Celebrate National Train Day by Learning Everything About US Train Travel

Traveling by train is more than just getting from point A to point B — the journey by rails matters as much as the destination, if not more. It’s certainly true in the US where taking the train is less about convenience and more about the experience of traveling slowly across varied and beautiful landscapes. For all those who favor traveling by train to any other modes of transportation, there’s a circle to be drawn on your calendar around May 13, 2023, i.e. National Train Day. This US holiday is for train aficionados and prospective train travelers to celebrate riding the rails and learn more about all things trains.
When is National Train Day and what is it about? Is Amtrak the only passenger train in the US?What are the best train rides in the US?Are there any luxury trains in the US?Are there any sleeper trains in the US?Are there any bullet trains in the US?What’s the fastest train in the US?What are the most scenic train rides in the US?How can you cross the US by train? When is National Train Day and what is it about?National Train Day is a holiday that was started by Amtrak in 2008 and that is celebrated each year on the Saturday closest to May 10. In 2023, it will be held on Saturday, May 13.
National Train Day celebrates the historical, cultural, and economic contributions of rail transportation in America. The holiday has its roots in the event of May 10th, 1869, when the Golden Spike was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, marking the completion of the first transcontinental railroad.
Events held around National Train Day vary per location but often include free or discounted rides on local trains and/or model train displays. Demonstrations and other activities related to American railroads are also common.
Is Amtrak the only passenger train in the US?
Photo: Jillian Cain Photography/Shutterstock
No, Amtrak is not the only passenger train in the US. While Amtrak is the national rail operator in the US, other companies do offer passenger rail services in the country, such as Via Rail Canada (Canada’s national passenger rail company), Brightline (a Florida-based rail service), and Rocky Mountaineer (that runs between Colorado and Utah), among others. Additionally, there are several smaller regional companies that provide service between certain cities or states, such as the Alaska Railroad.
What are the best train rides in the US?
Photo: Beth Ruggiero-York/Shutterstock
If you’re looking for a long and slow ride across large swathes of the country, Amtrak has four amazing options:
The California Zephyr: From Chicago to San Francisco in three days across a variety of amazing scenery. The Empire Builder: Following in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark, the Empire Builder travels from either Seattle or Portland to Chicago. The Southwest Chief: From Chicago to Los Angeles via eight states. The Coast Starlight: Between Los Angeles/San Francisco, and Portland/Seattle along the Pacific coast and across forests and snow-peaked moutains. For shorter trips that are just as beautiful, check out The Denali Star, a stunning train route run by the Alaska Railroad, or the Rockies To The Red Rocks journey run by Rocky Mountaineer.
There are also vintage train journeys, as well as fall foliage-focused rides, short but fun train journeys in Hawaii, or even booze-filled trips like the ones you can take on the Napa Valley Wine Train.
Are there any luxury trains in the US?While Amtrak offers First Class Private Rooms which are lovely and comfortable, especially on long routes, it would be a bit of a stretch to call them deluxe. The Rocky Mountaineer that operates the Rockies To The Red Rocks journey between Colorado and Utah has a much more luxurious offering.
The company Vacations by Rails organizes luxury train trips in the US with various railway operators, including Amtrak and the Alaska Railroad. If you’re looking to indulge, they are your best option.
Are there any sleeper trains in the US?Amtrak’s fleet is equipped with sleeper car accommodations in a variety of settings, from roomettes to family rooms and even ADA accessible bedrooms. The sleeper cars are found on many of Amtrak’s routes so you can have a good night’s sleep even on journeys that last multiple days.
Are there any bullet trains in the US?While there are no bullet train that match Japan’s in the US, there are high-speed trains:
Amtrak’s new Acela fleet, scheduled to begin service in late 2023, will run at top speeds of 160 mph, while today’s Acela fleet operates at a maximum of 150 mph. Acela is the high-speed train service that connects cities on the East Coast (Boston, New Haven, New York, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Washington).Brightline, a Florida-based intercity rail service, operates high-speed trains that can run at up to 130 mph. What’s the fastest train in the US?The fastest train in the US is Amtrak’s Acela train that can run at a maximum of 150 mph. In comparison, the fastest train in the world is Japan’s Maglev that runs at 310 mph.
What are the most scenic train rides in the US?
Photo: Jacob Boomsma/Shutterstock

