Book Review: CONSTRUCT A COUPLE by Talli Roland

%Úte%% | J.C. Martin

Construct A Couple is the sequel to Build A Man, which I read and loved, as evident from my review here, so I was really excited to read the follow-up novel.

Construct A Couple

Sometimes, even the best intentions can lead to disaster.

With a great job at a reputable magazine and a man who’s the perfect match, Serenity Holland thinks she’s laid the foundation for an ideal London life. When a routine assignment uncovers a shocking secret threatening her boyfriend’s company, Serenity decides to leave nothing to chance, taking matters into her own hands. Soon, though, she realises keeping secrets isn’t as easy as she thought … and the consequences are far worse than she ever imagined.

Review

With a reputable new job and a loving boyfriend, Serenity Holland’s life in London seems settled and almost perfect. Then a routine assignment turns up something that could threaten boyfriend Jeremy’s charity construction company. As always, Serenity decides to take matters into her own hands, without telling Jeremy. But is Jeremy also keeping a secret from her? And can their relationship survive all this secrecy?

After Build A Man made me a chick lit convert, I had high hopes for Construct A Couple, and happily, I was not disappointed. Serenity remains her inquisitive, lovable, Jaffa-chomping self, as she gets herself stuck in another sticky situation. I enjoyed re-visiting her best friend Kirsty and family, as well as new characters like the quirky Lizzie and the snotty (literally!) Gregor, proving once again that Roland has a knack for creating unique, memorable characters. I also enjoyed how Roland included the ins and outs of working for a newspaper magazine in Construct A Couple, which includes lots of details I never knew about.

Construct A Couple is a sweet and fitting sequel to Build A Man, but perhaps it’s because Build A Man was my first ever adventure into chick lit, it left a bigger impression on me. Nevertheless, I’m definitely going to read the third book in the series, Marriage to Measure, as I’m so excited to have Serenity and Jeremy tie the knot!

4½ stars!

GILDED WINGS Blog Tour: Guest Post by Amy Lignor

%Úte%% | J.C. Martin

Gilded Wings

Gilded Wings is book 2 of Amy Lignor’s YA paranormal series, The Angel Chronicles. One of the key themes in the series is the concept of soul mates, so Amy is here with a guest post on that very subject.

***Read on to find out how you could be in the running to win e-books, gift cards, swag, and all sorts of prizes in a massive giveaway!***

Can There Be More Than One Soul Mate?
by Amy Lignor

This is a tough question. Frankly, some would shout “Sacrilege!” if you said there could be more than one. After all, the whole point of romance is that there is one out there who was born for you. They are your other half; the one who stands by your side no matter what happens. One cheesy line from the movies that springs to mind is: “You complete me.” Which is what a soul mate would say.

But when it comes to Emily, she lives as a tortured soul as she does her work and completes her lives. Unlike Matthew, who seems to be completely sure that his angel partner is THE one who he wishes to be connected with in the romance department, Emily has an issue. She cares for Jason and Matthew and is attracted to them both. Even if they make her feel a certain way — whether it be seductive and sexy or calm and loving — Emily is tested to the limits where her heart is concerned, because she feels that no matter which one she chooses, someone will be hurt. And that ‘someone’ is the group of people she was sent to save.

Team JasonEmily has powers and gifts that she uses to help others down below — whether it be with words or actions — but she is also a girl. She feels the need for a partner who will protect her and love her no matter what. However, when she falls, she falls hard. With Jason, she would have a life of love and happiness. She could create a family with him and live with him the rest of her lives because her heart would continue to beat with true love. But … when you’re that much in love with someone, could you sacrifice them to do what you were meant to do … which is save others?

Team MattWhen it comes to Matthew, Emily is already in love. With Matthew there is a history. He has been friend, brother, partner and now … love? When will they finally admit that they are the soul mates that everyone thinks they should be? In the end, Emily’s problem doesn’t change. She will always stand in front of Matthew or sacrifice for him because of how much he means to her. And with that strong emotion comes the fact that if she does fall over the edge — if the friendship turns to true love — she knows she will turn her back on the rest of the souls in order to save only his.

Is Emily wrong? IS there only one soul mate and she just can’t see who that person is? Or is she simply so fearful that she will hurt others that she will choose to never give her heart away? Do I believe there’s more than one soul mate? No. However, I do believe you can be happy and loved even if it’s not the one, because that ‘one’ is only found by certain lucky people in their lifetimes.

