Secret of Prosperity

Gen 39:2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

Today, you can discover a secret. Something that is so powerful and true and will bless you. I refer to the secret of prosperity. God does not hate prosperity. Prosperity is not just about having billions. Rather, it is about thriving in the purpose of God – having peace in your body, soul and spirit. Having health and the mental clarity that all is well. Joseph no more lives in a tent and now lives in a house. He is no more a wandering herdsman, but he is now at some peace … this is a more luxurious pit. But his rest and peace do not come from Egypt. They come from the presence of God in his life. They come from another person living within him. God is with him to cause all that he does to prosper.

God with you implies, God directing you, God controlling you, God protecting you, God instructing you, God comforting you and also God providing for you. It means being dependent on God for everything. It does not mean calling on God when you perceive you have a need or invoking his presence through music or song. Rather, it suggests a continued presence that makes your worship different and your every moment special. Remember we speak of God and not a prophet, teacher or pastor. But God can be grieved – made sad by your dearest thoughts that exclude Him or your motivations which are primarily to satisfy self and the flesh.

God was not in Joseph’s life to lead him back to his family, although God knows the way back. Nor was God available to free him from the shackles of slavery in Potiphar’s house. When God is with us, it means we are free from Egypt and only remain because there is a higher purpose in God for it. It implies living and doing everything for a higher purpose, walking on a higher ground and seeing a higher perspective to everything although to everybody else Joseph, like Daniel was just like any other captive in a heathen culture. God with us means that we shine differently because in us, there is a light that shines.

Serving in the house of Potiphar is but another phase – and Joseph must see beyond this phase otherwise he will begin to covet the marble, art and the treasures that could one day be his … begin to notice more the women who now expose their flesh … the strange lustful laughter of Egypt and the alluring glances of Potiphar’s wife. God must help Joseph. God with us is God helping is us to stand in Him daily. The word of God is God. When we study and are filled with it – we have God with us. The word speaks to situations in our lives to always establish God’s higher purpose. When we are far from the word of God and we have not reflected on its admonitions and comfort, then we may not have God, rather we may still prosper – but a different type of prosperity. We then rely on our self to sustain what we have begun. In this devotional we see a different way to prosper driven by an inner richness. God with us. Can you say God is with you? God is far from the proud. Humble yourself.

Song.

I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?

Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine , O abide with me.

Words: Henry F. Lyte, 1847

Prayer: O Lord, do not permit me to stray into pride and lose your presence. Abide always with me. Amen

The Company of God

Gen 39:2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

What does it mean to always have the company of God? There are men who did so many great things and there are men who we are told walked with God. Enoch we are told walked with God … Joseph was like Enoch. He enjoyed the company of the most high even as most looked down on him as a Hebrew slave.

Amo 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

Having the company of God means to be agreed with God. It means to be on the highway that God walks. It does not mean things will be easy or that we can have whatever we lust for. It means we are protected … first and especially from ourselves and our decisions and from external troubles. It means we are comforted and there is an unseen hand that embraces us and wipes away our ears. It means we are covered under a pavilion of safety and hidden in the shadow of the Almighty. But to be agreed with God, we have to accept God’s terms. We cannot negotiate lower terms. Many call on the name of God but do not wish to walk with Him because they cannot be agreed with His terms. He has great expectations from those who walk with Him … they will not be allowed stray off … and can be expected to be swallowed by a whale if in disobedience. Others – he leaves alone.

The best illustration I find of the company of God is to be under a huge refreshing shadow of a mighty unseen being. Imagine an enemy coming to attack suddenly realizing a huge shadow of a mighty unseen presence. The shadow communicates the presence of an awesome defense system that causes trepidation and the enemy flees. The company of God implies the escort of innumerable host of angelic beings awaiting instructions to be executed immediately.

The company of God is an admission into the throne room. Everywhere a king is – no matter how humble – becomes an Imperial Palace. There is a glory that follows the King to defend Him and those in His company. There are chariots of fires and a fiery entourage that establish His majesty – dispensing judgments He permits.

