More Donations for Clay Creek Injured Fire Fighter
See this post to learn why we're donating.
I just talked with Bekah Shakespear, my sister who also grew up in Oak City and knows Camron and Melanie, AND she is also the very talented illustrator for Cobbogoth. She too will be donating her royalties made on the artwork in Cobbogoth for the next two months to the injured Clay Creek Fire fighter, and family.
Thanks, Bek!
Please keep spreading the word! All royalties on copies of Cobbogoth purchased from this link: https://www.createspace.com/3599957 will go to help injured fire fighter, Camron Nielson and his family.

Donations for Injured Fire Fighter
For those of you who don't know, I grew up in Oak City, Utah. That is a little bitty town down in Millard County that I love dearly. For the past week or two the Clay Springs fire has been burning through there, and it has broken my heart to see the damage caused. There have also been two fire fighters injured, one of which--the most severely injured--is Camron Nielson. He and his wife Melanie are not only still citizens of my home town, but they are both my former classmates, and Melanie is my little sister's best friend. When I heard the news about Camron, I wanted to help in whatever way I could. There has been a Zion's bank account opened in Camron's name, but since I'm not rich, whatever donation I make on my own won't make that big of a dent in the medical bills their family is sure to be facing. So, after talking to the CEO of Kinstone Publishing--the dashing Michael Clark--We've decided that what we
CAN
do, is offer something--a really great YA fantasy novel called Cobbogoth--in exchange for
your
donations.
Now, not only is Oak City my lovely home town and Camron and Melanie my old classmates, but one of the main characters in Cobbogoth happens to be a fire fighter. So this is all rather serendipitous, I think. :)
Alright, so here's the deal: For the next two months--July and August--all of the royalties I receive for Cobbogoth, if purchased from this link : https://www.createspace.com/3599957 will go to Camron Nielson and his family. I know buying one book may not seem like it will help that much--and of course you're not just limited to buying one copy--but if we all share this info with our friends and family, it could make a huge difference. So please, please, please share this post on facebook, twitter, your own blog, etc, and spread the word. Thanks!

Writing Gems #1: Basic Story Structure

I've decided to start something new on my blog. I'm calling it "Writing Gems" hence this post's title. I feel like I've learned a lot over the last six years, and I remember being at the beginning of writing Cobbogoth and feeling completely clueless about how to even start writing a novel. I researched and researched, read books, and attended conferences, and over a LONG time, I gleaned a lot of valuable knowledge.
Now, I know there are a few people following my blog, who are also aspiring writers, and I feel like if someone would've been willing to walk me through the steps of writing a novel, I would've been EXTREMELY grateful to them.
So, this is my way of sort of paying it forward as well as saying "thank you!" to all of you who have shown me and Cobbogoth so much support. Every so often I'm going to be posting videos and posts where I expound on some of the major things that have made writing much easier for me. If you're just starting out, and feel like you're a little clueless about how to begin your novel, hopefully these videos will come in handy!
Enjoy!

Book 2
Alright Everyone,
I might be premature in putting this out there, but I feel like I want to give you all an update on how Book 2 in the Cobbogoth series is coming. So far it's coming along much better than I expected. After having spent 5 years writing the first book, that's not really saying much. But, I suppose Cobbogoth was much more about learning how to write a book, and now that I've got that under my belt, things are moving along a lot faster and smoother than I anticipated.
That being said, KinStone Publishing is still planning on a late 2013 release, because all of the design work and everything still has to happen, which takes time. But, things are looking good otherwise.
I guess I'm mostly relieved, because I wasn't sure how quickly I was going to be able to write Book 2 on account of the fact that I've never written a second book in a series. However, what I'm finding is that part of the reason Cobbogoth took so long to write, is because I had to make my world fit in our world and with our world's rules in order to make it believable. Now that I'm in New Cobbogoth, I get to make up the rules. That's very liberating.
Unfortunately, hiccups can still happen along the way. For instance, I could get finished writing this first draft and my good friends (who know that I love them enough that they can tell me the truth) might inform me that what I thought was a work of genius when I was the only person reading it, is, in fact, complete rubbish. That would probably set me back a bit. But since I run everything by my husband--who bores easily when I read to him and so far has been pretty excited about what I've been reading him--I think we're in good shape.
Seriously though, I can't wait to introduce you all to the world of New Cobbogoth! Once I've completed the first draft, I'm fairly certain I can reveal Book 2's title to you all, which will thrill me to no end.
That said, what are all you aspiring writers working on right now? Post a link to your blog and I'd love to come check it out. It'll give me something to look forward to during my writing breaks! :)

