Dorothy Dehner Retrospective Opens at Berry Campbell in New York

NEW YORK, NY – Berry Campbell is proud to present a comprehensive retrospective of the works of Dorothy Dehner (1901-1994), showcasing an extensive collection of her paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The exhibition, titled Dorothy Dehner: A Retrospective, will be on view from May 23 to June 22, 2024. This event marks the first significant exhibition of Dehner’s work since her retrospective at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1995.

The retrospective offers a detailed exploration of Dehner’s seventy-year artistic career, beginning with her early oil painting of a still life from 1936 and progressing through her iconic ink and watercolor abstract drawings from the 1940s and 1950s. These early drawings, executed using a “wet on wet” technique, highlight Dehner’s evolving artistic vision. The exhibition also addresses her personal life, noting her marriage to renowned sculptor David Smith, and how it influenced her delayed entry into sculpture after their divorce in 1950.

Visitors will find several early sculptures from the 1950s and 1960s, primarily created using the lost wax process. A particular highlight is Dehner’s rarely exhibited series of assemblages from the 1970s, known as I Ching. This series was influenced by John Cage’s avant-garde sounds and theories, introduced to Dehner by her friend Louise Nevelson. The totemic feel of Untitled (I Ching), constructed from thin wood pieces arranged in rhythmic patterns, stands out as a significant part of her oeuvre.

As her career progressed, Dehner began collaborating with fabricators to achieve her dream of creating large-scale sculptures. The centerpiece of the exhibition, Prelude and Fugue (1989), is among the largest she ever produced, standing over eight feet tall and wide and crafted from painted black steel. Another major work, Demeter’s Harrow (1990), features playful geometric forms made from Corten steel.

Joan M. Marter, Ph.D., President of the Dorothy Dehner Foundation, has been instrumental in placing Dehner within the context of other Abstract Expressionists. Marter’s research has led to numerous accolades, including a feature article in the Woman’s Art Journal in 2023, which discusses Dehner’s close relationship with Nevelson. Dehner’s work has been displayed in prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, including her totemic sculpture Encounter, currently on view.

Dehner is recognized alongside notable Abstract Expressionist sculptors such as Louise Nevelson, Louise Bourgeois, Herbert Ferber, Ibram Lassaw, David Hare, and David Smith. Her work is part of collections at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Storm King Art Center, The British Museum, and Dresden Museum, among many others. Berry Campbell proudly represents the Dorothy Dehner Foundation.

Dorothy Dehner: A Retrospective will have its opening reception on Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition is accompanied by a 64-page, fully illustrated catalog, featuring an introduction by Joan M. Marter, Ph.D., and a full-length essay by Sophie Lachowsky. A panel discussion led by Dr. Marter will take place at the gallery on Saturday, June 1, at 3 p.m.

“99”: A Prime Video Documentary on the Legendary 1999 Manchester United

Prime Video’s latest offering, “99,” takes us on a captivating journey through the legendary 1999 Manchester United team under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson. This documentary not only recounts the events of that historic year but also delves into what makes Manchester United one of England’s most powerful clubs. Central to this narrative is Sir Alex Ferguson, the influential manager who even tendered his resignation early in the season following a painful 3-0 defeat to Arsenal.

The Story of 1999: Alex Ferguson and the Manchester United Legacy

“99” provides an in-depth look at the formation of Manchester United players and the legacy of Matt Busby, the creator of the famed “Busby Babes.” These were players instilled with the spirit of Manchester United from a young age, a philosophy that continued to shape the club’s identity.

Star Players and Key Figures

The documentary features interviews with some of the best players from that era. Roy Keane stands out as the clear leader of the team, while Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole formed a formidable attacking duo. Ryan Giggs and David Beckham provided exceptional width and creativity from the flanks, and Peter Schmeichel guarded the goal in what would be his final year in English football.

Special attention is given to Dwight Yorke, whose charismatic personality shines through in his interviews. Although there are appearances by David Beckham and many others, the primary focus remains on Alex Ferguson. His work ethic, winning mentality, and emphasis on teamwork over individual accolades were pivotal in shaping the team’s success.