Photo: Cory Woodruff/Shutterstock
According to Amtrak, the railway operator’s most scenic train routes are:
The Coast Starlight that connects Los Angeles and SeattleThe California Zephyr that runs between Chicago and San FranciscoThe Pacific Surfliner that operates in Southern California between San Luis Obispo and San DiegoThe Cascades that goes from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Seattle, Portland, and Eugene. Some of Amtrak’s routes also go through national parks, making for extremely beautiful and tranquil scenery.
Note that there are Observation Cars (also known as Sightseer Lounges) with huge floor-to-ceiling windows on Amtrak’s long-distance double-decker trains that run west of Chicago.
The Rocky Moutaineer and the Alaska Railroad also offer incredibly scenic journeys in Colorado and Utah, and Alaska, respectively. The Rocky Mountaineer and the Alaska Railroad trains have glass-dome cars where you can get the best views.
How can you cross the US by train?Amtrak’s network make crossing the US from east to west, and vice-versa, by train extremely easy. One possible route is to go from New York City to Chicago onboard the Cardinal, and then reach the West Coast by riding the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle, or by riding the Southwest Chief/Texas Eagle from Chicago to Los Angeles. You can take the journey from west to east by riding the same trains in the opposite direction.
How To Explore Miami’s F1 Scene During Race Weekend

Miami has been making waves in the world of Formula One since it was announced that Miami would be hosting its first-ever Grand Prix race in 2022. The first-ever running of the Miami Grand Prix was a resounding success with star-studded appearances by the likes of Venus and Serena Williams, David Beckham, Paris Hilton, Miami’s own DJ Khaled, and so many others. And race enthusiasts, partygoers, and travelers alike are already looking forward to the race’s return to the 3-0-5, running May 4 through 7.
Whether you’re familiar with the race through traveling to the most luxurious racetracks and cities in the world, the sport’s passionate fanbase, or the hit Netflix series Formula One: Drive to Survive, this year promises to be a memorable experience for tourists visiting the city.
Areas of Miami to see during F1 weekendThe F1 Miami Grand Prix circuit is located inside the Hard Rock Stadium. That makes it easy to make the most of the city when you’re not busy taking in all of the racing action.
Downtown Miami20-minute drive to the stadium without traffic
If you want to be in close proximity to the racetrack and the major points of interest in the city, consider staying in Downtown Miami. It’s convenient not just because of the many lodging options and shopping opportunities, but also because of its closeness to the Port of Miami.
Located in the heart of Downtown Miami, The Elser Hotel is one of Miami’s newest gems. The Elser gives guests a front row view of Biscayne Bay, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and exclusive offers if you’re staying over three nights.
Miami Beach30-minute drive to the stadium without traffic
This area of Miami is where you want to stay for a luxurious experience. The region is well-known for the luxurious hotels, hip restaurants, and stunning beaches that can be found here. During F1 weekend, you’ll find that Miami Beach is where the party comes alive. An amazing accommodation suggestion is the SLS South Beach. Designed by French Architect and Designer, Phillipe Starck and iconic rock star Lenny Kravitz, this hotel will give you everything you need and more.
The SLS South Beach has four on-property dining concepts, including The Bazaar (Latin) and Katsuya (Japanese); two outdoor pools; beach access; and is tucked on Collins Avenue, giving you a VIP pass to the best parts of South Beach. Bear in mind that it is slightly further away from the Hard Rock Stadium than it is from the downtown area of Miami.
Wynwood20-minute drive to stadium without traffic
If you’re staying in Wynwood, you’re capturing an area of Miami that is full of life and has become a tourist hotspot in recent years. Anyone seeking a one-of-a-kind cultural experience should definitely pay a visit to this area, which is famous for its vibrant street art, trendy restaurants, and boutique shops. A great hotel recommendation is the Arlo Wynwood. It fuses luxury and boutique style as the first hotel to be opened in this artsy district. Enjoy doing yoga or a dance workout, catching some unique exhibits, or hanging out at the rooftop pool.
What to do during race weekend

