Purity

Nehemiah 12:30 And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.

What is purity? Purity is singleness. Singleness in vision, in inspiration and in our insights. Purity is also about light – the very opposite of darkness. Purity is the very hatred of all that is evil and dark. Singleness is different from all that is diluted or plural. The truth is that God’s children are narrow … they are severely limited in what they can or should do because they love it to be so. Purity does not mean we do not err at times, but it understands that our stains can be cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ.

God’s children do the right thing not because they fear aids, hell or disgrace – but because God has given them His love of purity and they have no joys anymore in evils. It does not matter how you feel – if there is a revulsion for sin in all its guises, be assured that God has given you His best gift already – His purity, Christ. When Christ is in you, you will make all required adjustments to be what God wants you to be.

Purity is love. God’s love is love of truth – unconditional yet it is so vast in depth and breadth – but God has hatred for evil …He hated Esau even from the womb. The purity that is God’s love also means His hatred for lies and that which is evil is equally vast, deep and unconditional. The priests and Levites purified themselves, the people, the gates and the wall.

To purify yourself means to dedicate to God’s use alone. It means to put in God’s hand and accept God’s will over a matter. Even objects can be purified, like our Children and possessions … even our business.

Why do we purify ourselves – because only purity can come before God …either here or in eternity. Be single minded.

Jas_4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Malachi 3:3; Hebrews 12:14

Thoughts for Business and the work place

Be careful to always retain the singleness of your focus and vision.

Suggestions for Prayer

Lord, help me love what you love with a perfect love and to hate what you hate with a perfect hatred. Amen

Sons of the Singers

Nehemiah 12:28 And the sons of the singers gathered themselves together, both out of the plain country round about Jerusalem, and from the villages of Netophathi; 29 Also from the house of Gilgal, and out of the fields of Geba and Azmaveth: for the singers had builded them villages round about Jerusalem.

The sons of the singers came together … for they had villages round about Jerusalem. Unity is important especially for those ministering unto God. How beautiful it is when people dwell together in unity.

Psalm 133:1 A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

There is an environment on which the blessing of God can descend and there is another. Round about Jerusalem, were singers … their villages were surrounding Jerusalem; Praise goes with unity and unity goes with praise. For there to be unity, there must be a coming out to a designated place. People can come out of different places, but they must gather to the same destination … God has called us out darkness to His marvelous light. His light. My prayer is that we will be gathered to light, but not without our agreement to leave what must be abandoned.

Also true saints, gather round each other with love – to raise the fallen, to cheer the desolate, to bring succor to the suffering … there is a sense of safety we should have …knowing that we are protected , when we are in a family. That is because we know that we are safe…protected by the unity of God’s people … who together will uphold us. Where there are strange mixtures of doctrines … you can be sure that God will be absent, and even if there is a unity – the unity will not be of God. Where there has not been a gathering out unto God … be sure it is nothing but nonsense. I was at a gathering where Christians gathered – just as the world gathered, doing exactly what the godless do …there was no difference between Christians and non-Christians …the heathens mixed perfectly and everything – clothing, singing …it was impossible to know which were the Christians. There was no gathering out …just a blend. Be sure that when God named His Church, it meant … “called out” … Are you in the gathering of the called out? The gates of hell cannot prevail against God’s called out. God Himself surrounds His church and keeps it safe – not any man or person.

Mat_16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Jdg_7:23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.

Psalm 34:3; Ephesians 4:3

Thoughts for Business and the work place

Know that you are different, and will always be God’s unique jewel … but you shine in unity with others.

Gladness

Nehemiah 12:27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps.

God loves gladness. How He loves to see us full of His joy. We can only dedicate things to Him with gladness and not with murmurings. I sense the devil knows this and so he fosters situations that cause strife and murmurings. The noise of singing, cymbals and instruments rendering melody loudly with joy brings a smile to His lips. Gladness is not a thrill or a reaction to something we perceive as positive … rather it is a reaction to sensing God in our situation that gives us a joy that the world has never known or discovered.

Psa_122:1 A Song of degrees of David. I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.

When we discover this gladness, we are no more enamored with what the world offers …its acceptance, approval becomes irrelevant. When we have this gladness, earth’s woes cannot derail us nor can we be carried away by worldly thrills. We have a satisfaction from heaven …tapping from the all-sufficient one. Nothing … absolutely nothing moves us. We yearn to praise and worship God … we love Him … we cannot get enough of Him. This gladness is a stranger to the heathen, unknown to the idolater, taken from the blackslider and far from our best earthly amusements.

