What It’s Like Staying in a Riad, Morocco’s Traditional Dwelling

Staying in a Riad in Morocco can be a truly memorable experience. Riads are traditional Moroccan houses built around an interior courtyard or garden, typically featuring beautiful architecture, intricate tile work, and ornate decorations. Many riads have been converted into guesthouses, providing travelers with an opportunity to stay in a traditional Moroccan home and experience local culture firsthand. Each riad has its own design and character, ranging from grand and opulent to cozy and intimate.

This particular riad, Riad Dyor in Marrakech, is a luxurious guesthouse located in the heart of the Marrakech medina, just a few minutes’ walk from the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square. The riad has been beautifully restored, blending traditional Moroccan architecture with modern luxury amenities. Guests here can enjoy a peaceful courtyard and garden, featuring a refreshing pool and comfortable seating areas. There’s also a rooftop terrace, providing stunning views of the medina and the Atlas Mountains.

One of the advantages of staying in a riad is the opportunity to interact with the staff and local Moroccan people. Many riads are family-run businesses, and the staff are often happy to share their knowledge of Moroccan culture and way of life with guests.

Riad accommodations typically include comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, and some amenities like a pool or a rooftop terrace. In some cases, meals can also be provided, typically featuring traditional Moroccan cuisine such as tagine and couscous. Staying in a riad also puts you in close proximity to many of Morocco’s historic sites and attractions, such as Marrakech’s famous medina and the souks (markets) of Fez.

9 Airbnbs in Costa Rica for a Tropical Summer Escape

If you’re looking for a summer getaway that’s half beachy paradise and half rainforest adventure, look no further than Costa Rica. The country is small but packs a punch when it comes to things to do. It’s known for some of the best surfing in Central America, and the famous Monteverde cloud forests are a natural treasure. Add in wildlife lodges, rainforest hikes to hidden waterfalls, several national parks with rare species like jaguars, and the fact that the country’s volcanoes produce some of the world’s best hot springs, and it’s no surprise that there’s so much demand to visit the gorgeous country.

Fortunately, that demand also means there’s a perfect Airbnb in Costa Rica for every type of traveler — and that means every type of traveler. Luxe beachside villas are easy to come by, but so are treehouses tucked into the cloud forest, surf shacks with open-air living rooms, and more creative options made out of shipping containers and bubbles. If you’re looking for a unique Airbnb in Costa Rica to soak up the summer sun, keep reading.

Closest town: TamarindoMaximum guests: 14Bedrooms: 5Rates from: $1,290

The Sunset House is an Airbnb Plus property, so while it’s not cheap, it’s certainly luxurious as can be. This Airbnb in Costa Rica exemplifies the best of indoor/outdoor living, with five bedrooms that open to decks with beach views. It comes with a staff of three (a housekeeper, caretaker and property manager) and is just a five-minute walk to Tamarindo Beach. It’s also only a quick 10-minute walk to Tamarindo town, which is known for a lively and young beach-bar type atmosphere.

Split this house a full 14 ways, and it actually ends up being a luxurious stay for a fairly reasonable per-person nightly cost.

Closest town: San CarlosMaximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 2Rates from: $115/night

It’s hard to overlook this unique Airbnb in Costa Rica, especially because it’s just one of three in an eco-resort tucked into the rainforest. It’s part of Bio Thermales Natural Resort, roughly two hours north of San Jose, and guests have access to the natural on-site hot springs. The resort itself is generally not super developed, so the pools are surrounded by lush foliage, and it’s not unusual to see monkeys, sloths, and iguanas wandering by while you’re soaking in the hot and cold pools.

The treehouse itself sleeps four — two on the first floor and two in the lofted area, but given the low price, it’s a great pick for a couple or solo traveler, too. There’s a small kitchenette, a private raised deck, and plenty of shared space around the resort’s pools and outdoor picnic and relaxing areas.

First things first: this is not a full private Airbnb. But it is a luxe suite inside a very small boutique hotel, and guests of this particular room get a gargantuan bathroom and access to the private beach club next door. There’s also a private beachview balcony.

The rest of the space is basically a dreamy traditional villa, and you’ll have access to spaces like a huge kitchen (though breakfast is served daily), a big living room, and tons of outdoor living space. There are only four other rooms, so while you can socialize with your fellow guests, you don’t have to worry about feeling cramped. Danta Beach is about 30 minutes from Liberia International Airport and well known for amazing sunsets. If you’re looking for a romantic Airbnb in Costa Rica, this is it.