When we have sensed the presence of God, we know that there is no superior experience we can ever have … we cannot go higher than the presence of God. We want to preserve the experience and we naturally live a life of worship. David wrote often that he was prepared to lose anything but the presence of God. He did not mind losing the throne of men and going on exile to the hills … but groaned in pain and sorrow whenever he sensed God was far from Him. God was with Joseph. Are you walking with God or just calling His name?

Song. (Chorus)

In the presence of Jehovah – God Almighty Prince of Peace

Troubles vanish – hearts are mended – In the presence of the King.

Troubles vanish – hearts are mended – In the presence of the King.

Prayer: O Lord, may I ever remain in your presence. Amen

Slave

Gen 39:1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.

God often does His work in stages, steps and processes. This is why we must trust Him fully – for we may not know at which stage or section of the process we are in. But we know that we can trust Him. Joseph is now in Egypt and he is initiated into a luxury, culture and beauty that must have completely stunned the Jew who only knew the tents of his fathers. The grandeur of ancient Egypt is unparalleled not only in beauty but in its advancements in medical and scientific feats. But the most seductive aspect of Egypt is its culture or what we call civilization.

The eyes of Joseph are opened to a completely different world with a different set of rules and traditions. He was purchased to be a slave of the Egyptian and so a slave of the Egyptian culture. But He also knew that he could not serve two masters. The God of His family that sold him out and the God of Pharaoh were irreconcilable. Their cultures were completely apart. Like Daniel, he purposed from day one not to defile himself … not to partake in the delicacies that the culture offered. Egypt has a lot to offer. Some that looks very harmless and a lot that is quite toxic and obviously undesirable.

There are little victories we must win before we will be permitted to fight the major bouts. If Joseph cannot survive in keeping himself as a slave, how will he cope if he becomes the Prime Minister. I pray that with this devotional God will help you to stay apart for the greater things He wants to do in your future. In the new culture, every day is a test. What we will say, not say. Do or not do. Egypt is a journey down but you do not have to come down … you can use it as Joseph did, an opportunity to grow even spiritually and come up even higher. Even in Egypt, you can excel.

Today reflect on men like Daniel who were able to shine in a very different culture. There is a Rock that is higher than I. O then to the Rock I fly.

You can decide today and make a quality decision to cling to the Rock and be unaffected by the culture.

Song.

O sometimes the shadows are deep, and rough seems the path to the goal,

and sorrows, sometimes how they sweep Like tempests down over my soul.

O then to the Rock, let me fly … To the Rock that is higher than I.

Words: Erastus Johnson, 1871

Prayer: O Lord, hold me in the confusion of the culture. Help me to be fastened to the Rock which cannot move. Amen.

Brought Down to Green Pastures

Gen 39:1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.

Often we are brought down … but only to achieve a vital correction or relocation to help us or to position us to be taken up again. Going down into a valley can be a very puzzling experience … especially when you can find no reason for the descent. Change Management experts have observed that crisis and indeed most change that end positively typically go through a pattern called the Change Curve. This essentially says we initially must go down to come up even stronger or higher. The challenge in managing a bringing down is not to panic but ensure the valley remains a place of hope and thanksgiving … and the valley is as shallow as possible and the time in it as minimal as needs to be. The desired outcome is to emerge to higher equilibrium as quickly as possible. We often find ourselves resistant to change, until God introduces some sort of crisis. Our initial equilibrium can be the “good” which is the enemy of the “best” that God sees ahead but needs a crisis to manifest. God wanted more for Job but Job was doing well …

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil. 2 And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 3 Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the East.

God introduces crisis otherwise Job would have been well contented to be the greatest of all men of the east. But the last chapter in Job’s life sees a man at a far higher level … more than double of where he started. The same was the experience of Joseph and Jacob … they went through many cycles of being brought down … always ending much higher than they began. Do not be afraid to lie down … for the pastures are green and the waters, quiet. The peace that God only can give in His own way … which the world cannot take away. Praise God.

Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Song.

The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want.

He makes me down to lie

In pastures green; He leadeth me

The quiet waters by.

Goodness and mercy all my life

Shall surely follow me;

And in God’s house forevermore

My dwelling place shall be.

Words: Scottish Psalter, 1650 .

Prayer: O Lord, let me see your goodness and mercy always following me through all my days. Amen.

Why Songs of Joseph?

Songs of JosephSome have asked  … why another devotional?  Songs of Joseph is an encouragement devotional primarily focused on presenting Christ – the Hope of the hopeless to the hurting, using the theme of the story of Joseph.  It was originally published in Dec 2012, and of all my previous other publications, this one was the one in which I received letters and feedback from people I had never met telling me how they were greatly blessed.

Mr Bolade Apampa, my brother-in-law , generously offered his time and impeccable language skills to edit it comprehensively pro bono and suggested it be put on a website on which many can access it globally at no cost.  January 2014 offered the opportunity to test for response, and we are able to track the views which have been quite encouraging.

One must admit that the devotional is a niche publication and not as encompassing in Christian teaching points as several other devotionals and we encourage it to be used to complement other popular and inimitable devotionals such as Spurgeons Daily Devotional and Open Heavens.

The Recessionproofchristianlife.com web site offers the possibility to subscribe to an e-mail version which will enable you to receive daily devotional text at no cost to your email address.   If you can afford it, you are encouraged to buy your own copy, available at RCCG Camp CRM bookshops (limited copies) and online bookshops …. AuthorhouseUK, AuthorhouseUS, Amazon.com , Amazon.co.uk etc.

2Co_1:4  Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Thank you for your prayers, subscription and recommendations to friends.  I also thank those who have sent me mail with suggestions and useful clarifications and hope my responses have been helpful.

The Scarlet Thread

Gen 38:27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. 28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. 29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez. 30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

The struggle for the birthright is again seen here as it was in the time of Jacob and Esau. These twins are products of an ungodly union … examples of grace and memorials to forgiveness and mercy. Judah was to be the ruling tribe and the Lion of Judah … Christ emerged as these sons are both named in His genealogy.

The first is marked with a scarlet thread. This points us again to Jesus and His destiny of a cruel crucifixion … His blood to be shed for our sins.

Christ is the first fruits of them that sleep … Rev 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

After the resurrection of Christ, when he returns at the rapture, the dead in Christ will rise and then others will join Him … but the first begotten of the dead … the first to taste death and to live never to die again was the one who washed our sins with His own blood. This is the significance of the scarlet thread. By the blood, grace and mercy comes to us in a completely new way that even cause angels to marvel. These twins being in the genealogy are expressions of God’s great grace. Marvel at the grace through Christ Jesus and the work that His blood did … washing us from our sins. When the saints are breaking out of death and this earthly body to join Christ … may you not be missing. May I not be missing.

Song.

On the golden streets of heaven all men hope to walk some day,

Yet so many are not willing to accept the living way;

But while others build on good works, or opinions if they may,

Hallelujah! hallelujah!

I’m depending on the blood.

Refrain:

In the soul-cleansing blood of the Saviour,

I’ve been washed in the crimson flood;

Tho’ the world may say there is hope some other way,

I’m depending on the blood.

Some will tell us that God’s mercy is their only hope and plea,

That a soul He could not punish throughout all eternity;

But I read that my dear Saviour died for sinners just like me,

Hallelujah! hallelujah!

I’m depending on the blood..

Words: Johnson Oatman, Jr., 1856-1922

Prayer: O Lord, I plead the blood of Jesus to avail for me … Bring me clean to you. Amen

Fruitfulness

Forest Flowers Gen 38:25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff. 26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more. 27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

The harvest of deception was reaped not only by Jacob, but also by Judah. A chain of deception seems to have been unleashed as Judah encounters this lady called Tamar – who plays the harlot so she can be fruitful. Fruitfulness is important with God. Refusing to be fruitful for God can release unpredictable outcomes and unusual processes. Er, Judah’s first born and Onan the second are slain for refusing to bear fruit when God needed a seed. Both are said to be wicked.

