New Report Says Britain Should Support Entrepreneurial Migrants

Migrant Entrepreneurship Report Launch
The Government must back job-creating migrant entrepreneurs to help make a success of Brexit, a new reportlaunched in Parliament suggests.
The study, conducted by the Institute of Directors and mi-HUB, found that there were particular challenges for entrepreneurs from overseas, including their qualifications not being recognised, not being able to transfer their credit history to the UK, difficulty in accessing finance and lack of support networks.
The authors claim that addressing these issues would help migrant-led businesses to create even more jobs and boost the UK economy.
The report, Migrant Entrepreneurship in the UK: The benefits to Britain, built on interviews and surveys undertaken by mi-HUB and the IoD, was launched at an event hosted by Neil Coyle MP.
The report was authored by Rafael dos Santos, a Brazilian-born entrepreneur who has created London’s first co-working space specifically for migrant entrepreneurs, and Andy Silvester, Head of Campaigns at the IoD.
The research found that:
• The majority of those interviewed – foreign entrepreneurs now leading companies – either employ native born workers or are planning to do so in the near future.
• The majority came to study or to work in established firms. The report argues that any post-Brexit policies designed to restrict or complicate visas would have a damaging long-term effect on the UK economy.
• Despite the success of many migrant entrepreneurs, presented in a series of case studies in the report, there remain significant challenges around networks, contacts, and knowledge of Government support, with many migrants to the UK unaware of official schemes and advice often used by native-born entrepreneurs.
80 migrant entrepreneurs were asked specifically about the issues they faced:
• 44% believe that a lack of contacts and networks holds them back.
• 38% suggest there is a lack of knowledge of Government and non-Government schemes designed to help start-up businesses, and 33% believe accessing finance is more difficult.
• In particular, difficulties transferring credit histories from abroad, particularly outside the European Union, often means entrepreneurs struggle to access finance or obtain credit cards to fund early stage business.
• While more than half of the IoD 99, a group of business founders predominantly born in the UK, have used government grants or loans in the past five years, less than one in ten migrant entrepreneurs have benefitted from those schemes.
In advance of the report, Rafael dos Santos, co-author of the report and founder of the migrant-friendly co-working space mi-HUB, said, “This report demonstrates clearly the value of migrant entrepreneurship to the UK economy. Anybody who spends time in the start-up ecosystem immediately realises that allowing the brightest and best to build their businesses in Britain has been a huge benefit to the UK. There is much that Government can do, from working with community groups to simplifying the visa process, to ensure that migrant entrepreneurs continue to thrive.”
Simon Walker, Director General of the IoD, said “For all the talk of migrants ‘taking our jobs,’ it’s more likely that they will be creating them. As we move towards our departure from the European Union and rewrite our immigration policy, ensuring that we are still open to those who want to grow their businesses in the UK will be absolutely crucial.”
Lord Young of Graffham, former Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and author of the Coalition Government’s report into start-up enterprise, writes in the report’s foreword, “The vast majority of those who arrive on our shores come here looking for the opportunity to better themselves, to enable their family to enjoy a decent life and many can do that best by setting up their own business. I commend this report for demonstrating how much we should welcome those immigrants, how much we should assist them in their endeavours to work for themselves and, ultimately, how much their efforts will benefit the whole economy.”

“Technology know-how will drive market growth of smart home automation” according to Quest End Ltd

Quest End’s Cinema-at-Home suite
Fundamental to the success and take-up of property automation technologies, which control everything from heating and lighting to communications, security and entertainment, will be largely driven by the ability to integrate the control into one seamless solution.
This is the message to property architects, developers, land agents, mechanical engineering consultants and interior designers wanting to offer automation from Quest End Limited; a property development company that has launched a brand new property automation service.
Analyst firm Gartner predicts that the number of smart connected homes will grow to 700 million by 2020, while Ovum expects that by 2020, the majority will have a smart energy meter and smart thermostats, and other devices will be connected to it.
“UK consumers are beginning to really see the benefits that property automation technology brings and, as such, the market is set for sharp upward growth,” explains Quest End managing director, Liam Parker. “There are many different ways in which a property can be automated from CCTV security systems and home cinemas to automated lighting and smart heating and, with more solutions now being Wi-Fi enabled, the opportunities are set to expand even further.”
“Yet for property developers, architects and interior designers and other professionals who are looking to incorporate home automation into their projects the main challenge is understanding what is possible and making it work. Our roots here at Quest End are firmly set in both the technology sector, having previously sold a very successful IT company, and also property development; we are therefore very well placed to provide the necessary technical expertise to support professionals in bringing this into their offering.”
As a family owned and run business, Quest End is headquartered in Maidenhead, Berkshire where its brand new Experience Centre offers visitors the chance to see and try many of the solutions available. Unlike other providers Quest End doesn’t simply supply a product but instead designs bespoke solutions that is seamlessly installed into the chosen space and centrally controlled by a tablet or mobile device.
Partnering with the leading technology companies in the automated home, entertainment and control industry, including Crestron, Savant, Loxone, Artcoustic, Sonos, Jaymar, Robomow and Ad Notam, Quest End is a member of CEDIA. It provides a bespoke broad range of property automation solutions including security, cinema at home, multi-room audio and video, automated shading, control systems, lighting control, smart heating, energy monitoring and robotic lawnmowers.
Concludes Liam Parker: “We invite architects, property developers, land and property agents, mechanical engineering consultants and interior designers to come and meet the team at our Experience Centre in Maidenhead to see examples of automation and control systems in action – we have a fantastic Cinema at Home suite which includes 4D motion chairs, and can also showcase a wide range of lighting, audio and video and security solutions. We are looking to partner with firms across the region that wish to offer automation services to their clients as an added value service and so look forward to demonstrating our expertise.”

