Blog Tour: HELL TO PAY by Pamela Fagan Hutchins

Hell To Payby Pamela Fagan Hutchins

MY REVIEW

Disclaimer: I downloaded a free Kindle version of this book from the link sent by the author via The Book Club, in return for my honest review.
Hell to Pay is #7 in a romantic thriller series by Pamela Fagan Hutchins. I grabbed the opportunity to read and review this one since we are getting a book by a western author after a long interval.
When I read the first few pages, I was kind of confused. There were a slew of characters and way too many things happening, all together. It was difficult to navigate. This is probably because most of them have travelled through the first six books. A regular follower of the series would have been able to jump into the book immediately. But then, the book is also recommended as a standalone. I gritted my teeth and plodded on.
After the first 2-3 chapters, things became clearer and I could follow the story. Emily is a paralegal who works with her lover Jack. Jack has already proposed marriage and there’s a vague plan for them to be married in a month’s time. Emily is unsure. How could she wed a guy who hasn’t told her he loves her? But the sex is great. When they are in bed, it seems the future can only be amazing. But out of it, Emily remains unconvinced. Then there’s the backlog. Jack had been married to the beautiful Lena and two kids too, until all three were murdered in a bomb blast.
Dennis is murdered, in a gruesome fashion. Of all people, his best friend and partner, Phil, is the prime suspect. Phil’s fiancéeNadine is shattered. The District Attorney office seems to have a watertight case. Things get from bad to worse when Phil goes into a diabetes induced coma.
In the meanwhile, Emily, who had lost a baby (she had been married to a guy who’s bisexual, and prefers his boyfriend), is keen to adopt Betsy, a little Mexican girl who’s lost her parents. But Betsy is in a foster home belonging to Mary Alice and Trevon, who are part of an extremist church group.
The author takes the reader through some nail-biting moments in this racy thriller with a dash of romance. I liked the way Emily, Wallace, Emily’s father, Betsy, Michele and many others were characterised. I wish there had been more on the dashing Jack. But then, the story is tightly written and well presented.
The background, the scenes, and the relationships, have been well handled. I enjoyed the dialogues, especially between Wallace and Emily. Then there was the endearing Clyde. And many others, though blink and miss, were absolutely necessary to make the story complete.
One tiny peeve though: The story was running superbly well till the last major scene. After that, though things were tied up perfectly, the last bit was all rush rush. I wish there was a bit more there.
I found the final court scene adorable.
VERDICT: Readers of both romance and thrillers will love this one.

Blurb

USA Best Book Award-Winning Series, Cross Genre Fiction.Third book in the Emily series, a spin-off from Katie & Annalise.
Big-haired paralegal and former rodeo queen Emily thinks she’s got her life back on track. Her adoption of Betsy seems like a done deal, her parents have reunited, and she’s engaged to her sexy boss Jack. Then client Phil Escalante’s childhood buddy Dennis drops dead, face first into a penis cake at the adult novelty store Phil owns with his fiancée Nadine, one of Emily’s best friends. The cops charge Phil with murder right on the heels of his acquittal in a trail for burglarizing the Mighty is His Word church offices. Emily’s nemesis ADA Melinda Stafford claims her witness overheard Phil fighting with Dennis over a woman, right about the time Phil falls into a diabetic coma, leaving Nadine shaken and terrified. Meanwhile Betsy’s ultra-religious foster parents apply to adopt her and Jack starts acting weird and evasive. Emily feels like a calf out of a chute, pulled between the ropes of the header and the heeler, as she fights to help Phil and Nadine without losing Betsy and Jack.

