History Heroes award winning new card game: INVENTORS

HISTORY HEROES NEW CARD GAME: INVENTORS
Inventors who changed the world.
Get blown away by the latest History Heroes game
Which inventor, most commonly linked with a peace prize, was the brains behind dynamite?
The answer: Alfred Nobel. It’s just one of hundreds of facts in the latest edition of the award winning History Heroes card games.
History Heroes’ has just launched its new card game: INVENTORS and includes forty beautifully illustrated cards, each with fun and fascinating facts about an inventor who has made an impact on all of our lives.
Did you know that Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, only received his well-known middle name as an 11th birthday gift from his father?
The History Heroes game gets players guessing who the inventor is with a series of facts designed to test the knowledge of anyone aged eight years to 80+! If a player correctly works out who it is from the colour coded statements, each targeted at different ability levels, they win the card. The aim of the game? To end up with more of the cards than anyone else…and learn a little along the way!
Whilst most might know that Florence Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing, how many realise that she is also credited as the inventor of the mathematical pie chart?
The History Heroes ‘INVENTORS’ edition is the latest in a series of History Heroes games that entertain and educate through play. The games won Junior Magazine’s Best Toy Design Award when the first four games were launched in AW2014. All the cards are meticulously researched by a team of experts, beautifully illustrated with colourful drawings and then printed and packaged in the UK.
Alex Ehrmann, whose father Ralph helped take Airfix models to great heights when he joined that company in the 1950s, is doing the same with History Heroes. With an already loyal following, including Bear Grylls. Kate Winslet and Jeremy Paxman, Alex has also been introducing the card games as teaching aids in schools. As well as INVENTORS there are 5 other History Heroes games that focus on SPORT, WORLD WAR ONE, CHILDREN, SCIENTISTS and EXPLORERS.
Speaking before the launch of History Heroes ‘INVENTORS’, Alex Ehrmann said, “History Heroes was conceived as a game that the whole family can play together, regardless of age or ability. Having spent six months putting the INVENTORS edition together, I really believe this is our most accessible game yet. INVENTORS is a perfect gift, packed full of a fantastic range of historical figures who changed the world with inventions we all see and use every day.”
The pocket-sized History Heroes card packs are the perfect size for family travels too. They can be bought online at History Heroes’ website and on Amazon and at select high street retailers. History Heroes would be delighted to provide review/sample copies of any of the games.

