My Power Comes From Writing

My Power Comes From Writing

What person will I be today?  I’ve noticed that when I say I’m on an adventure, my attitude, my demeanor, and my openness changes.  I walk with a spring in my gait, and I see more.   As a writer, I do this with an empty page.  Closing my eyes, I let my characters take me down a road, eat in a restaurant, do things I don’t normally do.

This afternoon, I took my morning walk late.  The sun was way overhead.  I didn’t have to bundle up like a snowwoman.  For some reason the possum that Jim discovered yesterday, sunning itself near our cactus bed, was on the driveway.  He greeted me with a paused disdain.  Standing still with dark beady eyes, he stared, unmoving.  I took the other side of the path and pretended he wasn’t there.  A false ignorance that didn’t fool either of us.

The crunch of ice underfoot, this late in the day, had melted and I avoided puddled potholes.

Gavel

Gavel

One who judges with calculation

As if they were god --- omni-blind

Rules with Hubris

Guilty of treating others poorly

When things go awry

Labels

Labels

A baby learns quickly the name of objects

But the feel and understanding of labels

Comes with intonation

A word, a home, a definition -- all

Changes with the context of emotion

What does philosophy, subsets and the evolution of a book have in common?

What does philosophy, subsets and the evolution of a book have in common?

In my class taught at Whatcom Community College, The Evolution of a Book: Idea to Fruition, I weave the web and pull the strands together so that a writer, becomes an author, and master of his/her fate, knowing where to tug, pull, and change direction.  Learning what the philosophy, subsets and the evolution of a book have in common.

Do you know where are going?

This is where you decide if you want to be a private writer or a public author.

Stark December

Stark December

December slipped through a marker of time

Chilled air, a disappearing sun

Darkness most of the day

Shortened light rays

Warmed by inside flames

Dream time tamed

Heartened, subdued

Till Spring

My Mind Travels

My Mind Travels

With my tendency to contemplate, it is no wonder that this month, my mind travels to retirement.  No, I’m not old.  I promise you that I’m as young as the spry teenager who climbed trees to write.  I’m still the girl who stared at an ant hill for hours watching male ant-workers carry pieces of food to an ever-rising hole.

I don’t know when it happened that I knew I was ready to let go of my restaurant.

Divisive Fractures

Divisive Fractures

A life divided, splits ideas and families

Remnants left, carry pasts to present futures

Let the heart hold the remnants

Piece together splits

Become whole

Negotiations

Negotiations

Come to the table, the etiquette of a gathering.
Where there is always a place for one more.
An empty plate filled with food and ideas that differ.
Make space for me.
Leave content, each voice heard.
