Glass Floors and Amazing Views: Everything You Need To Know Before Visiting Tower Bridge

London is a museum nerd’s version of heaven, but you can’t possibly spend all the time you have in the English capital indoors. Take a break from the British Museum and get outside among the crowds of Londoners going about their day. One way to both mix with the locals and sightsee all at once is to head over to Tower Bridge, one of most iconic landmarks in the city, alongside Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the royal residence, Buckingham Palace. And much like other London landmarks Tower Bridge is worth knowing better before you go and check it out a little closer.

Where is Tower bridge located? How do you get to Tower bridge?Who designed and built Tower Bridge and when? What kind of bridge is Tower Bridge? What materials were used to build Tower Bridge? Are Tower Bridge and London Bridge the same?Tower Bridge in numbersCan you cross Tower Bridge on foot? Can you go inside Tower Bridge? When is Tower Bridge open to visitors? How much does it cost to visit Tower bridge?Where to stay in London to be near Tower bridgeWhere is Tower Bridge located?Aerial view of Tower Bridge in London

Photo: r.classen/Shutterstock

Tower Bridge spans the river Thames to link two London boroughs: Tower Hamlets (north bank of the river) and Southwark (south bank of the river). On the north bank of the Thames, Tower Bridge is next door to The Tower of London, another London must-see. The visitors’ entrance to the bridge is located on the north bank of the Thames.

How to get to Tower Bridge

The easiest way to get to Tower Bridge is by taking the subway (AKA “the tube”). On the north bank of the Thames, the Circle and District Lines (depicted in yellow and green on subway maps) will get you straight to the station Tower Hill that is a nine-minute walk to the visitors’ entrance of the bridge.

On the south bank of the Thames, the Jubilee Line (depicted in grey on subway maps) will get you to the London Bridge station. From there, you can connect with a thames clipper boat that will take you across the river to the visitors’ entrance of the bridge. Alternatively, you can take a 20-minute walk from the London Bridge station to Tower Bridge and cross the bridge on foot to arrive get to the visitors’ entrance that is located on the north bank of the Thames.

Who designed and built Tower Bridge and when?

Tower bridge was designed by renowned English architect Sir Horace Jones, and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry in 1884. Construction started in 1886 and the project was completed in 1894. The construction of the bridge was meant to help Londoners go from one side of the city to the other more easily without interfering with the traffic on the river Thames.

What kind of bridge is Tower Bridge?Tower bridge lifting

Photo: prochasson frederic/Shutterstock

Tower Bridge is a combined suspension and bascule bridge.

The deck of the bridge is suspended by cables attached to high towers, making it a suspension bridge.

The fact that the deck is made of two separate leaves (AKA bascules) that lift vertically and let the river traffic pass when needed makes it a bascule bridge.

What materials were used to build Tower Bridge?

Tower Bridge is made of steel, Cornish granite, and Portland stone.

Are Tower Bridge and London Bridge the same?

Tower Bridge and London Bridge are not the same, but they are located next to each other on the river Thames. The current iteration of London Bridge opened in 1973 and links the City of London (a borough on the north bank) to Southwark (a borough on the south bank). On foot, London Bridge is a 15-minute walk from Tower Bridge.

Tower Bridge in numbersTower Bridge is 200-foot tall, 800-foot long, and 250-foot wide.Building Tower Bridge required the labour of 432 construction workers every day for eight years, from April 22, 1886 to June 30, 1894.Around 40,000 people use Tower Bridge every day.On December 30, 1952, the driver of bus 78 jumped the bridge while the leaves (AKA bascules) of the deck were lifting up to allow river traffic to pass. The bridge’s two high-level walkaways were closed to the public from 1910 to 1982.Tower Bridge lifts twice a day, i.e. about 800 times a year. Can you cross Tower Bridge on foot?

You can walk across the bridge for free using the pedestrian walkways on each side. It takes about five minutes to cross the bridge on foot.