San Francisco Exhibitions. Altman Siegel. In search of Vedaland: September 8 – October 1
Matt Keegan, Alphabet Soup (Blocked #6), 2016, Monoprint, 66 x 44 in; 167.6 x 111.8 cm
In search of Vedaland. Liam Everett, Matt Keegan and Will Rogan. September 8 – October 1, 2016
Altman Siegel is pleased to present In search of Vedaland, a three-person exhibition featuring work by Liam Everett, Matt Keegan and Will Rogan. In search of Vedaland borrows its title from magician Doug Henning’s proposed transcendental meditation theme park. The park, which was never realized, was intended as a destination to expand and awaken human consciousness. Henning’s desire to offer new modalities of life is reflected in the artists’ work presented here where objects unfold new ideas through numerous iterations and repeated processes. Reordering and displacing existing cultural fragments, the three artists work in series so as to allow for given concepts to be fully unpacked and aesthetically illustrated. In search of Vedaland exhibits a selection of pieces from distinct bodies of work by each artist; Rogan’s found and altered magazine pages, new small-scale paintings by Everett and a selection of Keegan’s Alphabet Soup monoprints. Exhibited together, so as to emphasize their serial nature, the works offer insight not only into the artists’ unique approaches, but the potential of artworks to be concurrently autonomous and fractions of a greater idea.
Will Rogan exhibits a selection of transformed magazine pages from his ongoing series Silencer (MUM) and Vedaland Plans. Rogan sources pages from his collection of Magic Unity Might, a magician trade magazine published from the 1950s through the late 1970s. Meticulously masking the magazine pages to protect elements within the composition, Rogan uses an eraser to disappear the magicians within the frame. Rogan’s repetitive action, resulting in an array of altered editorials, offers a contemplative approach to disrupting and reordering established imagery. Rogan cites Henning’s Vedaland as a starting point to this body of work, drawing parallels between the meditative process of erasure and lost ideologies from the parks inability to materialize.
Liam Everett’s vibrant abstractions envelop viewers through their rigorous surfaces, complex layering and confounding structure. The majority of Everett’s paintings are listed as Untitled, but he parenthetically references geographical locations, questioning the relationship of the work to both its spatial and temporal context. This aspect of Everett’s practice points to his philosophical and performative concerns in which he is constantly investigating the nature of practice. By calling to mind places and communities that in some instances no longer exist, Everett furthers his desire to build paintings that evade any present, singular reference. For Everett, the negation of material is just as important as its addition–a subtractive and repetitive process shared by Rogan and Keegan.
Matt Keegan’s Alphabet Soup series is comprised of monoprints the artist creates by pouring the popular soup over a scanner bed. Creating a digital image that is machined (CNC) into plywood, Keegan then rolls the panel with lithography inks to create the unique artworks. Intersecting the common soup with technology and chance, the artist playfully transforms the food letters, through scale shifts and layering. The series exemplifies Keegan’s iterative process of duplicating actions to varying end results, here drawing on everyday technology to abstract and confuse our accepted order of language. Alphabet Soup unfolds our relationship to letters and words, offering sites to contemplate new ways of considering these structures of communication.
Will Rogan (b. 1975) lives and works in Sausalito, California. Solo exhibitions include the Berkeley Art Museum; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp and Misako and Rosen, Tokyo. Group exhibitions include the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco; the Shanghai Biennial; the Oakland Art Museum and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco.
Liam Everett (b.1973) lives and works in Sebastopol, California. He is currently included in the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens’ Biennale of Painting in Deurle, Belgium on view through September 25. Recent solo exhibitions include Office Baroque, Brussels; Eleni Koroneou Gallery, Athens; On Stellar Rays, New York; Paul Kasmin, New York and White Columns, New York. Everett’s editioned artist’s book Inutile was recently published by RITE Editions and is now part of the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Inutile is available for sale at the gallery.
Matt Keegan (b.1976) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Recent exhibitions include Grazer Kunstverein, Graz, Austria (with Kay Rosen) traveling to the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston (opens October 7th); the Contemporary Art & Design Biennial, Piacenza, Italy (closes October 9th); “Reconstructions: Recent Photographs and Video from the Met Collection,” The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and “Storylines: Contemporary Art at the Guggenheim,” The Guggenheim, New York. A new monograph, OR, was recently published by Inventory Press in conjunction with Keegan’s 2015 solo show at Rogaland Kunstcenter, Stavanger, Norway, and is available for sale at the gallery.
In Search of Vedaland is Altman Siegel’s last exhibition at 49 Geary Street before the gallery moves to its new location at 1150 25th Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, which opens November 4, 2016.

Tracking Excellence Award For University OF The Arts London

Mailroom Tracking Excellence Award
University of the Arts London delivers 20,000 items without loss
London, 09:00, September 2, 2016 – University of the Arts London has been awarded a Tracking Excellence award by Channel and Mobile Solutions. The award was presented to Emlyn Foody (Facilities Manager) who headed up the mailroom team who managed to deliver over 20,000 parcels to staff and students in its flagship site Granary Building without a single item being unaccounted for.
Mike Bowen (Director) – “We provide Mailroom Tracking Systems to many clients which are great tools to help ensure all items are accounted for and delivered on time. However, it is always the combination of a well-run team of people and a good system that achieves the best results. Delivering 20,000 items without a single loss, is a fantastic achievement and I delighted to present our Tracking Excellence award to Emlyn and his team.”
Emlyn Foody (Facilities Manager) – “We introduced DeliveryPoD Mailroom a few years ago to ensure we had a full audit trail from receipt from a courier through to final delivery to people at desks. As time has gone on we have used more and more of its features to refine our service to achieve our ultimate goal of not a single item being unaccounted for, throughout the whole of last year and we delivered over 20,000 items without any items being lost.”
The end result is that staff and students get an excellent service, whilst the facilities department saves a substantial amount of money as it does not have to reimburse people for lost items.
Emlyn Foody added – “We are currently implementing the latest version of DeliveryPoD which allows us to grant staff and students the ability to log on and see what has arrived for them and where it currently is. This will further improve the service we offer to staff and students, whilst at the same time it will improve our department’s efficiency.”
DeliveryPoD is an Internal Tracking System that allows organisations to track items from point of receipt in a building (or multiple sites) through to delivery to people at their desks or barcoded locations. It is in use at many Public Sector and Private Sector organisations in the UK.

