People of the Villages
Nehemiah 11:25 And for the villages, with their fields, some of the children of Judah dwelt at Kirjatharba, and in the villages thereof, and at Dibon, and in the villages thereof, and at Jekabzeel, and in the villages thereof, 26 And at Jeshua, and at Moladah, and at Bethphelet, 27 And at Hazarshual, and at Beersheba, and in the villages thereof, 28 And at Ziklag, and at Mekonah, and in the villages thereof, 29 And at Enrimmon, and at Zareah, and at Jarmuth, 30 Zanoah, Adullam, and in their villages, at Lachish, and the fields thereof, at Azekah, and in the villages thereof. And they dwelt from Beersheba unto the valley of Hinnom. 31 The children also of Benjamin from Geba dwelt at Michmash, and Aija, and Bethel, and in their villages, 32 And at Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, 33 Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, 34 Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat,
Rural life does not have to be unbearable. There is a simplicity and charm that can only be found in villages. But villages should have basic amenities, and people should not all flock to live in overcrowded cities. Country homes should bloom with small cottages as people live in contentment. It is a good thing to have rising urbanization but there is a beauty and peace to small villages with all the infrastructure that makes life worth living. There were those in the times of Nehemiah who settled in villages and these villages were well cared for.
We pray that God will help us raise leaders who will make village life bearable, peaceful, healthy and who will understand that there is a joy in simple living. The scripture described many that dwelt in their villages peacefully and joyfully. There are many that should return to their villages to be useful in the hands of God even in those villages where they will live peaceful, satisfied lives in the provision of God. Overcrowded cities result in many slums, crime and unemployment when there are fields in the villages waiting to be ploughed.
Villages in Bible times were also unwalled suburbs outside the walled towns, villages which often depended on the cities for their defense and sustenance.
Our God is the God of villages and cities and He has His people in the villages as well. Being in the village is not a curse. Be blessed, nurtured and divinely defended -wherever God has positioned you. In locating industry, do not forget the villages – God has a work even in those humble parts and may want to use you.

People Matters
Nehemiah 11:24 And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabeel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king’s hand in all matters concerning the people.
Our God is a God of people …not a God of rules and regulations. People can be very unique in their issues and challenges and their matters are important to God’s leaders. Listening to people and being concerned with their troubles is a sign of God given leadership. Because our businesses can grow so much, we can lose touch with the people. Therefore, we must appoint leaders who will be close to the people and bring back their matters for resolution. These must not be leaders like Absalom who will turn the people away from their king, but leaders who will represent the king well and bring counsel that help the people.
This verse reminds us that ALL matters concerning the people were adequately addressed by counsel and responsible leadership. Today, we talk of human capital management – In the day of Nehemiah, God ordained special leaders for people matters. In government we would have a home secretary or minister of the interior or whatever title to focus on the welfare, safety and needs of people – especially the less advantaged, the aged, the infirmed and the youth. God cares for people and so should we.
Leadership that destroys people is demonic. Judas was under the management of satan and see what happened to him. Absalom corrupted the role of being a helper to David on people matters, being so charismatic, he would have filled a void that David could not fill … but the devil led him astray … and see how he eventually ended.
Reflect on the parable of the good Samaritan …Christ teaches us about caring and loving our neighbors. Do not be caught in the cut-throat ways of the market place. Indeed you should not copy their evil ways of staying ahead.
Verses for further meditation
Luke 10:34 ; 2 Cor 8:16
Thoughts for Business and the work place
A good leader looks after people matters. Demonic leadership is associated with corruption of people management. God has not appointed you as a tyrant or an unfaithful spy to misrepresent God and men before the people.
Suggestions for Prayer
Lord, teach me how to look after your people. Amen

Divine Provisions
Nehemiah 11:23 For it was the king’s commandment concerning them, that a certain portion should be for the singers, due for every day.
When God issues a command it must be so. Does it not surprise us that ravens brought bread to Elijah by the brook during the drought or that a widow could be raised to feed him. God does not abandon His officers to suffer hunger. Be assured that He will take care of you – even in the lion’s den of politics and corporate intrigues. He will provide not just sustenance but divine wisdom, divine preservation, divine health and divine strength. His provisions are daily and inexhaustible. Fearful man, why do you worry that yesterday’s provisions appear diminished and insufficient – when we have an all-sufficent God who daily loads us with all manner of benefits.
God has commanded that you should be specially taken care of. That is your portion as God’s officer in the market place. It does not matter the economic season … He is a great provider and when He commands provisions, the windows of heaven open and ministering angels do His bidding.
Note in the scripture, that there is a special reservation to be made daily for God’s man or woman. Therefore expect daily miracles of provision as you go about leading God’s business – doing His work of building and restoration. Remember that the enemy has his own daily provisions too. Be like Daniel. Reject what the devil offers.
Dan 1:5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
Dan 1:6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
Dan 1:7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
Dan 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Verses for further meditation
1 Timothy 5:8 ; Matthew 45: 21-25
Thoughts for Business and the work place
A good leader makes adequate provisions for those who serve him. Evil leadership cannot provide for their own household and less so for others who work for them.
Suggestions for Prayer
Lord, thank you for your daily provisions. Keep me faithful in your service. Amen