The Long Road to the Final

The 1999 season was fraught with challenges. Starting poorly, Manchester United faced a daunting semifinal against Juventus in the Champions League. In the Premier League, Arsène Wenger’s youthful and promising Arsenal squad seemed almost unbeatable.

The team grappled with significant injuries, a goalkeeper in less than stellar form, and a growing sense of disbelief from their surroundings. Yet, these struggles are what make the documentary so compelling, highlighting the epic nature of their journey and the admiration for what became the best season in the club’s history.

“99” is more than just a documentary; it’s a tribute to a team and a season that defined an era. From today, you can relive this incredible journey on Prime Video.

Enjoy the show!

“The 8 Show”: A Hilarious Comedy Series on Netflix Blending Thriller, Metaphor, and Entertainment

Starting today, Netflix brings us “The 8 Show,” an entertaining series that immerses viewers in a setting reminiscent of The Squid Game but with entirely different intentions. This show is driven by a rich sense of irony and humor, sometimes veering into the absurd.

“The 8 Show” is a comedic take on capitalism and social classes, filled with intrigue and unexpected surprises.

Plot

Eight players are gathered in a confined space to participate in a game set in a fictional scenario. They are recruited to play a game about inflation and time: either they spend time or money, while the prize and game duration fluctuate based on their expenditures. The players must work together to uncover societal rules, such as how prizes change depending on the floor they are on.

This game is a commentary on capitalism, inflation, social structures, and expenditures—what some might call economics.

“The 8 Show”: A Series Whose Strength Lies in Its NarrativeThe 8 ShowThe 8 Show

This Korean adaptation of Lord of the Flies (1954), William Golding’s classic literature piece, is highly entertaining. In “The 8 Show,” participants must navigate a world of exaggerated inflation and exorbitant prices, where everything, despite living in a community, boils down to social class and money. It’s capitalism in its purest form.

The series doesn’t shy away from critiquing the current state of affairs and housing prices in places like South Korea, where it takes almost a lifetime to pay off a mortgage in Seoul. Although the game is fictional, the metaphor of this comedic and socially critical game is undeniable.

However, “The 8 Show” is not Golding’s novel; it transitions from comedy to thriller as it evolves, with character tensions mounting due to the game’s rules and incidents. The eight-episode series progresses from surprise to surprise, becoming increasingly dark and macabre while maintaining its comedic tone. It’s a journey through unexpected twists, resulting in a psychedelic and surreal narrative.

Production

In terms of production, the series isn’t groundbreaking. It features a limited number of settings and doesn’t boast a complex structure at the production level. The focus is on the eight actors, their conflicts, and the script, plot, and situations rather than production design or ambiance. With good cinematography, the series presents a visually appealing proposal without aiming for high-budget aesthetics.

Our Opinion

At first glance, you might think of The Squid Game before starting “The 8 Show,” but this series, despite a seemingly similar premise, offers a completely different experience, constantly playing with deception.

This series knows how to start in one way, surprise with a twist, and end up being unlike anything you initially expected. Enjoy the ride.

Second Season of “Outer Range” on Prime Video

Prime Video’s “Outer Range” returns with its second season, continuing to blur the lines between genres in an intriguing and unique manner. This series intricately weaves time travel with a quintessentially American narrative of land struggles and familial tragedies, all while being enveloped in mysteries at a contemplative pace that occasionally veers into the intimate.

Not quite fitting neatly into any one genre, “Outer Range” is neither a traditional drama nor pure science fiction. Instead, it stands out for its adept fusion of seemingly incompatible genres and settings, creating a unique atmosphere and mood that is its own. This series is designed for a niche audience; it’s the kind of show that, if it captures your attention, holds on tight with its special, slow rhythm and American mysteries.

About the Series

Remember the way “Twin Peaks” combined the traditional and the magical with supernatural mystery in a rural landscape? “Outer Range” strikes a similar chord but transports us to Wyoming in a series that is more intimate than David Lynch’s creation, focusing more on character strength. The characters’ stories build the scenes of this ensemble drama, which is almost indefinable, balancing magically realistic elements in a way that feels both extravagant and grounded, similar to “Twin Peaks,” but with a more realistic bent.