Hobbit house designer

Hobbit House Design, Lili Giacobino
“In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.”
Kingston designer, Lili Giacobino, brings fantasy interior to life.
She states, “The Hobbit house uses recycled floorboards and reclaimed portholes found second hand, which came from a ship that had travelled the world. These additions create a lovely sense of adventure and narrative for the project, much like the novel it was inspired from.”
After 3 years as a property developer herself, Giacobino awakens the nostalgic imagination within us through her interior design. Despite her creative and fantastical designs, she utilises her knowledge in plumbing, carpentry, tiling and her expertise in furniture.
She self admits to her interest in “upcycling and recycling materials found around [her]”, as she sees the “new life for the material and a whole new story it can tell; it triggers the imagination.” As well as her Hobbit house design, this feature is also found in her most recent property development where by tilting a specific book on the shelf it opens up to a hidden room, as if plucked from its own fantasy novel.
However, like most vast, mystical spaces, Giacobino believes that, “it is not about how much space you have but how you manipulate it and how you wish to feel within it.” It is her priority to develop the space, regardless of size, to become the ideal atmosphere for your aspirations.
She now wishes to share her sense of adventure with you and incorporate her creative flair into a dream space, personally tailored for you. Looking past the current design trends, this interior designer aims to transform your home or even just an unloved room to suit your interests and appeal to the unique individuality of each person. “A virtual makeover of the room is a perfect way to begin the process, and also to visualise the changes to the space. It’s amazing to see how one space you see all the time can be transformed before your eyes, while you sit relaxing with a cup of tea!”
About Lili Giacobino
Originally from Switzerland, Giacobino worked as a social worker helping children with special needs when she began to help make the childrens’ ideas a reality through decorations and additions to their surroundings. She started her own furniture company in 2005, focusing on the use of recycled cardboard. She moved to the UK in 2008 to study Product and Furniture Design at Kingston University, graduating with a First Class Honours.
BLOC’s Multi-Million Pound Hotel Praised as “Catalyst” for Redevelopment of Birmingham

