Running Scared and Getting Gutsy
At the start of 2014, I vowed to spenda littlelesstime outside of my comfort zone. Since leaving Wisconsin and taking The Leap in 2011, I had been pushing the boundaries of that zone pretty much constantly, from moving across the country, to starting a new career, to building a community, to self-promotion, to near-constant traveling on the stringiest of shoestring budgets.
It became exhausting and started to work against me. In 2014, I finally slowed down . . . and ended up doing some of my g...

Dear . . .
Brittany,
I want to write your story. All of your stories. I want to drink wine and listen all night to every weird part of yourself you haven’t quite figured out yet. Let me put it into words.
I want to read Anais Nin with you and watch you fall in love with Bukowski. I want to learn to dance ballet and practice yoga with you.
I want to find more of me with you.
I want to kiss you again.
Jessica,
I want to find comfort in you, a comfort few people can understand. I want to learn more about you and...

What I Want to Be When I Grow Up
I once wanted to be a construction worker, because I wanted to be everything my dad was after my parents’ divorce.
I once wanted to be a babysitter, because I liked babies (in doll form, mostly), and my sitter was an adult, so I figured it was a thing.
I once wanted to be a hairdresser, because I loved playing with beautiful hair.
In middle school, I wanted to become a famous pop singer – not just any shitty unknown singer – because I was in choir and 12 years old, and that’s what we all wanted....

Let Go of the Things That No Longer Serve You
A classic bit of yogi wisdom I was reminded of recently by Jessica Lawlor. And, in my opinion, a much more satisfying way of setting goals and resolutions than actually setting goals and resolutions.
(Read about yoga and letting go here.)
I’m letting go of . . .
Believing my brand needs to fit a conventional content marketing mold.
The power of my family’s disapproval.
Worrying what people will think when I write about deviant things like sex and following my dreams (I am not for everyone).
An edit...

Dear Internet
Dear Internet,
It’s become too damn cold to enjoy leaving the house, so I’m stuck with you and a bunch of dry skin for the next six months. I’m not that happy about this relationship; let’s start with honesty.
As a compromise, I’ll admit that I have a dorky love for things like writing, editing, and publishing; and both the cold and the internet are conducive to those hobbies/unfortunate career goals. I’ll spend the next few months creating stuff I hope all of you out there willwant to buy in J...

10 Spectacular Things Happening Right Now
While I was preparing to wallow in crankiness in North Dakota this week, I received an unexpected shove from a friend with a sixth sense.
From New York, Coach Jennie is giving the shove to her people all over the world to celebrate the spectacular things we do have, rather than lament what we don’t that might be bothering us.
Fine. I’ll take the bait.
1. I’m remembering how lucky I am to be able to make a living writing.
Before starting a part-time job and taking a hiatus from the hustle of solop...