Is Jason or is Matthew the soul mate here? Well … we shall see. But Emily does give others a great deal to think about.

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy

Gilded Wings

Gilded Wings

The beloved Angel-Warrior team from Until Next Time returns!

When Matt and Emily are sent on their second mission they have no idea how truly dark human nature can become…

Emily never wanted to face humans again. With the heartache that went on down below, she’s still trying to figure out how to save souls that don’t deserve saving. The only one she wants to see again is Jason — the young man she fell in love with who became the soul mate she simply can’t forget…

Matt was trained to protect and defend the souls down below. Longing to feel the heartfelt emotions that come from being human, Matt wants nothing more than to have just one life — one chance — to live and love the girl of his dreams…

The powerful team find themselves in a brand new century, living in the Gilded Age of New York City. Emily takes over the body of Anya, a young Russian girl who arrives on Ellis Island after a hideous tragedy. There she meets up with a strangely familiar young man by the name of Drew Parrish, who helps Anya survive in an unknown world of luxury, snobbery and … obsession.

What Anya’s inner angel doesn’t know is that the soul she loves is also back. This time around Jason goes by the name of Max Carrow. Once a quiet and kind boy, he’s now part of the ‘Four Hundred Club’, and wants nothing more than to be among the most admired as he climbs the shaky ladder of society’s elite.

As two worlds merge, Emily and Matt struggle under the weight of their “Gilded Wings”. Not only will they have to figure out who they should fight to save, but they must also face a romantic choice that could destroy them both.

Intriguing, no? Here’s a short excerpt to whet your appetite.

Gregori came running around the corner. His beautiful skin finally saw the light of day; his face was pink and clean, and the brilliance of his blue eyes staring back at her made Anya’s heart fill with emotion. He’d also traded his smelly clothes for a crisp white shirt and trousers with blue suspenders.

Anya smiled down at him. “Don’t you look altogether wonderful?”

“There you both are.”

Anya turned to see her Irish savior walking towards them. His gait was steady, and his long, muscular legs gave him a stride that spoke of strength and power — a young man who meant business.

Drew clapped his hands. “Well, just look at you. Clean and shiny like bright new pennies.”

Gregori jumped up and slapped hands with Drew, dropping his own personal treasure on the floor.

Drew reached down and picked it up, eyeing the cover. “The Old West, huh?”

“Yes,” Gregori replied, with a wide grin.

“He’s going to be a sheriff, like Wyatt Merp.”

“Earp!” Gregori corrected.

“Sorry,” Anya snickered. “Earp.”

“Well.” Drew laughed along with her, “Better than Burp, I suppose. I really don’t know why they always call it the Old West. It’s a pretty new place. There are lots of people going out there to settle and look for gold in those hills.”

“Gold?”

“Aye,” Drew said. “Seems some people have been finding it all over — right there in the ground — and there’s been a rush to get there and claim it. Poor immigrant settlers are becoming rich American tycoons,” Drew continued, with a wink, “in the blink of an eye.”

Anya whispered, as a voice suddenly drifted through her memory, “From rags to riches.”

THE NIGHTMARE COLLECTION Blog Tour: Even Editors Need Feedback by Cherie Reich & G1veaway!

%Úte%% | J.C. Martin

The lovely Cherie Reich hijacks visits my blog today as part of her blog tour to promote her latest book, The Nightmare Collection. Here’s her guest post about manuscript editing and the importance of beta readers/critique partners.

***Read on to find out how you could win signed copies of Cherie’s books, or an Amazon gift card!***

Even Editors Need Feedback
by Cherie Reich

As a writer, I know the importance of feedback on my manuscripts. We writers are way too close to our work, and what sounds right in our head might not translate to the reader. As a freelance editor, I try to edit like a reader. So you’d think I’d have an edge when it comes to editing my own manuscripts, right? Wrong! I still get caught up in things that work for me, but not for the reader.

For example, here is a brief scene in my first draft state from Nightmare Ever After:

“Did you alert the State Police?” Although the FBI had jurisdiction in the Jefferson National Forest, the State Police often would be involved too.

“I did. Called them right after you, but they haven’t arrived yet.” He motioned to the body. “What do you think?”

