Baby Steps

When I was about five years into writing Cobbogoth, I still hadn't published, nor was I ready to. There were so many times I wondered if I was making any progress at all. I was only taking baby steps at first--the first five years of my son's life my diligent attempts to accomplish my goal to become an author were minuscule, to say the least. But having been a goal oriented person my whole life, I knew that if I didn't at least do something , I'd regret it. So I kept at it, as frustrating as it seemed sometimes.
When I reached that five year mark, however, I was surprised that I wasn't more discouraged, even though I hadn't reached my goal yet. That was because it was the first time I was able to look back and actually see how far I'd come since starting. I'd written at least seven working drafts of Cobbogoth, each one falling short of the story I wanted to tell, but teaching me such important writing lessons that eventually led me to finally writing the draft that became what Uncovering Cobbogoth is today--something that I'm very proud of.
Last year I applied this same life lesson to another goal I'd had for a long time. I started teaching myself to play the guitar in March and by August I was writing my own music. All I did was make sure I played at least a little bit each day.
Today, almost to the day, it's been nine years since I seriously started creating the world of Cobbogoth. Since self-publishing in 2011, and then getting picked up by Cedar Fort last year, I've learned SO MUCH!!! I know myself better as a writer, as an individual, and as a mother. I'm more confident in my ability to listen to and trust my instincts as a storyteller. I'm much better at weeding through criticism to find the stuff that will truly make my story better, and have no qualms tossing all of the rest. I'm halfway through the final edit of my second book, and half way through the first draft of another. I also have two more books outlined, and half a dozen other story ideas waiting for me to get to them. AND, I've had some incredible experiences and met some amazing people, all of which, I would've never encountered had I not become an author.
Sitting here and looking back over the last nine years, I can't tell you how grateful I am that I started where I was, and never gave up. Especially during the times where my circumstances only allowed me to take baby steps--which was almost always--because, regardless of their size, each step was moving me closer to my goal.
We all have goals, and we all have busy lives, and it's so easy to let those busy lives stop us from accomplishing our goals. We tell ourselves that as soon as [insert crazy event happening in your life right now] is over, then I'll start working on that thing I've wanted to do or become since I was ten. I say, why put off till tomorrow, what you can start taking baby steps toward today. It doesn't have to be a lot, just do something every day. One day all of those baby steps are going to add up to the sum of something truly amazing--something that will never happen if you never start.

Back to Work
Hey all,
So now that the queasiness and exhaustion has passed, I'm back to work on Book 2. Just thought you'd like to know. ;-) So far it's coming along nicely. Mine and Bekah's goal is to have The Lemorian Crest published before this baby comes in July. This is vital, because all mothers know that the only things you get done with a brand new baby are 1) keeping said baby alive and 2) sleep. And, of course, #2 always takes a decided backseat to #1.
That's all I really have for right now. I'll be sure to keep you updated, especially as we get closer to releasing Book 2. So excited to finally get to share it with you all!

Excellent News and My Album's Title Song
Hey All,
So it's been a while, and last time I posted, I believe I promised you some news. Well, I can do even better than that for you! I will tell you the news I've been keeping and share the title song for my indie-folk album with you.
First off, the news! So, I'm pretty sure most of my readers don't know this--I don't think I've ever shared it on here before--but I'm a mom to a truly fantastic kid. He's been an only child for nine years. My husband and I didn't do that on purpose. We LOVE kids. Well, back in November, my husband and I found out that we are very unexpectedly expecting our second child. After nine years and a few false alarms, it turns out my son isn't going to be an only child anymore.
To say that our family is excited about this news is a severe understatement. Because of the things we've gone through over the last decade, I honestly believed I'd never get to have another biological baby. Consequently, I've been spending the last 6+ weeks taking it VERY easy so that we can keep this baby.
And . . . (drum roll) . . . so far so good! We're 14 weeks along and still prego! Huzzzzzzah!!!!!
Because of this very unexpected but extremely welcome development in my life, I have had to cut out all excess stress, and therefore, I won't be attending any school visits/signing/anything extra that could get my nervous system too worked up. This is on doctor's/husband's orders. But, don't fret Cobbogoth fans, I'm still writing--as if I could stop--and my sister and I are still shooting to have Book 2 The Lemorian Crest out sometime this summer. Preferably before this little tyke is born.
With that said, here is another song I've written for my indie-folk album. It will be the title song for my album and is called Like Home to Me. This song is the first song I wrote when I started writing songs with the guitar last August. I wrote it as a gift for my husband's birthday. It's rough and will sound much better once we get the other bells and whistles involved for the recording, but hopefully you get enough of the gist of the song to let me know what you think.
Alright folks! So that's it for now. I'll keep you updated on both the album and Book 2. It's going to be a fantastic year!!!