EveryWoman Day photo stories tackle the taboo of ‘women’s troubles’
EveryWoman Day is launching this year with a striking photo campaign to raise awareness and funds for poorly understood female health conditions which seriously limit quality of life as well as those which can kill.
It has been created by Purple Orchid, the women’s self-care company, in association with the Cystitis and Overactive Bladder Foundation, a charity which supports people with bladder conditions.
The first EveryWoman Day is Friday September 16 – in the middle of of Sexual Health Week, Interstitial Cystitis Awareness Month and Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month. It’s for Every Woman because of all the ordinary women who are doing everyday things with extraordinary strength all the time despite their pain and suffering. And Every Woman can join in, by adding to the website their story and a photo of their belly with a word painted on it which describes their condition or the part of it that bothers them most.
The need to talk about these unmentionable “women’s troubles” is highlighted by some shocking new statistics.
· A shocking 80% of women said Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome (IC/PBS) had caused intimacy problems with their partners – for 38% of them, that led to severe problems such as separation and divorce.
· Yet more than 40% of women with IC/Painful Bladder Syndrome waited FIVE YEARS or longer to get a diagnosis, according to a new survey by the COB Foundation.
It’s time to talk about these taboo topics. One of the reasons that so many female reproductive health conditions aren’t properly understood is that we don’t discuss them.
Gynae cancers are less talked about than breast cancer because we don’t want to discuss what happens “down below”. It’s all just “women’s troubles” – a tag which is still guaranteed to shut down questions and conversation.
Dr Karen Gardiner, MD of Purple Orchid, said: “We have started the campaign with photos of the names of some of the many conditions painted onto the bellies of women whose ages span five decades. Women’s troubles happen below the waist and above the knee, and we wanted to symbolise the fact that they have been kept under wraps, but they no longer need to be considered ‘below the belt’.
“There has been little drug development for many of these diseases for decades in part because money goes to better known and, some would argue, more important diseases.
“If we don’t talk about these conditions and their effect on our daily lives, that will never change. If the incidence and, more importantly, the impact is better understood, the pharmaceutical industry may consider more research and subsequently, development.
“Since there are no cures for many of these conditions, women have to manage them for their entire lives. So by sharing information and experiences, we can reduce the feelings of isolation, more women can potentially improve their symptoms and reduce their suffering. Lives can be improved by talking about what works and what doesn’t, what makes things worse, how to cope with the debilitating effects and simply how we get through each day of pain, exhaustion, depression and other difficulties.”
EveryWoman Day is about ordinary women performing extraordinary feats every day, just to keep their families, their lives and/or their jobs on track – and who doesn’t know someone like that? Anything from bathing a newborn baby after you’ve had a Caesarian to putting breakfast out for kids before school when you’re in the middle of cancer treatment can be an incredible achievement.
It’s important that the conversation happens across the generations. It’s not always Mum who knows best, sometimes daughters have modern ideas or new information. And a modern girl’s problems can be recognised by an older woman who has lived through a similar experience in a different era. If we can acknowledge and celebrate our own strengths, share stories, inspire each other and make difficult topics easier to discuss, we can all live longer in better health.
A spokeswoman for the Cystitis and OverActive Bladder Foundation said: “In this day and age it is hard to believe that people have been waiting up to five years for a diagnosis of Interstitial Cystitis and Painful Bladder Syndrome. As a sufferer myself for 20 years I can see how things are changing for the better but we need to make it happen faster. The COB Foundation is here to make it happen.”
Dr Gardiner added: “We women can give ourselves a hard time about the things we haven’t done, rather than appreciating the things that we have achieved.
“So get involved, don’t be silent. Paint, scrawl or scribble your relevant word on your belly using lipstick, marker pen, face paint or whatever else works, take a photo and post it on the website and share on social media with your story. EveryWoman needs you.”