Can you go inside Tower Bridge?Inside the higher-level walkaways at Tower bridge in London

Photo: cowardlion/Shutterstock

Purchase a ticket and you’ll get to go in the two towers, walk the high-level walkaways that link both towers (part of the walkways are made of glass so you can see the traffic and the river 138 feet below), and visit the historic engine rooms that used to power the bascules of the bridge.

While there are stairs to go up the towers and to go inside the engine rooms, there are also elevators for people with limited mobility.

When is Tower Bridge open to visitors?

The bridge is open all day, every day, for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. For those who want to go inside, Tower Bridge is open daily from 9:30 AM to 6 PM.

How much does it cost to visit Tower bridge?

To visit the inside of the bridge, adults pay $13.90 (£11.40); children between the ages of five and 15 pay $6.95 (£5.70); children under the age of five enter for free; local residents pay $1.20 (£1). Other discounts may apply; please check the website to see if you can benefit from them.

It is highly recommended that you purchase your ticket online in advance on Tower Bridge’s official website.

This Cave Hotel Is the Most Unique Way To Experience Turkey’s Ancient Landscape

Sleeping in a cave might not exactly sound luxurious (or at all enticing) — until you see the Divan Cave House. Located in the ancient city of Göreme in Cappadocia, Turkey, the cave house is a remarkable blend of luxury and ruggedness, hearkening back thousands of years and giving you a glimpse into ancient Turkish culture.

We hope you love the Divan Cave House! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

The Divan Cave House is set in four restored antique caves that have been transformed into luxurious accommodations with modern amenities. Each cave is designed to offer guests the comfort of modern living while still embracing the rustic charm of the area’s traditional architecture. Guests can choose from two single-room or two double-room caves that offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. All rooms come complete with air conditioning, heating, WiFi access, and satellite TV.

In addition to offering comfortable accommodations, Divan Cave House also provides guests with a variety of other services and facilities. The on-site restaurant serves up delicious local cuisine prepared by experienced chefs. There is also an outdoor terrace where guests can soak up some sun or enjoy a romantic dinner under the stars. Other facilities include an outdoor swimming pool and hammam (Turkish bath). The property also offers shuttle service to nearby attractions such as Uchisar Castle and Fairy Chimneys National Park.

At the center of Cappadocia is Göreme National Park and the Göreme Open Air Museum — both easily accessible from the hotel. The park houses many incredible rock formations known as “fairy chimneys,” which are formed when erosion caused by wind and water exposes softer layers of rock beneath harder ones. These fairy chimneys can be up to 131 feet high and are best seen from hot air balloon rides in the mornings when they are illuminated by the sun’s rays. Once you’re done admiring these majestic formations from above, explore them further on foot and visit ancient cave churches with frescoes dating back to 700 A.D.

9 Gorgeous Airbnbs for Your Tulum Bachelorette Party

Tulum is probably the best location in Mexico for a bachelorette party for discerning brides. While some brides-to-be may appreciate the appeal of sitting at an all-inclusive resort in tourist hot spots like Cancun or Cabo San Lucas, surrounded by other Americans drinking bottomless piña coladas, brides with more refined tastes will instead want to consider a Tulum bachelorette party.

Tulum offers easy access to cenotes and cultural sites, affordable and homemade Mexican food, and is a perfect basecamp for exploring the Yucatán, especially since it’s easy to take cruiser bikes to the beach or nearby Tulum National Park. And if you book an Airbnb closer to Tulum Beach, you’ll be close to the hotel and restaurant strip, where you’ll find high-end restaurants, beachside yoga studios, and stylish beach clubs where the DJs start spinning at 11 am. Of course, Tulum also has a fantastic collection of street art and sculptures, boutique and artisan stores, and jungle cafes where you can start your morning off with an açaí bowl while swinging in a hammock under a palm tree.

If you want to inject a bit of style, culture, and adventure into your pre-nuptial celebration, consider any of the nine Airbnbs below for your epic Tulum bachelorette party. Properties are listed in order of price, so scroll to the bottom if you have a bigger group.

