Mea Culpa (2024) Netflix Film: A suspenseful thriller with an excellent script

“Mea Culpa” is a movie writen and directed by Tyler Perry. It stars Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes.

Tyler Perry is a talented actor, writer, and director. He showcases his skills in two of these roles (directing and writing) to bring us this classic thriller that relies heavily on its script and performances, offering a perfect Hitchcock-style intrigue.

It’s a well-rounded film, one of many we have seen, with good acting, solid dialogue, and impeccable direction that stays true to the genre’s guidelines.

Is it surprising? Not at all.

Plot

A lawyer with marital problems decides to defend a famous painter accused of murder. Things get complicated due to her husband’s family and a clear conflict of interest in the case. She begins to get close to her client, a famous and charming man, and the case starts to affect her personally.

About the Film

A perfect movie for Friday nights, with Kelly Rowland standing out as the absolute protagonist. She plays the heroine and star of the film in a role that, while not Oscar-worthy, allows her to shine with an excellent script that hits all the right marks and delivers a good suspense film, albeit one that fails to leave a lasting impression on the viewer.

It’s a story so classic and traditionally crafted that, despite all its virtues, it fails to bring a touch of originality that we miss.

It’s excellent and knows how to pace itself. The relationship between the artist and the lawyer takes its time. And yet, everything is so predictable and classic that the good technical work loses much of its appeal.

It knows how to develop secondary characters and give them a reason to be in a perfectly crafted script that fits together harmoniously, but without surprising or making the film stand out among the countless almost identical thrillers we’ve seen.

It’s an “old-fashioned” suspense film: the tension lies in the dialogues, the character development, and how the plot and intrigue slowly consume the characters from within.

Without chases, risky scenes, or adventures, this film relies heavily on psychological elements.

“Mea Culpa” seems content with following the thriller norms and, while executing them well, doesn’t seem to want to stand out consciously.

A traditional film, perfectly crafted. Excellent script, good performances, coherent dialogue and plot. It doesn’t surprise or stand out, and it won’t leave a lasting impression.

Sean Kelly Gallery at Frieze Los Angeles 2024, Stand A18

Sean Kelly is delighted to return to Frieze Los Angeles, where we will present an immersive environment by LA-based conceptual artist, Awol Erizku. Blending symbols from both Western and non-Western practices, Erizku engages visual tropes from Contemporary, African, and Black American cultures across the diaspora. In his work, Erizku renounces Eurocentric notions of beauty and art history in favor of shaping his own unique Afrocentric vernacular and aesthetics, one he refers to as “Afro-esotericism.”

Erizku’s presentation at Frieze Los Angeles includes powerful, symbolic imagery that transcends centuries and cultures, offering unique perspectives on traditional interpretations of beauty. To create this environment, inspired by a recent research trip to The Andy Warhol Museum, Erizku will paint the booth dark grey and silk-screen it floor-to-ceiling with likenesses of the 18th Dynasty Egyptian Queen, Nefertiti. Calling upon sources and inspirations as varied as Ancient Egypt, Marcel Duchamp, hip-hop and contemporary culture, the variety of photographs, lightbox, silkscreen, and neon works highlight the breadth of Erizku’s expansive practice.

In one key work, Erizku uses a postcard of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, 1503, as his point of reference. Informed by Duchamp’s infamous readymade, L.H.O.O.Q., 1919—comprised of a postcard upon which the artist drew a mustache and beard on the Mona Lisa—in this work, Erizku depicts the infamous subject with a zipper adhered to her face, a reference to artist David Hammons’ iconic Fly Jar, 1996. Twelve Nefertitis, features a grid of silkscreened images of the iconic subject in the colors of the Pan-African Flag, a reference to the technique made famous by pop artist Andy Warhol.

Neon has also been a key medium throughout Erizku’s oeuvre; the neon work featured on the booth is produced in a fashion reminiscent of nail salon signage, further exploring images of beauty in metropolitan culture and advertising. Other photographic works, spanning the last several years, offer an overview of images of idealized beauty from the natural world, cultural ephemera, and everyday objects. The installation also acknowledges the essential role music plays throughout Erizku’s work and is accompanied by a playlist which can be accessed via the QR code on the booth.

This solo presentation provides a focused survey of Erizku’s uniquely resonant visual language and invokes aspects of his recently coined term “Trap Conceptualism.” It coincides with his first institutional solo exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia, now on view through July 3, 2024, and precedes his forthcoming exhibition at The Momentary/Crystal Bridges, Bentonville, AK, which opens in May 2024.

Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and Leonia Senior Center Are Bringing Music and Movement to Seniors!