Of particular note is the impressive living room, with a full sliding wall that opens the infinity pool and ocean views beyond.

Playa Hermosa is on the Papagayo Peninsula and is known for a huge sandy stretch of beach and warm, usually gentle water. That makes it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, beginner surfing, and scuba diving. There are also dozens of tiny small towns dotting this stretch of coast, making it a great place to go beach hopping — stopping once or twice for a fish taco at beach bars in between, naturally.

Closest town: Santa TeresaMaximum guests: 6Bedrooms: 3Rates from: $328/night

For a super-organic, natural stay with just a touch more creature comforts than a full treehouse, check out this rainforest-inspired, open-air Airbnb in Costa Rica’s Puntarenas Province. There’s a saltwater pool and a shaded yoga shala, and it’s within walking distance of the town of Santa Teresa. The town is a little more remote than other beach destinations on this coast, but it has a growing population of digital nomads and other laid-back residents who prefer Santa Teresa’s more low-key atmosphere over bigger party towns.

This Airbnb is for the full unit, but you can also rent the top or bottom privately if you don’t need all three bedrooms. Note that the house is tucked away up a dirt road, so make sure to rent an SUV (or an ATV) if you book it.

Closest town: Piedras Blancas de OsaMaximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 2Rates from: $153/night

This cool Airbnb in Costa Rica is off the grid on the owner’s large property, and guests have access to all the hiking trails, swimming holes, and waterfalls they can walk to. Though the whole house is beautiful, one of the coolest parts about it are the multiple decks looking out onto the jungle. It’s a birdwatcher’s dream, and the hosts thoughtfully included binoculars and a birding guide for guest use.

As dreamy as this Airbnb is, there are two considerations to know before booking. First, it’s a 10-to-15 minute walk to the house, since there’s no road access. And second, the pool is shared with the owners who live below. Considering they built this house, they’re probably pretty cool people to hang out with — but it’s not a private plunge pool situation. However, it is an “easy access to wildlife” situation, as it’s close to Piedras Blancas National Park and the wilderness areas around it.

Visitors to the country who want to spend their summer days hiking among some of the most stunning views in Central America should take a pass on the beach for a few days and instead book this dome on a raised platform in the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

It’s not a full home, as the “kitchen” is really just a coffee station. However, since it’s just five minutes to Santa Elena, you don’t have to go far for restaurants, bars, or a grocery store. More importantly, however, is the fact that it’s near the famous suspension bridges and Curi Cancha Reserve (a bird-watching haven). So you probably won’t want to return to the dome midday since you’ll be out exploring, anyway.

The Coco Art Villas look like they should be on the cover of a design magazine, with a modern style that somehow creates privacy while still making guests feel surrounded by nature. Individual units don’t have kitchens, but the complex has an all-day restaurant and bar.

One thing to note is that these villas are fairly open to nature. There’s a mosquito net above the bed, but if you are absolutely anti-bug, you may want to look elsewhere. Of course, Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, so you’ll find bugs everywhere. You’re probably not considering an Airbnb in Costa Rica anyway if you have full-on arachnophobia.

The Pipe House describes itself as a “premium hostel,” which is partially accurate. But this isn’t a bed in a dorm that sleeps 16 people. These rooms are unique rounded units, with nine total on the property. All rooms include breakfast, and because it’s within Baulas Marine Park, your breakfast will probably be accompanied by the sights and sounds of macaws and other tropical birds. Each room is made from a giant concrete pipe, and there are four shared bathrooms, plus a shared kitchen and yoga area.

Playa Grande is one of the best places to surf in Costa Rica and you can rent surfboards from the Pipe House. But there’s also a really healthy sea turtle population and plenty of areas to see them if you’d prefer to get on the water in a kayak instead.

See the Luxurious Side of Los Cabos at the Incredible Casa Maat

As someone who travels for a living, there is one destination I always find myself returning to: Los Cabos. It may be a no-brainer why this sun-soaked and sand-filled destination attracts travelers worldwide, but for me, Cabo offers something a lot more meaningful. I first lived in Cabo for a month on my digital nomad journey, and the city provided a peaceful retreat where I could focus on my physical and mental wellness.