Jdg_18:20 And the priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

Verses for further meditation

Psalm 97:8; Acts 2:26

Thoughts for Business and the work place

Do not let anyone steal your joy. Get back your gladness and thank God for a great day

Suggestions for Prayer

Lord, keep me rejoicing …keep me singing … keep me dancing unto you. Amen

Names, Family and Roles

Nehemiah 12:26 These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of Ezra the priest, the scribe.

The word of God in the book of Nehemiah is full of names, family and their roles. God knows us by name. He calls us by that which we understand as ours and we respond. When Christ called out Lazarus, only one Lazarus came out of the grave. God knows how to get our attention …He can use a burning bush or can keep us awake at night pondering over a call we heard … like Samuel. God places us in a family. A family is a place where we can be nurtured, unconditionally accepted, honored and helped. The gift of family is so dear … so expensive …to have a true father, to have children, to have brothers and sisters who will be there around you … this is not to be taken for granted. How the devil plots to destroy the family … so the children can drift aimlessly and wastefully in all directions. But perhaps most important … God has a role for each of us … a purpose, a reason for our existence. Our role, be it governor, priest or scribe is noted in God’s book of divine records. Indeed, there is a reward for the leadership we give in the name of Christ, there is a reward for our labours and a reward for our intercession.

We are in a time where anything goes. People write what they like, govern anyhow and believe anything …there are no standards … everyone does as he or she pleases, but God does not forget His own, who He has called by name and given unique instructions, His priests …

You may think you are doing all in vain, but you are not. God sees and He notes it all. I sense somewhere in eternity, our parts will be replayed in a flash. I pray we shall not be ashamed when that day comes.

Lord, help me to play my part right.

Isa_61:6 But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.

Verses for further meditation

Luke 1:48; Malachi 3:12

Thoughts for Business and the work place

Your calling is a sure calling. Do not imagine you will fail at what God has helped you to do. Be strong in what God has called you to.

Suggestions for Prayer

Lord, Help me and keep shame far from my me. Amen

Gates

Nehemiah 12:25 Mattaniah, and Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub, were porters keeping the ward at the thresholds of the gates.

Lets talk about gates again. Because it is so important to know its role. God wants us to be on our guard. The enemy can strike at any time … we should be watchful at platforms that He will want to use. The porters played a very important role in protecting the city and not permitting any improper movements in or out. We should always be on our guard at situations that can provide access into our destiny to destabilize us. These can be subtle. The baby Jesus was hidden from Herod, not because God could not protect Him, but because God had elected that Christ be hidden at that particular time. It takes sensitivity to understand how God is working with us and when He is hiding us from evils. The most important gate is that which guards our heart … we must not be taken by surprise by lurking evil motives of revenge and envy.

Ask God even before you go to the obvious places… be careful of events that you have not checked with God. Know that the enemy is always looking for ways to humiliate and destroy your future or destiny. Be strong only when you know that your guard is up … praying without ceasing actually means do not ever let your guard down … not for a brief moment. Be sober, be vigilant … be moderate …be self-controlled.

Psalm_141:3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Verses for further meditation

Thoughts for Business and the work place

Your careless moments are costly moments. Be watchful.

Praise and Thanks

Nehemiah 12:24 And the chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over against them, to praise and to give thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, ward over against ward.

The old time preacher will say that God’s food is thanksgiving and praise. He does not need anything else, and has resources beyond our imagination to deploy to achieve His purposes – even and especially without us. But still, He wants us to praise Him … and His dealings with us are often not understood until we know that He wants His name magnified … it’s about God. There are many ways of hoarding the praise that belongs to God. One way is to depend on our intellect, on what we can sense and understand and not on God’s word. Our times of communion become less and God gradually withdraws His counsel from us … we can succeed …but God is far … and we do not sense that thanksgiving goes to God who gave us everything, even our brains. Have we not seen people who lost all their senses in seconds without explanation? When last did you thank God because you could raise a finger …or because you could still taste your food. There are many who have lost the sense of taste …or need help to nod their heads.