F1 Miami is not short of options to have a good time. Here are some of the best things to do during race weekend, and if you’re staying for longer, there’s plenty of Miami attractions and Miami parks that are worth your time (and don’t miss the opportunity to explore Miami’s Little Havana).
For those who care just as much about the foodMiami is known for its eclectic flavors, and F1 weekend has no shortage of moments where you can play with your palate.
American Express presents Carbone Beach (May 4 through 7): This four-night supper club features Italian-American dishes by Chef Mario Carbone and live performances.Once Upon A Kitchen (May 5): Brought to you by the international experience agency GR8, this $6,000 culinary activation is one of the most exclusive dining events for F1 Miami weekend. For one night only, experience some of the greatest culinary artists, including Massimo Bottura, Juan Manuel Barrientos, Bernardo Paladini, Dr. Alex Ott allows you to enjoy crafted cocktails, fine-dining, and live music.On-site circuit cuisine: In the stadium, circuit offers fans everything from barbecue and American food classics to ice cream, snow cones, and frozen yogurt. You can check out all the dining options and which turns and zones they’re located on the F1 Miami Grand Prix app.For race enthusiastsView this post on InstagramA post shared by Racing Fan Fest (@racingfanfest)
If you’re headed to F1 Miami Grand Prix as an enthusiast and looking for all things fast and furious, The Racing Fan Fest, the largest off-track experience in the city, is where you want to go. The fan fest is located in Wynwood and features activations such as the Red Bull Fan Zone which will include race simulators, an N16 racing celebrity Esports tournament, pit stop challenge, official team memorabilia from Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri, and more. There will also be live music, virtual reality, former cars that have hit the race tracks, and more from brands like ESPN and Oakley. And if you can’t make it to the track, feel free to pull up to The Racing Fan Fest where they will have a weekend watch party all weekend long.
The fan fest is open May 5 and 6 from 4 PM to 3 AM and May 6 and 7 from noon until 3 AM. You can RSVP and get a free souvenir cup here.
For people who came for the partyView this post on InstagramA post shared by F1 Miami Grand Prix (@f1mia)
For those just looking for a good time, F1 Miami weekend isn’t going to disappoint.
The MAXIM Race Weekend Party will be held on May 5. The McLaren Race House will take place from May 5 to 7 and is a 3-day pass experience. Tickets include an exclusive VIP block party in Miami’s Art District to celebrate McLaren’s 60th Anniversary. BleauLive is brought to you by the Fontainebleau on May 6 and 7 and features acts like Martin Garrix, Kaskade, and Ludacris.
You don’t have to leave the circuit to continue having a good time at Hard Rock Beach club. Included in your on-site track views will be live performances, beachy vibes with pools and day bed rentals, and more. The experience includes two guests over 21.
Making the most of MiamiFor other dining options in the city, Miami has a plethora of places to eat, including many that Miami’s own chefs recommend. I highly recommend Sugar, a rooftop restaurant and lounge that is for guests 21 and up after 6 PM. The menu offers Asian-inspired options, craft cocktails, and an upscale party vibe with a DJ. You can make reservations here.
For all things F1 Miami Grand Prix, you can download the app for Android and iOS or head to the FAQs page where you can find everything from getting your tickets, where to park and how to get to the stadium, what items and bags are prohibited, and much more.

