So how do you like it? How to write and publish a serial.
Do you like to work slowly, dipping in and then pulling back; taking breaks and then picking up where you left off until you hit the big climax?
Or is it more a case of wham bam, thank you ma’am?
I’m talking about writing serial fiction, of course, and recently I’ve reached the conclusion that there’s room for both approaches.
In the past, I’ve published as I’ve gone along. With The Object of His Desire, for example, the first installment was available before I’d even written the first sentence of part two. I tried to keep to a monthly schedule, but even then I was getting reviews and other feedback from readers impatient to keep reading.
This can be a huge incentive to keep going, but it does pile the pressure on, particularly if you start to slip behind schedule. And if there isn’t that kind of reaction? Even more pressure!
My Working Girl series was a real slow burner, with very few sales at first. If I’d been publishing as I wrote, that quiet reception would have been very discouraging, and it would have appeared quite sensible to cut my losses and abandon the series unfinished. Luckily, though, I’d written drafts of three of the four parts before the first one appeared, and when you’re that close to the end you just have to finish, don’t you? Sales for Working Girl built slowly, and I’m really glad I stuck with it. Not only is there the satisfaction of having had the opportunity to tell the complete story, now it’s become a steady seller. I hate to think that it could so easily have been abandoned unfinished if I’d been working in a different way.
To any onlookers I’ve been a bit quiet recently on the publishing front, and this is because I’ve moved away from the write-and-publish-immediately strategy for serials. While that approach works for a lot of people, it’s too high-risk a strategy for me: I want to be able to just tell the story, without anything else intruding. Right now, I’m working on two serials, and for both I’ve chosen to wait until they’re complete before publishing.
So this week Trading Down, part one of the three-part bad boy erom thriller Winner Takes All, came out. Part two, Bad Company, will be out next week, and All or Nothing will conclude the series a few days after that. All three parts are written and waiting to go, which is a good feeling for me – and, I hope, for my readers!
Since completing that series, I’ve moved on to Back Stage Pass, a three-part rock star romance. So far I’ve written the first draft of the opening part, Let’s Make This Thing Happen, and lots of notes for the rest of the series, and I’m loving it.
I like working like this: it lets me get my head down and just keep on going until I reach the end. I think that energy comes through in the storytelling, and readers benefit by not having to wait too long for each part.
Is it a wham bam, thank you ma’am approach? Well maybe, but sometimes you just have to go hard and fast until you reach the end, don’t you think?

Excerpt
It was just a normal night until the stranger in the tux turned up at Pappy’s Lobster Bar.
Old Bub was in his corner, in his checkered shirt and suspenders that hitched his pants almost up into his armpits, and that woolen cap on the crown of his head like a kippah. He’d been cradling that Bud for at least an hour, just like any other night. Finn was by the jukebox, feeding it enough coins for a steady stream of Billy Joel.
Cassie stood behind the bar, her elbows leaning on its scuffed surface. She could recite the words from anything from 52nd Street thanks to Finn and his musical OCD.
Cassie was slim and honey blonde, a silver stud in her nose, half a dozen rings and studs lined up around each ear lobe, and an oriental script tattoo on one exposed shoulder. She’d worked at Pappy’s for two seasons now, and by anybody’s reckoning that was probably a season too long for anyone who had an alternative.
Over by the window a young couple in disposable plastic bibs wrestled with plates loaded with lobster. On a good day you could see across to Holbrook Island from where they sat but on a teeming night like tonight there was just a splattering of golfball-sized raindrops on the glass and the flickering lights of the trailer park, heading down to the bay.
That rain was something. It was good Fall Maine kind of rain: giant drops hurled horizontal by the wind coming in off the bay. That was the kind of wind that made the glass rattle in the window-frames like either wood or glass would give way at any moment, the kind of wind that made trees grow leaning over flat as if they wanted to hug the ground.