Nehemiah ensured that praise and thanksgiving continually went to God over every family. We can praise God with instruments, voice and posture …shouting alleluias before the Almighty …but the most important instrument of praise is the life that pleases God. Search your life today for areas that may still be displeasing to God and make the needed adjustments. Check that your heart is not closed or hardened – no more responding to His leadings.

God is moved to do awesome things as we praise Him

2Ch_20:22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

Verses for further meditation

1 Chronicles 29:13 ; Psalm 107:8

Thoughts for Business and the work place

God wants everything to praise Him … even our business and ventures.

Suggestions for Prayer

Lord, may all that we do, think or say – give you praise. Amen

Chief of the Fathers

Nehemiah 12:22 The Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua, were recorded chief of the fathers: also the priests, to the reign of Darius the Persian. 23 The sons of Levi, the chief of the fathers, were written in the book of the chronicles, even until the days of Johanan the son of Eliashib.

Many criticize the word of God as biased to favor the masculine gender. But God does not answer to the yearnings of our culture, but the true needs of our souls. The role of families is so pivotal in the word of God, and the father has a major part to play to ensure families turn out right. The fathers must provide leadership in the family … not as bullies …but as men under accountability before God. Priests were over the fathers to teach them, to show them the expectations of God. Fathers were under the influence of intensive teachings and spiritual guidance so that all would be well in the land.

I pray you will understand this important aspect of Christian life. Modernity has belittled fatherhood as weak, wicked and oppressive and women have been encouraged to rise up and be independent. Sexual variants have been institutionalized to cripple normal family life …the main objective is to remove fathers from being able to perform their roles in normal domestic situations. Christ must be the head of the home, but He leads through fathers who are to love unconditionally …especially when situations challenge that love. It helps to respect leadership … when leaders are respected, the weight on their shoulders are lightened and they are able to joyfully do that which they were created to do. Fathers also have to be taught the importance of discipline and how to chasten when required.

Heb_12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Verses for further meditation

Deuteronomy 4:9 ;Luke 15:22

Thoughts for Business and the work place

Strong leadership is not just for men, but God has crafted unique roles in genders. Do not confuse them.

Suggestions for Prayer

Lord, give us fathers according to thy word. Amen

Procession of Priests

Nehemiah 12:1 Now these are the priests and the Levites that went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra, 2 Amariah, Malluch, Hattush, 3 Shechaniah, Rehum, Meremoth, 4 Iddo, Ginnetho, Abijah, 5 Miamin, Maadiah, Bilgah, 6 Shemaiah, and Joiarib, Jedaiah, 7 Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, Jedaiah. These were the chief of the priests and of their brethren in the days of Jeshua. 8 Moreover the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, which was over the thanksgiving, he and his brethren. 9 Also Bakbukiah and Unni, their brethren, were over against them in the watches. 10 And Jeshua begat Joiakim, Joiakim also begat Eliashib, and Eliashib begat Joiada, 11 And Joiada begat Jonathan, and Jonathan begat Jaddua. 12 And in the days of Joiakim were priests, the chief of the fathers: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah; 13 Of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan; 14 Of Melicu, Jonathan; of Shebaniah, Joseph; 15 Of Harim, Adna; of Meraioth, Helkai; 16 Of Iddo, Zechariah; of Ginnethon, Meshullam; 17 Of Abijah, Zichri; of Miniamin, of Moadiah, Piltai; :18 Of Bilgah, Shammua; of Shemaiah, Jehonathan; 19 And of Joiarib, Mattenai; of Jedaiah, Uzzi; 20 Of Sallai, Kallai; of Amok, Eber; 21 Of Hilkiah, Hashabiah; of Jedaiah, Nethaneel.

The names of priests are mentioned. There is a procession of priests that followed Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel led the first group of Jews, numbering over 42,000, who returned from the Babylonian Captivity in the first year of Cyrus, King of Persia. There can be no restoration if the priests are not restored. I pray for revival and may it start in His Church.

When we pray for Revival, the concern is about God’s people, His chosen ones who have abandoned the narrow way …who have replaced the word with lies, who seek and rejoice in material things and not God. God’s people who have been lured away by wolves in sheep’s clothing …who have long been seduced by entertainment and motivational talks and have long abandoned the truths of scriptures. Today is a good day to pray for Revival. Pray for your pastor, your leader, your overseer, your bishop …they must be revived, woken up or millions will waste in perdition … in a wicked captivity. I pray that this year there will be an awesome revival of Godliness, truth … souls coming back …leaders confessing witchcraft and a return to God that has never been imagined – starting with the shepherds that have long gone astray.