From ‘Strawberry Falls’ adventure golf, ‘Scoop JCB diggers’ and ‘Honeycomb Canyon’, a sensational sand and water play area, to ‘Daisy’s Garden’, a free play experience with a difference that includes a snow-emitting, life-size magical ice cream tree sitting at the heart of the mind-blowing site.
Jonathan Fell, Director of The Ice Cream Farm and the man behind the multi million pound redevelopments, comments: “This year we are celebrating 30 years in business, which is something we are immensely proud of. However, to gain international recognition from a body such as Guinness World Records has left us totally speechless and bursting with pride. We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our 30th anniversary.”

Sussex-based Vent-Axia Celebrates 80 Years of Innovation

Vent-Axia Celebrates 80th Anniversary
On Friday 9 September 2016, Vent-Axia, the UK’s leading ventilation company, celebrated its 80th anniversary at its headquarters in Fleming Way, Crawley, West Sussex. To honour the occasion Henry Smith MP for Crawley and The Worshipful, the Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Raj Sharma, took part in a celebration ceremony where Vent-Axia buried a time capsule in its grounds to mark the company’s 80th Anniversary.
Founded by Joe Akester in 1936 when he invented the world’s first electrically-operated window fan, Vent-Axia has been a leading British manufacturer ever since. A company steeped in 80 years of British heritage and innovation, Sir Winston Churchill was one of the company’s first customers with Vent-Axia supplying ventilation for No 10 Downing Street during World War II.
Vent-Axia’s first official premises were in Collinette Road, Putney, London, but in 1961 Vent-Axia relocated to Manor Royal industrial estate in Crawley, West Sussex. At the time the Manor Royal was in its infancy and Vent-Axia had fields opposite its offices. However, as the company grew Vent-Axia moved to the opposite corner of Fleming Way and Newtown Road, to larger premises on Manor Royal, which is where it is situated today. In 2013 Vent-Axia further invested in Crawley with the launch of three new production assembly lines creating 20 new site jobs.
Vent-Axia now employs 253 staff at its headquarters in Fleming Way, Crawley, West Sussex. A multi-million pound company, Vent-Axia’s innovations are present in a wide range of landmark projects from buildings in Her Majesty’s Royal Estates to the White House. As a result, the Vent-Axia brand has become a household name featuring annually in the UK Superbrands league table and holding the prestigious Royal Warrant.
“We are delighted to be celebrating our 80th Anniversary at Vent-Axia. From the very beginning, with Joe Akester’s invention of the world’s first electrically-operated window fan, Vent-Axia has been a company built on innovation. We have continued this ethos over the years, developing, expanding and innovating to create the very best in ventilation. This is a tradition that we are very proud to continue today with launch of our latest best in class products, as we look forward to the next 80 years ahead,” said Mark Hoskins, Managing Director at Vent-Axia.
Speaking at the event Henry Smith MP said: “I am thrilled that Vent-Axia, an innovative, locally-based, world-class company, is celebrating its 80th Anniversary. I am proud that this iconic and historic business continues to manufacturer in Crawley and wish the company continued success over the next 80 years and beyond.”
At the 80th Anniversary Celebration, guests toured the Crawley facilities seeing some of the latest fans manufactured on the production lines. This was followed by words from Vent-Axia’s Managing Director, Mark Hoskins, Henry Smith MP and 91-year-old former employee Edna Barnett. Edna worked with Vent-Axia from 1943 to her retirement in 1985 and delighted guests with anecdotes from her early days working with the company’s founder Joe Akester at Vent-Axia, as well as the exciting day she opened the envelope that contained a cheque to Vent-Axia from Winston Churchill.
“I told the accountant Bill Marsh that I had a cheque from Winnie. He asked, “Who?” and I said “Winston Churchill”. Bill told me not to pay that cheque in and to give it to the company secretary. The cheque was never paid in.” A replica of the cheque can be seen in Vent-Axia’s reception.
The focal point of the 80th Anniversary celebration was the burial of a metal time capsule, by the Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Raj Sharma and Henry Smith MP, outside the Vent-Axia reception, positioned equidistant between two trees. The time capsule is to be buried for 80 years and contains items that reflect Vent-Axia today, such as its innovative Lo-Carbon Svara, the UK’s first App-controlled bathroom fan and photos of the Vent-Axia team; plus objects that reflect the current time we live in, such as the current issues of local papers and a pound coin. The time capsule has been registered with The International Time Capsule Society to record its location, contents and the date it is to be opened.
Headquartered in Crawley, West Sussex and with more than 80 years as an influential industry leader, Vent-Axia continues to set the standard in ventilation. Each year the company supplies air management solutions for over half a million installations across the residential, commercial and industrial sectors in the UK and around the World.