A week more and Pappy’s would be closed down for the winter. Not that the locals didn’t have a call for beer and good food in the winter months, but this was the kind of place where sensible folk put things by for winter rather than heading out. True, it was the kind of place where Finn and Old Bub would wrap up warm and trek through snow and ice to get here for the jukebox and beer, if the owner Lou was fool enough to stay open, but the delivery guys, well they were made of something far softer these days.
So the place closed down for winter, and Lou and his family headed south to their Daytona Beach trailer home. That left the likes of Cassie to do whatever they could to get through a few fallow months.
But closing down for a Maine winter was still a week away, and right now it was just the two grizzled regulars and a young couple who for some reason had thought late Fall in Maine was a good idea.
It was not the kind of a night, or the kind of a place, where you would expect to find Denny McGowan.
§
“Hey, Bub. You going to drink that beer or shall I wrap it so you can take it home?” Same old line, same old grunt of a response. Old Bub would be there till ten, down the rest of his Bud in a single swallow, and then head out into the night.
Cassie glanced across towards the window table. The young couple didn’t need anything yet. Back to her nails, hooker red and chipped. That kind of summed up how she felt right then. Cheap and worn. She liked it here at Pappy’s, but was she really going to be back in March to open up again? Was this her life now that she’d lasted more than a solitary season?
She took a cloth and gave the bar a spray and a wipe, even though it already had enough shine that she could do her face in it.
All this cleaning, it was wrecking her hands. The skin was dry. It made her feel old when she wasn’t even 25 until January. She hated this time of year, hated this sinking feeling, the Fall blues. She needed change. She needed something new.
She needed this not to be it.
Just then, with perfect timing, the door burst open, slamming against the wall as the gale took it. Standing there, framed in the doorway, was the guy Cassie would come to know as Denny McGowan.
In that tailored tux he looked like he should be someplace else entirely, but yet… it looked like he had walked here. On a night like this! His patent leather shoes were scuffed and dirty, there was mud around the cuffs of his pants; his shirt was untucked, his undone bow tie hanging loose. His jacket hung heavy with the rain, and his black hair was plastered to his skull. Maybe there had been an accident, or his car had broken down back on the highway.
Then, with a cheeky grin that cracked his face and put a sparkle in his eyes, he reached into his pocket, produced a fat roll of hundred dollar bills, and casually thumbed one free of the sodden mass of paper.
“So tell me, what does a guy have to do to get a drink around here?” he asked in an accent somewhere between Boston and genuine Irish, and then he stepped inside, pulling the door shut behind him and shutting the wild storm out.

Spotlight: Saloni Quinby, author of Weapons of Redemption
Scroll down for extract and contest!
Whips and Chains is the first in the Weapons of Redemption Series. Tell us more about it.
Weapons of Redemption focuses on five men who were abducted and changed by a vampire pirate. Now they use their powers to help other victims. Each man has found his own way to cope with the pain and guilt of his past. The last book in the series focuses on the villain, giving his side of the story and opening up the possibility of redemption for him.
How did you come up with the title?
The five vampire rebels used the skills they perfected under the control of their cruel master and now use them to protect others, so they have actually become weapons of redemption.
When will we see the rest of the series?
The entire series is currently available at Changeling Press.
Your publisher describes this as paranormal BDSM erotic romance. What is it about the paranormal that makes that erotic heat so much hotter?
I’m not sure that paranormal necessarily makes erotica hotter, but as far as plotline goes, it’s fun to explore a world in which supernatural creatures exist. I especially love the vampire myth. To me they’re at the top of the list of sexiest paranormal creatures. I love their power and depending on the type of vampire, there’s the possibility of a long life so the characters can have lots of adventures through different time periods.
Do you write in other genres too?
Yes, I also write historical romance as well as some contemporary and suspense.
What is it about a story that takes you past that tipping point – from when an idea is merely interesting to when it becomes something that simply has to be written?
When the main characters nag me so much that I have to write their story.
Do the people around you know what you write? How have they reacted, or how would they react?
