How Microtransactions are Shaping the Future of Online Games
Microtransactions are a pretty popular word in the gaming community and have gained attention for both positive and negative reasons. Some players might as well go to a limit and say that microtransactions can spark a pretty heated debate in an online gaming community faster than any other fight. These small game purchases have evolved from being an annoyance to a massive factor that is now backing up the gaming industry. Over the years, microtransactions have changed the way we play and the way we pay for online games. Whether we talk about a limited edition, a character, or a massive weapon that can help us with the next challenge, these microtransactions have now become an irresistible part of the gaming landscape.
And let’s be honest: if you play online games like Blox Fruits, you may have clicked on a Blox Fruits shop to see what game items they have available to purchase. But have you ever wondered how these microtransactions are shaping the world of online gaming and how they can be both exciting and a little terrifying at the same time?
The Rise of Microtransactions: From Optional Extras to Essential PurchasesBefore we were introduced to these microtransactions, online games had expansion packs. We are pretty sure that if you are a 90s kid who has grown up playing video games, you might be aware of these expansion packs. We all played a game for months or maybe a year, and then, one fine day, the game developers would release an entirely new set of levels, characters, or storylines for a premium price. These were called the expansion packs, introduced way before microtransactions, and offered additional content and rewards for those who wanted to enhance their gaming experience.
After these expansion packs became a little outdated, we were introduced to the era of downloadable content. These DLCs offered small and more frequent updates to the video games where players could pick what item they wanted to purchase next. Initially, the small updates seemed like a great way to customize the gaming experience and pay only for what we wanted, but then a lot changed after a few years when the gates opened to microtransactions.
We became aware of microtransactions when they were made available with free-to-play games. While these games were free to install and play as well, the experience wasn’t as thrilling as we had expected. Unless you were willing to pay the money, your gaming experience would be limited to basic levels and challenges that you could easily conquer in an hour or so. Since players were willing to make their gaming experience enjoyable, they started spending money on these transactions, and the gaming industry quickly realized how beneficial these small microtransactions could be.
While at first, these microtransactions were supposed to be micro, they were not. These tiny purchases add up quickly, especially when a player is willing to spend $100 on a special bundle that would only last them for 2 to 3 days. Nowadays, a lot of online games are so heavily monetized that it is impossible to play a particular game without spending a great amount of money.
The Impact of Microtransactions on Game DesignSo, have these microtransactions only affected how we spend on games, or is there more to that? Well, after years of research, we can say that these microtransactions have also shaped the gaming industry and have had a significant impact on game design. Now, developers are not only creating games; They are creating them while keeping the monetization strategies in mind. Due to the shift, there have been some pretty noticeable changes in the way many online games are designed.
For example, if we talk about any video game with a progression system, this free-to-play title can quickly make you grind. If you want to level up your character, unlock a new weapon, or access a special feature, you will spend days, or maybe even weeks, working hard and trying to pass all these levels. Or you can simply take the easy way out and make a purchase from the game shop. While these games test your patience, they also know that you will cave and pay your way to the top of the leaderboard.
What Does the Future of Microtransactions Look LikeSo, what does the future of these microtransactions look like? Well, we can say that it will more likely remain the same as long as people have enough money to spend. Gaming developers and publishers will continue to find new ways to incorporate these microtransactions into their games.
One trend that we will be more likely to see grow is the battle pass system popularised by games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: War Zone. These battle passes offer multiple rewards that players can unlock by completing some game challenges. The catch here is that to get the best rewards, you need to make a small purchase to get the premium pass. Battle Pass has been a successful model as it offers both rewards and a direct way to enhance your gaming experience.
Wrapping UpSo, whether you consider these microtransactions as a harmless way to support gaming developers or as an unnecessary evil, we cannot deny that they have revolutionized the gaming industry. These microtransactions have changed how the games are made, how they are played, and how well they can be monetized. And while the future of microtransactions is still debatable, one thing that we can save with confidence is that they are not going anywhere.

“Mission Cross” – A Korean Action-Comedy on Netflix
“Mission Cross” is a Korean comedy thriller starring Hwang Jung-min and Yum Jung-ah. It is directed by Lee Myeong-hoon.