BLOC Hotels Grand Central
Council officials have unanimously approved plans for the 25-storey BLOC Grand Central, designed by award-winning architects Glenn Howells and entirely funded by private investors.
Its construction will help realise Birmingham City Council’s vision of making the Southside district a vibrant and attractive destination for visitors.
Cllr Tahir Ali, the Cabinet Member for Development, Transport and the Economy, said: “The whole area cries out for redevelopment and I think this will act as a catalyst.”
The council member responsible for making Birmingham the enterprise capital of Britain, by growing businesses, creating jobs and improving wages gave his full support for the plans.
While Cllr Dr Barry Henley praised the building as a “tall, elegantly, beautiful designed building”, concluding: “It will be a welcome addition to the city.”
The building is just 50 paces from the iconic Spanish Steps entrance to New Street Station, John Lewis and the Grand Central shopping precinct. BLOC’s flagship 238-room hotel will be built on a site currently occupied by a largely vacant 1960s office block. It will create 40 full-time jobs in the area and support scores more ancillary workers.
The Southside development at 32-34 Hill Street is part of an ongoing multi-million pound investment by the hotel chain in Birmingham city centre.
BLOC’s critically-acclaimed designer hotels in Gatwick Airport and Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter have already proved a hit with business and leisure travellers.
BLOC are also set to launch their innovative ‘apart-rooms’ for longer stays. Apartment BLOC launches soon at their hotel in the Jewellery Quarter.
Rob Morgan, Managing Director of BLOC Hotels, said: “We’re really excited that planning permission for the new BLOC Grand Central has been approved.
“This is a defining movement in the company’s ambitious growth strategy. Our first hotel was in Birmingham and we want to continue to invest in the city that the brand was born in.”
Glenn Howells, of Glenn Howells Architects, said: “We are delighted to be working with fellow Birmingham-based company BLOC Hotels on a bespoke building for the heart of the city.
“The building is situated at an important gateway site within Birmingham City Centre and offers the opportunity to define a benchmark for the future regeneration of this part of the city.”
The Council’s Planning Committee Report praised the development: “The scheme is of the highest quality in terms of architectural form, detail and material. In particular, the facade and top of the building are well considered.
“Moreover, the double height entrance lobby and cafe restaurant would enliven the base of the building and be an attractive destination.”

Clothing brand Bergans of Norway embarks on ambitious sustainability programme

Sam Branson – Virgin STRIVE Challenge
Extreme outdoor clothing and ski brand, Bergans of Norway, announces its ambitious four-year sustainability programme, which will see the company embark on a huge commitment to reduce the industry’s dependency on fossil fuels.
Bergans of Norway’s Expedition 2020 programme will see the company set out to achieve a number of sustainability goals including:
• 75% of Bergans of Norway products to be bluesign® approved
• 70% of Bergans of Norway products to be made from more sustainable raw materials which will have a verified environmental footprint for products and operations
• Less than 2 percent of all shipments will be via airfreight
• All packaging will be composed of sustainable sources
• Annual sustainable training will be required for Bergans of Norway
• All buildings will be powered by renewable energy
Bergans of Norway’s sustainability manager, Felix Ockborn said: “At Bergans, we are passionate about providing people with great outdoor experiences. It goes without saying that we do whatever we can to ensure that future generations can enjoy nature to the same extent as we do today.”
“Bergans’ priority is to promote clean and ethical production and one of our milestones for 2016 is to ensure all our products which are manufactured using Down are done so in accordance with the Textile Exchange’s Responsible Down Standard. This means that a third party will verify that down production, throughout the entire production chain, adheres to specific ethical standards,” said Ockborn.
Expedition 2020 will see the brand embark on other goals to include less than 2 percent of all shipments will be via airfreight, all packaging will be composed of sustainable sources, annual sustainable training will be required for Bergans of Norway staff and all buildings will be powered by renewable energy.
Instead of shipping via airfreight, Ockborn adds how Bergans of Norway will use alternative transportation. He believes that with the right planning, new train routes between Asia and the Norwegian and German distribution centres can leave less environmental impact. Ockborn also said that transportation is an area of focus within Expedition 2020 that can be influenced immediately.
As for renewable energy, the buildings in Norway will be powered by hydropower, which is Norway’s number one energy supply, whilst the buildings in Germany aim to be powered through a combination of solar, wind and hydropower.
“At Bergans, we have never been afraid to embark on tough expeditions. By being innovative, adaptive and focused, we will reach these goals,” said Ockborn.
Bergans of Norway recently marked a milestone in the outdoor clothing industry with the development of their first plant based, technical weatherproof jacket – the ‘Eidfjord’ – made using ecodear® fabric (a 30 percent plant-based environmentally friendly polyester face fabric) – in the development of resource-saving plastics and utilisation of renewable resources instead of fossil oil in clothing manufacture.
The lightweight and technical Eidfjord jacket (£280) is made with 3-layers of waterproof and breathable properties, using ecodear® fabric on the outer layer. Developed in collaboration with the Japanese manufacturer Toray®, the ecodear® fabric retains its highly technical performance due to the chemical structure of the ecodear® polyester being identical to conventionally produced polyester.
This announcement coincides with Bergans of Norway’s new partnership with The Virgin STRIVE Challenge 2016, where they will support Holly Branson, Sam Branson and Innocent drinks co-founder Richard Reed, amongst a core team of 25, to tackle a tough 30 day expedition from the base of the Matterhorn in Switzerland to the summit of Mount Etna in Sicily in aid of the Big Change charity.
The ultra-endurance challenge, which begins on 2nd September 2016, will see up to 250 participants join the core team at various stages of the journey, as they hike, cycle, swim and run over 2,300 km to raise funds for the Big Change charity, established by Holly and Sam Branson to catalyse positive change for young people.
Bergans of Norway UK country manager, Andy Nicolson said: “As a company, we genuinely believe in the power of the outdoors to inspire and educate, so we are very proud and privileged to have been involved with supporting Big Change since its inception in 2012. The Virgin Strive Challenge 2016 has a strong synergy with Bergans’ core values and to be associated with such a credible cause that combines a challenging expedition with raising funds to help young people in the UK is fantastic”
Co-founder and director of The Virgin STRIVE Challenge, Noah Devereux said: “Big Change is incredibly proud of the longstanding relationship we have with Bergans of Norway. Bergans is an important part of Big Change’s history, from supplying gear used to climb Mont Blanc in 2012 to launch the charity, through to supplying the Virgin STRIVE Challenges in 2014, 15 and 16! We chose Bergans because of the quality of gear, their environmental commitments and all the work they do with supplying vital survival gear to those affected by natural disasters”
Bergans of Norway has been a leader in outdoor gear since Sir Edmund Hillary pioneered Everest with a Bergans carrying frame to transport oxygen, and the company continues to be as innovative today. Expedition 2020 sets an example not only for the outdoor industry, but for companies around the globe.
Maxoptra improves transport routing precision with Speed Zones

