“Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal”: A Documentary on Netflix about the World’s Most Famous Infidelity Website
In the complex web of married life, where vows intertwine with the daily grind, a unique business spotted a lucrative niche: facilitating discreet liaisons for those seeking to step outside their matrimonial bonds without getting caught. This is the premise of “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal,” a compelling Netflix documentary that explores the notorious rise and dramatic fall of the internet’s most famous infidelity website, Ashley Madison.
By 2015, Ashley Madison had amassed between 35 and 40 million members, becoming a behemoth in the shadowy corners of online dating. “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal” gives viewers an inside look at the seismic repercussions of the massive hack that hit the company, laying bare the intimate secrets, fantasies, and compromising images of millions worldwide.
The Genesis of Ashley MadisonThe story of Ashley Madison begins in the year 2000, amidst the tech bubble, a time when giants like Yahoo and Google were just starting to ascend. It was against this backdrop that a dating site for married individuals seeking extramarital adventures came into being. Built on the pillars of secrecy, discretion, and data security, the site began to gather momentum in 2007, charting a course of exponential growth.
Ashley Madison’s appeal lay not just in its premise but in its execution. Targeting married men willing to invest in the promise of discreet affairs, the site chose its name from the two most popular female names at the time, an epitome of its straightforward yet secretive approach. The site vowed to safeguard its clients’ secrets while providing the connections they desired. The catch? Communication on the platform required purchasing credits, propelling Ashley Madison into a goldmine with over a million users by 2007.
The narrative took a controversial turn as the creators posited that an extramarital affair could potentially save a marriage. This bold claim sparked debate, backlash, and a media frenzy, catapulting the business into unprecedented success. By 2010, the user count soared to 7 million, with revenue skyrocketing. The company even flirted with going public before a catastrophic data breach turned the tables.
The Hack That Changed EverythingArguably the most gripping segment of “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal” is the account of the hack. The documentary introduces viewers to the cybersecurity experts hired by Ashley Madison, tracing their steps from Sweden as they scrambled to contain the fallout. The hackers released millions of email addresses in several batches, exposing clients to public scrutiny and jeopardizing countless marriages.
The Human ElementWhile the documentary features insights from security personnel, tech journalists, and members of Ashley Madison’s creative team, the heart of “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal” lies in the personal stories of the site’s users. These interviews reveal what drew them to Ashley Madison, their motivations, and the profound impact the data breach had on their lives and marriages.
Our Take“Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal” is an engaging documentary that steers clear of melodrama, offering instead a quasi-business narrative peppered with tales of infidelity and cyber intrusion. Across three entertaining episodes, it chronicles the rise, triumph, and eventual downfall of a tech enterprise rooted in secrecy and lies, culminating in a massive hack.
This documentary is more than just a recounting of events; it’s a reflection on privacy, the digital age, and the human quest for connection outside the boundaries of traditional vows. “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal” is a must-watch for those intrigued by the intersection of technology, business, and the all-too-human stories behind the headlines. Enjoy the ride.

Tate Britain Unveils Groundbreaking Exhibition of Women Artists: “Now You See Us”
London’s Tate Britain is proud to announce the opening of its groundbreaking exhibition, “Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920”. This comprehensive showcase marks a significant exploration into the vital role women have played in shaping the course of British art history over four centuries.
Spanning 400 years, “Now You See Us” eloquently narrates the challenges and triumphs faced by women artists in a profession historically dominated by men. Breaking barriers and defying societal expectations, these women paved the way for future generations, establishing a new paradigm for what it meant to be a woman in the British art world.
Featuring an impressive roster of over 100 artists, the exhibition brings to light the contributions of well-known figures like Artemisia Gentileschi, Angelica Kauffman, Julia Margaret Cameron, and Gwen John, among others. Equally, it shines a spotlight on lesser-known artists who are being rediscovered for their significant contributions to the art scene.