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, which has worked with the Leonia Senior Center since 2022, is excited to announce two new eight-week seniors’ residencies, in both music and creative dance, thanks to a $10,000 grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Creative Aging Initiative.

Since 2022, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has conducted senior Tai Chi Classes at the center, which have been well attended. The Leonia Senior Center serves the Borough of Leonia, as well as seniors from neighboring towns – the center’s classes, activities and trips are open to any seniors (55+) from surrounding towns.

“I am thrilled we will have the opportunity to reach more seniors and provide them with movement and socializing with this grant. Nai-Ni Dance company launched a terrific Morning Tai Chi class , and now with this grant, we can offer seniors Creative Dance for Seniors with Rio Kikuchi and Music and Movement with Julie Sung as free classes” said Maggie Browne, Senior Coordinator.

The music residency will be taught by Leonia Recreation Center instructor Julie Sung, in the Leonia Senior Center at 305 Beechwood Pl., Leonia, NJ. The 8-week residency will take place every Saturday from 11:45am – 12:30pm, starting May 4, 2024 and ending June 22. Registration opens March 26. The creative dance for seniors residency will be taught by Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company member Rio Kikuchi from September to December 2024, in the Leonia Senior Center at 305 Beechwood Pl., Leonia, NJ.

By focusing on language accessibility, accessible space, and using Asian American instructors, the project team provides an environment that is free of visible and invisible barriers. The classes will be a welcoming experience for all participants, with proper respect being paid to the Asian immigrant participants.

In 2022, Nai-Ni Chen was a 2022 Bessie Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Nai-Ni Chen was a force in the dance community with her unique choreographic body of work that fuses Eastern cultural forms of Chinese dance and the Western world of modern dance. Her vision of the immigrant’s journey of crossing cultures and adapting to a new home provided endless inspirations and opportunities for creative expressions that enrich the human experience.

About the Artists:

Julie Sung has worked in music education for over 20 years, working not only with seniors but with children. She has a background in music theory and music appreciation, as well as experience as a music and movement coordinator. Since 2009, she has worked at Leonia Recreation, and in 2023, she  expanded her offerings to working with Leonia Senior Center in 2023.Leonia Senior Center as a Senior Music & Movement Instructor, teaching cardio drumming to seniors.

Rio Kikuchi was born in Tokyo, Japan. At the age of 3, Rio began ballet training at Studio Benus in Japan and later she was introduced to Tap and Jazz. She took Summer Intensive at Kirov Academy of Ballet of Washington DC in 2015. She also studied Ballet technique and Point work privately with Luis Villanueva. In 2017, Rio moved to New York and was offered a scholarship to study at The School of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. In addition, she received a scholarship at Alonzo King Lines Ballet Summer Program in 2019. She has worked with Ronni Favors, Darshan Singh Bhuller and performed “Memora” with Alvin Ailey Dance Theater at New York City Center in 2018.

Netflix presents one of its biggest premieres of the season, “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, a series tailored for a teenage audience that combines all the elements of an action-packed adventure to create an epic journey where a young boy, aided by his friends, must save the world. For the younger viewers, this series is a delight filled with special effects, movement, and characters specifically designed to appeal to a teenage audience. Adventures, fantasy, and plenty of fights and action make this series a visual feast of special effects.

Four basic elements, four nations living in harmony: air, water, earth, and fire. The Avatar is the one who maintains balance between the four kingdoms and elements. The cycle repeats endlessly, rotating through the four elements. And in this instance, the Avatar will come from the Air Kingdom. Our story follows a 12-year-old boy who seems destined to become the Avatar and maintain balance amidst the war. However, when everything is in place for his Avatar training, the Fire Lord intervenes and sets off a chain of events, forcing the young boy and his new friends to prevent the fire from destroying the delicate balance.

About the Series

A kind of “Lord of the Rings” tailored for a teenage audience, but with all the classic elements of the epic genre: a character destined for greatness and to save the world, around which magical elements revolve to give way to battles, magic, friendship… A plot that, although not new in cinema or literature, continues to captivate generation after generation.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is a series that pays homage to its sources and does not shy away from its classic elements. It knows it is not reinventing the genre and that it cannot and should not reinvent the epic adventure, which has been present since the beginning of humanity. It takes elements from here and there, condensing Buddhist, Greek, and other traditions to create a coherent cultural ecosystem that leads to what we are all waiting for: a great adventure starring teenagers as the heroes.