Maxoptra enables custom speed zones
London, 01 September 2016 – A new version of the Maxoptra dynamic scheduling and route optimisation platform has been released, which includes new functionality for applying custom speed zones that users have learned of through experience. Allowing more accurate calculation of complex delivery schedules and arrival time estimates, the new Speed Zone functionality allows users to apply correction factors for different parts of a route, for example, city centres or complex intersections where traffic may be heavier and delays incurred. Additional features also included in the new release comprise new order processing functionality and improved user interfaces.
Maxoptra already automatically includes averaged historic traffic data to calculate routes based on the type of vehicle and the time of day. However, as specific vehicles move at different speeds on different roads and at different times of day, Maxoptra now allows users to customise driving speeds that are applied when preparing a complex delivery schedule or service programme. Speed zones can simply be drawn on the map, taking into account local knowledge or notifications of roadworks, for example. This use of speed correction factors will improve the overall accuracy of planning delivery and service schedules, boost customer service with more accurate ETA calculations and potentially allow for cost savings with dispatchers avoiding areas of known congestion and delays.
“This development is one of a series which enables users to very easily augment the significant benefits delivered by Maxoptra’s optimisation intelligence with the specific local knowledge that they have built up over many years of valuable experience at the coal face. This approach ensures that our customers get the best of both worlds by benefitting from synergies of technology and experience, instead of pitting the two against each other,” commented Stuart Brunger, Head of Business Development at Maxoptra.
Automatically available for all users of the cloud-based solution when they next log in, other functionality incorporated within the latest version of Maxoptra includes the ability to programme customisable order cancellation reasons, better management of multiple and non-completed schedules, improved reporting and customer communications and enhancements to the user interface.
“As Maxoptra is a cloud-based solution, all existing users of the platform will automatically benefit from the new features,” continued Brunger. “In other words, all this additional functionality is free and immediately available. There is no need to wait for a support engineer to visit to perform an upgrade, no need to get internal IT to validate work done, and no need to find additional budget.”
Honest fashion, happy fish – the fair-trade streetwear brand making serious waves

