Imagine if you will that you are an author who has published several books. You are quite impressed that you are a writer and have published said books. This one is from quite late on in the novel - Torn says this to Serena in the cathedral. He is death obsessed and morbid. He’s living in the middle of an island full of lush green and all kinds of life but all he sees is darkness and death at every turn. Really, his world is a world of death and perpetual decay.