My family and closest friends know what I write and they’re very supportive. I’ve always written so it wasn’t a big surprise for them. Anyone who really knows me wouldn’t be surprised by what I write, so it was never a big issue.
What’s the best part of being a writer?
To me the best part of being a writer is creating characters and worlds I love and hoping others enjoy them too.
What’s the most challenging part of being a writer?
Deciding which idea to work on next. Sometimes I feel like the characters are fighting a battle in my head for whose story is next to be told.
What is your writing process?
I like to work with a loose outline so I know where the story is going, however I need to leave some wiggle room for the inevitable changes that happen while the story is being written.
Where do you write?
I do most of my writing at home at my desk. I always keep a notebook with me, though. When a scene pops into my head, I like make note of it or if possible write it then and there.
What’s your ‘guilty pleasure’?
Horror movies! Truly I’m not all that guilty about it, but I’ll watch just about any type of horror movie. I especially love grade B horror/action movies.
And finally, back to Weapons of Redemption 1: Whips and Chains: if you were on an elevator with someone and had a few seconds to convince them to read your book, what would you tell them?
If you like hot gay romance and vampire heroes, try Weapons of Redemption.

by Saloni Quinby
Five men, enslaved by a vampire pirate and forced to do his bidding, rebelled against their master and earned the wrath of a monster. Now, while plotting to destroy the man who, centuries later, still thinks he owns them, they use their powers to protect other victims.
In a seedy underworld of sex and violence, a serial killer is stalking men and Guy is called upon to find the murderer. Ryan, a professional Dom known as the Beast Tamer, specializes in meting out pleasure and pain to oversized men. While undercover, Guy and the sexy young man with a mysterious past become lovers, but is Ryan the next victim or is he the killer?
The following excerpt from WHIPS AND CHAINS is for readers 18 and over.
Usually Guy had complete control over his body, but Ryan did something to him. Throughout the meal, when Ryan looked at him a certain way or made simple gestures, such as moistening his lips or handling his silverware, Guy’s cock stiffened and he tingled everywhere. A few times he had to restrain himself from reaching across the table, kissing Ryan and fucking him then and there.
He wondered what it would be like for them. Would they end up fighting each other for dominance? Probably. Although Guy wanted to draw information from Ryan, he didn’t relish the thought of breaking his spirit. A man like this probably wouldn’t take well to being forced into submission, or even lured into it, but Ryan had no chance of winning a battle of wills against a vampire.
Yet Ryan’s pleasure or Guy’s wasn’t the issue here. People were being murdered and Guy needed to do everything in his power to stop it.
After dinner, Guy and Ryan split the bill and headed back to the dungeon.
“This was an interesting evening,” Ryan said when they stopped outside his door.
“We should do it again.”
“Yes.”
Ryan’s huge blue eyes stared into Guy’s, drawing him in. He and Ryan simultaneously grasped each other’s faces. Their mouths met in a hungry kiss. Guy groaned. The pressure of their kiss opened the cut on Ryan’s lower lip. Guy licked and sucked it, relishing the taste of his delicious blood.

How to get bargain erotica and romance
If you’ve been following me on Facebook, Twitter or here on my blog, you’ll have seen a number of cut-price sales over the last few months. I just thought I’d post some notes on how to make sure you don’t miss these offers for bargain erotica and romance, but first a short explanation of the rationale.
The team at my publishers James Grieve Press follow a standard pricing model, so most of my titles are set at $2.99 and upwards. This is based on what’s normal for the market: $3.99 for a short novel seems like a pretty good deal, for example – not much more than the price of a coffee, and it’s around the bottom end of what most publishers are charging (Hell, some of the trad publishers are still charging $10 for an ebook!).
There are a few exceptions, though. In particular:
Series openers: what better way to hook readers into a series than give them the first volume for free or at a mere 99c? With this, we’re trusting to quality: if you read book one, we really hope you enjoy it enough to buy the rest.
