sur, which includes exfoliation and body wrap, massage and express pedicure. They also have a combination package for couples, the Fuego, which is a massage and facial in a room for two. Manicures and pedicures are available, too. The beauty salon is another option, where you can get a fresh blowout. After a day of pampering, who wants to actually mess with drying their own hair?
To make managing your stay even easier, the resort has an app you can download when you arrive. You can make reservations for special events and book treatments.

Of course, Cabo is also known for its party scene, and a trip to Cabo San Lucas can provide nightlife options — if that is what you are looking for.
If you want to explore the outdoors, this part of Mexico offers some superb options, like a boat ride around the iconic Land’s End and various waterfall hikes.
You can enjoy this region of Mexico without the worry of your trip being ruined by rain. This desert climate means it’s almost guaranteed you’ll have sunny days for your entire trip.