Combining elements of comedy and thriller, “Mission Cross” turns the mundane life of a married couple upside down in a style reminiscent of the iconic “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (2005). This film manages to inject new life into the typical boring marriage trope, transforming it into an action-packed thriller with role reversals that are both amusing and captivating.
While it may not break new ground, the film’s greatest strength lies in its humor, which elicited genuine laughter from me through clever lines and engaging dialogue. This particular brand of humor is a staple of the Korean film industry, and although the production values may not be top-tier, the entertainment quotient is undeniably high.
Plot OverviewMeet Mi-sun, a formidable police officer who excels at taking down the most dangerous criminals in Seoul. Her husband, Gang-mu, appears to be a mild-mannered housekeeper but has a penchant for pilfering money from her. The plot thickens when a former associate of Gang-mu’s resurfaces, revealing that he was actually an undercover agent seven years ago.
About the Film“Mission Cross” endeavors to be primarily a comedy, relying heavily on the exaggerated performances of its two main actors. Their ability to unleash their full comedic potential is the film’s cornerstone. The supporting cast also excels in this regard, maximizing their comic prowess to great effect.
On the flip side, the film’s action elements are somewhat underwhelming. The production is modest and fails to shine in terms of action sequences, pacing, or plot intricacies, which revolve around a convoluted mix of Russian mafias and illegal arms trafficking. In this aspect, the film stumbles, with its comedic aspects far outshining the thriller components.
“Mission Cross” was released with little fanfare, almost devoid of advertising, quietly landing on a major streaming platform. Can it become an unexpected hit? That remains uncertain. The film is too formulaic and generic to stand out significantly among a sea of similar titles.
However, it does offer solid entertainment without bringing anything particularly novel to the table. The performances of the two lead actors, who embrace their comedic, vibrant, and human sides, are the film’s redeeming qualities.
Our Opinion“Mission Cross” may not revolutionize the genre, but it provides an enjoyable experience, largely thanks to its charismatic leads. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the laughs.

“Inside the Mind of a Dog” A Documentary on Netflix: Delightfully Canine
“Inside the Mind of a Dog” is a Netflix documentary directed by Andy Mitchell, and narrated by Rob Lowe.
The dog stands as the most diverse creature to ever grace our planet: can a Chihuahua and a Great Dane, or a Labrador for that matter, have anything in common… or perhaps they do? Dogs are essentially an evolution of wolves, sharing an astounding 99% of their DNA with them. In the prehistoric era, when humans excelled as hunters, certain wolves trailed behind them, benefiting from the leftover food. This initiated a profound companionship that has endured through the ages.
In the wild, companionship triumphs, and dogs epitomize the essence of companionship.
“Inside the Mind of a Dog” is a documentary celebrating man’s best friend, the dog. Every dog is distinct, with an individual personality that comprehends and interacts with humans in a uniquely remarkable way.
In this documentary, we accompany several scientists as they explore the canine mind to uncover its functioning, the mechanisms it employs, and its remarkable ability to understand humans.
About the DocumentaryDogs are incredibly versatile, performing a multitude of tasks: from assisting in locating whales, venturing into space, to even holding public office. Remarkably, a Golden Retriever named Max has been elected mayor of Idyllwild, California, and has secured this position for three consecutive terms.
Within the canine realm, there are puppies trained to assist humans, especially those with disabilities, enhancing their quality of life. This documentary takes us inside one such academy, providing an in-depth look at the training process and the intricacies of the canine mind.
Additionally, we delve into the neurological aspects of dogs, examining specific brain regions that differentiate one dog from another, and exploring why some dogs are more timid while others exhibit fearless behavior.
Our Opinion“Inside the Mind of a Dog” is an enchanting documentary, sure to captivate dog lovers with its plethora of anecdotes and heartwarming tales. Above all, it serves as a fascinating resource, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of our loyal, four-legged companions.
Enjoy this delightful journey.

Kejoo Park: “Echoes in Time” – Space776 Gallery, New York.
Space776 Gallery is pleased to present Kejoo Park’s solo exhibition, Echoes in Time, on view from July 26 through August 8, 2024, curated by Irene Gong. This marks Kejoo Park’s inaugural solo exhibition in New York after nearly 35 years of expanding her artistic and architectural footprint in Germany and Switzerland.