How To Plan the Perfect Two-Week Itinerary for a Trip To Spain

From its bustling cities to its picturesque countryside and delicious cuisine, Spain not only offers a diverse landscape for travelers, but a rich cultural experience. Two weeks in the country certainly aren’t enough to appreciate the hills of Basque country, the Moorish architecture, Catalonian cuisine, epic nightlife, or beautiful beaches, but you can at least get a taste of all this country has to offer.
Begin your journey by exploring the capital city of Madrid. Spend some time strolling down Gran Via or head to Plaza Mayor to take in the local architecture, while you enjoy traditional dishes like paella and tapas. When you’re done sightseeing in Madrid, make your way to Barcelona – one of Spain’s most popular cities filled with iconic sights like the famously-unfinished La Sagrada Familia cathedral and Park Güell. When night comes, join locals at one of the lively tapas bars, indulge in classic Catalonian paella, or end your day by seeing a traditional flamenco show.
Next stop is Granada, where Moorish influences still linger within the walls of Alhambra – an impressive palace and fortress complex full of captivating artwork and detailed gardens. After taking in all that Granada has to offer, it’s time to move on to Valencia. Here you can enjoy warm Mediterranean beaches, explore amazing architectural sites, and learn about Valencian customs through various local festivals held throughout the year.
Adding Toledo into your two-week schedule is also a must. Start off by exploring some of the city’s impressive architecture – from the Gothic-style Cathedral of Toledo to the Church of San Roman. History buffs will have plenty to do here. Visit ancient walls and defensive towers that date back to the 12th century, or admire artistic masterpieces scattered throughout various churches and monasteries. Other attractions include Museo del Greco – a former home of famous painter El Greco – and Alcazar de Toledo, which originally served as a fortification.
And if you’re if you’re looking for a truly late night — and you don’t mind a quick ferry or domestic flight — it’s tough to beat Ibiza. From its world-famous nightlife to slightly less-famous natural beauty, Ibiza isn’t just for the nightclub-inclined. Start off by taking a stroll across the island’s serene hills, or exploring Cap des Falco – a beautiful nature reserve with towering cliffs and caves. For those looking for some relaxation time, head over to some of Ibiza’s world-famous beaches – from Cala Salada to Playa d’en Bossa – where you can soak up the sun while enjoying views of the glimmering waters.

11 Airbnbs in Alaska for a Gorgeous Summer Vacation

Of all the states in the US, Alaska may have some of the coolest hotels, from budget cabin resort to luxurious wilderness lodges.
But much of that is just because it’s Alaska — and if you’ve been to Alaska, you’ll know the state has a unique blend of luxury, wilderness, adventure, and quirky businesses and personalities. And that means that many of the Airbnbs in Alaska are just as unique and outdoorsy as the state’s hotels. Whether you want to visit Alaska in June, July, August, or September, you’ll find no shortage of cool home rentals to be your basecamp for summer in Alaska.
When it comes to planning your trip, don’t forget that Alaska is enormous. In fact, just one of the state’s national parks (Wrangell-St. Elias) is larger than Delaware, Rhode Island, and Connecticut combined. So when booking an Airbnb in Alaska for a summer trip, be sure to take the home’s location (as well as how you’d get there) into account when planning where your trip. Alaska’s road network isn’t as extensive as other states, and you don’t want to book an Airbnb only to find out you can only reach it via boat or ATV.
These are the 11 best Airbnbs in Alaska for a summer wilderness escape.

The best Airbnbs in Alaska in June
Photo: Travel Alaska
June in Alaska is typically a month of transition from spring to summer. Weather can vary, but temperatures are usually in the 50s to 60s Fahrenheit during the day. June can still be quite rainy, but the daylight hours are long, especially after the summer solstice. It’s generally considered the shoulder season, with fewer crowds and lower prices than the peak summer months of July and August. Just keep in mind that some businesses may be closed in early June — though in most of the popular tourist towns, it should be summer as usual.
In June, the best towns to visit are those further south in the state, like Juneau, Ketchikan, Seward, Sitka, Homer, Kodiak, and Skagway. Higher-elevation areas (including Denali) may still have quite a bit of snow on the ground, depending on the winter.
The Rainforest Retreat

