Jocelyn Hobbie: Beauties – Jessica Silverman, San Francisco

Jocelyn Hobbie

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 20, 2023) –  Jessica Silverman is pleased to announce Jocelyn Hobbie: Beauties, the artist’s first solo show in San Francisco, from March 8 to April 20, 2024. The artist will present a series of new oil paintings on canvas and paper portraying introspective women whose bodies evaporate into floral and graphic designs.

Hobbie’s paintings reflect her command of art history, engaging the traditions of Art Nouveau and Ukiyo-e, for example, and her dialogue with artists such as William Morris, Gustav Klimt, Tamara Lempicka, and Kehinde Wile. Inventions of her imagination, Hobbie’s hyper-real depictions of women are painted without models. Her patterns are original, albeit inspired by a wide range of tiles, textiles, and other ornamental abstraction.

Hobbie’s paintings on canvas entangle her alluring figures within intricate, hypnotic arrangements of plant life and cultural geometries. In Peak Desire , a commanding female figure is seen amid a sea of richly rendered yellow tulips, blue plumeria, and multicolor dahlias. Black and red butterflies that flutter among the petals echo hues in the woman’s vest, oscillating between dimensional curves and flat textures. Slipping the portrait between billowing patterns, the contrast between foreground and background collapses. In her own world, the woman’s face projects a gaze that defines the artist’s visual vocabulary, extending her reach beyond the frame.

The exhibition also includes several oil-on-paper paintings. Unlike the dense layering of her canvases, these delicately executed works combine patterns on a flat plane. Like art quilts, they draw from the legacy of 1970s feminist art. Hobbie places her women into universes of complex harmony, contrasting stillness with movement, exertion with rest. Her dense patterns do not entrap her subjects; rather, the swirl of visual activity shields them from solitude.

Internationally renowned Don Giovanni production at the Opera House

Don Giovanni

Following Salzburg, Berlin, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Paris, Claus Guth’s critically acclaimed 2008 adaptation of Don Giovanni is presented at the Opera House. The title role of this provocative, youthful production (sold out weeks before the 2 March 2024 Budapest premiere) is performed by Gábor Bretz and Károly Szemerédy, the ensembles of the Hungarian State Opera are conducted by principal conductor Martin Rajna.

Don Juan, the arrogant womanizer who defies the heavens, has inspired authors in various art forms for centuries. His figure was first established by the 17th-century Spanish playwright Tirso de Molina, but his story was also written by Molière, whose play was adapted as ballet music by Gluck a hundred years later. (The contemporary French choreographer Thierry Malandain’s choreography to Gluck’s music was presented by the Hungarian National Ballet in 2021.) The first 18th-century opera adaptation (Antonio Denzio, 1730) and the Prague performances of Vincenzo Righini’s 1776 tragicomedy also contributed to Mozart’s treatment of the subject together with Lorenzo Da Ponte, the librettist of his previous successful opera, Le nozze di Figaro. The premiere of the opera took place in 1787 at the National Theater in Prague (today’s Estates Theatre) with the composer conducting.

The opera by Mozart and Da Ponte, which provides a wide framework for interpretation, was staged in 2008 by Claus Guth at the request of the Salzburg Festival. Guth, an outstanding representative of the German Regietheater, had already been known for his stagings of contemporary operas as well as several productions from the classical repertoire that are often provocative but always consider the original intentions of the authors.

Don GiovanniDon Giovanni

The director employed by Europe’s leading opera houses transfers the plot to a forest in the present. An important change in his interpretation is that in the opening duel, Don Giovanni also receives a fatal wound. Thus, the action becomes the agony of the heartthrob, a look-back on his life full of conquests and hedonism. The concept combines both the 1787 Prague and the 1788 Vienna versions of the opera: just like the Austrian premiere, it omits the closing sextet, which can be considered a second finale of the piece, but at the same time it does not use the rarely performed Leporello-Zerlina duet of the same version. The realistic-naturalistic approach is completed by the lifelike night forest created by designer Christian Schmidt for a revolving stage. The timelessness of the production is shown by the fact that in the last decade it has been staged by the Berlin State Opera, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the Teatro Real in Madrid, and this season by the Opéra Bastille in Paris.