She says her first book came out in 2012 and that her latest, Hell to Pay, is the seventh book in the series. The books all have ties to Texas, with “an interrelated cast of kick-ass female protagonists.” She says the novel's heroine (“a former rodeo queen turned paralegal”) returns to her home town in west Texas and discovers an extremist cult has set up shop and is terrorizing the local townsfolk.
- As told to Houston Press.
Read a Teaser
Chapter One
Disco lights whirled around me, or was it the room? My inner party animal had atrophied, not that I’d ever been a real heavyweight. If it wasn’t for the fantastic people-watching—and the fact that this was the celebration party for the burglary acquittal of our firm’s client Phil Escalante the day before, and his engagement to Nadine, one of my best friends in Amarillo—I've bagged this shindig. Instead, there I was with tendrils of fake smoke floating past my face, ten
feet from a DJ dressed in a black latex fetish costume and spiked dog collar and A tall woman maybe ten years older than me appeared out of the low lights and sidled up to me, engulfing me in the odor of cigarettes. Her vanilla hair sported a generous dollop of dark chocolate roots, which was pretty funny to me since she had a body shaped like a cone. A waffle cone. A waffle cone with sparkly sprinkles from the spinning ball overhead. Behind her trailed a paunchy man of roughly her height. His eyes had locked on me in a way that made my skin crawl with leeches that weren’t there.
Rick James’s “Super Freak” ended. The silence in the cavernous L-shaped room was immediate and complete, but short-lived. A clamor of voices from the one-hundred- or-so guests resumed, their voices echoing off the bare walls and “Hey, Foxy Loxy,” the man mouthed at me. Or did he? Surely not. It was hard to tell with the lights playing tricks on my eyes.
The woman spoke past me. “You and your wife got any plans later?” Her bellow seemed to fill the room to its farthest corners, even with all the other voices. I winced and shrank under the eyes that shifted our way.
Not Jack, though. The horse rancher cum criminal attorney was nothing if not unflappable. His topaz eyes twinkled. “Emily’s not my wife.”
The man surged toward Jack. “You’re not together?”
“I’m his fiancée,” I said through my recently tightened braces and painfully rubber-banded teeth, leaving out “and he’s my boss.” I waved my big, fat teardrop-shaped diamond at him to accentuate my point, then I pinched Jack’s arm where my hand was looped through its crook. I’d capitulated to the mouth gear when my childhood orthodontist saw the gap between my front teeth and insisted I needed Invisalign then, filled my mouth with metal instead. Payback for never wearing my retainer, I guess.
The man and woman looked at each other and nodded. She asked, “Care to join us? We’ve got a room at a no-tell hotel nearby.”
Jack’s whole body shook and I didn’t dare look at him. I was a sucker for his laugh. In fact, I was a sucker for everything about him, from his lived-in boots to his permanent tan to his Apache cheekbones. Before either of us could think of an appropriate response, Phil interrupted.
“Millie, Pete, leave my poor friends alone.” He clapped a hand on my shoulder and gently pushed me aside to clap his other onto Jack’s. “They’re not swingers. And this isn’t a swingers social. I’m out of the business.”
The space between Millie’s eyebrows narrowed and puckered as drops of
light rained down on her face. “It’s a free country, ain’t it?”