When I returned to Cabo this time, I was excited to be back in a familiar place and experience it in a fresh and new way with a weekend at Casa Maat, a boutique hotel located inside the JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa. I was there to attend the eighth edition of the Relish the Heritage Festival, which was hosted by chef Thierry Blouet and welcomed Carlos Gaytán, who was Mexico’s first chef to earn a Michelin star. Food from Mexico’s Puebla region was on full display, and combined with the incredible food, Casa Maat proved to be the perfect escape.

casa maat in los cabos mexico

Photo: Casa Maat at JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa

The name for Casa Maat comes from both Spanish and the language of the Kiliwa, an indigenous people of Mexico living in Baja California, where Los Cabos is located. Casa is Spanish for home, while maat means Earth. I left my time at Casa Maat feeling rejuvenated and reminded of why I set off to travel in the first place: to be deeply connected with myself, others, and the world.

The rooms at Casa Maatinifinity pool in rooms at casa maat los cabos

Photo: Casa Maat at JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa

Casa Maat is an intimate experience. The boutique luxury hotel has 39 rooms and 6 suites, which rooms starting around $500 to $600 a night, depending on the season. The guest rooms come either with a king or two double beds, with options to look out to the ocean or toward the resort. Each suite is distinct and comes with a living area, balcony, beachfront room, and two bedrooms. Some suites have a fireplace and plunge pool or whirlpool.

The rooms have a modern and smooth design and all the traditional amenities one would expect, from Nespresso coffee machines, to LCD TVs and high-speed internet. I never wanted to leave the rainfall shower in my room or the balcony overlooking the vibrant blue water where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. I also enjoyed the hotel’s personal touches, such as the butler service included in the rate, which helped coordinate activities in town and served as my personal point of contact for my hotel needs during the stay.

While the rooms are reason enough to love Casa Maat, there’s no shortage of things to do that adds to the experience. For groups and companies, the hotel has beautiful lounges that can be tailored to suit the guests’ needs. For families traveling to Casa Maat, the boutique hotel offers a game room and a movie room for fun family activities.

Photo: Casa Maat at JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa

While there, I spent a lot of time at Jasha Spa, an indoor spa on the property with breathtaking design. A garden welcomes you at the entrance as you walk in. There are 12 intimate treatment rooms, and a vitality pool, private whirlpool, and private jacuzzis within the spa. For my service, I experienced a standard deep tissue massage for 60 minutes. The masseuse used massage and aromatherapy oils infused with natural healing ingredients that reduce stress and allowed for the ultimate relaxation.

While in Cabo, if traveling from December to March, book a whale-watching tour through Cabo Adventures. During those months, the whales are migrating, and you can watch them flipping and jumping through the water.

What to eat at Casa Maat

Photo: Casa Maat at JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa

While Casa Maat is an exclusive hotel, guests still have access to the amenities and restaurants at the encompassing JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa, all within a 10 minute walk. For dining options, the main restaurants are located on the JW Marriott side. The hotel has six high-end restaurants: Café des Artistes, Auka Deli, Niparaya Grill and Bar, Nak Grill & Bar, Úa Culinary Artisans, and Kaha Bar, all with different menu offerings. Niparaya Grill and Bar offers delectable cocktails and sushi. Nak Grill & Bar is a poolside restaurant serves both seafood and steak. The pool bar, Kaha Bar, serves fruity cocktails and snacks. My favorite restaurant for the weekend was UÁ Culinary Artisans, a fine-dining experience with an infusion of international cuisines.

On Sundays, the hotel hosts what it calls “the best brunch in Cabo” at Úa Culinary Artisans guests at both Casa Maat and the JW Marriott — and it lives up to this title. The brunch features live cooking demonstrations, an array of food from tacos to sushi to a doughnut wall, and fresh coconut waters.

How to get to Casa Maatbeach near casa maat in los cabos

Photo: Casa Maat at JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa

Los Cabos is located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. It encompasses two towns, Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Cabo San Lucas is stereotypically known to have more of a spring break crowd, while San José del Cabo is more on the calmer local side. However, both are great places to spend time in Cabo. Casa Maat is an exclusive boutique hotel inside JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa in San José del Cabo.

Flying into Cabo is simple, with many flights available to the main airport, Los Cabos International Airport. Casa Maat is roughly a 30-minute drive from the airport, and I was able to book my airport transfer from EPIC, a private transportation and shuttle service in Cabo.