The Business of God
Nehemiah 11:22 The overseer also of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micha. Of the sons of Asaph, the singers were over the business of the house of God.
Every business has its own assets, staff, vision, objectives, goals and systems. Every business has ownership who have expectations from the venture. The Bible tells us that the earth is the Lord’s …God owns it all, not just your Church premises. God has expectations of the earth …He has His vision, to see salvation and restoration and His chosen reconciled to Him. He has His systems which you will discover in the word of God. You can do the business of God in your office or as a driver or even a governor in the politics. The business of God is not like your business and what you learnt at business school may be useful, but must bow to God’s manual – The Holy Scriptures.
Exo_5:17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD.
Pro_19:15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.
Mat_12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Meditate on the above scriptures concerning the idle. The idle are those engaged not in the business of God. Idleness does not mean we are not busy – but in scripture it points to the focus of our industry. If it is not God, then our words will be idle words … if it is not of God, our hectic schedule is as deep sleep. Our table may be full of the richest meats but our soul suffers hunger because we have no knowledge of the business of God. I took pains to explain that the business of God is not just church …though it must be part of it. We can do the business of God in the market place.
Singers were often over the business of God. Why? Singing speaks of faithfulness even when the odds are tough. It means responding to a heavenly tune when earth’s melody is hard and discordant.
Isa_54:1 Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
Those who cannot sing in the fire of earth’s trials and desolations cannot lead God’s business anywhere – least of all in the tough market place with all its evils. But God is a true deliverer and faithful.
Verses for further meditation
1 Timothy 5:13 ; Matthew 20: 3-6
Thoughts for Business and the work place
Faithful people are not common. When you find them, note that this is someone who can be trusted with God’s business in any scenario.
Suggestions for Prayer
Lord, deliver me from my many ventures in idleness. Come and fill my hungry soul. Amen

Nethinims
Nehemiah 11:21 But the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel: and Ziha and Gispa were over the Nethinims.
The Nethinims were not Israelites. They served as slaves because there were not enough Levites in the Temple. God also ensures they were catered for, but note that they did not live with God’s priests. There is a sense in which we are God’s slaves … completely given to Him, but there is a greater sense in which we are friends, called to a higher and holy calling, bearing greater responsibilities and spiritual burdens for God. There is a hierarchy for slaves which differs from that of priests. The Levites had an intimate knowledge and contact with God and His laws, and represented the people before God. The Nethinims served and did useful chores and made important contributions. But Jesus told Mary and Martha, that Mary had chosen a better part.
Mary sat and listened to Jesus as he talked, but Martha complained that she was left with all the work. Jesus admonished Martha not to worry about small things, but to concentrate on what was important. The important thing was to be at the feet of Jesus.
Do you sense that you are constantly located at the feet of Jesus, learning, hearing and becoming one with Him who dwells in you. Or are you burdened with many assignments.
Do not be so busy or caught up in doing things that you forget that you could be sitting at the feet of the master – even in the boardroom He speaks His truth and comfort. He is not absent at your meetings. Where are you?
Verses for further meditation
Luke 10 :38-42 ; John 12: 1-8
Thoughts for Business and the work place
Reflect on your positioning. It is best to be in Him – close to Him, rather than be engaged but far from Him. When you are tempted to cut corners or quick to justify vices in the market place, it suggest you are far from Him – even though you bring your tithes.
Suggestions for Prayer
Lord, bring me back to you from where I have strayed away. Keep me always close. Amen

The Residue
Nehemiah 11:20 And the residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, every one in his inheritance.
There is a residue of God. A people, a remnant who waited for God and received that which God had reserved for them. A residue means what is left. The residue is not the main part, often not the admired part, but in the eyes of God, an important part.
We often discount residue as worthless, but God assigns high value to those whom He has set aside for a holy and special purpose. After judgments, God raises up His own remnants. The remnant of Israel are those who rely upon the Lord alone. God assures His remnant not to be afraid of the Assyrians. I encourage you not to fear what men can do, or be shaken by the threats that assail your thoughts. Instead receive the comfort that comes to God’s remnant. Be assured, child of God, that your God is faithful to His remnant.
Did you not also read of the remnant …thousands of priests who refused to bow to Baal and whose mouths had not kissed him. God hid them and kept them safe and not Obadiah, the prophet in Ahab’s palace – It was God alone.
Perhaps the most remarkable remnant refers to the true Church, the body of Christ, chosen out of the millions who have lived and died over the centuries. Jesus made it clear that this remnant would be called out of the multitude by God … chosen by God and found faithful. They may not be many … “Many” end up in eternal destruction, but “few” will find eternal life .
In business, political leadership or even in your family, we are to live, lead and act as God’s few. Those chosen by God, different from the others, set apart for a special purpose. Have you found that purpose?

