The thing where you wake up, realize it’s morning already, feel the press of a naked body against you and you don’t know whose body it is. Dutch’s legs went unsteady.
“Let me change and get my cleaning stuff,” she said. “I’ll have this place sparkling in no time.”
Travis didn’t step out of her way. “About what you’re wearing.”

Mercy perked up. Travis frowned. “You can’t wear that around here.”
Surprise then confusion flickered across her face. “You mean while I cook.”
“I mean anywhere on the property.”
A flash of offense crowded out her first response. “Why?” She regarded her outfit. “What’s wrong with it?”
Nothing as far as Dutch was concerned.
Travis sighed. “When guys start drinking, they stop using their heads.”
Her slender eyebrows shot up. “They’re going to be drinking in my cabin? In the woods surrounding it? In my car?”
Dutch snickered.
Travis shot him a look then turned to her. “Of course not. But I don’t want you traipsing around here dressed like that.”
“Traipsing? Like I have all the time in the world, not two jobs?”
“Look, it’s my place,” he said. “And those are the rules.”
She spoke to Dutch. “What did Greg wear when he cooked?”
Dutch tried to recall. “Ah, jeans and an undershirt.”
“Want me to wear that?” she asked Travis. “Or would a burka be better?”
Dutch laughed.
Travis frowned. “I don’t want anyone attacking you.”
“Because I’m your employee?” she asked. “Or because they might find me attractive?”
Travis screwed up his mouth as though he’d tasted something shitty. “Because you’ll get hurt.”
“I can take care of myself.”
“Until you can’t,” he countered.
“What if I want to attack them?” She looked from him to Dutch and back. “Is that allowed?”
“You mean because you’re only looking for a good time?” Dutch asked. “Nothing permanent? No strings?”
“Sure. Isn’t that what makes the world go ’round?”
Not according to Travis, at least when it came to her. Dutch looked at his friend, his expression saying, ‘Hey fool, you were wrong.’
Or at least misguided. There was still that hint of worship about Mercy. However, she was proving to be as practical as they were. Looking for fun. Happy to settle for that.
Until she wasn’t.
Fuck. Travis’s warning still echoed in Dutch’s mind.
Travis mumbled, “Dress appropriately. That’s all I ask. And stay out of trouble. I’ve got enough shit to handle without having to rescue you.”
Her sass evaporated. She looked so hurt Dutch had to stop himself from hugging her, and risk all hell breaking loose.
“Don’t worry, you won’t,” she murmured. “Let me get my stuff so I can clean this place.”
Travis finally stepped out of her way. Mercy stopped, then turned back to him. “Thanks for letting me stay.” On her tiptoes, she cupped his face and brushed her lips over his.
Dutch gaped.
She hushed to Travis. “I really appreciate it.”
Before he could say anything or start breathing again, she moved into Dutch, cupping his face. His cock shot to attention at her feathery touch, his lids sliding down. Her lips weren’t cold from the Popsicle as he’d imagined, but soft and achingly warm. She smelled of something flowery and feminine. Alluring as hell.

He shrugged. “That gives us fifteen minutes until you have to catch the train,” he said, “and I’m sure we can find somewhere discreet. I promise you: it’s really not going to take that long if you get it right.”
She sat back and slapped his hand, a little harder than she’d intended. He laughed and she laughed, too, then she stood, fixed him with a look, and said, “Well what are you waiting for?”

My love affair with Canada’s bestseller lists
I love Canada.
A few weeks ago I wrote here about how my romantic suspense novel Winner Takes All had somehow become a runaway bestseller in Canada, topping several genre charts and peaking at number 8 of all books at amazon.ca. I studied what had happened quite closely, but just couldn’t put my finger on the reason for the book’s Canadian success. Sometimes, though, these things just happen: a couple of sales give a book a push and become a handful of sales; that gets the book into a few also-bought listings and targeted email promos and it can snowball. You really can’t control these things, so I put it down as a nice fluke and moved on.
This month’s novel, Black Widow, seemed to confirm that. This book had almost exactly the same kind of promotion as Winner Takes All, but appeared to vanish without a trace in Canada. Then, out of the blue, I noticed this weekend that something was starting to happen. With all the promotional activity over, and no explanation I could identify, Black Widow had hit the top thirty of all books in Canada, jumping from a ranking of lower than 7000 to number 24 in the space of a day…
As I watched, it kept climbing, peaking at number 14 overall, topping the romantic suspense chart and hitting number 2 in suspense, before slipping back to the current level of 21.
I’ve no idea what’s going on, but I’m delighted that my two most recent novels have been Canadian bestsellers. It’s a real thrill seeing my books up there with the likes of Stephen King, Jodi Picault and Kathy Reichs, and I’m just starting to think that this may be something more than a fluke.
So, as I say, I do love Canada, and in particular I love Canada’s bestseller lists!

The address Nadia gave them was a short distance away, an easy walk according to the map on Martin’s iPhone. Night had drawn in while they were in the theater, and the streets and bars were bustling.
They threaded their way through the Red Light District, hand in hand. No words. Selena wasn’t sure what to say, or what they were heading towards.
Finally, she tugged at Martin’s hand, forcing him to stop and turn. She stretched up and kissed him. So different to kissing Nadia’s full lips: his kiss was firmer, his lips harder, and his stubble scraped. And those strong arms wrapped themselves around her so that her body just molded itself against his.
“You okay?” he said, when they eventually pulled apart.
She nodded. “You good with this?” she asked. So much still unspoken, but now she understood that they didn’t need to say it out loud: they both knew what kind of party they were heading for, and they were both good with it.
“Any ground rules?” she asked.
He shrugged. “I love you,” he said. “Will that do?”
She nodded, took his hand, and they walked on.

Black Widow: the first responses
We’re just starting to get the first reader responses to Black Widow, and it’s going well so far!
Black Widow is a bit of a departure for me – a romantic thriller with dark undercurrents – so I’m very curious to see what people think.
I’ve written bestselling romantic thrillers before. I’ve seen my face plastered all over glossy magazines. I’ve had my books optioned by big-time producers for the movies. I’ve been around.
But with this book I wanted to try something different. With Black Widow I wanted to be bad.
I wanted to write a novel that pushed the boundaries. A romance novel that got really dark and edgy. A thriller that kept readers right on the edge of their seats, never quite sure if my protagonist was going to come good and triumph.
I wanted to take the dark romance genre and write a lead character with spirit: Eleanor Dryton is no pushover. She’s been dragged down, she’s lost everything she’d ever treasured, and now she’s emerging on the other side and looking for revenge.
And I wanted to turn it all into a love story.
It was quite a challenge, and it really was fun to write.