May this restoration and revival begin with you. When the priests come up to God again …when the church rediscovers its mandate of being the salt and light. Then the walls have been built and God’s people will return in their millions to their inheritance … rediscovering a beautiful destiny. The people will be prepared for Christ’s return, and the ultimate procession …the rapture of the saints. Zerubbabel represents Jesus Christ …His saints are His priests who come up with Him to an eternal glory. May you not be absent from this procession for anything the earth has to offer.

Verses for further meditation

Isaiah 43:6 ; Genesis 49:18

Thoughts for Business and the work place

Without true Revival in God’s Church, little can change for the better in the market place.

Suggestions for Prayer

Lord, send revival … send revival to your people. Amen

Outside Jerusalem

Nehemiah 11:36 And of the Levites were divisions in Judah, and in Benjamin

This verse means that there were some Levites who were not resident in Jerusalem i:e. some who were not resident in Jerusalem were distributed in settlements throughout the provinces of Judah and Benjamin.

Jerusalem is a type representing the place of the presence of God. There are many good places to be, and God is generous in His provisions, but the Levites were a tribe of priests and they were to be settled in Jerusalem because of their temple priestly duties. The Bible says we are kings and priests …we are His Levites. We cannot afford to be placed in a state of distance from God for any reason.

When David had to flee Jerusalem because of the rebellion of Absalom … what he missed was not the royal accommodations, but the place of worship, the sense of being close to God – the ark of God in Jerusalem …where he praised God. Indeed we are not bound to physical locations and physical objects, but we can find ourselves in scenarios when we stop a lifestyle of worship – and begin to live for our own pleasure. Check your heart. Have you found yourself prospering so well but in your conscience you fear God is far. I pray this is not you … and if it is, you can retrace your steps and find out what caused your new distance from God. When last did you make a joyful offering unto the Lord. When last did you dance such that you looked ridiculous.? When last did you wait all night on the Lord? When last did you spend days fasting and praying and singing unto God? These are not rituals … God has ordained that we worship Him in Spirit and in Truth and prescribed how in His holy book.

You may be far from your physical place of worship for good reasons but your heart sings gloriously unto the Lord. You may live next to your local church but when last did you hear from God. Today is a good day to come back to God.

Verses for further meditation

2 Samuel 15:25 ; Deuteronomy 11:16

Thoughts for Business and the work place

God’s leaders carry God’s presence with them to the market place

Suggestions for Prayer

Lord, do not let me in the place or situation where your divine presence will be far from me. Amen

The Valley of Craftsmen

Nehemiah 11:35 Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen.

God mentions and draws attention to a location which is called the “Valley of Craftsmen” – a valley speaks of a low place, where people were skilled, learned in using their hands to make things. A place of craftsmen. God recognizes craftsmanship. He respects skills and honors talents applied to His divine purposes. But this is also a valley. There are many who have given themselves to sharpen their skills, invested years in mastering their craft, but it seems the indolent prosper on the mountains … succeeding in their clever manipulations.

Isa_40:4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

God will soon exalt the valley …and your diligence will be rewarded. Even as you have bowed your skills to the word and laws of God, your faithfulness at your ordained skill set, is not unnoticed. Be not ashamed of the small beginning and the humble habitations … for God will raise you up. When you come up again, do not forget that it was the Lord that made you, that raised you …the one that helped you. Do not let your heart be lifted up to your destruction and do not begin to do evil, when you are now full and strong.

If you have no skills, you can apply yourself to develop one. Find an area in which you can devote time, resources and for which you may need to deny yourself some leisure. Go to a school or college, take an exam to perfect your craft and have your mastery accredited. I sense someone reading this devotional needs to be woken up from idleness. Go back to the valley of craftsmen, the place of your future exaltation. The place of wells of springing water. The challenges will not last. God, according to His word, values His craftsmen. Go and dig.

Gen_26:19 And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

Verses for further meditation

Psalm 23:4 ; 2 Kings 24:14

Thoughts for Business and the work place

Skills take time to develop. Craftsmen are cherished in thriving societies. This is also God’s way.

Suggestions for Prayer

Lord, teach me use my hands and be diligent in the areas you have chosen for me. Take me out of the Valley. Amen
