Here is part of a display of Lola Bensky in the lobby of the Savoy Hotel in
Berlin. The Savoy is my favorite hotel in Germany. It is utterly
idiosyncratic, feels like home and has been a comfortable refuge for artists,
writers, actors and film makers for decades.

On Packing

One of the first things I pack are two alarm clocks. This is absurd as I
have an alarm clock on my phone and all hotels have alarm clocks in each
room and a wakeup-call service. The next thing I pack is an umbrella.
Weather bothers me. Partly because it is unpredictable. And rain really
bothers me. It’s so bad for my hair. As well as my umbrella, I pack a rain
hat. I have an old French Connection rain hat, that I never travel without.
Actually I have four of them, which is just as well as they stopped making
them about ten years ago. They’re not very glamorous but they are effective.

On Lunch in New York

I often choose to meet people at Le Pain Quotidien for lunch. I always choose the chicken cob salad – minus the bacon, to my younger daughter’s dismay – and two slices of baguette. Sometimes, if I am all chickened out – say after Passover – I’ll have a large fruit salad and some baguette – they are very good – and jam.

On Moving People

“I always knew it was very important to move people, to make them laugh and make them cry.  I always felt you had to do both; you didn’t have a good life unless you were able to do both.  Just one wasn’t enough.  I think that is a large part of why I write – when I see an audience roaring with laughter over something that I wrote, I feel the most enormous happiness, like a little child on stage, smiling because I’m so happy.”

-in conversation with the US publisher of Too Many Men, September 2001.

Food is a very complicated subject for most women. When you grow up with parents who were literally starved for years and years, it becomes even more complicated. I used to hope that as I got older I’d have a more mellow attitude to food. I have a fantasy that if I’m lucky enough to live to be 90, I will be able to sit in a deck chair and eat all the chocolate I want. The truth is probably that if I was lucky enough to get to that age, I think I would still be calculating  calories and restricting my chocolate intake, which is a bit sad, really.