Short-term sales: if you’re reading this you’re special – you’re part of that small segment of readership that interacts with authors and publishers. The vast majority don’t do this: they just want the books. The way this works for short-term offers is a small spike in sales can make a big difference to visibility at places like Amazon: by making unprofitable offers available to readers like you, publishers can generate those little spikes that make their titles more visible to all the other readers, and this effect lingers after the price goes back to normal.
Launch price: books often open at a low price to get exactly that kind of visibility boost on publication.
So how do you spot these sales?
All my new titles are published at a low introductory price for a few days. The best way to spot these is to sign up for my mailing lists: follow these links to sign up for my Polly J Adams / PJ Adams erotica and erotic romance mailing list , and, under my other writing name, my Ruby Fielding shifter and paranormal erotic romance mailing list .
Short-term sales tend to move quickly: I don’t generally bother my mailing lists with them as they might be over if a reader leaves it a couple of days before clicking on a link (for example, my current cut-price offer is the complete box-set of the very explicit erom The Wings of Desire for only 99c – get in quick!). Mailing list subscribers often have these books already, too. The best way to pick up on these sales is to follow me on social media:
Polly J Adams (erotica and erotic romance) on Facebook and Twitter
Ruby Fielding (shifter and paranormal erotic romance) on Facebook
Series openers: here are some of my cut-price series openers:

When Trudy goes to her estranged brother’s wedding, the last thing she expects is one of those moments: a handsome stranger, their eyes meeting across a crowded room… a tempting, but dangerous stranger. Determined to find out more, she discovers that dark secrets bind him to her brother; she also learns that he’s the kind of man who gets what he wants, and what he wants right now is Trudy.

Captive at the Billionaires’ Sex Club by Polly J Adams – 99 cents
When Kate decided to spend the summer as a waitress at parties for the super-rich, she knew she would be moving in circles she’d never encountered before – a completely different world. It turned out to be a world of depravity and pure unbridled lust she had never even dreamed about. That summer, she discovered the Billionaires? Sex Club. An explicit story of bondage, dubious consent and more.
Amazon.com – Amazon.co.uk

She lives alone in a world destroyed by plagues, the Shifters’ World: a world where you can’t trust anything, particularly strangers. When a man appears on her territory, she is right to be wary. She’s right not to trust the powerful urges he inspires in her. The first story in a powerfully sensuous, and very explicit, shape-changer series.
Amazon.com – Amazon.co.uk
As I say, my publishers are following fairly standard pricing models, and these special offers are a part of that. I can’t guarantee that every author and publisher operates exactly the same way when publicizing these deals, but it’s a safe bet that you’ll get far more great deals if you follow these simple rules: sign up for mailing lists, and follow your favorite authors on Facebook and Twitter.
And did I mention my current offer for the complete box-set of the very explicit erom The Wings of Desire? It’s been cut to 99c, but the deal will be available for a few days only.
The Wings of Desire
All eight stories in bestselling erotica author Polly J Adams’ very explicit erotic romance series, Knee-tremblers and Indulgence, brought together in a single volume. Two series following one woman’s journey from an adulterous relationship with a close friend’s husband, to exploring her sexuality at a country-mansion sex club with its enigmatic owner. Eight sizzlingly explicit tales of sexual adventure, exploration and desire.

Pollygraph (interviews with erotica and romance authors): Tina Donohue
Your latest title, Stolen Desire, is the fourth book in your Outlawed Realm paranormal erotica series from Samhain. Is it a standalone, or should it be read as part of that series?
Although Stolen Desire is a standalone in that it wraps up the story of the major characters, it’s also Book Four of my Outlawed Realm series. Reading it as part of the series certainly adds richness to the plot. The other titles in the series are:
Unending Desire – Book One
Illicit Desire – Book Two
Shameless Desire – Book Three
Stolen Desire tells the story of recently single Paige Ross – one minute standing outside a Seattle bar and the next she’s waking up in what’s described as a candlelit room looking something like Satan’s brothel… Tell us more!
