Christmas Traditions: The Strange and Highly Unusual

Christmas giveaway individ

When it comes to Christmas traditions, two come to mind.

The first is not unique to our family, but not as well-known as I once assumed.

Who has heard of the Christmas pickle?

Up until very recently, I thought everybody had! Then I saw a note from one of my editors in my upcoming manuscript (the scene involved the pickle), asking what in the world I was talking about. She had to look it up.

Supposedly, it’s an old German tradition, which would make sense. I come from hardy German stock. I grew up...

Go and Tell

candlelight

Light shines in the darkness. and the darkness has not overcome it.

-John 1:5

Last night I went to a women’s ministry event called Night of Joy.

There were cupcakes and hot chocolate and a boutique where all proceeds went to helping rescue women out of sex trafficking. There was music, and best of all, there was fellowship. Siting around a table, catching up with friends I don’t get to see nearly as much as I’d like.

At seven o’clock, we went into the sanctuary, which was packed, and together we...

Inevitable Joy

I’ll be honest.

As this season drew closer, I struggled.

I wondered how it could be a happy one without her here.

You see, I don’t look forward to spending another Christmas with my daughter half a world away. When I first held her in my arms 20 long months ago, I never ever imagined that all these days later, we’d still be apart.

Yet here we are, waiting. Another Christmas will come and go without her.

Call me Scrooge, but I couldn’t foresee getting into the Christmas spirit. Not this year.

Until...

audioThere’s a first time for everything and firsts ought to be celebrated!

An October Bride is available on audio!

I don’t know about you, but in this crazy busy world, audio books are an excellent way to fit the books I want to read into my life. Driving while reading. Walking while reading. Or my personal favorite, cleaning while reading. You really can’t beat it!

To celebrate this fun first, I’m giving away three copies of An October Bride, on audio.

If you’ve already read it on e-book, don’t let...

The Most Beautiful Selfies I’ve Ever Taken

As a woman, I’ve fallen into the trap we women (and men too) can so easily fall into.

Wishing my hair was thicker, my skin was tanner, my nose was straighter.

At every turn, we’re bombarded with the world’s definition of beauty.

Whether it’s the airbrushed models or actresses we see on the covers of magazines. The commercials and the ads and the billboards proclaiming quick fixes to acne or cellulite or dark circles or any other possible “flaw” a person should really hurry up and hide. Or Victor...

Bend the Knee and Be Small

I have a treat for my blog readers today–author guest, Joanne Bischof, who is releasing her novella, This Quiet Sky, very soon! I devoured it in a single sitting, it was so good. And today she’s here. I don’t know about you, but her topic strikes such a chord in my heart. I hope it ministers to you as much as it’s ministered to me. Without further ado, here’s Joanne. . .

The Scariest Answer

hazy streetSo last night I had this epiphany.

You ready for it?

Sometimes the scariest road to walk down is the one marked YES. click to tweet

I mean, really. God’s YES can be 100% scarier than His NO.

Look, don’t get me wrong.

When it comes to all prayers worth getting on our knees about, all those heartfelt petitions we bring before the Lord–our greatest dreams and our biggest wishes and the deepest desires of our hearts–NO is not a fun answer.

It can be deflating.

Depressing.

Frustrating.

Maddening.

But it’s a...

Write Like No One’s Watching

I’m pleased to have fellow writing friend, Rachel McMillan, here today! And I love her topic, too. Sometimes we writers can become paralyzed when we sit down in front of our computers. Today, Rachel gives us freedom to write like nobody is watching! The floor is yours, Rachel. . .

I love writing. When it is flowing and my finger pads are tip tapping their rhythm, almost as if propelled by a mind of their own, there is no greater euphoria in the world. When it’s going badly, there is no void th...