Tim scratched his chin. From his viewpoint, the area looked deserted, undisturbed, despite the dead body in its midst. Not even a bird chirped. “It’s possible the hiker could’ve died here. Heart attack, heat stroke, something of that nature. There’s no drag marks.”

He circled the body. “Not much blood. Dead before the animals got her, I suppose. The ME will be able to tell more.”

“So you think this is an accident?”

Here is what my critique partner Cher mentioned to me in her notes:

“I’d love to see a little more description concerning the area and the body itself. No maggots? No flies? This would make me think something has recently been close to the body, like an animal or something. Or it hasn’t been there long. Maybe for spook factor, you could insert an animal, maybe a bird to startle the men?”

Good ideas, and things I don’t know if I would’ve come up with, if she hadn’t mentioned them. Here is the same scene with the changes in place:

“Did you alert the State Police?” The FBI had jurisdiction in the Jefferson National Forest, but he wouldn’t be surprised if the State Police would be involved too. The Bureau was trying to get along better with the local and state police. They did know the land better, even if Tim sometimes thought they got in the way too much.

He tiptoed closer to the body, so he wouldn’t disturb the scene. Something shifted along the body’s upper torso. He squinted as he leaned closer.

“I did. Called them right after you.” Jones motioned to the body. “What do you think?”

“Something’s moving.” Tim scratched his chin. The odor shoved him back, but he drew closer to the corpse.

“Probably bugs.”

Tim removed a pen from his shirt’s pocket and lightly lifted up the neck of the tank top. Worm-like shapes writhed under the body. Then, a fat maggot popped out from the jagged tear along the victim’s throat.

Caw-caw! A crow flew from a tree branch, and Tim jerked upright. His heart thudded in his chest. He had to almost laugh at himself. Maggots were normal. So were birds in the woods. He was almost as bad as the barfing deputy.

“Agent O’Conner?” Sheriff Jones gave him a smug, slightly amused smile.

Great, the sheriff noticed his reaction as well. Tim slipped his pen back in his pocket and took a few steps away from the body. His gaze traveled up the slight incline. No signs of a struggle. The leaves and dirt appeared undisturbed, so he didn’t think she had fallen. A few animal markings—some scat and clawed tree bark — dotted the area.

“It’s possible the hiker could’ve died here. Heart attack, heat stroke, something of that nature. There’s no drag marks.” He circled the body. “Not much blood. Dead before the animals got her, I suppose. The ME will tell us more.”

“So you think this is an accident?”

Much better, I hope! I couldn’t imagine writing without some feedback.

If you have critique partners or beta readers, how have they helped you improve your writing?

Wanna Guest Post on the Fighter Writer?

%Úte%% | J.C. Martin

As I move closer to the baby “drop zone”, I’m growing increasingly aware of the fact my blogging schedule has become rather erratic of late. Once baby arrives, considering my parents (who will be first-time doting grandparents) will be visiting and staying over for a couple of month, I’m sure I’ll be way too busy (or preoccupied) to post much.

But, I’m loathe to leave the blog — and my readers — languishing. So … I decided to get my loyal followers to pick the blog content! :)

I’m looking to schedule a number of blog posts from January up till March, as I don’t foresee myself having much time for blogging during that time.

Guest post

Got a fascinating guest post to share on the Fighter Writer?
(click for image source)

Guest Post Guidelines

Topics can range from anything from reading to writing, to book marketing … anything readerly and writerly related! (Here’s a challenge: as this blog is called The Fighter Writer, if you can incorporate fighting or martial arts into the post in some way, it’ll be a bonus!)
Word count: 400-600 words
Regular readers/followers will have priority
EDIT: To clear things up, you do NOT have to write a guest post related to the crime and thriller genre. Any book or writing related posts are fine, especially general writing, publishing and writing tips. So please don’t be put off just because you write in a different genre!

Hopefully your guest post will help draw traffic to your own blog/site. If you want to promote something alongside your post (your latest book, editing services, etc.), that’s fine, too!

If you’re interested in doing a guest post, send me an e-mail! I look forward to hearing from you!