The title role of Don Giovanni is sung on alternate performances by two internationally recognized Hungarian soloists. Gábor Bretz previously performed the immoral womanizer at the Erkel Theatre Budapest, the National Theater in Zagreb, and at the Sydney Opera House. Károly Szemerédy, who has already performed the role at the Teatro Real in Madrid, is now making his debut as Don Giovanni at the Budapest Opera House. Leporello is performed by Krisztián Cser, who has played Don Giovanni’s servant at the OPERA’s productions for more than a decade.

Further cast includes young talents of the OPERA: Prima Award recipient Natália Tuznik as Donna Anna, Artúr Szeleczki as Don Ottavio, Bence Pataki as Masetto, Brigitta Kele as Donna Elvira, and András Kiss as Commendatore. The role of Zerlina is performed by Boglárka Brindás, currently training at the Academy of the Paris Opera. The Hungarian State Opera Orchestra and Chorus (chorus director: Gábor Csiki) are conducted by Prima Award recipient Martin Rajna.

Rachid Koraïchi: Celestial Blue – October Gallery, London

Rachid Koraïchi

October Gallery presents Celestial Blue, a solo exhibition of new works by the renowned artist Rachid Koraïchi. Born in the Aurès mountains of Algeria, Koraïchi’s creative explorations have employed an impressive range of media, which include paintings on canvas, paper and silk, bronze, wood and steel sculptures, ceramics and textiles. Koraïchi’s abiding fascination with signs of all kinds is the unwavering constant informing his conscious and finely detailed work. Beginning from the intricate tracery of Arabic writing – often in reverse or mirror script – Koraïchi deploys symbols, numbers and ciphers drawn from a variety of languages and cultural traditions. Whether the source be numerological insights transmitted from times long past or fluid ideogrammatic glyphs of his own inspiration, Koraïchi organises these multi- layered embroideries of signs into moving statements that interpret afresh the world that surrounds us all.

In accordance with Koraïchi’s predilection for the magical number 7 – considered significant in all the major traditions – Celestial Blue will celebrate the artist’s 77th year. This exhibition will include canvas works interspersed with statuesque steel sculptures, in his characteristically figurative forms. The works on canvas are inspired by the nasibs that the 12th century Sufi mystic and writer, Ibn ‘Arabi, set down in his book of love poems, The Interpreter of Desires (1215). Each large, square canvas presents an original design produced in white on an indigo blue ground that improvises upon one of the original poems. Rather than being a direct translation, each work becomes a sustained reflection on the profundity of Ibn ‘Arabi’s original vision, offering a visual correlative to the ideas expressed in a modified, entirely contemporary form.

This outpouring of hand-painted ornamental forms allows Koraïchi to overlay modern concerns and commentary on the work of the Sufi mystic writer. Since no religious faith actively promotes genocide or the massacre of innocents, the ongoing atrocities in the Middle East today cannot be consciously condoned. For both Ibn ‘Arabi and Koraïchi, it seems self-evident that the so-called ‘Holy Land’ ought never be polluted by such outrages. Although originally from Andalucia, in Spain, Ibn ‘Arabi journeyed around the Middle East throughout his lifetime, eventually choosing to settle in Damascus as a revered master of the Sufi path. His writings transmit the unequivocal message of love for all others, without exception, as being the distinctive mark of evolved human beings. In the early 13th century,

Ibn ‘Arabi wrote, ‘I practice the religion of love, wherever its camels turn their faces. / This is my religion and my faith.’

Celestial Blue continues Koraïchi’s unique exploration of the spiritual path, and its fundamental message of Tolerance for all. His art reveals how ancient practices still have relevance today.

“Risqué Business: The Netherlands and Germany” (2024): A new and fun adventure, this time in Europe

Risqué Business: The Netherlands and Germany - Netflix

Risqué Business: The Netherlands and Germany” is a documentary series created by Kim In-shik starring Shin Dong-youp and singer Sung Si-kyung.