With more than 200 works on display, ranging from oil paintings and watercolours to sculptures and photographs, visitors are offered a unique opportunity to experience the diverse range of mediums these pioneering women worked in. “Now You See Us” begins its story in the Tudor court, showcasing the works of Levina Teerlinc and Esther Inglis, and extends through to the dawn of the 20th century—a period marked by women’s suffrage and the First World War.
The exhibition vividly illustrates the evolution of women’s roles within the art world, from their early contributions as professional portrait painters in the oil medium, to their involvement in Britain’s first public art exhibitions. Notably, it highlights the stories of artists like Mary Beale, Joan Carlile, Maria Verelst, Katherine Read, and Mary Black, who broke new ground and defied the norms of their times.
In addition to the artistic achievements of these women, “Now You See Us” also explores their connection to activism and their fight for equality in the art world. It recounts the tireless efforts of trailblazers like Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon, who campaigned for women’s admission into the Royal Academy Schools—an achievement that was met with the eventual admission of women artists to art schools and life drawing classes.
Concluding in the early 20th century, the exhibition showcases the works of Laura Knight and Ethel Walker, alongside other women artists who played a critical role in the emergence of modernism. Through their bold and ambitious endeavors, these women achieved critical acclaim and, importantly, secured their rightful place within professional institutions like the Royal Academy.
“Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920” at Tate Britain not only celebrates the achievements of these remarkable women but also encourages a reexamination of their impact on the art world. This exhibition is an unmissable event for anyone interested in exploring the rich tapestry of British art history through the lens of women who dared to challenge the status quo.

Eric Clapton’s Beloved “Wonderful Tonight” Guitar to Hit the Auction Block at Bonhams London
In a momentous event for music enthusiasts and collectors worldwide, Bonhams London is set to auction a piece of musical history that resonates with deep cultural significance – Eric Clapton’s 1974 000-28 Martin acoustic guitar. This revered instrument is not just any guitar; it’s the creative fountain from which flowed the timeless love song, “Wonderful Tonight.” The auction forms a part of the anticipated Rock, Pop & Film sale, scheduled for 12 June at Bonhams Knightsbridge, London, and carries an estimate of £300,000 – 400,000.
The significance of this guitar transcends its association with one of rock’s most venerated guitarists. It served as Clapton’s primary tool during the pinnacle of his songwriting and performance career in the seventies. “That guitar went everywhere with me,” reminisced Clapton. It was his companion in the creative process, contributing to the soundtrack of countless life milestones – from the joy of weddings to the solemnity of farewells.
A notable chapter in the guitar’s history was its contribution to Clapton’s charity efforts. In 1999, he parted ways with it, auctioning it off to benefit his Crossroads Centre. Reflecting on that moment, Clapton shared, “During the auction, the guys were all around me, and I felt myself starting to cry.” It’s a testament to the profound bond musicians often share with their instruments.
The guitar exhibits unique features testifying to Clapton’s personal touch, including a sticker reading “She’s in Love with a Rodeo Man,” a nod to Don Williams, one of Clapton’s musical influences. Furthermore, its headstock bears marks from cigarettes wedged under the strings, hallmarking Clapton’s playing sessions.
Claire Tole-Moir, Head of Bonhams Popular Culture department, notes, “This guitar is a singular collectible of immense cultural and historic value.” She elaborates on the song’s ageless appeal, remarking, “Written in 1976 as Clapton awaited his then-girlfriend (and future wife) Pattie Boyd, ‘Wonderful Tonight’ emerges as an ageless anthem with intergenerational appeal.”
Indeed, the song’s enduring popularity is evidenced by impressive streaming and viewing figures across major platforms, accentuated by heartfelt comments from fans worldwide. These digital engagements underline the profound global impact of Clapton’s work, solidifying “Wonderful Tonight” as a vital piece of the cultural fabric.
This June offers a rare opportunity for aficionados and collectors to own a piece of history imbued with stories of love, creativity, and transformation. The auction not only celebrates Clapton’s musical legacy but also serves as a poignant reminder of the guitar’s role as his steadfast companion through the seasons of his life. Its next chapter promises to be as enchanting as its storied past.