Blog Tour: WRONG MEANS RIGHT END by Varsha Dixit

Wrong Means Right End  by Varsha Dixit

My Review

Disclaimer: I received a paperback of this novel from the publisher via The Book Club in return for my honest review.
This is the third book that I am reading by Varsha Dixit, the other two being OnlyWheat Not White and Right Fit, Wrong Shoe . All three books are beautifully written romances.
#WMRE is the second in a series, though each book can be read as a standalone. The first one, #RFWS, is the story of Nandini and Aditya that ended in a “Happy Ever After” marriage. Sneha, who is the heroine of the second book, was introduced to readers in the first book, as Nandini’s friend. We knew Sneha was married with a baby boy.
#WMRE is set in Mumbai where Nandini AKA Sethanilives with her billionaire businessman husband Aditya Sarin in a penthouse. Sneha has also shifted to Mumbai with her little son Advey and lives in a tiny apartment along with Amla, a maid who lives with them, taking care of Advey and their home. Sneha is divorced and works for the Sarins nowadays.
Spoiler warning from here on...
Nandini’s primary objective is to find a suitable guy for Sneha and she keeps setting up blind dates during the lavish parties the Sarins keep throwing in their palatial home. Unhappy about the set up but unable to do much about it, Sneha endures her best friend’s matchmaking attempts stoically. It’s during one of these attempts that Nikhil Chandel walks back into her life. Yeah, she used to know him many years ago.
Sparks fly! But both Sneha and Nikhil are at constant loggerheads. Until a common thread brings them together, to save Nandini’s and Aditya’s marriage.
I enjoyed this book even more than #RFWS. This one is better proofed for one thing. For another, the story flows better. I enjoyed reading about the HEA relationship between Nandini and Aditya. However a story ends, the reader likes to know what happened after the marriage and that’s what Varsha Dixit has brought into this story.
Aditya’s ex-fiancée Gayatri’s character has been built well. So was Nandini’s new friend Mona, the vamp’s. Amla is a quirky character and adds fun to the story.
The romance between Nikhil and Sneha takes time to build up, but the waiting is worth every page of the book. The author is quite an expert at writing love stories, I must say. I am looking forward to reading the third book in the series.
I guess it’s the story of Gayatri, Aditya’s jilted fiancée. Wondering...

If you are a fan of romance in an Indian setting, then you should not miss @WMRE by Varsha Dixit.

Blurb
Readers fell in love with Sneha and Nandini, two best friends who stuck to each other through heartbreak and joy in the bestselling novel, Right Fit Wrong Shoe. Now they are back in a delightful sequel that follows the two women as they begin the next phase of their lives in Mumbai.

After a failed marriage, Sneha, a single working mom, has no time, or inclination, for love. She resists every matchmaking attempt made by the overzealous Nandini, married to industrialist Aditya. But then the past intrudes in the form of the gorgeous and rich, Nikhil, who brings along Gayatri to break-up her ex-fiance, Aditya's marriage. Sneha enlists Nikhil's help to salvage the situation. But how does she even talk to a man who clearly loathes her? As Nikhil and Sneha try to grapple with their egos and combustible chemistry, love blossoms.

Wrong Means Right End, an exuberant story about love and friendship, is filled with surprises and a wicked twist at every turn.

Blog Tour: ENCOUNTERS: SOMEONE'S ALWAYS WAITING... by Sumana Khan

Encounters
Someone's Always Waiting...by Sumana Khan

Blurb ENCOUNTERS is a potpourri of five sumptuous stories involving a motley crew of protagonists. Skating along the borders of fantasy and paranormal themes, the stories track incredible and poignant journeys of self-discovery, tracing the cathartic aftermath of fleeting encounters.

