“MaXXXine”- Film review: director Ti West completes his trilogy by revealing his cards and paying tribute to cinema

“MaXXXine” is a horror movie written and directed by Ti West starring Mia Goth. With Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Monaghan and Kevin Bacon.

The adventures of this most psychopathic and unbalanced girl come to an end with a film full of tributes to cinema in a film that exudes love for the seventh art everywhere.

A film that you will enjoy more the more cinephile you are and, if you have lived the eighties, the better. A profound tribute to cinema and the deep conviction of its author, Ti West, in his own talent.

A new kind of Quentin Tarantino who pays homage to everything, who seems to have seen it all and who, like Wes Craven, allows himself to make a self-aware horror film that ultimately reflects on horror cinema itself and, beyond that, on the art of filmmaking itself.

Funny, terrifying and fast-paced, a film that knows from the first moment why it was born and where it is going despite its controlled air of uncontrollability.

Plot

Maxine is a girl with one purpose in life: to be a star. She was born to be a star and she will not let up. Now is the right time, the 80’s, and in the city of her dreams, Los Angeles, to fulfill it.

But she is not alone, because a Satanist psychopath is sowing terror in Los Angeles, murdering and leaving his mark, a five-pointed star.

MaXXXineAbout the movie

If you haven’t seen the first two parts, it will take you about three shots to realize the big truth: this guy, Ti West, knows a lot about cinema. Shot for shot, the film is a constant homage to cinema in which cinema is talked about, cinema is parodied, and there is a constant reference to some classic film in almost every shot.

Not surprisingly, it is a film about the art of filmmaking that begins with a quote from none other than Bette Davis.

“MaXXXine” is a film with an excellent setting that will let us tour some of the Hollywood sets and put us in the atmosphere of that time that mixed puritanism with avant-garde in an era marked by pop art and Hollywood iconography. A diffuse, explosive mixture full of color, video clubs and jackets with shoulder pads.

And, on the other hand, the eighties were a glorious time for B-movies like the film in which the leading actress is going to work. “MaXXXine” is a tribute to horror films, to B movies and those wonderful places that were the video stores.

Another aspect: the soundtrack and its catchy eighties rhythm, with some of the greatest hits of the time. Almost all of them will ring a bell.

And last but not least, the girl who carries the weight of this film and the previous ones, the fantastic Mia Goth, who thanks to these films has become, precisely, a star as Maxine in the movie. Perfect in the complicated role of heroine as well as villain, timid as well as ruthless and victim as well as executioner.

Our opinion

A tribute to Hollywood created from self-awareness, veneration, irony and sarcasm.

A great ending to this horror trilogy that will give much to talk about in the coming years.

Steve Locke: “the fire next time” – MASS MoCA

New York-based artist Steve Locke’s exhibition the fire next time is a meditation on uniquely American forms of violence directed at Black and queer people. In his interdisciplinary practice, Locke engages issues of identity, desire, race, violence, and memory, revealing as much tenderness and humor as he does brutality. Over the course of his decades-long career, Locke has largely worked in painting. Primarily concerned with how we ascribe meaning to portraiture while exploring the relationships between and among men, in recent years Locke has introduced a more personal, political, and critical engagement with histories of racism and anti-Blackness, the Western canon of art history, and American society. the fire next time takes its title from a book by James Baldwin, first published in 1963 amid the growing civil rights movement. Locke’s exhibition includes a MASS MoCA-commissioned sculptural installation; a new series of freestanding paintings; #Killers (2017-ongoing), a series of hand-drawn portraits of American mass murderers and accused or acquitted killers; and a data-driven site-specific installation, A Partial List of Unarmed African-Americans Who Were Killed By Police or Who Died in Police Custody During My Sabbatical from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, 2014-2015 (2016), among other new and recent works.

Steve Locke (b.1963) was born in Cleveland, OH and lives and works in the Hudson Valley, NY. Rebel Moon is a two part movie directed by Zac Snyder.

Today Netflix brings a gift to Zac Snyder fans, a new montage of the same story: many, many new features. In total, each movie includes about 60 minutes of bonus material.