"Other Souls" and Soul-deep Writing
So, I've had a few questions about where the "other soul" concept of my book came from, and I've decided that I'm finally going to answer them here.
The fact is, I took that concept from my own personal life. For as long as I can remember, I've felt like there was one person out there for me--just one. Call it soul mate/other soul/predestined, whatever, I've just always felt like I was meant to be with one specific person, and when we found each other, we'd both know it.
Well, fast forward 15 years, and I had a fairly significant experience that compounded that belief like, a million times. That experience affected me so much that dating in college was pretty much misery. I'm sure a lot of people feel that way, but imagine never being able to get past a first date without knowing the other person isn't for you--even if you like the guy/girl.
As you can imagine, I went on a lot of first dates, because it just didn't feel honest doing otherwise, especially when I knew the relationship wasn't going to go anywhere. Oh, there were a few guys I dated for longer than that, simply because I wanted it to work out. But if I'd been really honest with myself, deep down, I always knew they weren't the one.
All through those miserable dating years, everyone was always telling me that there was no such thing as soul mates--that you could marry any number of compatible partners and be perfectly happy. As much as I wanted to buy that concept with a particular boyfriend here or there, I just couldn't. Somehow my heart knew better.
Fast forward again to age 20--October 2003 to be exact--and in walks a rather dashing red-headed man. Never mind the fact that the moment I see him, a little voice in my head whispers: "there he is!" Never mind the fact that at first I don't even realize how physically attractive he is because all I can manage to notice is his soul, blaring out at me like a strobe light. And never mind the fact that he is the first guy to ever look into my eyes and actually see me; you know, the real me, my soul--core deep potential, flaws and all.
Sitting across from this guy on our first date, and feeling like I've known him all my life--like I've finally come home after a very long time--I know he's the one. And I later find out that he's known I was his "one and only" since before our first date.
So, after all that and eight years of more happiness than I could've possibly imagined, no one can tell me there isn't such a thing as soul mates. After all that, how could the idea of a soul mate not find it's way into my book?
Because of my own experiences with writing, I wonder about other authors while I'm reading their books. I can't help asking how much of their soul is in their writing? How much of what they write represents their core values, beliefs, or experiences? Is it even possible to write something as involved as a novel without pouring your soul into it?
What do you think? Have your beliefs and life experiences ever found their way into your own creative ventures?

Blog Tour Wrap Up
Well, the blog tour is over, and it was a great success! Thanks to all who participated and helped to spread the word about Cobbogoth. I'm really pleased with the reviews the first book in my series is getting, and can't wait to hear more of what you all think.
Congratulations to those of you who won signed copies of Cobbogoth from the various giveaways throughout the tour. It's always nice to get something free, and I have to say, I really enjoyed giving.
As for what's next, well, I'm still plugging away on Book 2. As soon as the first draft is finished, I believe I'll be able to tell you all a little more about it, which will be SWEET! Really, I'm so excited about this one. It's really interesting how different this writing process is turning out to be, because of all I learned while writing Cobbogoth.
Anyway, I'll try to be more regular about blogging, now that the tour is over. I really do enjoy blogging, I just feel like finishing Book 2 is more important right now. But don't worry, I'm learning quite a few things with this book as well, and I'll be doing some "writing" posts soon, for those of you who are aspiring writers.
Thanks again for all your support!

Alright folks,
So the Myth Chaser Monday's haven't been as well participated in as I'd hoped for, so I'm going to hold off on the Grand Prize giveaway for a while. Maybe I'll bring it back and try again later. Right now, I'm going to focus on writing Book 2. :)