This series is an erotic paranormal/sci-fi. I’ve established in the first three books that there are five dimensions on earth, one on top of each other – like this graphic:
E1, Earth as we know it, is the top layer, closest to the sun, followed by E2, E3, etc. beneath it. Because of time differentials, the inhabitants of one realm don’t know the others exist, unless they cross over through a portal. Guards on E4 have discovered this and are travelling to E1 to capture women for use as sexual slaves. One of them grabs Paige in Seattle and she wakes up in that room on E5, a dimension of fire and ice. Naturally, she freaks out. Especially when Zekin comes to rescue her. She doesn’t know who he is, but she has to trust him in order to escape and survive!
Is there more to come from the Outlawed Realm? (Please say ‘yes’!)
As long as my fans want more, I’ll definitely write more of the series. J
There seems to be a trend emerging for erotica and romance that gets pretty dark. Does the Outlawed Realm series fit into this trend? How do you balance the darkness with other aspects in your storytelling?
If you mean BDSM, the only book in the series that comes close to that is Illicit Desire, which takes place on E4 where there’s a Pleasure Palace and sexual slaves. However, the BDSM isn’t a huge part of the story. The romance between Lukan and Arez, and their struggle to escape, is the main ingredient.
Your other new title is Seven Sensuous Days (from Ellora’s Cave), this one a contemporary story of a woman up for auction. Perhaps you would tell us a little more about this one, too, while we have the opportunity?
Gladly. Seven Sensuous Days is Book Four in my Appointment with Pleasure series. Tessa works for an escort agency that caters to the rich and powerful in Washington, DC. Although Tessa is pretty, she’s also voluptuous (like that redheaded babe in Mad Men), and has always considered herself too full-figured. It’s shaken her confidence. She’s not certain any of the guys at the auction will even bid on her. When Logan does, it stops Tessa dead. She’s had her eye on him from the start. His rugged good looks and commanding presence take her breath away. He’s a man who’s lost everything and only wants to have fun now, to forget. That is, until he meets Tessa. She changes his world.
The other books in the series are:
Claiming Magique – Book One
Losing Control – Book Two
Illicit Intent – Book Three
How do you manage to juggle all the eggs, switching from genre to genre and series to series?
It’s really not that difficult. I write one book at a time, and once I’m into the plot, I really don’t think about anything else until that story’s finished.
What’s the worst thing about the writer’s life? And the best?
Worst thing: All the promo a writer is expected to do. I’d like to spend all of my time writing. Unfortunately, you have to get out the word on your books, so promo takes up a good chunk of my time.
Best thing: Living in someone else’s head, doing all the exciting and erotic things I’d never dare do in my real life.
Are you active online and in social media? How do you like to interact with your readers?
Absolutely. I’m on FB, Twitter, LI. I own Sweet n Sexy Divas, a blog about romance. I’m one of the resident authors at Romance Books 4 Us. It’s a rare day when I’m not online interacting with readers and authors.

Does input from readers ever influence your work – in plotting, or in choosing what to work on next?
I always listen to my audience, because I want to please them. However, that can become difficult. Whereas one group of fans likes the ultra-erotic aspects of a story, the other group might want it to be closer to sweet. I’ve learned long ago I can’t please everyone. I do whatever I can to tell the best story possible.
What are readers asking for next, and what will we see from you next?
I’ve had many fans ask me to write Ronnie and Wallace’s story. They’re the continuing characters in my Appointment with Pleasure series. I’m still trying to figure out how to do that since their romance is pretty well established in the other books.
I’ve also had readers ask about a sequel to my Samhain release The Yearning. That’s definitely doable, and I’m still thinking about plot points for it.

Is three a crowd? The ins and outs of group sex.
Over on the One Handed Writers’ Blog I’ve posted about the appeal of group sex:
Let’s get together: the ins and outs of group sex
It’s a topic that clearly works for me, judging by the number of group sex titles I’ve written!
