FIVE to Headline Glasgow Charity Event

On Friday 16 September popular 1990s boy band Five will be the headline act at the Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation Black & Red Ball in Glasgow. The Glasgow Radisson Blu Hotel (http://bit.ly/288MNrD) will play host to the milestone event on which will see the charity reach its £500,000 donation mark.


The boy band rose to fame in 1997 with their debut single“Slam Dunk (Da Funk)” which claimed the number 10 spot in the UK singles chart before becoming the NBA’s theme tune. They later went on to release tracks such as “If Ya Getting Down”, “Everybody Get Up” and “Keep On Movin’” which have become some of the most recognisable tunes from the era.


The group have sold 1.6 million albums, 2 million singles in the UK and 20 million singles worldwide. They have also received 18 awards including Best Pop Act (BRIT Awards, 2000), MTV Select Award (MTV Europe Music, 1998), Best Newcomer (Silver Clef, 2000) and Best Music Act on a Reality TV Show (National Reality TV Awards, 2013).


In 2001 the boy band went their separate ways but have since regrouped to perform multiple tours in the UK and Australia. In 2014 Five supported McBusted for four shows on their tour. The band, now consisting of original members Ritchie Neville, Scott Robinson and Sean Conlon, continue to tour and perform together. Five regularly appear at charity events to help raise money for good causes and raise awareness.


Speaking ahead of the event Five said, “We are incredibly privileged to be invited to perform at the Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation annual ball, especially at an important celebratory milestone.


“Lauren’s parents have been spectacular in creating this wonderful event to raise awareness of vasculitis and we are excited to be part of the great work they have achieved.”


The Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation was created by Grant and Adrienne Currie following the death of their 15-year old daughter and only child Lauren in 2010. Lauren had suffered from Wegener’s granulomatosis, a variant of the auto-immune disease vasculitis.


Lauren’s condition was only diagnosed in the final hours of her life and her parents realised that, with earlier diagnosis, her life could have been saved.


Lauren’s father Grant Currie said, “This is a very special year for us as this September would have been Lauren’s twenty-first birthday. Lauren adored popular music and we are extremely thankful to have such an acclaimed and popular band perform at our Black & Red Vasculitis ball. We want to raise the profile of vasculitis on an international level within the medical community and the general public. By encouraging earlier diagnosis, it will reduce cases of severe organ damage and save lives.”


Vasculitis is the inflammation of blood vessels. When blood vessels are inflamed they reduce blood flow to tissues and organs. Any blood vessel can become inflamed and can affect any part of the body. Due to this there are numerous types of vasculitis each with different symptoms. The cause of vasculitis is usually unknown but it can sometimes develop from a previous infection. It is an uncommon illness and can affect people of all ages.


Early diagnosis is important in effective medical care for vasculitis. The Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation has awarded £62,000 of funding to the University of Aberdeen to support a PHD project on vasculitis.


The Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation is one of only two vasculitis-specific charities operating in the UK. It is happy to collaborate with other relevant charities that support the fight against vasculitis, including those in the US.


X Factor’s 2010 runner up Nicholas McDonald and Glasgow Academy Musical and Theatre Arts (GAMTA)will also be performing. The Black & Red Ball will include a spectacular auction with lots including a three-day luxury superyacht charter, a guitar signed by Texas, a boot signed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and a Coca-Cola mountain bike.


Tickets for the ball are priced at £65 for a single ticket, £650 for a table of ten and £780 for a table of twelve. Included with the ticket or table booking is a drinks reception, three course meal, wine, entertainment and entry into a raffle.


The Black & Red Ball has been held annually in Glasgow since 2011 and has helped to contribute to the overall fundraising of £500,000 for the charity. Modern-day black women are usually portrayed as strong, confident and “flawless.” But Issa and Molly are definitely not “killing it.” These best friends must deal with their own real-life flaws as they attempt to navigate different worlds and cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences.


Created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, the comedy series INSECURE launches its eight-episode season SUNDAY, OCT. 9 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO. Rae stars as Issa and Yvonne Orji stars as Molly on the show, which explores the black female experience in an unclichéd and authentic way.