Photo: Airbnb
Closest town: JuneauMaximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 1Rates from: $191/nightJuneau is smack in the middle of the Tongass, which is technically a rainforest (a temperate one, however, so it’s not as hot and muggy as a tropical one). That makes Juneau extremely lush and green, and no place is a better basecamp for exploring the nearby trails in Alaska in June than the aptly named Rainforest Cabin.
It’s decked out in natural materials so it feels very organic to its surroundings, and wildlife visits are common, from birds to bears to bald eagles. While it may feel remote, it’s only five miles from Juneau, making it easy to reach the town’s best restaurants (and trailheads).
Cozy A-frame

Photo: Airbnb
Closest town: JuneauMaximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 2Rates from: $219/nightIf you can’t imagine visiting a place as unique as Alaska in June and staying in a plain old hotel, this adorable A-frame cabin could be a good pick. Unlike with many A-frames, it has two separate bedrooms with doors, instead of open-air lofted areas. That makes it great for couples traveling together. It was built in the 1980s but has since been updated, and has not just a large indoor living area, but a large deck and an outdoor area with a firepit.
Note that both bedrooms are upstairs, and there’s a steep flight of stairs to get into the house. So it may not be a good pick for anyone with mobility issues.
Sitka Houseboat
Photo: Airbnb

Photo: Airbnb

Photo: Airbnb

Photo: Airbnb
Closest town: SitkaMaximum guests: 6Bedrooms: 4Rates from: $425/nightWhen it comes to fishing, Alaska is one of the top spots in the world. So for a truly Alaskan experience, skip the on-land options and book this totally private houseboat in Sitka Harbor. It’s actually a tugboat from WWII, and it’s been profiled in multiple magazines and TV shows since it’s the last boat of this kind still afloat. It’s just a mile from downtown Sitka, so it’s a great place to rent if you don’t have a car.
On board, guests have access to four bedrooms, multiple decks, and a full (though slightly old-school) kitchen. Usually during Alaska in June, Sitka is warm and the weather is calm, but there’s no guarantee. So while this is one of the coolest Airbnbs in Alaska, you may want to skip it if you’re prone to motion sickness.
By the way: Sitka is a great place to go fishing, but you can also paddle and access great hiking and cool wildlife experiences. It may not be as well-known as towns like Juneau, but it’s actually a great vacation destination in the state unto itself.
The best Airbnbs in Alaska in July
Photo: WTS Photo Images/Shutterstock
Alaska in July is busy as can be as its in the very middle of the summer tourist season. All businesses and activities are in full swing and basically anywhere in the state is accessible (well, as accessible as it can be).
Aside from crowds and cost, the only downside to July in Alaska is that the mosquitoes can be pretty annoying; in fact, there’s a running joke that Alaska’s state bird is the mosquito. Fortunately, it doesn’t get that hot in Alaska, so you’ll be fine wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts most of the time, which should keep most of the mosquitoes at bay. And you’ll find that mosquito net face covers are the epitome of high fashion.
Airbnbs in Alaska can fill up fast in July, so try to book as early as possible since the state gets busy. Of course, “busy” in Alaska isn’t the same as busy in any popular mainland US city, so you don’t have to worry about hour-long waits for restaurants and such. But you may see a few more people than usual on the trails (or in fields photographing fireweed with you, which is at its peak in mid-July).
The Moose Lodge