The series also explores time travel and a mysterious well that appears on the flatlands. The vast plains of North America have always been a fertile ground for stories and conjectures, some fantastic and others, like in this case, set against the backdrop of Wyoming’s grand ranches.

Primarily, “Outer Range” is an actor’s series, featuring Josh Brolin at the helm of a talented cast. However, no single actor dominates the show, as “Outer Range” thrives on a rich tapestry of characters and stories that blend religion, tradition, family, and sorrow into a narrative that may be emotionally deep for those seeking mere sci-fi adventure and possibly too fantastical for those desiring something more grounded. Yet, these dual aspects combine well in an eccentric and unconventional mix that is both traditional and magical, yet also tinged with melancholy.

“Outer Range” is not only well-filmed but features performances by actors given the chance to shine through their complex and dramatic roles. It may not be for everyone, perhaps it’s not meant for anyone, but the second season is here for those fascinated by its unique combination of melancholy and science fiction.

Enjoy the second season of “Outer Range,” a series that might just captivate you with its blend of genres in an unexpectedly moving way.

“Bridgerton” Season 3 – A Dazzling Fusion of Classic Romance and Modern Gossip

Netflix’s “Bridgerton” has once again captivated audiences with its third season, released in two parts – the first dropped on May 16, with the finale landing on June 13. This historical drama, far from your conventional history lesson, continues to unravel the secrets of the noble Bridgerton family, whose scandalous bedroom tales are as opulent as their lavish balls.

This season, “Bridgerton” retains its charm as one of Netflix’s recent triumphs, blending the freshness, vivacity, and authenticity that fans have come to adore.

Bridgerton 3Bridgerton 3Season 3 Highlights

At the heart of the season is Penelope Featherington, who leads a double life as a high society gossip columnist. Through her writings, she exposes the clandestine affairs of London’s elite while navigating her public persona in a quest for matrimonial bliss. This dual existence offers a compelling glimpse into the challenges faced by women of the era, each seeking their place in a rigid social hierarchy.

“Bridgerton” masterfully combines the genteel romance of a Jane Austen novel with the scandalous whispers akin to “Gossip Girl.” Inspired by Julia Quinn’s novels, the series crafts a world that flips classical romance on its head, infusing it with a modern sensibility that appeals to today’s audience. Netflix has transformed Quinn’s vision into a visual feast, replete with vibrant settings and characters that embody youth and exuberance, challenging period drama conventions with a bold, contemporary twist.

The series has struck a chord with younger viewers, drawn to its unconventional take on historical themes and its focus on youthful narratives of love, gossip, and social connections. “Bridgerton” transports its audience to a version of London filled with the splendor, elegance, and luxury of the Regency era, much like “Gossip Girl” did with New York, but with its own unique flair.

Our Take

The latest chapter in Penelope and Colin’s story is imbued with the joy and spirit that has endeared “Bridgerton” to its fans, promising another successful installment in the series. It’s a bittersweet wait for the conclusion of this enchanting tale, which promises more charm, sophistication, and intrigue.

“Bridgerton” season 3 epitomizes the series’ ability to blend the allure of historical romance with the allure of modern-day gossip, creating a compelling narrative that both respects and reinvents its genre. Its success lies in its appeal to a generation that craves stories of beauty, elegance, and luxury, all while challenging the norms and expectations of conventional period dramas.

Movie on Netflix: “Monster” – A Cinematic Journey into Silence and Suspense

Netflix’s latest offering from Indonesia, “Monster”, directed by Rako Prijanto, marks a bold venture into the realm of visual storytelling. This film, revolving around the harrowing tale of child abduction, stands out not just for its storyline but for its audacious refusal to rely on dialogue, choosing instead to communicate its narrative through sound effects, editing, and suspense.

At its core, “Monster” is a testament to the power of visual cinema. It challenges conventional storytelling by eliminating dialogue, thus pushing the boundaries of narrative techniques. The film’s reliance on visual cues, coupled with meticulously chosen shots, creates an immersive experience that captivates the audience from the get-go.

Plot OverviewMonsterMonster

The narrative unfolds with the kidnapping of two children by a sinister figure sporting a cap and a dense beard. In a twist of fate, the girl manages to free herself, setting the stage for a gripping tale of survival and escape.

