Women Writers

“All of my main female characters have been writers. A poet, a playwright, an obituary writer. I have an almost infantile belief in the power of words. The right words could change the world. The right words could move people.”

On Writing

When I write I feel terrific. All the best parts of me are there. The lesser parts of me come out in my regular life, but when I’m writing, I have clarity and courage and peace of mind.

Why do I write?

“By the time they’ve finished the books I have written, my readers are hopefully more informed about the catastrophic consequences of bigotry, prejudice and hatred.” -Lily Brett

Memories and Cooking Spoons

I can’t seem to have enough wooden cooking spoons. I have my favourites and tend to use them over and over again… The worrying thing is that I regularly find that I don’t have exactly the right size wooden spoon I need.  I love looking at the spoons. They all hold memories of where I bought them.

The Auschwitz Drawings

I’m not sure too many homes have an entire wall devoted to drawings about
Auschwitz. These moving drawings are by my husband David Rankin. They
accompanied my book, The Auschwitz Poems.

You can tell I’m an expert photographer by the reflections I caught with my
iPad.

Women and their Writing

“My writing is all mine. I need no one’s help. I do it by myself. It is my private world and no one can encroach on it. This may be a more important aspect of writing, for me, because I’m female. Women have to share so many parts of their lives. It is rare for us to have a domain that is exclusively our own. I share all of my life with my husband and with my children. But when I write, I am on my own, with only my own references, my own feelings and my own interruptions.” —from my book In Full View

Writing in New York

“I have often been asked if it is hard to write in New York. I say no, it’s not hard to write in New York, it’s hard to write. Hard to discipline yourself, to sit alone in a room, day after day. Hard not to make phone calls, not to stay up too late, not to be diverted from what you are writing by all the diversions in life.” - from my book In Full View