Since the mid-1980s, Korean-American conceptual artist and landscape architect Kejoo Park has employed painting, sculpture, performance, and site-specific installations to deeply contemplate the interactive harmony between humans and nature. Drawing from Eastern philosophies like Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism native to Korea, as well as Western philosophies and cultures from her experiences in Germany, Park’s work is a fusion of these influences. This exhibition showcases pieces from her recent and previous series, including Song of the Earth (2019-2021), Wanderer (2022), and
Visible-Invisible (2024).
Park’s art delves into the intricate relationships between humanity and the natural world through diverse artistic mediums, often exploring site-specific and spatial themes.
Central to her artistic philosophy is dualism, which she views as inherently interdependent. By bridging contrasting elements of life, such as life and death, inner and outer, and illusion and reality, Park creates a dialogue within her art that unites these opposites rather than allowing them to clash.

From the Song of the Earth series, Kejoo Park drew inspiration from Gustav Mahler’s late-Romantic composition Das Lied von der Erde, which translates to The song of the Earth in English. Integrating song cycle and symphony, Mahler conveyed the fragility of life during a difficult period. After reading Hans Bethge’s collection of 83 ancient Chinese poems titled Die Chinesische Flöte (‘The Chinese Flute’), Mahler was captivated by the beauty of nature and selected 7 poems, which he adapted into verses for Das Lied von der Erde. These verses portray the cycle of living, parting, and salvation. Kejoo Park, inspired by Mahler’s Taoistic symphony, particularly resonated with verses from a poem by the Tang Dynasty Chinese poet Li Bai. Blending Eastern and Western influences, she conceived paintings while repeatedly listening to Mahler’s compositions in her studio, transforming her musical and poetic reflections into tangible spirituality on canvas. Three selected works from this exploration are displayed in our Echoes in Time exhibition: Drinking song of the sorrow of the Earth (2021), The lonely one in autumn 1 (2021), and On youth (2021).
Like Mahler, who affectionately referred to himself as a wanderer of the earth, Park similarly embraces this identity. She recognizes nature as a holistic system of giving and receiving, reviving and surviving, independent yet interdependent. Utilizing the drawing techniques of Eastern traditional art, she transfers her visual memories of landscapes onto canvas, capturing the resilience of nature from direct encounters. At the gallery, she showcases Landscape Rondo (2020) and Memory 1 (2022), embodying the cyclical return of nature through time.
Her recent Visible-Invisible series draws inspiration from Joseph Beuys’s final project,
7000 Eichen (‘7000 Oaks’), a long-term environmental art initiative where participants
planted oak trees paired with basalt stones, blending environmental activism with public art. In this context, the sculptures in Park’s series are subtle and blend into their surroundings, visible to those who reflect deeply on their Taoist-inspired meanings.
Developing her artistic language, Kejoo Park employs stone as a metaphor for nature’s resilience throughout the Visible-Invisible series. Stones, existing long before humanity, symbolize nature’s enduring presence amidst human impermanence. Conversely, trees signify growth and transition.
Within the Visible-Invisible series, Park presents three Homage to Beuys and six Loci paintings. They are titled with Latin words that pay homage to Beuys: “Homage” from Homage of Beuys and “Loci” from Loci, translating to “homage” as reverence and “loci” as a place or locality. Demonstrating respect for space and in-situ context, Park offers a unique interpretation of encountering Beuys’s installations in New York, crossing boundaries between art and architecture.
Integrating accumulated architectural techniques in making art, Park structures the art from conception to completion: spatial observation, systematic research, and digital rendering. Despite this constructed approach, Park embraces duality, distorting grids, and challenging perspectives to seek the balance between structured intention and organic freedom in her compositions.
Created in conjunction, Kejoo Park suspends site-specific sculptural installations made of stone and oak trees from the gallery ceiling. In one corner of the gallery, she exhibits a few pieces from her private collection of Joseph Beuys’s photographs and prints as homage. These works are on view only during the exhibition period to deliver an immersive experience to the audience.
Through Echoes in Time, Kejoo Park showcases a comprehensive overview of her multidisciplinary artistic practice, foundational principles of harmony, and sources of inspiration drawn from insightful channels in everyday life. Human life is part of a cycle in nature where one discovers, grows, sustains, and withers in time. Park’s universe structures philosophical thoughts in various forms of art, and she announces her intention to continue her explorations in the transient wild of Earth.