Over the course of the season, Issa attempts to figure out what she wants out of life and how to take control of it, while fumbling her way through this journey. Molly, a corporate attorney who appears to have everything together professionally, struggles inside as she looks for external ways to fix her life.


Meanwhile, Issa’s boyfriend, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), who has fallen victim to complacency, works to get his own act together. Frieda (Lisa Joyce), Issa’s overeager white co-worker, whose enthusiasm is both annoying and endearing, is at the crux of Issa’s racial frustrations at work.


Shot in and around South Los Angeles, INSECURE incorporates the music of both indie and established artists of color, and touches on a variety of social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.

The evening will also see a very special performance from Nicole Scherzinger singing a unique song with the Rays of Sunshine Children’s Choir, a group of brave and inspiring seriously ill children. The event will be hosted by Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity www.raysofsunshine.org.uk which grants wishes to seriously ill children across the UK.

In the Home of Cricket’s most iconic venues – the Captains’ Lounge and Marylebone Suite – hospitality packages which included a hearty breakfast, sumptuous four-course lunch and luxury afternoon tea, sold out quickly for the first three days of the England v Sri Lanka and England v Pakistan Investec Test Matches.


Private Boxes with the best views of the action for up to 18 guests also sold out fast for the same days.


MCC revealed a sharp increase in revenue for its 2016 Sri Lanka Test Match hospitality packages compared with 2014 when the team last played England at Lord’s.


Revenues for hospitality were up by nearly 30% over the same period in 2014 whilst private box sale revenues were up by a healthy 60%.


Nick Kenton, MCC Head of Sales, Meetings & Events and Hospitality, said: “2016 has been a fantastic year for enjoying a day of cricket whilst experiencing the very best food, drink and hospitality that Lord’s has to offer.


“This year’s sales figures show that hospitality packages at Lord’s were in huge demand and continue to be a key part of the summer sporting calendar.”


Lord’s also expects high demand for its new hospitality packages, to be released this autumn for 2017 matches. These include England v South Africa from 6th to 10th July and England v West Indies from 7th to 11th September. Packages for the England v Ireland Royal London One-Day International on 7th May 2017 are also expected to sell out in record time.

Red Evolution To Move Into mi-HUB

Web developers and those in the lead generation business are sometimes accused of not reading the platforms they have created. This is certainly not the case for business owner David Robinson from Red Evolution. Not only did he developShare My Office, but he spotted a new co-working space called mi-HUB in Whitechapel, London set up by Rafael dos Santos.


mi-HUB is located in Batty Street near Aldgate East Underground Station and provides the necessary training to migrants to run a successful company as well as offering an exciting Migrant Business Accelerator programme, giving migrants the best start.


Rafael dos Santos was born in 1981 and is a Brazilian-British multi-award winning entrepreneur who has lived in London since 2002. In 2015 Rafael decided to support migrant entrepreneurs in their quest to start and grow their businesses.


Founder of mi-HUB, entrepreneur Rafael dos Santos said: “I am absolutely delighted! It makes me smile that our first new tenant who has responded to our marketing drive lives in Scotland.”


David Robinson, who lives in Aboyne, North East Scotland, is looking to expand his business. He chose mi-HUB because he is a fairly new entrant into the London market and believes it would be good to enjoy the journey with like-minded people.


Red Evolution has a flexible package with the new business hub of which different team members will be able to use the facilities. Their ideal clients are businesses who are confused about the web and believe that they could do more with it.


Lead generation expert, David Robinson explains, “We’re pretty diverse for a small business. The revenue comes from helping other businesses generate leads from their website. However, we also develop our own projects.”


The web developers at Red Evolution created sites such as Share My Office, the platform on which Red Evolution and mi-HUB were introduced, and Alertise, a strategic planning Software as a Service (SaaS) product.


The business works with a large IT support company and a car finance business in London. Red Evolution currently services a wide range of clients including an exhibition stand specialist, an environmental charity and a professional broadcasting organisation.


David Robinson’s advice to small business owners is to outsource non-core activities for example, having a good accountant. He describes this as, “Things that will consume your time and especially things you’re not likely to be good at”.

Vintage design reimagined