The ethical streetwear brand playing the long game. #vivaelfish
Giant squids and whales rule the oceans of streetwear.Catching A Fish In Norway (CAFIN) is an award-winning, ethical alternative. We pride ourselves on swimming against the current and being intimate enough to care.
This means treating workers like human beings, championing our designers and doing what we can to help marginalised communities: sacrificing short-term profits to act with a conscience.
Cheap mass produced t-shirts have hidden costs: poorly treated workers, exploited designers and a significant environmental impact.
In 2014, Law students Paul Donati and Lottie Michael begun Catching A Fish In Norway, a social enterprise which works with farmers and manufacturers in rural India to improve organic farming, as well as working conditions throughout the fashion industry – implementing change through education and organisation.
“One shirt at a time, starting small, we are seeing that fashion design doesn’t just influence our style, but the way we think about how our clothes are made”
CAFIN rejects the shortcuts taken by mega-brands, preferring a not-so-easy but very-happy production process, raising awareness of the issues along the way.
Brits Shun Pubs & Partners That Aren’t Dog Friendly

Dog Buddy searches for Dog Friendly Pubs
– 98% of Brits say partner must get along with their dog
– Just under ¾ of UK dog lovers search for dog friendly pubs
– A third of dog loving Brits struggle to find a dog friendly pub at all
– Paul O’Grady, pips Kate Middleton to top spot as nation’s favourite dog-owning celebrity
LONDON, 1 September 2016 – As a nation of dog lovers, our four-legged friends matter so much to us that a whopping 98% of Britons say it’s important that their partners get along with their dogs. Not only that, but 40% would bring their dogs along on a date or night out with friends and 70% of Britons actively search for dog-friendly pubs.
Research from DogBuddy.com, Europe’s leading online dog sitting platform, highlights that over two thirds of UK dog owners are put off a pub if it isn’t dog-friendly and nearly a quarter have taken their pooch elsewhere if a pub claimed to be dog-friendly but wasn’t.
Paul O’Grady tops the bill as the nation’s favourite dog-owning celebrity with just under a third of the votes, while Kate Middleton came fifth with 5% of the vote.
Top 5 Dog-Loving Celebrities
1) Paul O’Grady (29%)
2) Tom Hardy (9%)
3)= Graham Norton (7%)
3)= Martin Clunes (7%)
5) Kate Middleton (5%)
Paul O’Grady comments on coming top; “I’m very flattered to be voted ‘Most Popular Dog Owner’, although my dogs have got the hump as they reckon without their assistance I wouldn’t have stood a chance.
“I’m all for dogs being allowed in pubs, it’s ridiculous that some pubs have a ban on them. I used to take my dog Buster to the pub all the time as he was handy for getting me home at closing time!”
The results from the survey of more than 2,500 dog owners across the UK also revealed how dog-oriented the UK really is when it comes to choosing a drinking den, with a third of dog owning Britons struggling to find a dog-friendly pub.
DogBuddy.com is launching the Dog-friendly Pub Awards in a bid to meet the demands of our dog-crazed nation and find the UK’s best canine-caring drinking establishments.
DogBuddy is encouraging pubs across the country to embrace ‘paw power’ and welcome four legs as well as two. Not only will these ‘pawsome’ awards show some well-deserved appreciation of existing dog-friendly establishments, but also aim to promote dog-friendly values across all pubs nationwide, inspiring dog owners in the UK to discover and visit their local pubs.
‘We’re delighted to be announcing the launch of our Dog-friendly Pub Awards, to celebrate the pubs that recognise that our dogs enjoy getting out to their local pub just as much as we do. We value dog welfare and care above all, and these awards will help us to further promote happy lifestyles for both pets and their owners.” says Richard Setterwall, CEO and Founder of DogBuddy.
If your dog-friendly pub isn’t listed, nominations are open for pubs all over the UK at dogbuddypubs.com/add-a-pub. Closing date for nominating and voting is 31st October.