Photo: Airbnb
Closest town: HomerMaximum guests: 6Bedrooms: 3Rates from: $221/nightHomer is one of the most fun towns in Alaska — in fact, Matador picked it as one of the coolest small towns in the US for 2023. That’s because it has everything you could want from Alaska in July: you’re surrounded by beaches, have access to fresh seafood and cuisine on the Homer Spit, are just a boat ride from the glaciers and hikes of Kachemak Bay State Park, and are near all the best wildlife and hiking tours on the Kenai Peninsula.
This classic log cabin is very close to the Spit and has a huge deck with seating for six and a private firepit. Most rooms have views of the Gulf of Alaska and you can walk to the beach. This home is very close to some of the best attractions in Homer (like Bear Creek Winery) and has a second rentable cabin if you need more space. Note that Alaska in July has pretty late sunsets, and this house doesn’t have window coverings. So bring an eyemask if you want a break from the endless views.
The Park Bus

Photo: Airbnb
Closest town: FairbanksMaximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 1Rates from: $135/nightAlaska in July is a great time to visit Fairbanks, about four hours north of Anchorage. While it’s not technically in the northern part of the state, it is about as far north as most visitors go. It’s known for a long northern lights viewing season and winter activities like hiking with reindeer, but because it gets so cold and snowy, it has a rather short hiking window. July is a perfect time to go.
The Park Bus is one of the most unique Airbnbs in Alaska and is the perfect place to make your “Into the Wild” dreams come true (minus the ending). You’re likely to see wildlife like bears and moose just outside your windows, and it’s equidistant between Fairbanks and Chena Hot Springs. Oh, and it’s not just any bus: it’s a former Denali National Park shuttle bus. It’s beloved by guests, considering it has perfect five-star reviews across all categories (and more than 160 reviews).
Timberline Treehouse Chalet

Photo: Airbnb
Closest town: GirdwoodMaximum guests: 10Bedrooms: 4Rates from: $230/nightTowns around Anchorage are easy to visit year-round, with frequent direct flights from Anchorage to cities in the lower 48. But it’s especially nice in July, when the days are long and leave plenty of time for day tripping to nearby sites like the Crow Creek Gold Mine, taking boat tours past glaciers that depart from nearby Whittier, hiking in Chugach State Forest, or looking for wildlife around the Eagle River Nature Center. You can even drive to the Kenai Peninsula in about 30 minutes.
There are more Airbnbs around Anchorage than anywhere else in Alaska, so you won’t hurt for options. But an especially good pick is the Timberland Treehouse Chalet in Girdwood, just a few miles from Alyeska Resort. It has a private hot tub and a big backyard, plus room to sleep 10 people. It’s a good pick for a group of friends planning a long weekend of hiking or fishing, since it’s only about 40 minutes from the airport. It’s one of the few Airbnbs in Alaska that works for a long weekend trip, especially since renting a car at the Anchorage airport is quick and east.
The best Airbnbs in Alaska in August
Photo: State of Alaska/Matt Hage
August is one of the busiest months for tourism in Alaska. Visitors from all over the world flock to the state to take advantage of nearly 19 hours of daylight and the warmest weather of the year (highs of 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit). It also tends to rain less in August, and when it does, it’s usually not too heavy (though that varies based on where you are in the state, of course). August is a great time to go backpacking or hiking in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, or go fishing for the state’s famous salmon.
August is also the start of viewing season, especially for seeing the state’s famous grizzly bears. Like July, Airbnbs in Alaska can also get booked quickly in July, so you’ll have fewer available options if you’re a last-minute planner.

Closest town: KenaiMaximum guests: 8Bedrooms: 3Rates from: $221/nightDon’t be fooled into thinking Salmonfest is just a small get-together for fishermen. Salmonfest is the biggest festival in Alaska, held every August. The weekend-long celebration is Alaska’s version of Coachella, with camping, food and drink vendors, live music, and tons of entertainment. Past headliners include Old Crow Medicine Show, Greensky Bluegrass, Indigo Girls, Ani DeFranco, and more.
If you’re planning to attend Salmonfest but don’t want to camp, you’ll dig this roomy cottage with enough space for all your jam-band friends to crash for the weekend. It’s a high-end lakefront home with a pool table, a large deck facing the water, and a bright and airy living space. The owners also have a car available to rent, making it easy to get back and forth from Salmonfest.
By the way, if you visit during July, you’ll be smack in the middle of some of the prettiest fields of fireweed in North America. It’s especially photogenic along the drive between Ninilchik and Homer.
The Fireweed Cabin