God has His own unique remnant even in the market place. They are His treasurers. They carry His light.

The Keeper of the Gates
Nehemiah 11:19 Moreover the porters, Akkub, Talmon, and their brethren that kept the gates, were an hundred seventy and two.
The counting continues, now the porters and the keepers of gates. Gates represent control into exits and entrances … admitting experiences into our lives as well as protecting us from incursions. Gates are important, but more so are the keepers and porters …guards and keepers to check and assist admissions or to fiercely resist entry.
But there is a keeper called the “Keeper of Israel” … His name is Jesus. He is omnipresent to keep us and our salvation till the very end. He is the one that works out the good, such that all things must work together for the good of them that love God and are called to His purpose. We need to surrender the gates to Him to whom it was referred and who says “lift up your heads, O ye gates and be ye lifted up ye everlasting doors …that the King of Glory may come in …who is the King of Glory … the Lord strong and mighty … the Lord mighty in battle….”
We must release the gates to Christ, drive off the strange porters and keepers we have erected in our minds and to die to self …like the grain of wheat that dies …only to abide in Christ’s fullness, no more alone.
Trusting God on a daily, moment by moment basis is to hand the gates of our lives over to Him. Then we will begin to experience His best. But we must be prepared to suffer with Him, trusting Him …to be expendable for God.

The Holy City
Nehemiah 11:18 All the Levites in the holy city were two hundred fourscore and four
The city being rebuilt was called a Holy City and it was filled with Levites i.e. priests. We know the holy city in the old testament is a type of the sanctified Church of Christ perfected in eternity. The city at the time was not very holy, it was barely a rabble of stones, yet it remains God’s illustration to let us see that He is able to raise a holy sanctified army out of ashes and stones.
Eze 37:1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, 2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. 3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. 4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. 8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them. 9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
Ezekiel sees a vision of how a mighty sanctified army will come out of a valley of dry bones. If you study the verses you will discover that the dead and dry bones could do nothing until verse 10 where “they stood up” … but that was only after prophesies and the breath of God came upon them representing the work of the Holy Spirit of God. But there is a standing up for Jesus …purifying yourself as God is pure.
Be encouraged and stand as the Holy Spirit comes upon you. God will do the work of grace that will bring a transformation from ashes to a sanctified city. Wherever we are, we should not forget our destiny and where we shall eventually be …
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. :3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Meditate on these verses. It is time to stand.

Thanksgiving in Prayer
Nehemiah 11:17 And Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, was the principal to begin the thanksgiving in prayer: and Bakbukiah the second among his brethren, and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.
Thanksgiving was so important, it seems this was a special assignment for which Mattaniah was the lead at times of prayer. Starting prayers with thanksgiving was not just tradition but it was understood that this was the way to get into the presence of God.
Psa_95:2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
It is easy to understand why a father prefers to receive a son full of gratitude rather than one who keeps coming back murmuring new requests. Gratitude for what God is … your loving father, for what He has done …for what He has not done … for what He will do …what He can do …indeed so many things to thank God for. The morning dew, the rising and setting sun …the rain that starts and stops et. Do you know what would happen if the sun rises and does not set, if the rain starts and does not stop …
Pause and spend an hour simply thanking Him.

Outward Business
Nehemiah 11:16 And Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the chief of the Levites, had the oversight of the outward business of the house of God
These priests handled business within the temple gates, secular concerns, serving of tables, administration etc. These roles are given special mention … so we appreciate that God is a God of order. He is not the God of confusion … clear roles are defined and properly separated. What is the value of separating the oversight of the devotional activities from the outward roles? There could be conflicts if roles are not properly separated …there would be distractions and lack of focus where roles are not properly defined appropriately.
Leaders also understand that much needs to be effectively delegated. Delegation is done only where clear guidelines and policies have been predefined to ensure there is clarity on what can be done and how to do it.
Moses was advised to do likewise (to appoint elders and assign roles/responsibilities) to spread the responsibilities of leadership … again this must be very carefully checked with God or it can be a subtle rebellion when supernatural strength of God has been made available.
