Fishermen Scramble to Catch 80,000 Trout Released from Fish Farm

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

80,000 trout

80,000 trout were accidentally released into the wild when a cargo ship ripped through the fish farm holding them

The fish were being farmed in the Baltic sea 124 miles off the coast of Copenhagen
The cargo shipped accidentally shredded the net they were being kept in
Wildlife officials are worried that the freed rainbow trout will eat the eggs of local sea trout
Any available fishermen are encouraged to grab a rod and catch as any as they can
Large schools of fish can also block fire hydrants

Shigeru Miyamoto, the Man Behind Mario, Isn’t Allowed to Ride a Bike

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

shigeru miyamoto

Shigeru Miyamoto created some of the most famous video games in history, but Nintendo won’t allow him to ride his bike to work.

Shigeru Miyamoto joined Nintendo in 1977
He is the man responsible for games like Zelda, Mario, and Donkey Kong
He was originally hired to make cabinet art for old-school arcade games
He considers Wii Fit his midlife crisis, a product of changing his diet, quitting smoking, and starting to exercise
As he became more important to the company, they started forcing him to drive a car instead of riding his bike
The company said he’s too important to risk getting injured on a bike
On average, there are 3,287 car accident deaths a day, but I guess that doesn’t really factor into their thinking

MINI BION
“BIONs” – short for Believe It or Not – is the word we use at Ripley’s to refer to anything that is unbelievable and worthy to become part of Ripley’s lore and collection.

Aboard a Gourd: One Man’s Record-Breaking Journey

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

aboard a gourd

Just in time for Thanksgiving…

In a world filled with the sweet smell of pumpkin pie and the inimitable pumpkin spice latte stands one man and his giant pumpkin carriage—I mean, boat. On September 5, 2015, Todd Sandstrum broke the record for the longest distance traveled in water by pumpkin.

He hollowed out the 817-pound gourd, lowered it into Massachusetts’s Taunton River by crane, and propelled the pumpkin 3.5 miles, surpassing the previous 3-mile record.

The Saga Continues…

But wait, there’s more! On September 3, 2016, Todd Sandstrum once again took to a giant gourd—this time one over 1,200 pounds—and paddled for 8 miles straight down the same Taunton River, thereby breaking his own 2015 record.

Thanksgiving is Weird

That’s right; your family isn’t the weirdest thing about Thanksgiving. For over 200 years America has kept its day of thanks in the top spot for weird holidays.

Thanksgiving Soda not Sweet Enough For You?

If a Tofurky and gravy flavored beverage doesn’t whet your whistle, how about a Thanksgiving cake?

The Turkey

If you have more traditional tastes, here are some turkey facts you can bring to the dinner table:

Every year, the president pardons a Turkey from the dinner table.
Benjamin Franklin praised the turkey as a “more respectable bird” than the eagle.
20% of turkeys produced in the US are eaten Thanksgiving Day.
Butterball® has a turkey hotline that receives over 100,000 calls a year.
Male turkeys are called “gobblers.”
Wild turkeys can fly 55 mph!

The Pilgrims Were Weird Too

If the modern age can’t convince you, what about the progenitors?

The Plymouth settlers may have been devoutly religious, but that didn’t stop them from guzzling beer. Every pilgrim on the Mayflower was rationed a gallon of beer per day!

Believe it or not, the pilgrims never even meant to land at Plymouth. They were originally headed to Virginia but had to stop because they ran out of beer.

At this point, you might think beer has earned more of a spot at the Thanksgiving table than turkey, but the first Native American to speak to the pilgrims also came to ask for beer!
