Having lived a basically boring life until early midle age, it was time for something interesting to happen. So I went to law school. It was fun but in the end didn't make much difference until my degree and the chance meeting with a long missing friend combined to provide an opportunity to escape into a new life in Rome, Italy. My husband and I spent ten years living the dolce vita (with a few hiccups on the way).

Now retired, I travel as often as possible in between volunteering for arts and literary organizations. I am starting work on my second novel, also set in Rome.

My husband and I piled into our friend’s snappy red Alfa-Romeo for the short drive to Cortona. The town is at the top of my list of places in Italy to spend a day, a weekend, or forever. No matter how many times I visit I always want to return to enjoy the lovely ambience. This time it was a sunny late October day. It was early when we left, wispy bits of ground fog hung on low-lying fields and... Read more of this blog post »

Wowee!! If you want an adventure story, this is it - jungle, bandits, fake explorers, near misses in a helicopter, fer-de-lance snakes and uncurable tropical diseases. The author, a well-known adventure writer describes the search for a lost city in ...more

I had a hard time with this book. It is a convoluted story about a woman's search for the meaning of a missing period in Dora Maar's unhappy relationship with Picasso after he dumped her in favor of the next woman. Might be very interesting to those ...more

I found this book both charming and an elegy to a time past, not in so many years, but in sensibility. It has the same quietness as A Month in the Country - a short novel but with layers of meaning. Those looking for an analyses of the Sutton Hoo Tre ...more

All women should read this book. The story behind the tract written by Mary Wollstonecraft, A Vindication of the Rights of Women, is still relevant today. But be warned, the book isn't an easy read as it pivots between these two freethinking women. M ...more

“...living in Rome is either a one or a two, or a nine or ten. Not much in between. And some days it's both.”

“Rome is the city of echoes, the city of illusions, and the city of yearning.”
Judith Works, City of Illusions

“Do the things external which fall upon thee distract thee? Give thyself time to learn something new and good, and cease to be whirled around.”
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

“If the real world were a book, it would never find a publisher. Overlong, detailed to the point of distraction-and ultimately, without a major resolution.”
Jasper Fforde, Something Rotten

“Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.”