They begin in the Netherlands and Germany, taking a more serious approach than the previous two seasons. They explain the Red Light District in Amsterdam and delve into it, interviewing a couple who engage in sexual activities up to six times a night on stage. Our two South Korean comedians maintain a respectful tone throughout, almost like newscasters, as they shift to a more documentary style and momentarily forget that they are comedians hosting a humorous show.

As they reach Berlin, the night becomes even more serious with the Berlin clubs where almost everything is permitted and adults-only activities are practiced. To conclude this journey, in the sixth episode of the season, we get to see a very unique marriage: a woman with two husbands. Our friends speak with them and try to understand the situation, while also showcasing it to the world.

Moving on to the second season, after visiting Taiwan and Japan, we now explore Europe and witness significant differences, especially in the attitude of our hosts. They seem to take things more seriously and let the interviewees and situations take the spotlight. Indeed, we are in two of the most liberal countries in the world with many stories to tell, more clubs open to these pleasures, and a more active mindset and relaxed attitude towards these establishments.

This third season is perhaps more informative, with six episodes in a travel documentary style where we can discover these places, immerse ourselves in them, and learn what goes on there. It is an interesting series that consistently delivers on its promises and neither disappoints nor surprises. It is exactly what it claims to be, and it does so with enthusiasm and great hosts. However, this time with a slightly less humorous tone than the previous two seasons.

David Maljkovic: Overpaint with Shadows – Sprüth Magers, London

David Maljkovic

David Maljkovic’s exhibition Overpaint with Shadows on the third floor of Sprüth Magers, London, presents a series of new paintings and architectural interventions that take the process of overpainting as both their subject and source. For Maljkovic, the act of overpainting is equally literal and metaphorical, pertaining not only to painting itself, but also addressing the content, or rather, the starting point.

Maljkovic is known for a multifaceted practice that, through a collagist approach referencing the works of other artists and his own earlier works and exhibitions, considers individual and collective attitudes toward the complexity of time, whilst also playing with the nature of the gaze. Through painting, he continues to address the themes he has also examined through photography, film, installation, sculpture, and collage.

Maljkovic is concerned with the tension between painting, object, and space to the extent that exhibition-making itself can be considered his subject. The galleries at Sprüth Magers come with their own inscribed narrative, a series of rooms with a domestic past. To this he has choreographed new ensembles, a series of painting events that present different positions of pictoriality, representing a certain idea about the painting and its action and meaning in a wider context. The materiality of the pictorial code itself is not always contained exclusively in the painting; it meanders within his practice, across various media, and through a broad field of references.

His use of pictorial montage recalls his earlier film work Images With Their Own Shadows (2008). Filmed at night, it consists of static compositions from the studio of the Croatian artist and architect Vjenceslav Richter. Taking over his title in which ‘painting’ becomes ‘image’, spatial paintings in their transfer to 16 mm tape become film images. In this process, they confirm the place of the ‘shadows’ in the retelling of history.

With a key element of his work the careful choreography of the exhibition experience, there is a sublimation of his driving themes into this singular focal point, his main drives made manifest as the exhibition itself. Its scenography, as well as the origins of the motifs often linked to the history and experiences of stage design, unfold within the scenic quality of the paintings. Throughout, loose architectural details of stage sets invite the viewer to gaze into them, perhaps as if they were in the theatre audience, with perspectival illusions of proscenium arches, or of props and players scattered across the stage.

Take, for example, Overpaint with Shadows (2023) derived from 1923 stage designs by Croatian artist Ljubo Babić for the play ‘Shadows’, an immaterial design for a ballet performance that is materialised solely through light and shadow. Building upon the sketch of the scenography, Maljkovic overpaints the previous painting so that the shadow itself becomes ambiguous. Paint across the canvas appears at points scumbled or as a thin stain, and elsewhere more heavily overpainted, previous tones evident underneath.