MY REVIEW
Disclaimer: I was lucky enough to receive a paperback version of this book from the publishers, via The Book Club, in return for my honest review.
I have read Sumana Khan’s first book The Revenge of Kaivalya and loved it. I am not a fan of the horror genre, but so enjoyed this book despite that. So, when her second book came up for blog tour with #TBC, I immediately signed up for the review. And am I glad!
We face desperate moments in our lives. We, as people, or sometimes even the spirits that have not found their way back home. Is it possible for this desperation to boomerang into the universe that brings back messages in different forms, solving our issues for us? It seems so when your read these five short stories or should I say “novellas” by Sumana Khan. When the mind seeks a solution, it sometimes comes in a supernatural form. And why not? Just because logic does not accept it, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist.
Yes, I am completely fascinated by this premise, especially when it brings forth positive solutions.
First Love
Dr. Ratnaveni is thirty-two. She’s highly educated, has a successful career and is regarded with great respect as the youngest head of Forensics in the whole country. On her birthday, instead of exulting in this, her parents are terribly upset that she’s still single. They are ashamed that their only daughter is not married and given them grandchildren. Does it matter that she’s happy? Not at all! The bottom line is that they are ashamed of her.
I was Dr. Ratnaveni Madhehalli Kamat, university gold medallist, India’s youngest award-winning forensic analyst, the only woman to have access to the country’s most secure crime databases-and all my parents saw in me was failure”.
My heart wept for Ratna. But then, there are so many like her living amidst us.
They see me as a dishonourable, incomplete entity, who must be lassoed viciously, brought back into the pen, made complete by a man and a life-role that is deemed honourable for a woman.”
Was I just a pair of breasts and a womb to everyone?
Powerful words, hard hitting. And Vrka comes into Ratna’s life. Who’s he? Is he for real or is he a figment of her imagination? Is he a human being or a wolf or an alien? Whatever he was, I fell in love with him, as did Ratna.
This is the best story of this lot and gave me such goose-bump moments that it took me a while to begin reading the next one.
The Storyteller
This one is about Murugan Sundaresan’s story narrated in first person. Murugan is an agarbatti salesman who’s doing very well career wise. On this Christmas day, after the heavy sales at Velankanni church, he rides his two-wheeler back home to Mayiladuthurai. Every detour he makes, he lands up in heavy traffic. In a fit of desperation, Murugan decides to take a rarely travelled route via Karaikkal. The road is quite dilapidated and is the reason for lack of traffic.
But it looks like fate has ordained him to take that particular route on that Christmas day. It’s late in the night when he meets Raman Durai (the storyteller) sitting all by himself outside a shanty. Raman stops Murugan and asks him to stay a while to listen to his story – the story of Thirukadal– while they have dinner.
Murugan stays back to listen, fascinated by the story Raman weaves...
The tsunami scene has been described so perfectly. I heard a friend of mine talk about the sea going way back not far from her house. The fate of the locals and the way Raman works at bringing peace with Murugan’s help touched my heart. Beautiful!
Reminiscence
This is Raghavan’s story and is a simple and sweet one. He’s retired and is living in a small house along with his wife Radha. He’s lying on his bed ruminating about his married life over thirty-five years and what a wonderful and thrifty wife he has...
Well written and good story.
Happiness Clinic
Sheshadri has retired from his 45-year-old job as an accountant and is at home. He’s sick and tired of the suggestions given by his family and friends on how he could improve his life. Slowly, but steadily, his temper blows out of control until one day, he shames himself and his near & dear by shouting at everyone in a marriage hall.
Shaken, he leaves the hall all by himself, to walk back home. Because of the sudden torrential rain, Sheshadri is forced to take shelter under an awning of an old, dilapidated building. It’s the call of fate, of course. That’s where he meets his namesake, Dr. Sheshadri, a psychiatrist who runs Happiness Clinic. It’s the first time Sheshadri is able to connect with another human being (?). Read the story to find out how his life is transformed.
I loved this one and could absolutely relate to it.
Best Friends Forever
This is the story of Prerna and her best friend Alice. Something is wrong with Prerna AKA Pammi and her parents are upset. She used to be ill as a kid because of the trauma she suffered at her grandmother’s hands. But later, she had healed. But it looked like the problem has come back after seventeen years when Prerna faints at her place of work.
Who is Alice? Is she a hallucination or is she for real? Will Dr. Srinidhi be able to help Prerna?
I don’t want to say more to avoid giving out spoilers. But this is another one that brought out the goose-bumps in me.
A lovely set of stories by Sumana Khan. If you like to read about the supernatural, then DON’T MISS this one.
After at least a decade, I managed to finish reading a book at one sitting. Need I say more!