A Visual Feast for Cinema Enthusiasts

“Monster” emerges as a compelling watch for those who cherish the visual over the theatrical in cinema. The absence of dialogue elevates the visual storytelling, making every frame crucial and every cut deliberate. This approach not only showcases Rako Prijanto’s directorial prowess but also highlights the film’s technical excellence. From cinematography to editing, every element works in harmony to craft an atmosphere brimming with suspense and tension.

Sound – The Unspoken Protagonist

Although “Monster” opts to sideline dialogue, it masterfully utilizes sound to amplify its storytelling. The auditory landscape of the film, filled with door creaks, eerie music, and stark sound contrasts, adds an extra layer of tension, making the silence all the more palpable and unsettling.

Final Thoughts

“Monster” is a daring exploration of cinema’s potential to convey profound narratives without words. It’s a film that relies on the strength of its visual and auditory elements, proving that storytelling extends beyond spoken language. Rako Prijanto’s direction is commendable, as he delivers a pure suspense thriller that resonates with the essence of cinematic art.

While “Monster” might not be the first of its kind in the horror genre to eschew dialogue, its execution exemplifies the risks involved in deviating from normative cinematic practices. Nonetheless, it triumphs in creating an enveloping atmosphere of terror, making it a distinctive and exquisite choice for aficionados of the genre.

In a world where cinema is often bogged down by didactic narratives and social commentaries, “Monster” stands out as a piece of pure entertainment. It’s a bold reminder of the power of visual storytelling and the infinite possibilities that lie within the craft of filmmaking.

Mary Heilmann’s “Daydream Nation” – A Journey Through Abstract Memory at Hauser & Wirth

In the bustling heart of New York’s art scene, Hauser & Wirth’s 22nd Street gallery has become a sanctuary for those seeking refuge in the vibrant and abstract world of Mary Heilmann. The gallery is currently home to “Daydream Nation,” an exhibition that explores Heilmann’s captivating engagement with drawing as a medium to transcribe memory and invoke daydreams. Curated by Gary Simmons, a distinguished artist in his own right and a friend, former student, and colleague of Heilmann’s from New York’s School of Visual Arts, the show offers a deep dive into the artist’s psyche and creative process.

Running until 26 July 2024, “Daydream Nation” showcases a selection of rarely and never-before-seen works on paper from the 1970s to the early 2000s. These pieces reveal Heilmann’s unique ability to distill complex images and ideas into simplified geometric forms and abstract gestural marks. This exhibition serves not only as a celebration of Heilmann’s exceptional talent but also as an intimate exploration of how drawing acts as a form of daydreaming for her—conjuring the sights, sounds, and events of her past travels and her imagined futures.

Gary Simmons reflects on his long-standing relationship with Heilmann, saying, “I’ve known Mary through many chapters of my life. Selecting these works and collaborating with her, I’ve learned more about her practice than I thought possible. In her drawings and paintings, there’s this sense of a dreamscape, a mosaic of her travels through the desert and from coast to coast.”

Heilmann, renowned for her versatility across mediums and her playful combination of disparate works in installations, takes a whimsical yet conceptually rigorous approach to “Daydream Nation.” The exhibition features works on paper that range from watercolor studies intended for larger paintings to standalone pieces that command the space as paintings on paper. Additionally, a selection of her ceramic sculptures and sculptural chairs are on display, creating an immersive environment that reflects Heilmann’s methodical approach to exhibition-making. Heilmann’s practice of working in series, revisiting and reimagining arrangements of form and color over time, is evident in the recurring motifs of chairs, rosebuds, spirals, waves, and webs present in the show.

An intriguing aspect of “Daydream Nation” is a new mural-like installation that expands an existing work into a novel form of expression. This seventh wall drawing by Heilmann, developed in conversation with Simmons, marks a significant exploration of the monumental scale both artists find fascinating in their respective practices.

The exhibition’s title, borrowed from Sonic Youth’s seminal 1988 album “Daydream Nation,” speaks to Heilmann’s sustained interest in daydreaming as a creative exercise and the role of travel in her creative process. It also situates her work within a broader narrative of youthful rebellion and innovation, echoing her experiences in New York City since 1968. This city has served as a constant source of energy and inspiration for Heilmann, both personally and professionally.