How To Get From Tokyo’s Narita Airport Into the City Center

Narita Airport is one of Tokyo’s two major international airports, but unfortunately, it’s located over an hour from the center of the city. That means once you land, you need to figure out how to get into the city. It’s not necessarily complicated, but it does require some planning ahead.

About 37 miles east of central Tokyo, Narita Airport serves as a hub for several international airlines, including Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. It handles a large volume of international and domestic flights, and houses a range of restaurants, shops, and lounges. If you’re traveling to Tokyo, there’s a good chance you’ll be coming through this airport.

Here are a few ways to get into Tokyo from Narita Airport.

Narita Express

This is a fast and convenient train service that takes you directly from Narita Airport to major stations in Tokyo, such as Tokyo Station, Shinjuku Station, and Shibuya Station. The journey takes around 60-90 minutes depending on your destination.

Limousine Bus

This is a more comfortable and affordable way to travel from Narita Airport to popular destinations in downtown Tokyo. The bus stops at major hotels and train stations in Tokyo, and the journey takes around 60-100 minutes depending on your destination.

Keisei Skyliner

This is a fast and direct train service that takes you from Narita Airport to Ueno Station in the heart of Tokyo. The journey takes around 45-50 minutes, and the trains are comfortable and modern.

Taxi

Taxis are available at Narita Airport, but they can be expensive, especially during peak hours. It is recommended to use taxis for shorter distances within Tokyo itself.

How To Explore Ameyoko Street, Tokyo’s Famous Open-Air Market

Tokyo is known for its cherry blossoms and hidden temples, but it’s also a powerhouse for shopping. Ameyoko Street, in particular, is a bustling open-air market that’s home to an array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. It’s not quite Times Square, but it truly does have everything, from traditional Japanese stores with local crafts to modern businesses. Here’s how to make the best of a stroll down Ameyoko Street.

If you’re a foodie, there’s plenty of options here to satisfy your taste buds. Delicious eateries like Umeya offering traditional Japanese staples like sushi and tempura coexist with new age ramen joints, plus international cuisines like Chinese dumplings or Korean BBQ – all within easy reach. In the evening, bars and clubs such as Ginza Come Across open their doors for those looking for a more lively night out.

Ameyoko Street also has tons of choices when it comes to shopping. Visitors can find branded products at big-name stores like Muji and Uniqlo, plus smaller outlets such as Komehyo Secondhand Department Store, which sells pre-loved luxury items at discounted rates. Other stores stock everyday items such as clothing, general goods, pharmaceuticals, and even pet supplies.

For those wanting some culture, the popular theatre district around Nogizaka Station offers excellent kabuki performances or musical comedies. In addition, comic book fans can find a range of manga in various stores on the street – perfect for diving into the world of Japanese animation.

8 Chic Beach Resorts in Italy for a Glam Summer Getaway

Whether it’s the middle of summer or the long nights of winter, dreaming of the sun-soaked shores of Italy is a common vacation fantasy. And with so many beach resorts in Italy across the country’s 4,00 miles of shoreline, there’s a good chance there’s a resort you can afford in a place you want to visit.

The best beaches in Italy range from white-sand beaches dotted with colorful umbrellas and Europeans living la dolce vita to more rugged and rocky coastlines with beach chairs tucked into nooks and crannies. Some of Italy’s beaches are wide and sandy, but you’ll also find popular beaches covered in pebbles where you’ll surely want to spring for a beach chair rental.

From the stunning Amalfi Coast to the picturesque Sardinian coastline and lesser-known reaches to the north, these are the best beach resorts in Italy for travelers aching to discover the beauty of Italy’s stunning coastlines.

A quick note about cost: Italy has long been the go-to summer getaway for much of the summer vacation crowd in Europe, so prices rise exponentially in the summer, especially for hotels on the beach. Go in May before school breaks or in September before it gets cold to (hopefully) find the right balance of warm weather and smaller crowds. The earlier or later in the season you visit, the further south you’ll want to go.

We hope you love the spaces and stays we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

Where to find the best beach resorts in Italy

Italy, as you can guess, has plenty of coastal beaches. If you visit in the middle of summer when all of the country is warm, you can also visit some of the lakeside hotels further north and find warm enough weather for lounging. If you’re visiting a small town, consider relying on Italy’s train system to get around, rather than dealing with parking in the busy summer season.