This principle is taken from his previous cycle of paintings Overpaint with Venice (2023). Here, too, the source is Babić and a drawing for a stage design he produced in 1918 for an unperformed rendition of Verdi’s opera Otello. In this process, the motifs become elements for overpainting, taking them beyond their given role. In the series of paintings It may have been overpainted even before it was put on the exhibition, the act of overpainting behaves differently from painting to painting. In some areas, the manipulated pattern emphasizes the structure of the painting, and elsewhere, it is present as a vector drawing used to direct a laser engraving that travels over its frame.

The painting Two Models (2022) includes two random elements that form a new pictorial relationship—a costume from Anatol Petrytsky’s ballet The Red Poppy and Ljubo Babić’s stage design for the play Spring Awakening. Here, two different motifs from the 1920s, derived from two sources, appear restless and are treated as still lives. Equally, in two works titled The Missing Master (2023 and 2024), the role of costumes by Petrytsky create an archetype or model of the master.

Throughout, the various sources and elements are used to build a new whole, the process itself transcending their given content and removing their meaning.

Regardless of the narrative present at the starting point of each painting, its execution does not directly mediate that narrative but rather opens new semantic processes. Maljkovic’s series of motifs act as metaphorical platforms on which they are objectified, becoming signs whose content, as well as their mutual relations, are positioned and moderated precisely by the painting process. Motifs become characters, and their roles change in the construction of painting itself. In these new works, Maljkovic continues to work through an introspective instinct and by not fixing his own work in a permanent state, he (re)creates new solutions to work against, if not quite overcome, these impersonal forces.

David Maljkovic (*1973, Rijeka) lives and works in Zagreb. Selected solo exhibitions include Quetzal Art Center, Portugal (2023), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka (2020), Renaissance Society, Chicago (2019), Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana, VOX Centre de l’Image Contemporaine, Montreal (both 2016), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2014), Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2014), Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2013), CAC-Contemporary Art Senter, Vilnius (2013), Kunsthalle Basel (with Latifa Echakhch, 2012), Sculpture Center, New York (with Lucy Skaer, 2012), Secession, Vienna (2011–2012), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2009), Kunstverein Hamburg (2007) and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2007). Selected group exhibitions include Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana, Fondazione Merz, MoMA, New York (all 2019), Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb, ICA, Boston (both 2018), Mumok, Vienna (2016), Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis (2015), Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2014), MAXXI Museum, Rome (2013), La Triennale, Paris (2012), Bucharest Biennale 5 (2012), Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (2011–2012), Arnolfini, Bristol (2011), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2011), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (2011) and the 29th Bienal de São Paulo (2010). A Full Collection of Networked Products

Personifying a “connected experience,” 9dcc’s debut collection stands as a testament to the brand’s innovative ‘Networked Product’ concept, integrating the tangible with the digital through blockchain authentication. Collaborating with IYK*, 9dcc has embedded NFC chip technology into its high-quality garments, creating a link to their digital entities on the Ethereum blockchain and more. The innovation lies in the NFC chips discretely woven into each garment, which, when scanned, grants access to the exclusive digital asset associated with the product. This technology transcends the traditional scope of loyalty programs by offering verified authenticity, enhanced access to the brand, and networking opportunities within the 9dcc ecosystem. Owners of 9dcc are granted entry into an elite community, opening channels for direct communication and perks from gmoney and the 9dcc brand. This initiative exemplifies gmoney’s commitment to establishing an authentic, luxury experience deeply rooted in culture and enabled by blockchain.

“Technology is becoming increasingly intertwined with our daily lives,” shares gmoney, CEO of 9dcc. “The essence of future luxury lies in convenience. Our vision for fashion is to bridge connections with culture, unlock new opportunities, and foster deeper interactions with our surroundings. ‘Networked Products’ was established on these core beliefs, and we have propelled the 9dcc platform to the forefront of connected experiences, positioning us years ahead of traditional luxury brands. We’re charting a new course for how fashion houses engage with their audiences by venturing into a realm where the value of fandom surpasses that of mere transactions.”