Reflect on this. Refusing barrenness is a good mutiny. God must have fruit – souls, increase and expansion. Our lives must not be wasted otherwise you must cry to God and seek all fair means to bear fruit. There are many ways in which the Kingdom of God will be expanded. Through traditional parishes, through books, through online evangelism … and even as an Apostle in the market place. You will yet be fruitful for God.

Tamar becomes one of the ancestors of Jesus. What an unusual fruitfulness? The part that is most important in this devotional is to recognize that you will be fruitful. Do not assume that God has appointed you for barrenness. He has not. You will not have to play the prostitute for Christ has overcome every infirmity including situations that causes barrenness.

But what should the unfruitful do? Judah means Praise. Learn to praise and when you discover it … be given entirely to praising God. Praise God and the God that gives seed to the sower will cause the seeds that must provoke your harvest to be released.

Is it not unusual that Michal was noted as the only barren associated with David? It is instructive that she despised the praise of David who was a King who could not restrain himself from dancing and singing before His God. Today God will bring fruitfulness in the least expected situations … just keep on praising God. Your ministry will expand … your business will expand … you will give birth to twins … spiritually and physically you will be fruitful. Amen

Song. (Chorus)

When the Spirit of the Lord moves within my heart, I will dance like David danced

I will dance – I will dance – I will dance like David danced. (2ce)

Prayer: O Lord, Make me fruitful for you. Amen

It is not Over

GardenGen 37:35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. 36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.

It is not over, my sister. Be strong, my friend. Your pains are baked in the oven of lies, your comforters are liars … and all the conclusions of men concerning your situation are vain and untrue. All you have thought and concluded is untrue. It is not over.

Jacob will not be comforted, nor could the perpetrators of evil repent. The tender mercies of the wicked are cruel, saith the Lord … all their teachings and sermons to encourage you are wrong. The only truth for you today is that “It is not over.” God ignores all your cries and does not reckon with your wrong professions for God knows you are a man … and His plans are of Him … they were never your plans … all your plans and professions are best fitted for shredding and tossed into the trash bin.

Today, be encouraged – even in your pains. I will not ask you to change your conclusions because they are all you can see. Rather, if you are alive to be reading this devotional, then there is great hope. There is hope because of three main reasons.

First, unknown to you, there is a lot that happened, that happens and that will happen that is not for your sorrow but to give you the good end that is expected. Second, amongst your comforters are the traitors that do not have your peace of mind and joy as their priority. Rather, they wait to inherit your substance. But God has reserved your dream in a place that is safe. Third, your tears are for your past wicked ways … the tears you should have cried when you deceived your father and saw his grief, But you will go down into the grave rejoicing and not in mourning.

You may be reading this devotional and wonder how could this be? A huge stone is put to cover the grave of Christ to ensure the story ended in His crucifixion … but when God says a new chapter is about to open and it appears to us as though it has all ended in grief … be assured that “It is not over.” Indeed be not dismayed, a new beginning is about to commence. A new phase is about to start. Your troubles have a life span …  a short life span.

Song.

The race is not to the swift or strong, But to the few who fight the wrong

with revelation from His Word, Reject Baal, and follow on to know the Lord

( Leonard Ravenhill)

Prayer: O Lord, turn all my days of mourning to days of rejoicing and mirth. Amen

False Comforters

MP900178785Gen 37:35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. 36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.

How could the very sons that masterminded this terrible deed be the same ones that comfort Jacob? This false comfort is so typical. The same that is the architect of your sorrow is your chief comforter … what a deception? Can men truly comfort you? Are not most of their comforts false? How could Jacob be comforted by the same people who almost murdered Joseph and whose prayer was that Joseph will never be seen again. Many brethren and sisters prefer to be comforted by lies instead of going to the word of God for comfort that is true and real.