“Rebel Moon Director’s Cut” was the network’s big bet earlier this year to compete with the Dune trilogy and the successful Disney+ series based on Star Wars.

Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness

Both films feature the Zac Snyder style in a Star Wars story of their own: a cosmic epic about rebellion against the mighty empire. Excessive, violent and brutal in the editing, it seems that this excessive style did not like too much, neither the specialized critics nor the general public, who soon forgot the latest ideas of Zac Snyder, who has already made several productions for Netflix.

Zac Snyder’s excessive and rocking style has not been successful since he arrived at Netflix, and it seems that, simply, the formula that made such an impact years ago, is starting to wear out.

That said, if you liked the first two parts (the second was spectacular and with a frenetic pace), you will surely appreciate these two new installments, this time even more exceisvas visually and with new elements that complete this new universe of Zac Snyder in the purest Star Wars style.

Funny as always, and with a humor only suitable for the little ones, this movie is an ideal occasion to leave the little ones in front of the TV and relax, even if only a little.

Plot

Our favorite squirrel is a researcher and loves research, especially marine research.

Science is compromised when Sandy Cheeks sees the lab she used to work for as a scientist turned into a water park. So she decides to travel to Houston, Texas, along with her friend SpongeBob to see what has happened and fix the issue.

About the movie

Our friend SpongeBob has been entertaining several generations of children for 25 years and the characters of this popular series have dazzled and entertained with their particular (and sometimes surreal) sense of humor. The characters have starred in series and movies and now it is the turn of the investigative squirrel, Arenita Cheeks, in an adventure with SpongeBob himself that, for sure, will please the youngest.

No, if you are older, don’t bother to understand it because several generations of parents have remained like you: stunned by the success of this sense of humor of these crazy and funny characters.

The film, essentially animated, mixes real images with the animation itself at times, for humans only.

You know, in between this crazy and surreal show, musical numbers with funny songs and some jokes, also for adults.

If you are parents, I can’t tell you anything new about these characters, and if you are going to be, I’m afraid they will be part of your lives for years to come, whether you want them to or not.

So, start savoring the particular sense of humor of SpongeBob and his friends in this new adventure in Texas.

“Borderless Fog” Thriller from Indonesia on Netflix: a story of mystery and a lot of police tension

“Borderless Fog” is an Indonesian thriller movie starring Putri Marino, Yoga Pratama and Lukman Sadi.

Another interesting thriller that comes to us from Indonesia in which, this time, jurisdictions are mixed and between the borders of Malaysia and Indonesia to get into very lurid topics, but without the film wanting to go beyond the thriller.

In addition, it informs us about a terrible situation on the island of Borneo in a case that, although fictional, has many tinges of reality.

A well-set thriller that mixes superstition with borderline reality in a complicated place.

Plot

On the island of Borneo, between Malaysia and Indonesia, a policewoman arrives from Jakarta to investigate a terrible crime: two decapitated men. There she is not well received, but her investigations lead her to the legend of Ambong, a kind of ghost that lives in the fog of the jungle.

But the detective gradually discovers a much more macabre and daunting reality.

About the film

Above all, “Borderless Fog” is a good thriller: well paced, well acted and a plot that, sticking to its genre, manages to entertain and, incidentally, to make us encounter the difficult reality between the borders of Malaysia and Indonesia and the shady business there: human trafficking.

But “Borderless Fog” is not a film that comes to make a political denunciation of a social reality, it is basically a well handled thriller that seeks to shock and entertain.

A thriller with good characters, with a couple of interesting detectives and secondary characters that give rhythm to the story in an intelligently elaborated script that leaves brushstrokes of the mystery little by little.

The film has quality also in the photographic aspect, but without making an impact for its images: having a good photography, it prefers to focus on being a correct thriller, without looking for originality neither in its rhythmic nor thematic or aesthetic aspects.

A good thriller that is neither original nor surprising, but it does achieve what it sets out to do: to show a reality through a fictional story that entertains.

A good violent crime film with a sad, very sad reality that underlies the fiction itself.

Our opinion

Good mystery thriller, one of those macabre murders that, thanks to a good script, manages to interest and carry the film aesthetically, rhythmically and argumentatively well achieved.