Hotel Poseidon

Where: PositanoDirect beach access? NoRates from: $682/night

Hotel Poseidon is on the Amalfi Coast in the town of Positano, and there’s no beating around the bush: it’s a very expensive place to visit. But you can save a few Euros by booking a room at the Hotel Poseidon, which does not have a private beach. That makes the rooms cheaper than beachfront Amalfi Coast properties, even though it’s still a high-end, four-star resort.

Rooms at the Hotel Poseidon have a classic Italian feel, with tile floors, arched doorways, and wrought-iron balconies. Many rooms have coastal views, and there’s a cocktail bar by the pool overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, plus a rooftop restaurant for something more formal. The hotel’s central location also makes it easy to walk to most of the restaurants in Positano.

When you do want to hit the beach, it’s an eight-minute walk to Spiaggia Grand (i.e. Positano Beach). There’s a public area, or you can rent loungers and umbrellas and such from the various beach clubs. Also nearby is Fornillo Beach, which tends to be a little less busy (but it’s still, you know, the Amalfi Coast in the summer). It’s about a 10-minute walk and you can also rent beach chairs and umbrellas when you get there.

Where: AmalfiPrivate beach? Sort of — private sea access, with a beach club built into the cliffsRates from: $615/night

If Amalfi brings to mind visions of terraces covered in fresh lemon trees, rocky cliffsides dotted with small clusters of deck chairs, and VIP beach service where the only thing you need to carry with you is your sun hat, you’re thinking of Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi. It’s one of the most luxurious beach resorts in Italy, with a private beach club overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. There’s even a salt water swimming pool and several outdoor terraces with live music and evenings illuminated with hanging white lights.

As you’d expect, living like Italian royalty on summer holiday doesn’t come cheap, and even the “low” rates in the summer are still extremely expensive. So add this to your list of potential honeymoon locations, rather than a place you’d book on a whim — especially if you want the “Romeo and Juliet” suite, with a private pool built directly into the cliffs. While rates start in the $600s, it’d be hard to find a room in the summer for under $1,000 per night.

Where: San Vito Lo Capo, SicilyDirect beach access? YesRates from: $682/night

If you’re looking for a beach resort in Italy on the island of Sicily, Hotel Capo San Vito should fit the bill. It sits on a white sand beach (and has its own beach club and beach bar), though it’s also close to many of Sicily’s other great beaches. That includes the shoreline at the Monte Cofano Reserve and the gorgeous Faraglioni di Scopello, a private beach best reached via a boat tour.

San Vito Lo Capo is a popular beach town on Siciliy’s northwestern coast, known for soft beaches and generally calm, warm water. However, if the beach isn’t your thing, take note, as this hotel doesn’t have a pool. However, there is plenty of outdoor space around the hotel, including several gardens and lounge areas. Rooms aren’t very large, but they are nicely appointed. There’s also a three-person suite, which could be a good option for groups of friends traveling together through Italy.

Sardinia is a bit more rugged and outdoorsy than the rest of Italy’s big beach destinations and can — sometimes — be a smidge cheaper than other beach areas. Baglioni Resort has stunning views, a Michelin-starred restaurant, private multi-room villas, and modern rooms akin to something you’d expect to find in Cabo San Lucas.

But the real highlight of this resort is no doubt its private beach, offering visitors an idyllic escape along the pristine coastline. From Lu Impostu beach, guests can paddle, swim, snorkel, or take boat tours to scuba dive or enjoy a romantic sunset cruise.

Nearby on Sardinia, you’ll find places to go cliff diving, pine forests ideal for morning hikes, and can’t-miss destinations like Poetto Beach and the Cagliari Old Town. The island is the second-largest in Italy and actually has quite a few more budget-focused accommodations, though most that are under $300 or so a night are unlikely to be within walking distance to the beaches.

Where: Monterosso al Mare, Cinque TerreDirect beach access? NoRates from: $185/night

Hotel Palme exemplifies old-school, low-key Italian style, the way it was decades before “The White Lotus.” It’s one of the best beach resorts in Italy if you dislike the idea of a sprawling, modern resort. It’s a true mom-and-pop place, with an on-site restaurant, gardens, and a big breakfast spread every morning. The bright pink hotel is a one-minute walk from Fegina Beach and proof that a gorgeous Cinque Terre basecamp need not cost an arm and leg. Rooms during weekends in the summer start at $217 — quite the steal for this part of Italy. The rooms are nothing special, but you’re not there to spend all day inside, right?