Here are a few of them:
The Billionaires’ Sex Club
When Kate Vale decided to spend the summer as a waitress at parties for the super-rich, she didn’t expect to be plunged into a world of depravity and pure unbridled lust. All three Billionaires’ Sex Club novelettes in one volume. Explicit stories of bondage, dubious consent, multiple partners and more from the bestselling author of Bad Again and Wings of Desire. (The Billionaires’ Sex Club at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo)
Anonymous: Seduced by Strangers (Erotica Boxed Set)
Skin on skin, tangled limbs, the touch of a stranger… A club for billionaires with almost every desire imaginable. A simple tweet that leads to a flash mob like no other. A birthday treat for a woman who wants it all. Anonymous: a big and explicit boxed set of stories featuring liaisons with strangers, spontaneous pick-ups and the wildest of parties. (Anonymous: Seduced by Strangers (Erotica Boxed Set) at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo)
Working Girl: the complete set
A good girl from a small town family, Beth Masters is seduced by her wealthy boss on her first day. The loss of her virginity is the first step on a journey that leads her to discover a totally unsuspected side to her nature. A story full of sex with her wealthy bosses and complete strangers, a world of cuckoldry and sexual adventure as Beth discovers what kind of a girl she really is. (Working Girl: the complete set at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo)
Three’s Company
If three’s company, then what’s a crowd? Three stories of multiple partners, threesomes and group sex from the bestselling author of Bad Again and The Billionaires’ Sex Club. These stories are very explicit, and for a mature audience only. The stories in this bundle are The Virgin and the Three Brothers, Lizzie and Cara… Make Three, and Flash Mob Gangbang. (Three’s Company at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo)
The Wings of Desire: all eight Knee-tremblers and Indulgence stories in one volume
(The Wings of Desire: all eight Knee-tremblers and Indulgence stories in one volume at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo)
And there are many more listed on the group sex and multiple partners page of my website!

Spotlight: Seven Sensuous Days by Tina Donohue – excerpt and release contest!
A big welcome to bestseller Tina Donohue!
To mark publication of her new title Ellora’s Cave title, Seven Sensuous Days, I’m hosting an extract and a book release contest – details below.
At an erotic auction, she’s his to bid on…to take…to command.
The night’s sultry, filled with carnal promise as Tessa participates in an agency event to raise money for charity. She’s chained and bared—as women were once displayed for a sultan’s harem—her sweet looks and full figure offered to the wealthy and powerful men.
Among them is Logan. To him, Tessa is so different from his late wife, the seemingly perfect female who cruelly stole his hope and future. Wanting only to forget and have a good time, he wins Tessa, demanding she be his in every way possible, engaging in all wanton acts, though not only for an evening…for seven sensuous days at his secluded Virginia estate.
A provocative proposal with such a dangerously virile man.
A week that changes everything, with Tessa’s exquisite vulnerability and Logan’s suddenly unquenchable desire more than either bargained for.
Excerpt:
Music swelled, drums drowning out what had sounded like flutes and a female voice trilling something. Blood pounded in Tessa’s ears, muting it all. With her face lowered, all she could see was the purplish sheen of her cape. She sensed the panels in front of her parting, the stage displayed. Beyond it were a series of steps descending to a stone walkway flanked with splashing fountains, which eventually led to the crowd…the one man who was supposed to win her for an evening.
A full day was reserved for goddesses like Felicity. With her participation in this event, Ronnie would probably have enough funds to build a community college for young women.
The microphone screeched with brief feedback. Tessa made a face. Ronnie said something Tessa didn’t quite catch.
She bit her bottom lip, and decided to hell with it. She was going to take Felicity’s advice and fantasize.
“He’s dark and dangerous,” Felicity had said.
His features would be masculine, strong, slightly rough, his face shadowed with his coming beard. No, wait. He’d have a mustache and a closely cropped goatee, that hair as dark as his eyebrows. His eyes would be black, piercing, his skin a deep bronze, his lips satiny, his mouth full and rich.