Are you in grief? Indeed all the people around you may mean well … though some are liars … alas you must go and get the word of God. Find a Bible and read the words of comfort from God. The Bible is so rich in true comfort unlike any other book you will ever find. Many contemporary writers and motivational speakers want to exclude Bible exposition thinking this too heavy for hearers but there is only false comfort outside scripture … only  clever lies or temporary fixes masked by false compassion. The brothers of Joseph could have won an Oscar for great dramatic performance. The wicked have become your comforters … may God help you. I pray you will learn to go to God and spare yourself the discovery that the best of men are men. God is waiting for you. He will wipe away your tears and tell you that all is well. You will find that hard to believe just as Jacob did … and perhaps you are able to justify your position. But that does not change the situation that all is well.

Stop mourning … lift up your eyes and be comforted. The dreams of men may have collapsed but the plans of God are perfectly intact … they only need to be rescued from clutches of men. Soon you will see clearly that God is good … and all the time. The Comforter has come. Do not weep any more.

Song.

O spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found,

Wherever human hearts and human woes abound;

Let ev’ry Christian tongue proclaim the joyful sound: The Comforter has come!

The Comforter has come, the Comforter has come!

The Holy Ghost from Heav’n, the Father’s promise giv’n;

O spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found- The Comforter has come!

The long, long night is past, the morning breaks at last,

And hushed the dreadful wail and fury of the blast,

As o’er the golden hills the day advances fast! The Comforter has come!

Lo, the great King of kings, with healing in His wings,

To ev’ry captive soul a full deliverance brings;

And through the vacant cells the song of triumph rings; The Comforter has come!

Words: Frank Bottome, 1890 .

Prayer: O Lord, often I cannot see your goodness … help me to know you are often best when you do not permit me to have my way. Comfort me in all my confusions. Amen

Change your Seed

Gen 37:31 And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; 32 And they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no. 33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

Jacob, the deceiver reaps a cruel deception. Today is a good day to reflect on the seeds you have sown and begin to sow a different seed. Every act of kindness, every act of giving, every act of betrayal – even if men forgive – will have its fruit because of the word of God which says Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Jacob and Rebekah succeeded to outwit the aging patriarch Isaac, and all seems to have been forgotten. Decades later, a cruel twist of circumstances introduces a more far reaching family deception into the life of Jacob. Begin to sow seeds of forgiveness and mercy. Begin to sow seeds of love especially when this is not returned. The harvest is usually in multiples of the seed, either for good or for evil. Great injustice is harvested by little seeds of unfairness. The coat of many colors given by man to unfairly single out Joseph is also unfairly destroyed by men in far worse circumstances of injustice.

The man who was a master of lies is also drowned in deception. But then Christ paid in full for our redemption and for our eternity in glory. Still our souls must in God’s mercy go through a process that brings us to know God and be transformed to be like Him. God’s plan is still intact although Jacob reaps a painful betrayal … this time he rests in God’s benevolence and trusts God fully to still work out His perfect will. David reaped the harvest of the seed of murder and adultery even though he received forgiveness from God.

The Apostle Paul was persecuting and putting Christians in prison and in his future ministry he spent most of his days incarcerated, but it prepared his soul best to be of the greatest use to God.

In Christ, the Bible says the punishment that brought us peace was laid on Christ. Christ paid for the evil harvest … but the Apostles also say that God can not be mocked, He is a God of principles; Principles beyond human control and manipulation.  O how we know in part on how He deals in mercy. Only through His mercy will any reach the future promised glory. “‘Tis mercy all, let earth adore” says the hymn writer… but the chorus is also true …“you are going to reap just what you sow – up in the mountains or down in the valley.”  Every day, every moment is an opportunity to sow the right thoughts, words and deeds.

Today, sing of His mercy. Pray for mercy. Give a special offering for mercy even as you change your seed. Sow a different seed of love and mercy. Small acts of kindness.

Song. (Chorus)

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceaseth, His mercy never comes to an end;

They are new every morning … Great is thy faithfulness O Lord (2ce)

Prayer: O Lord, Have mercy on me. Amen