The hotel is in Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the villages in Cinque Terre (Cinque Terre means “five lands”). It’s a beautiful town known for stunning beaches and coastal walks between towns, plus dozens of excellent restaurants and cafes. And if you want to save money on a car rental, consider reaching Cinque Terre by train — having a car in the tiny towns is a bit of a headache, anyway.

Private beach access on a local beach beloved by Italian locals and surrounded by local restaurants and cafes — what could sound better than that? Beach resorts in Italy can get quite pricey, which is what makes the Aurora Hotel a great choice. It’s in Sperlonga, halfway between Rome and Naples. That’s where you’ll find the famous Grotta di Tiberio (a beach grotto owned by a Roman emperor), and the town has plenty of free beaches.

The Aurora Hotel has its own private stretch of beach, and guests get an umbrella and loungers to use while there. Rooms at the hotel aren’t particularly stylish and are more akin to what you’d find at a nice beach motel in the States. But that said, many have balconies or terraces, and the hotel itself has an affordable terrace restaurant overlooking the cute town. Sperlonga is easily accessible via train from Rome, making it a popular day-trip location for Romans — which means it tends to be less busy in the evenings compared to destinations used to overnight guests.

Il Pellicano is one of the most luxurious beach resorts in Italy, with a private beach and huge terraces covered in clusters of sun loungers and oversized umbrellas. It’s as chic and classically Italian as you can imagine, and rooms have flower-covered balconies and terraces. It’s actually the sprawling former home of European elites in the 1960s, but now, it’s a glam hotel for travelers willing to fork out the admittedly steep nightly rate.

The resort has its own large beach area on the Argentario Coast steps from the hotel, complete with a private pier, heated swimming pool, and cliffside elevator. There’s also great snorkeling from beaches in the area, in case you need a break from sitting in the sun. Oh, and there’s a Michelin-starred restaurant on site, too.

Portofino is in northern Italy, making it best visited in the peak of summer (July and August). The cute town is known for pastel-colored houses, beautiful beaches, and luxury yachts parked in its waters come June. It’s also popular hiking destination and has fantastic northern Italian cuisine (heavy on the seafood, naturally).

If that sounds good, book your room at Hotel Piccolo Portofino. It’s an excellent four-star hotel, with a similar look to some of the more famous cliffside hotels in Amalfi. The hotel has a private beach (it’s pebble-covered, not sandy) and has a series of walkways, gardens, and patios connecting the gorgeous Italian resort with the Tyrrhenian Sea below. And if you do want a sandy beach, it’s close to popular Pedale Beach.

Rooms are fairly modern and don’t have the oversized balconies of some other beach resorts in Italy, but given the hotel’s beautiful outdoor space, there’s no reason to spend much time in your room, anyway.

Portofino’s privileged location and reputation for elegant summer getaways means it’s quite pricey, so it’s surprising to see rates in the summer here starting around $600 per night. It’s downright affordable by Portofino standards.

When is the best time to go to Italy?beach resorts in italy - genoa

Funny you should ask: Matador did a complete guide to the pros and cons of every season. It varies a lot on where in the country you want to go, however. You’ll have warm weather year-round in the southern part of the country, but if you head into the mountains in March, you’d better bring your skis. Summer, as you might imagine, is the best time to go to Italy for beaches (but also the most expensive).

Does Rome have a beach?beach resorts in italy - ostia near rome

Indeed, Rome does have a beach — more than one, actually. However, they’re not in the city (since the city is not on the coast). They’re about 45 minutes west, and good options include Ostia Beach and Fregene Beach.

While it’s generally accepted that they’re a bit busier and not quite as picturesque as other beaches in Italy, they’ll make do if you only have half a day to spare. Just remember that many beaches are primarily private, meaning you’ll have to rent beach chairs and such from a beach club, rather than being able to walk in and plop down anywhere you like.

How many islands does Italy have?beach resorts in italy - elba islands

Elba, Italy. Photo: Umomos/Shutterstock

Italy is more than just “the boot.” The country has roughly 450 islands, though some are more popular than others. When it comes to beaches, some of the most popular islands in Italy include Sicily and Sardinia (the largest and second-largest islands in the country, respectively), Capri, and Elba, among many others. Elba may be of particular interest for travelers keen on outdoor activities beyond just relaxing at the beach. It’s a little more rugged, a little less crowded, and a smidge less developed as a tourism destination (for now, at least).