He’d move into her with a right given him by birth, as a ruler. As a male. Looking down at her, he’d smile, shameless lust transforming his features, making him seem even more dangerous. Sex would be on his terms. He’d take her in any manner he chose. Orally, vaginally, anally, his strength precluding escape, his stiffened cock demanding its due, all that she could—
Tessa’s cunt stopped aching with need as her hood fell away. Or rather, Brian had pulled it back. Instinctively, she lifted her head, her attention darting everywhere, much as she suspected a real captive would have behaved, not knowing what to expect. A part of her mind recorded water spraying from the fountains, the again-subdued music, rich and seductive. Ronnie’s voice. The muted conversations of the ladies with their so-called masters.
Those men who hadn’t yet made their selections were quiet. Tessa regarded each. Some were listening to Ronnie. Others glanced at Tessa’s cloak, no doubt wanting it off.
With a flourish, Brian complied and pulled the thing from her, then lifted her arms above her head, securing her shackled wrists to the column.
Tessa stiffened at being exposed in every way possible. There was no hiding her nudity or expression up here, not with the lights trained on her. They weren’t fully intrusive, just enough illumination to exhibit, making her the brightest spot among all the shadows and the torches’ flickering flames. The toasty breeze skimmed the faint moisture on her cunt and licked her nipples, puckering them even more so that the tips appeared that much longer. Areas Felicity’s makeup had accentuated.
Perspiration prickled Tessa’s neck. Her heart beat out of time, the pose she struck both daunting and oddly arousing. There was absolutely nothing to compare to this…being chained and displayed. A sensation of delicious helplessness. Intense vulnerability.
Especially as no one spoke up.
Oh no.
Embarrassment drove heat to Tessa’s throat and cheeks. The music played on and on. Each second crawled by while her mind raced. Would her part in the auction stop when the piece ended even though no one had offered a price? Would Ronnie call for an intermission then, or would she want to continue with the rest of the event as quickly as—
Someone called out a bid.
Tessa’s heart paused. She hadn’t hear the amount. It didn’t matter. One man, at least, craved her.
Who? She studied the audience. A guy, forty or so, smiled with kindness, rather than lust, no doubt sensing and seeing her uncertainty. She offered her own smile in return, liking his sympathetic manner, wondering if he was the one who’d bid on her.
No. He’d already turned to the server and was now pointing at his drink as though he wanted a new one more than anything else.
So who had made the offer?
Another client kept looking from her to Ronnie. Others took a moment to study the program, see who was coming up next.
That would be Felicity. For her, the men would shout over each other, demanding to be heard, letting the money flow freely.
Another bid rang out.
Completely surprised, Tessa continued to regard the crowd, her attention drawn finally, almost irresistibly, to Logan Kincaid.
She forgot to breathe.
Someone had relit the torch nearest his table. Its bobbing light bathed him in a warm golden glow.
Tessa’s body softened.
Young—thirties or so, just as she’d thought—he wore his dark brown hair longish on the top and sides, combed away from his face. His features were rugged, deliciously masculine, especially his shadow of beard. Tessa had no doubt those short bristles would be rough to the touch, a wonderful contradiction to the silkiness of his lips, his generous mouth. A man’s mouth.
Warmth sluiced through her again, the heat soothing this time. Arousing.
He wore a beige blazer that went well with his tan complexion, his white shirt opened at the collar. Decidedly relaxed. The same as his demeanor. He lowered his drink…whiskey or bourbon…from here it was impossible for her to tell. He glanced at his watch, then surveyed the crowd, not her.
Ronnie took another bid.
With a neutral expression, Logan regarded the man who’d made it.
Tessa didn’t bother to look. She focused on Logan.
Another bid followed the last. As if to determine why, Logan finally glanced at the stage.
Tessa’s pulse pounded. Her legs felt watery.
His attention swept upward from the ridiculous shoes she wore to her naked calves and thighs. He studied her exposed cunt and glittering body jewelry for a moment, then continued to her bared breasts, viewing them briefly before he at last reached her eyes.
There, he stopped, as though he hadn’t meant to. There, he lingered.