Blog Tour: A DOG EAT DOG-FOOD WORLD by C. Suresh

A Dog Eat Dog-Food World
by C. Suresh
A Fablery Publication

MY REVIEW

Disclaimer: I received a PDF format of this book from the author via The Book Club in return for my honest review.
The book is an impressive effort by C. Suresh to ridicule the way marketing functions in our world. The story follows the life of Spike, a hypochondriac. He has a doctor on call round the clock. His wife is fed up of his imaginary illnesses. Unable to take it anymore, the doctor and Mrs. Fortune come up with an idea – to get Spike busy.
That’s when the good doctor suggests that Spike starts his own business. Energised by the idea of losing money, Spike gives his nephew Jerry the shock of his life the next morning when he insists that Jerry “find him a business”.
After being chased by dogs within an inch of his life, Jerry comes up with a “brilliant” business plan – to sell dog food. And pseudo history begins...
The book has been written in excellent, flawless English and makes for an interesting read, funny most of the time.
What I couldn’t relate to was the way the author is “telling” the story as it’s mostly a narration. I found that a bit odd for a work of fiction.

Anyone who is a fan of PG Wodehouse will enjoy reading this book.

Blurb

A hilarious pseudo-history of marketing management, which explicitly denies resemblance to any actual history, and which will be horrified if some semblance be found. ‘A dog eat dog-food world’ is the story of a man who discovered that the path of life is strewn with treadmills and, if you get on one by mistake, you could keep running all your life to stay in the same place. The story of how just minding your own business can lead to unexpected consequences, guided by the ‘invisible hand’ of long dead economists. Anything you learn from the book – be it the basics of marketing management or a satirical view of Society – you do at your own risk.

The tale only dogs the doings of Spike Fortune who only sought to feed dogs and Jerry Fortune who, being fortuneless, gets dragged helter-skelter by his uncle Spike’s careening pursuit of commercial success; Spike’s rival Tom Rich, who is unwillingly dragged into upstaging Spike and tries to do it by teasing the palates of cats, helped by the bumbling efforts of his nephew, Jasper Rich who would rather be chasing girls than chasing cats.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fiction has been an addiction but the need to make a living took Suresh through Chemical Engineering and a PGDM at IIM-Bangalore and, from thence, to a long 16 year stint in the area of finance with specific expertise in fertilizer subsidies and a further two years as consulting expert in the same area. That, in his words, about sums up the boring part of his life, except for the people he was privileged to meet.

Otherwise, he can be described as a mess of contradictions – a bookworm but avid trekker; alone but never lonely; enjoys solitude but loves company; lazy but a perfectionist, the litany is endless. Trekking, which side-tracked him from the writing for which he quit his job, is a major passion and he does, at least, one trek in the Himalayas every year in addition to numerous local treks.

He reignited his passion for writing with a fairly popular blog www.jambudweepam.blogspot.in. The blog has been rated among the Top 5 humour blogs in India, twice in succession - in 2014 and 2015 - by BlogAdda, and has also been listed third among the Top Humour Blogs by Baggout.

He also has a short story published in a collection “Uff Ye Emotions” and has edited and written a novelette in an ebook anthology “Sirens spell danger”

Blog Tour: RUKHSAT THE DEPARTURE by Sujit Banerjee

RUKHSAT THE DEPARTURE  BY  SUJIT BANERJEE
Blurb  Where a story stops, another one begins. The thing with them is, they never walk alone. They always walk with a group of friends. Each reaches its own climax. Then with a final gasp of mortality and despair, fade away. No, they never die, they multiply. To the extent that the original gets lost and new ones are born. Over and over again. Yes, they get lost. No, they never die. They live on, permanently etched in the book of time. And from there, we borrow them and bring them alive. Again. And again. Here are twenty six of them, some standing alone and some chatting up with their long lost friends. When they depart, they leave a lingering fragrance of nostalgia and curiosity. What happened then?
Twenty-six alphabets, twenty-six names, and twenty-six short stories. Each exploring one unique emotion, taking you into the dark recess of the mind. Some frothy and most of them dark. Most standing alone and some facing a mirror, where the same story comes alive in two different ways, through two different protagonist . Meet myriad characters - from the single-minded prostitute to the man on the railways station bereft of any memory; a woman desperate for a biological child to a dead man's trial. Meet a jealous lover with a twisted brain and a gay man's memory of a one-night encounter. Meet twenty-six such characters arrested and sentenced for life inside the pages of a book. Each one leaving an indelible mark on your soul.