Bedrooms: 1+Sleeps: 2+Rates from: $150 (or $75 per person)

If you have a small group of people or don’t want to be responsible for booking everyone’s lodging, consider booking a few Airbnbs in the same complex. And if you want a peaceful, more bohemian-style Tulum bachelorette party, Playa Esperanza is a great choice. It’s an eco-friendly beach club and hotel on the beach just a few steps from Mayan ruins within Tulum National Park.

Most rooms are built with natural materials and have a traditional open-air design, ensuring you can feel the ocean breeze year-round (though there are mosquito nets, of course). The eco-resort has electricity in the evenings only, since you don’t need it much during the day. There’s an on-site restaurant, swinging beach beds, bicycle rentals, an outdoor pool, a yoga space, and basically everything else you could need for a relaxing weekend. Good options at Playa Esperanza on Airbnb include a thatched-roof suite with a private terrace on the second floor, a jungle cabana with an outdoor shower, or a first-floor room with a private patio, each of which sleep two guests.

This is one of the best Airbnbs to consider if you need to book a place but aren’t sure how many guests you have coming. You can book the Central Tulum Oasis, which sleeps four, and just rent other units in the building if it turns out extra people are coming — like this nearby unit that sleeps another four.

While it doesn’t have a full-sized pool, it does have an outdoor plunge pool, which allows more than a few people to sit on the edges and tip their toes in the water while enjoying a cold drink. Aside from the fantastic starting price, one of the best things about this Tulum bachelorette party Airbnb is the kitchen: or, more specifically, the fact that you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to. The host can arrange a private chef to prepare breakfasts, formal dinners, or anything in between.

Bedrooms: 6Sleeps: 14Rates from: $468 (or $33.50 per person)

Yum Kaax translates to “goddess of the jungle,” which seems like an apt way to describe this gorgeous Airbnb in Tulum town. It’s a six-bedroom rental with a unique architectural blend that mixes a Mexican colonial house with the details of a Moroccan riad. It’s a unique property in a town when most new builds are in earth tones, cement, and glass. Considering how gorgeous it is, the low starting price is almost shocking.

If you have any worries about visiting Tulum, you’ll be pleased to know that the home has an on-site security guide since it’s managed by a hotel company — but it’s in a walkable, residential neighborhood, anyway. The rooftop pool, arched doorways, and dark decor elements may make you feel like you’re in Marrakech, but when you see the first-floor gardens and lush surrounding palms, you’ll remember you’re in Mexico. Talk to the owner in advance if you’d like to add on chef services (or any other staff or concierge services) during your stay.

Is Tulum or Cancun better for a bachelorette party?Tulum bachelorette party - beach club swings

Photo: Ingus Kruklitis/Shutterstock

If you have your heart set on a Cancun bachelorette party, look a little bit more into Tulum before booking your lodging. While Cancun is known for all-inclusive resorts, bars, beach clubs, and places to party, it doesn’t have a lot of variety beyond that. However, Tulum has plenty of places to party and drink, but it also has eco-beach clubs, yoga retreats, Mayan ruins, and places where you’re more likely to be surrounded by yogis on meditation retreats rather than American tourists posted up on beach chairs all day.

A Tulum bachelorette party can be as wild or as tame as you’d like and also includes the option for cultural activities. However, Cancun is a little cheaper, at least for your standard all-inclusive chain beach hotels — luxury hotels in Cancun will probably cost just as much as those in Tulum. But if sitting on a beach and hitting buffets isn’t the vibe you’re going for, Tulum will probably be a better fit.

Is Tulum safe?Tulum downtown mexico - art sculpture

Photo: Alexandra Lande/Shutterstock

Tulum is generally considered to be a safe destination for tourists, but like any other tourist destination, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and take basic safety precautions. You should exercise caution and be mindful of pickpocketing and other petty crimes, especially in tourist areas. It’s also recommended to avoid walking alone in isolated areas, especially after dark.