By the way, this is not the first time this story has been brought to the screen, there was an animated series in 2005.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is simply amazing: highly entertaining, with spectacular camera movements and action. It knows when to pause, reflect, and take its characters and the adventure seriously. Full of fire, storms, water… the four elements guided by these four masters who, controlling them, do not hesitate to offer us spectacular scenes that will leave the younger viewers glued to their seats. For the older audience… perhaps the series is a bit too focused on young adults, but it is so visually stunning that it is truly entertaining and, if we forget for a moment that we are responsible adults (if we are), we can sit back and enjoy this spectacular production by Netflix and Nickelodeon.

Our Opinion

Fascinating, spectacular, charming and classic. A true delight for fans of fantasy, adventure, and war scenes. An avalanche of special effects for those willing to forget about existential philosophy for a while. Enjoy, because this series is worth it.

Rural America is an America that is often overlooked, and even more discounted are the people who live within these regions and their ways of life. Generally dismissed as being unrelatable or out of touch with those who live in urban and city centers, the histories within these regions run quite deep and the Mennonite communities of Pennsylvania fall into this dismissed subset of rich cultures within America. These communities have longstanding commitments to pacifism, nonviolence, advocating for peace, and community building which date back to their origins in 16th-century Europe. This communal lifestyle is evident in practices such as cooperative farming and sewing circles, where neighbors and family come together and work collectively toward common goals in support of each other – much akin to the ways of life that residents of small towns throughout rural America often function.

The Huntress exhibition by Samantha Joy Groff is a selection of new and recent works from her ongoing Dark Pastures series which draws inspiration from the mythological figure of Diana the Huntress–a common figure within Renaissance art–with her upbringing in a rural Mennonite Pennsylvania. Groff has set out to portray her goddesses of the countryside, nature, hunters, wildlife, and the night and move away from the traditional portrayals of Diana in serene and ecstatic moments. Groff’s paintings delve into the darker aspects of the literal and metaphorical hunt and life within rural areas of America, by using imagery of women and animals as the dual subjects of desire. While the women depicted in the paintings are not actively engaged in hunting, the ambiguity surrounding their relationship to the prey creates an atmosphere of suspense and unease. Using luminous surfaces and vibrant yellows, the paintings evoke a sense of hypervigilance, a sense of impending doom, and a need for protection.

The interaction between the human and animal in the artworks carries an undertone of violence, as they are depicted as being handled in a manner that suggests restraint and discomfort, both by the animals and the female sitters. The wearing of animal skins, typically associated with camouflage or higher social status, takes on a grotesque quality, with headdresses and veils crafted from found materials and animal pelts. The compositions of Groff’s paintings echo classical masterworks and make art historical references to works such as “Lady with Ermine” by Leonardo Da Vinci and “Portrait of Louis XIV” by Hyacinthe Rigaud, which balances both the presence of luxury through adorning oneself with fur and the domestication of wildlife. Groff riffs on classical paintings by depicting her bruised and embattled figures wearing sheer nightgowns and satin dresses that antagonize and counter traditional Mennonite garb against the backdrop of a lonely wilderness. Her pieces highlight the stark disparity between the idealized image of Diana and the harsh realities faced by the women depicted in each of the paintings and act as metaphors for the challenges women face within a patriarchal society.

Within the exhibition is a single outlier painting that features two interlocked bucks and acts as a throughline piece that carries forward the repeating symbolism of the male subject within the Dark Pastures series. Groff hearkens back to the mythos of Diana turning Actaeon the hunter into a deer, after which he runs off into the woods and is himself then hunted. The romanticized notion of communion with nature is juxtaposed with the harsh reality of human interference and exploitation of nature and wildlife. The human desire to connect with wildlife becomes a slippery slope, as human interactions such as leaving feed out or coaxing them into comfort with human interaction, the deer domesticate in a sense and become more emboldened to enter urban areas. With no natural predators, deer often become a nuisance around Pennsylvania and are often found in neighborhoods and city parks which results in communities having to initiate deer management programs (regulated hunts) to thin the deer populations.

Groff draws further parallels between being the hunter and the hunted through the lens of the feminine experience. This nuanced portrayal of femininity throughout the series of paintings challenges the misconceptions and stereotypes projected upon working-class women, whose perceived sexuality and excess are considered as grotesque. Groff incorporates elements of social commentary by reinterpreting historical symbols of wealth and status, such as fur headdresses, using unconventional materials to underscore the disconnect between traditional notions of luxury, objectification of the body, and contemporary values. The Huntress and Dark Pastures series further underscore themes of feminine power and self-preservation, alongside the complexities of the relationships and interactions between humans, nature, and wildlife. The exhibition invites viewers to reconsider traditional narratives and confront the unsettling truths and misconceptions of rural America.