Born in 1956 in Daejeon, Korea, Kejoo Park lives and works in Frankfurt and New York. She earned a BFA in Painting from Cornell University, studied at Pratt Institute and The Art Students League of New York, and earned an MLA in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University.
As a Korean-American conceptual and multimedia artist, Kejoo Park works with various media, including painting, sculpture, performance, and site-specific installations. Her art explores the complex relationships between humanity and nature, emphasizing the dualism of internal and external existence and the interplay between natural and artificial elements. In her large-scale public art projects, she merges diverse genres such as music, poetry, and philosophy. Developing her unique artistic language, she combines techniques learned from art and architectural studies and expands her artistic practices to express the embodiment of Western and Eastern culture.
As a landscape architect, she has collaborated with architects, including I.M. Pei and Mario Campi, conducting international competitions and projects worldwide. She also served as an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Ecology at the University of Stuttgart in Germany.
Her work has been exhibited at Gallery Reitz, Zurich, Switzerland (2024); Gallery Uhn, Königstein, Germany (2023); Galerie Anna 25, Berlin, Germany (2023); Kunstverein Familie Montez, Frankfurt, Germany (2022); Galerie Uhn, Königstein, Germany (2022); Galerie Rieder, München, Germany (2021); Galerie Anna 25, Berlin, Germany (2019); Galerie Rieder, München, Germany (2019); Galerie Artstation, Zürich, Switzerland (2018); Galerie Hübner & Hübner, Frankfurt, Germany (2018); Galerie Rieder, München, Germany (2017); Galerie am Hirschengraben, Zurich, Switzerland (2017); Stadtgalerie, Bad Soden am Taunus, Germany (2017); Galerie Anna 25, Berlin, Germany (2016); Galerie Tuttiart, Luzern, Switzerland (2016); Galerie Hübner & Hübner, Frankfurt, Germany (2015); the Permanent Collection of Pierre Soulages at the Museum Ludwig, Koblenz, Germany (2014).

“The Shakedown” Movie on Prime Video: A Darkly Humorous Comedy That Neither Surprises Nor Shocks but Thoroughly Entertains
“The Shakedown” is a comedy movie directed by Ari Kruger starring Carl Beujer, Emmanuel Castis, Julia Anastasopoulos and Berenice Barbier.
With little fanfare, “The Shakedown” arrives as an enjoyable screwball comedy centered on a family man whose initial blunder leads to a cascade of increasingly larger and more ludicrous mistakes.
This film does not pretend to revolutionize cinema or its genre. Instead, it aims to entertain and help us unwind through a well-directed narrative filled with good dialogues. While it won’t manage to shock or surprise almost anyone, it does deliver on its promise of amusement.
Plot SummaryAn insurance salesman finds himself in a precarious situation when his mistress blackmails him. In desperation, he turns to his brother for help to scare her off. Amidst the ensuing chaos, a mobster gets involved, leading to a complicated web of lies, beatings, and more deceit, eventually ensnaring his entire family.
About the FilmThe film oscillates gracefully between being a family-friendly flick and a dark comedy filled with murders, mobsters, and other macabre elements. However, it never fully commits to either genre, falling somewhere in between. It lacks the rebelliousness and daring often associated with macabre comedies, making it a hybrid that doesn’t entirely fit into any specific category.
There are some genuinely delightful scenes, particularly those featuring Berenice Barbier, the film’s most charming and humorous actress. However, don’t expect her to dominate the screen, as her appearances are limited.
“With little fanfare” is a comedy that entertains with its well-crafted characters and amusing scenarios. However, if you are searching for something sophisticated or daring, you might be left wanting. It is more of a conventional comedy, a product designed to expand Prime Video’s catalog, which admittedly does not produce as much original content compared to other streaming platforms.
The film debuts with little fanfare, featuring only a single English version, and arrives almost as a surprise without any significant advertising. Despite its light and common nature, it manages to entertain with some funny characters and a script that, while not helmed by someone like Guy Ritchie, does contain a bit of his mocking spirit and intricate, humorous plotting.
Our OpinionThe film does not aim for anything beyond entertainment, and in that regard, it succeeds. It provides a light-hearted comedy that, with its occasional daring moments, manages to amuse and entertain in various scenes, achieving exactly what it sets out to do.