5 Ways Books Have Changed History: Guest Post by Jo Greig

%Úte%% | J.C. Martin

Jo Greig from Lovereading is here today with a guest post for lovers of books everywhere:

5 Ways Books Have Changed History
By Jo Greig

Radical writing produces radical reactions in readers. Chances are you’ll have read an influential book or two in your lifetime. Almost everyone can point to that one book that changed their life, but have you ever considered how books have changed the world? Here’s a sort of chronological list of the book’s life-changing, history-altering impact on the world.

1. Books Created National Identity

Stone books

The first books would hardly be recognizable to modern society, not only in physical appearance, but in topic. Many were made from small stone tablets contained in animal skin satchels, and contained simple records: cost accounting, territorial boundaries, royal lineages, etc. Before them, the fluidity of information allowed word-of-mouth to drastically alter the state of affairs. After record keepers began using books, nations started to form, and so the modern idea of national identity can be credited to the invention of books.

2. Books Moved Minds and Souls

With the invention of paper, books began to travel light. While the oral tradition has deep and delightful roots, it lacked the ability to convey dense information in a straightforward manner. Mistranslation, misrepresentation, and misunderstanding stopped dense information from passing one person to the next.

Religious books

Religious books

Books enabled capable people to write messages with enduring meaning, and paper allowed those messages to travel great distances, reaching readers far and wide. Until books, religions lacked the cohesion of belief systems. With the invention of papyrus and other parchments, religious traditions spanned borders. Judaism, Christianity, Islam and many other religions were given a strong backbone. Believers could pass their messages thousands of miles over land or sea. Readers far away could read the tenets of a religion, adopt that religion, and spread it further. Religious persuasion has arguably been the greatest historical alteration books have made on the world, but many future changes are notably important.

3. Books Educated

Textbooks

After the printing press, and the invention of the modern book, worldwide literacy expanded exponentially. Social caste systems began to crumble. An educated, literate population responded to its government with more demands. Democracy, capitalism, and communism thrived in literate populations, and the world power structure shifted, favouring countries with informed populations.

4. Books Surrendered

The tides of World War II may have favoured the instigators, had it not been for one book — and one reader.

General George S. Patton

General George S. Patton

Erwin Rommel, the decisive German Field Marshal, wrote Infanterie Greift An, which detailed the warfare tactics of his army. Had General George Patton not read the book, Rommel’s march might never have been stopped, leading the Germans to a successful rout of Europe. Patton, knowing Rommel’s war strategy, anticipated his moves and defeated the general, tying Germany’s war effort into a fatal knot.

5. Books Healed

Self-help books

Self-help books

Today, more books are written on healing, self-help, and healthy living than any other topics. People are empowered to take their health into their own hands, and worldwide life expectancy is rising rapidly. Through reading and knowledge, more people report feeling satisfied with their quality of life.

Certainly, books have done more, moved more, changed more than listed above, but these five general overviews of the power of books should whet any reader’s appetite to devour another book, or two, or three. Reading has changed the world.

22 Naked Bodies Inside: Reviewers Wanted!

%Úte%% | J.C. Martin

As you may know, one of my stories, Just One Cut, is featured in a short story anthology. The collection is called 22 Naked Bodies Inside and includes 22 short stories.

We are looking to get some reviews of the book. The publisher, pixelhose.com, is offering to reimburse the cost of the book for the first 25 reviews on either Smashwords or Amazon. You’d have to buy the book, but email me as soon as your review is posted on either site and I’ll notify the publisher. They will Paypal the full amount (plus Paypal fees) or send you a cheque, at your discretion.

The book is priced at $7.99.

There is a promotional coupon (see below) on Smashwords that will bring the price down to only $4.00 – yep! Only four bucks for 22 stories!

Thanks for helping us get some reviews!

22 Naked Bodies Insid

The stories collected in this book were all entered in the pixelhose.com First Writing Competition. Using a combination of social votes (e.g., through on-site or Facebook comments), and our opinion, these stories all were short-listed in the final stage of the contest, before winners were selected.

These stories have one thing in common: They all exhibit a level of openness that is rarely seen in works by emerging writers who, often, struggle in pain with conflicts arising of the necessity to stand naked before their readers.

The stories included in this collection are written in a wide range of themes, including Drama, Humor, Mystery, Science Fiction, and Crime. The collection proudly represents authors from seven different countries: United States, India, Argentina, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Australia, and Iran.

All content is in English.