Mary Heilmann, a figure deeply influenced by the 1960s counterculture, the free speech movement, and the surf ethos of her native California, stands among the most influential abstract painters of her generation. Her work deftly combines the analytical geometries of Minimalism with the spontaneous ethos of the Beat Generation, distinguished by an often unorthodox and always joyful approach to color and form.

Heilmann’s transition from ceramics to painting upon her move to New York in 1968 marked a rebellious turn against the prevailing artistic norms of the time. Opting for painting, she ventured beyond the decrees of modern, non-representational formalism, focusing instead on content-driven creativity. Over the years, Heilmann’s compositions have evolved to evoke a myriad of associations, utilizing a basic geometrical vocabulary while introducing slight eccentricities that challenge and engage the viewer.

In addition to “Daydream Nation” at Hauser & Wirth, Heilmann’s celestial works from 1967-1971 are currently on long-term view at Dia Beacon in the presentation “Mary Heilmann. Starry Night,” offering another opportunity to immerse oneself in her abstract explorations.

“Daydream Nation” stands as a testament to Mary Heilmann’s enduring legacy as an artist who continuously redefines the boundaries of abstract painting, inviting viewers to traverse the landscapes of memory and imagination through her vibrant and thought-provoking works.

Hannah Starkey’s “In Real Life” Exhibition at Maureen Paley, London

Maureen Paley is honored to announce the return of Hannah Starkey with her eighth solo show at the gallery, a continuation of the profound narrative first explored in her survey exhibition “In Real Life” at the Hepworth Wakefield in 2022. Starkey’s work, celebrated for its introspective look at the female experience, currently graces two Hayward Gallery Touring exhibitions, “Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood” and “After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989 – 2024,” alongside “Acts of Resistance: Photography, Feminisms and the Art of Protest” at the South London Gallery, a collaboration with the V&A, London.

Through her large-scale photographs, Starkey investigates the portrayal of women in contemporary culture, capturing moments of everyday life that expand the narrative around female experience. Her images, often showcasing women in moments of private reflection or social interaction, bring a monumental significance to what might otherwise remain unnoticed, embodying the essence of the female gaze.

Starkey eloquently expresses the weight of observation that young women carry, stating, “You are very aware as a young woman that you are the observed, and you are expected to perform for the eye. We’re conditioned to the point where we observe ourselves being observed, and we operate out of that language, or those dynamics. My work is a way of speaking to women about how you don’t always need to perform for the gaze, that there is more to being female than being seen.”

Her approach to photography is collaborative and considerate; Starkey works closely with her subjects to discuss composition and poses, ensuring their comfort and consent with the images. This process is vital to challenging “the camera’s consuming eye,” and fostering a sense of agency and esteem among those she photographs. A striking example of her work, Untitled, January 2023, features young women photographing each other, a scene from her collaboration with students from Wakefield’s CAPA College. This initiative aimed to counteract the harmful effects of digital manipulation on self-perception by creating a space filled with empathy and joy.

Starkey’s technique of using glass and reflections to mediate the viewer’s access to her subjects adds a layer of complexity to her images, inviting a deliberate and contemplative engagement. Through this method, she aims to fragment and obscure the female form, challenging the viewer’s gaze and disrupting conventional consumption of women’s images.

Born in 1971 in Belfast and now residing in London, Hannah Starkey has carved a distinguished path in the world of photography. Her accolades include winning the Freelands Award with The Hepworth Wakefield in 2019, which led to a major survey exhibition. Starkey’s solo and group exhibitions span globally, showcasing her commitment to exploring themes of femininity, identity, and societal norms through her lens.

In 2018, MACK published “Hannah Starkey: Photographs 1997-2017,” a comprehensive look at her two decades of work, followed by a monograph published alongside her “In Real Life” exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield in 2022. These publications offer an in-depth exploration of Starkey’s significant contribution to contemporary photography and the ongoing dialogue about the female gaze.

The “In Real Life” exhibition at Maureen Paley, running from 24 May to 14 July 2024, invites viewers to immerse themselves in Hannah Starkey’s visionary world, one where the intricacies of female existence are both celebrated and examined with a tender, yet critical eye.