In recent years, Tulum has seen an increase in crime, including theft and robbery. There’s also been an uptick in violent crime; however, much is related to drug cartels. So as long as you avoid buying anything illegal (which you should, as that only increases the demand for a product that leads to violence), you should be fine. But of course, always use reputable taxi or transportation services and avoid the usual dumb behaviors that make you a target at night, like getting super drunk and walking home alone.

That said, tourism is essential to Tulum’s economy, and hundreds of reviews comment on how safe the Airbnbs felt and how they were great locations for everything from family reunions to 70th birthday parties. As as long as you use your head, you’ll be fine. A bigger concern may be getting stomach issues from the tap water, so unless you want to end your Tulum bachelorette party with a case of Montezuma’s Revenge, be sure to drink only filtered water (a bottle with a built-in filter could be a great gift for your party attendees!)

How do you get to Tulum, Mexico?

The closest international airport to Tulum is Cancun, so if you’re wondering how to get to Tulum, look for flights into Cancun. Fortunately, because Cancun is a popular destination for US travelers, there are direct flights from almost every major airport in the country. That makes it easy to reach for everyone, even if your guests are coming from across the country, and ensures that flight prices are relatively low. Cancun is the largest airport in Mexico and flights are frequent on multiple airlines.

From Cancun, it’s about an hour and a half to Tulum. Some of the higher-end Airbnbs can arrange transportation for your group, but otherwise, the best bet is to arrange a shuttle. Companies like Cancun Airport Transportation and Happy Shuttle Cancun offer private transfers to Tulum starting around $70 each way.

New Zealand’s South Island Is Pure Magic: 6 Natural Wonders You Need To See

New Zealand is one of the happiest countries in the world. It helps that its landscapes are so stunningly otherworldly that New Zealand is a go-to filming location for literal fantasy lands. But for travelers, New Zealand’s natural beauty can be more than just a fantasy. If you’re headed to the Land of the Long White Cloud — a popular translation of Aotearoa, New Zealand’s indigenous Māori name — start with the South Island to see for yourself. These six natural attractions prove just how fantastical the New Zealand’s South Island truly is.

Fiordland National Park

Spanning 1.2 million hectares of New Zealand’s South Island, Fiordland is one of four national parks belonging to the Te Wāhipounamu South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. It’s New Zealand’s largest national park, and every inch of it affirms its status as a natural wonder. In addition to fjords, Fiordland is home to soaring peaks, tranquil lakes, tall waterfalls, lush valleys, marshy wetlands, and diverse forests ranging from birch and beech to native bush. Numerous animal species inhabit these environments, including rare bird species such as kiwis, rock wrens, and blue ducks. Come to hike, boat, kayak, fish, camp, and more.

Brewster Hut

Standing at nearly 4,800 feet of elevation, Brewster Hut is a 12-bunk hut located in Mount Aspiring National Park in the Otago region of the South Island. It’s available for overnights — advance bookings required between December 1 and April 30 while May 1 to November 30 are first-come, first-served — but it’s also the terminus of the Brewster Track, a three-mile out-and-back trail that sets off at Fantail Falls and continues over the Haast River. Despite the relatively short distance, the estimated time for the Brewster Track is six to eight hours.

Blue Pools Walk

The Blue Pools are another highlight of Mount Aspiring National Park, located at the confluence of the Blue and Makarora Rivers. The result is a swath of glacial waters that present a particularly vibrant and icy blue hue. The Blue Pools Track is a mile-long return walking route that traverses beech and podocarp forests until you come across a swing bridge spanning the Makarora River that leads to a viewing platform. This is a particularly worthwhile outing from Wānaka, a popular outdoor resort on the South Island, via the Haast Highway.

Hooker Lake

Hooker Lake is a glacial lake in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park on the South Island. It’s fed by meltwater from one of New Zealand’s largest glaciers — the mighty Tasman Glacier — and is surrounded on either side by majestic mountains. Impressive views of Hooker Lake can be found all along its shoreline, where you’ll find trails that traverse through nearby meadows and groves. Of course, you can also get out on the water by kayak, canoe, or boat.

Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a fjord located in the southwest of the South Island. Its deep blue waters host an abundance of sea life, including seals, dolphins, and penguins. The sound is also home to Mitre Peak — one of New Zealand’s iconic mountains — as well as numerous waterfalls pouring from sheer vertical rock faces. The sound consists of steep granite cliffs, waterfalls, and valleys surrounded by untouched native rainforest. There are countless activities to immerse yourself in such as kayaking, sightseeing tours, cruising, hiking, and diving.

Lake Pukaki

Located in the Southern Alps of the South Island, Lake Pukaki is an alpine lake that’s fed by runoff from glaciers in Mount Cook National Park. Its deep blue waters are unparalleled in clarity and bordered by expansive snow-capped peaks. Visitors can cruise on the lake by canoe or kayak, cast a fishing rod, or hike or bike along the lakeshore. Lake Pukaki is also surrounded by winding roads that are perfect for scenic drives. Either way, keep an eye out for exciting birdlife such as swans, black swans, and kiwi birds.

Look Out, Paris: London’s Giant Cube Croissants Are Taking Over the Internet

Light, flaky, buttery, golden brown — the croissant is a legend among French pastries. Most people would probably agree that it would be impossible to improve on the croissant, especially because you can already get them filled with delicious flavors like chocolate or ham and cheese. But Le Deli Robuchon in London found a way to reimagine the croissant: turn its iconic crescent shape into a large cube, double down on the fillings, and even add some cute toppings.

@foodwtf You can try the viral cube #croissant at📍Le Deli Robuchon in #London #UK 🎥 IG: @onehungrymedic #foodtravel #croissantlover #UKfoodie #foodie #londonfoodie ♬ Give It To Me – Timbaland

Le Deli Robuchon is a bakery in Mayfair, London, that’s named after celebrated French chef Joël Robuchon whose restaurant group runs Michelin-starred restaurants in Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and more in addition to London and Paris. The bakery is part of the larger Robuchon London outfit, which also includes the fine French restaurant Le Comptoir Robuchon.

The now-viral cube croissant helped put Le Deli on the map, at least the virtual one. Officially called Le Cube Robuchon, it currently comes in three flavors — chocolate, vanilla, and matcha — and are served fresh daily from 11 AM. Also on the menu at Le Deli are a variety of regular croissants, pastries, breads, sandwiches, panini, and patisserie sweets, as well as heartier fare ranging from salads and soups to charcuterie, cheese platters, and full-on hot meals like lasagne and whole roast chicken with three sides, gravy, and your choice of stuffing.

While Le Cube Robuchon is unique to Le Deli, cube croissants are starting to crop up at other bakeries outside of London, too.

Where to try cube croissants outside of London

Andersen & Maillard, Copenhagen, Denmark: Andersen & Maillard is a cafe and bakery with two outposts in Copenhagen. The Nørrebrogade location is a coffee shop and roastery while the Nordhavn location is an artisan bakery that serves cube croissants.

Where: Nørrebrogade 62, 2200 København, Denmark

Forêt Noire, Vancouver, Canada: Forêt Noire specializes in all manner of sweets, including several unique and hybridized pastries like the cube croissant and the cruffin, or croissant muffin. The cafe is currently located on West Broadway with a second location on Robson Street planning to open soon.

Where: 236 West Broadway, Vancouver V5Y 1P6

Little Pebbles, Toronto, Canada: Between Forêt Noire and Little Pebbles, Canadians have easy access to cube croissants on both coasts. This Japanese-leaning artisanal bakery and cafe is located in Toronto’s bohemian Kensington Market neighborhood.

160 Baldwin St #8, Toronto, ON M5T 3K7, Canada

232 Cakery, Tauranga, New Zealand: 232 is a bakery with two locations in Tauranga, a harborside city on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It calls its signature pastry a “cube danish” — a danish being a laminated pastry that originated in Vienna just like the original croissant — but in box-shape it looks just like a cube croissant.