Photo: Airbnb
Closest town: Healy (Denali)Maximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 2Rates from: $221/nightThere’s no beating around the bush: people who visit Alaska in August often have one destination in mind, and it’s Denali National Park. But Denali’s hotels are really expensive, and book up quickly. So if you’re looking for Airbnbs in Alaska near the park, check out The Fireweed Cabin. It backs to the Denali Wilderness and is about 20 minutes from the park’s tourist center.
But what makes this cabin an especially good pick for Airbnbs in Alaska is that it’s in Healy, the closest town to Denali. So you have access to grocery stores and restaurants, unlike staying in the park. And Healy also has lots of good hiking trails, which may be a welcome break if you get tired of Denali’s mostly unmarked, unmapped trails.

Closest town: Homer (Halibut Cove)Maximum guests: 6Bedrooms: 2Rates from: $399/nightThis private cabin in Halibut Cove near Homer is as gorgeous as they come, with a prime location on a rocky shoreline overlooking the bay. Guests get a 700-foot-long private beach, and the owners can arrange kayak rentals and help with logistics, including recommendations on how to get there. There’s plenty of outdoor space, including multiple decks with an outdoor grill. Just note that it’s an open floor plan, so there’s not a lot of privacy between the sleeping areas. There is a second rentable lower level with more privacy, though — just ask the owners about adding it to the rental.
Halibut Cove is one of the most unique small towns in Alaska. And if you’re visiting Alaska in August, it’s worth taking the roughly 45-minute boat ride to reach the small town. You’ll need to bring everything you need with you as there aren’t any shops in the partially floating town, save for a post office, The Saltry Restaurant, and a coffee shop. Be prepared to kayak to get around (and to see plenty of bald eagles).
The best Airbnbs in Alaska in September
Photo: knelson20/Shutterstock
September may still be warm in other parts of the US, but it’s solidly autumn in Alaska. Depending on where you are, snow is possible, and many of the summer tour operators have shut down for the year. However, there are two things you may be able to see in September in Alaska: early-season aurora borealis, and grizzly bears.

Closest town: FairbanksMaximum guests: 6Bedrooms: 1Rates from: $231/nightStarting in September, if you’re lucky, you can see the northern lights around Fairbanks. September tends to be the shoulder season around Fairbanks, so it could go either way for weather. It’ll probably be warm enough to hike, but snow is certainly not impossible.
But this unique Fairbanks cabin is one of the coolest Airbnbs in Alaska regardless of weather, and not just because it has a cozy barrel sauna. The cabin has a giant net hammock built into the second floor, making it the perfect cabin for lounging. There’s also an outdoor hot tub just for the cabin. It’s part of a small lodge that has a few other cabins plus a few treehouses, so if you have a larger group, everyone can book their own room but be in the same area. The entire lodge can accommodate up to 46 guests — Alaskan wedding, anyone?

Closest town: AnchorageMaximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 2Rates from: $99/nightIf you want to visit Alaska in September to see grizzly bears, this is your spot. The modern and bright Airbnb is in Anchorage, which is where bear flight-seeing tours to Lake Clark National Park or Katmai National Park begin. Those tours are usually expensive, but at least this home isn’t, with a starting price under $100 a night. It also has a hot tub, which will feel good after a day spent walking around looking for bears.
While there’s a chance there could be other renters using it, the owners say that’s not very common — and hey, if there is another traveler in the hot tub with you, you’ll hopefully have good bear-viewing tales to share. The covered outdoor firepit is also a nice touch, especially on chilly September evenings.

What is the Pantheon?
Photo: Phant/Shutterstock
The Pantheon is a large monument in the historic center of Rome, the capital of Italy. Initially, the Pantheon was built as a temple dedicated to the Roman Gods, but it was converted to Christianity and became the Santa Maria ad Martyres Church in the early 7th century and remains as such today.
What is inside the Pantheon?