Meet the Cast
Abhimanyu – In the Beginning
I felt the poison of anger raging around me, inside me, pulsating like an entity; anger at the one who betrayed and the one who took advantage of this betrayal. The anger of not being able to stop both. Then the flash of knife and the flowing blood, shimmering in the flames of the torches inside the chamber. Screams followed by hushed voices; bodies being dragged down a flight of stairs. The sound of digging and burying. Later, ruins all around as empires fell and one intrigue chased another through time while swords sliced and arrows whiz past, seeking hearts. Who was I and what was all this about? Why were most of the images that flitted through my head always dark and tinged with red? Rarely, very rarely were they warm and loving. So rarely were they, ever like the sun shining on a cold and shivering memory.

It has taken me all over the world including places you would have never heard of. Eh? How about Tlacotalpan? It’s in Mexico.

My first story was published in a magazine when I was seventeen. The Editor made such a hash of it that I stopped sending out my stories but I continued writing. Then I broke my heart and started writing poems; first in Hindi and then in English. All personal collection. They still remain personal. I do shudder when I read some of them! Then the short stories came back and written over two years - now is a collection.

For Laksha, life is a gift wrapped in red ribbon. But that's all shattered when she falls for a misogamist. His ambivalence and vacillation always keeps her at bay, turning her into a neurotic. She gets betrayed by the most credible, loses her job, feels devastated and dejected as incidents crowd upon her corrupting her naivete.

Enigmas unfold revealing every glitch. Who will clear her blurred skies? What invigorates her career and life? Will she ever forgive her beloved? And how will Laksha survive?

The story also revolves around her rapport with Pallavi, a childhood friend and the relationship she has with her silver-tongued mom. Focusing on how experiences change perception of little things, this contemporary tale gives a better meaning to friendships, relationships, solitude, pain, compassion and success.

More often than not, Life drags you down to the adversities and thrusts outward to shine. It is your grit that truly matters when you reach rock bottom, and left with no choice other than to pick yourself up and leap forward, however arduous it may be!

Meera Sagar had everything—the perfect job as a principal ballerina (for a prestigious New York ballet company) and a man who loved her as much as she loved him. But tragedy struck on the night
before her biggest performance, forcing her to do the one thing she never wanted to do—come back home. To Mumbai.

Now, a year later, Meera is still trying to pick up the pieces, while fending off marriage proposals from her well-meaning but traditional Gujarati family, and figure life out all over again. By starting a ballet school in Mumbai. But she has two problems. One, she doesn’t know anything about running a business. And two, she can’t dance. Not anymore.

Enter . . .
Abeer Goswami. Hotshot junior partner at a South Bombay law firm and a man nursing a broken heart. When he meets Meera again, the woman who left him, he tries his hardest to be her friend, to help her . . . and not let the past get in the way.

And then . . .
There is the sexy Zoya Sehgal. Meera’s only friend in the city and the woman Abeer is currently seeing. They say triangles have pointy edges, for a reason. Will Meera find a new dream in her ballet school? Can Abeer and Meera find their way back to each other again? And, most important, has Meera danced for the last time?

With you I dance is a warm, funny, at times heart-rending, love story of second chances, true love, and finding yourself when your dearest dream has vanished.

And in 2014, her short story "Post-Coital Cigarette" was chosen to be part of the Rupa Romance Anthology "An Atlas of Love" curated by bestselling author Anuja Chauhan.

Her latest novel "Kingdom Come" (Harlequin MIRA) has enjoyed a brief stay at the bestseller lists in Amazon India. Her work is represented by Red Ink Literary Agency, Delhi. And very recently, she was a speaker and panellist at the Goa Arts and Literary Fest 2014, Vth Edition.