“One Fast Move” Movie on Prime Video: A timeless tale of a father, his son, and their shared passion for speed
“One Fast Move” is an action movie written and directed by Kelly Blatz starring K.J. Apa. With Eric Dane, Maia Reficco and Edward James Olmos.
Arriving quietly on Prime Video, “One Fast Move” brings with it a nostalgic flavor reminiscent of classic storytelling: a heartfelt narrative of a father-son bond forged through their mutual love for motorcycles.
Set in the vibrant backdrop of the eighties, this film perfectly encapsulates the era with scenes of characters smoking and jotting down phone numbers on paper napkins—a true throwback to simpler times.
PlotUpon his release from prison, a military veteran returns to his roots to reconnect with his estranged father, a seasoned motorcycle racing veteran. Together, they rekindle their dream of competing in the professional motorcycle racing circuit.
About the film“One Fast Move” exudes the essence of retro cinema, harking back to the multitude of films produced in the eighties that filled the shelves of video rental stores. Prime Video revives this classic-style action film, offering a dose of nostalgia with its timeless father-son story set against the thrilling backdrop of motorcycle racing.
While “One Fast Move” may not introduce anything groundbreaking or modern, it serves as a treasure trove for those yearning for a cinematic experience seemingly lost to time. It ticks all the boxes of an action-packed, speed-driven film: the estranged father, the alluring love interest, the inescapable past, and, most importantly, the high-stakes competition he is determined to conquer.
Training, personal growth, and a touch of romance. “One Fast Move” leans more towards family-friendly cinema than subversive storytelling. It is a narrative filled with fundamentally good characters striving for redemption, progress, and the construction of a brighter future.
The film does not rely on grandiose, spectacular scenes but rather draws its strength from well-crafted characters and a steady, almost contemplative pace.
Our opinionPrime Video once again offers us a slice of retro cinema, blending a hint of rebellious spirit with a strong dose of family values. This film, though not extraordinary, knows precisely what emotional chords to strike to satisfy the most nostalgic viewers.
While there is nothing groundbreaking in its theme, production, or narrative, “One Fast Move” is a testament to the enduring appeal of classic storytelling, making it a delightful watch for those seeking a trip down memory lane.

Season 4 (Finale) of “The Umbrella Academy”: The Epic Conclusion to the Hargreeves Saga
“The Umbrella Academy” is a Netflix fantasy series created by Steve Blackman. It stars Elliot Page, Tom Hoopper and David Cataneda.
“The Umbrella Academy” has undoubtedly been one of Netflix’s most triumphant and pioneering series, breaking new ground both aesthetically and conceptually. This show masterfully blends the retro with the futuristic, juxtaposing avant-garde visuals with classic sensibilities, while balancing commercial appeal with the audacity of an unconventional narrative.
It’s one of those series that seamlessly integrated into our lives, delivering a thrilling cocktail of action, plot twists, humor, and breathtaking scenes. It has garnered a dedicated fanbase, growing its “geeky” charm and leaving many (an overwhelming number, in fact) disheartened by its conclusion.
In the realm of its fictional universe, the series also concludes on August 8, 2024, the very day it premieres globally on Netflix.
PlotThe tale follows a family of superheroes who, upon discovering their father’s demise, become entangled in a complex web of space-time anomalies that threaten to unravel the very fabric of the Universe.
The Time Has Come to Bid Farewell“The Umbrella Academy” may not have been groundbreaking in its narrative originality or in offering a completely new perspective, yet it captivated audiences with its compelling fusion of the futuristic and the retro. Over the span of four years, the storyline has evolved, twisting and turning in intricate ways that made it wonderfully labyrinthine. Yet, “The Umbrella Academy” managed to retain its intrinsic charm throughout its journey.
This fourth season does not lose its magic touch; in each of its six concluding episodes, the end of the road becomes increasingly apparent. The show maintains its humor and spectacular visuals, delivering memorable moments and sustaining its quality, knowing this is the final bow.
Yes, it all culminates today, on August 8, 2024, in a finale that, while premeditated and announced, is likely to leave fans with a bittersweet feeling and a sense of melancholy.
Indeed, it’s a farewell and a conclusion we must acknowledge, grateful to the network for bringing this iconic series to a fitting end. This closure, however sorrowful, also paves the way for new horizons and upcoming series from the network.
A somber ending, we must admit, but an ending nonetheless, and one that marks the end of an era.