Photo: Heracles Kritikos/Shutterstock
Inside the Pantheon, you will find pews, an altar, chapels and everything you would expect from a Catholic church. But because it’s not an ordinary building but a masterpiece of architecture, prepare to be blown away by the decor of this circular building. The immense dome and its oculus dominate the marble-filled space.
Who is buried in the Pantheon? When it was converted into a Catholic church in 608, the Pantheon became the final resting place of many martyrs, but since then, many other have been buried in the former temple, including Renaissance artist Raphael. Two Italian kings, Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I, as well as Umberto I’s wife, Margherita of Savoy, are also buried in the Pantheon.
When was the Pantheon built and for what purpose?Commissioned by Roman General and architect Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa around 25 BC, the Pantheon was initially built as a temple to the Roman gods. It was entirely rebuilt much later, between 118 and 125 under Emperor Hadrian. It was converted into a catholic church in 608 by Pope Boniface IV and named Saint Maria ad Martyres.
What is the Pantheon made of?The Pantheon is made of concrete, bricks, and marble. The concrete used to build the structure has proven to be an extremely strong and durable mix of limestone and volcanic ash.
What does the term “Pantheon” mean? The term pantheon means “all the gods” in Greek, from “pan” meaning “all”, and “theos” meaning “god”.
In the past, a pantheon referred to a place of worship, a temple. Today, when one says “the Pantheon” most people understand that they are referring to the one in Rome, the most famous of all. There is more than one pantheon in the world, however.
Is it free to visit the Pantheon?Yes, it is free to visit the Pantheon. On weekdays, you can just walk in, but on weekends and public holidays, you need to make a reservation.

The Paris Pantheon was completed in 1790 and was the highest point in Paris before the construction of the Eiffel Tower. Unlike the Pantheon in Rome, one must pay to visit the Parisian Pantheon.

Airbnb Announces New Transparent Pricing, a Rooms Category, and Enhanced Security Features

Airbnb on May 3 announced its Summer 2023 Release. The company’s biannual announcement included the debut of Airbnb Rooms, a new feature that allows users to book private rooms and engage with their local host in the manner of a tour guide. Airbnb’s releases of new products and updates have in the past included the reveal of Categories and Airbnb Setup, which made it easier to list a property on the site.
Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page.
“Staying with a host was the original idea behind Airbnb,” CEO Brian Chesky says in a new video announcing the update. “There really wasn’t a better, or more affordable, way to experience a place. We want more people to try it. But to try it, they have to feel comfortable staying with a host.”
Meet Airbnb Rooms — an all-new take on the original Airbnb pic.twitter.com/SMN8frTWMJ
— Brian Chesky (@bchesky) May 3, 2023
The new “Rooms” category features over 1 million rooms for guests to choose from, located all over the world. Information about the host is displayed in a new feature called the “Host Passport.” Here, guests can see info including the host’s ratings, reviews, and history as an Airbnb host. The host also has space to share information about themself, including their profession and hobbies. Enhanced privacy features have been enacted to help guests feel comfortable sharing a home with their host.
Affordability is forefront with “Rooms” – the average cost of a room is just $68 per night. Guests can select hosts based on not just location but can now identify common interests, cool interior design, or just about anything else that might draw them to connect with their host. In other ways, the stay is similar to how Airbnb has always run. Guests can come and go as they please and are covered by popular Airbnb features including Airbnb Cover.
Other news announced in the Summer 2023 release include Total Price Display, which allows guests to view the total cost of the place they hope to book including any applicable fees. This is a long-requested feature aimed at simplifying the booking process. Wishlists also received an upgrade to make the bookmarking of cool-looking homes easier and more navigable. Smaller features include better optimization of monthly search and bookings, notes, and pins. Guests can also now connect their bank account directly to Airbnb in order to pay via ACH.