"A Winter's Lullaby"
Hey Retro Readers,
I wrote another song for the indie album I told you about. This one is more Christmasy in honor of the "most wonderful time of the year!" I'd love to hear what you all think of it. Last time you guys were great! Although I think the main thing you gave me was encouragement, which I have to tell you is invaluable during a creative endeavor like this, so thank you!
A little backstory: this song was inspired by "Song for a Winter's Evening" (The Sarah McLachlan version) and the Robert Frost poem "Passing through the Woods on a Winter's Evening." So it's kind of like a wintery love song/sensory experience. I want the tone to be tender and full of wintery beauty, with a kind of a homesickness ache. With that in mind, I'd love to get your feedback. Did you feel any of those things while you were listening?
Regardless, I hope you enjoy it! And thanks for taking this fun journey with me. ;-)
Lots of Love and Christmas wishes,

The Swoony Awards!
Hello all!
I know I have been MIA again, but there are exciting things afoot at the Clark house these days, and it has required all of my focus the past two months. Don't worry, I won't be so vague about whats going on around here come January.
That being said, Cedar Fort has alerted me to some exiting news! Uncovering Cobbogoth has been nominated for a "Swoony Award!" Voting is open right now, and if you liked my book, you can go vote for it here. Really, I'd be super honored and so very grateful if you took a few minutes out of your crazy December and voted for us. Right now you can find me at #196. It would make my Christmas if something wonderful came from all of this.
Anyway, other than that, if I don't make it back here before Christmas, I hope each of your holidays is very merry and bright!
Love,

Two New Projects -- One Very Unexpected
So it's been a while. Why? you ask. Well, because, over the last month or so, I have been emerged in one of the coolest creative periods of my life so far. And today I wanted to jump in here and give you all an update on what's happening. First off, Book 2 has been put on hold for a minute. There are some kinks between myself and my publisher needing to be worked out. However, that being said, I'm still planning on a Spring/Summer 2015 release.
The good news is that these kinks have given me a really cool opportunity to fully outline and get back to work on a book I've been working on since I finished my first draft of Book 2 last spring. Having spent the last eight years + on the Cobbogoth series, I'm really excited about this project, because it's pretty different, but still fantasy. Actually, it mixes a few of my favorite things -- love, myth, and Victorian England. I know, exciting, right?!!! This project is presently called The Blessing Curse. I've finished the outline and am about half way done with the first draft. You guys, I am SO seriously enjoying myself! When I have a complete draft, I'll tell you a little more about it, because I think it's going to be suh-weet!
Lastly, the final project I've been working on is something I've wanted to do for the last fifteen years. And . . . (drum roll!) . . . I feel like I have finally learned enough about technology, myself, and an instrument in order to do it. So, I'm embarking on a new journey of writing/composing/recording my very first music album! Woo-hoo! So pumped about this! I think the reason I've been loving it so much, is because, unlike with my writing, there is absolutely no pressure for it to actually be good.
:-) At this point, I'm just doing it to have fun.
Now, you may be asking yourself how this all came about. Let me just say that I'm more surprised than anyone. In fact, after being a singer all my life, I actually thought I'd lost my voice due to some health issues I've had the last three years. However, one of my dear friends asked me to sing at her wedding last summer, and that kind of gave me the motivation I needed to see if I couldn't get my voice back. I'm sure you already know this, but the voice is a muscle just like your triceps and quads, and, as we all discover as the years fly by, if you don't use it, you lose it. :-( Well, during a break in my edits for Uncovering Cobbogoth back in February, I started teaching myself the guitar--something else I've always wanted to do. Surprisingly, I took to it like a duck to water, and playing everyday, combined with singing the songs I was playing, my voice started coming back. Woo-hoo! It's still not full capacity yet, but I'm learning a few tricks here and there that will strengthen it and give me more control over my voice, inspire of the current health issues.
Anyway, back in August, my husband and I bought me my very own new guitar, and all of the sudden, songs just started coming to me. I've always fiddled around with writing music, because my mom did it all during my upbringing, but most of my previous songs were pretty embarrasing, and honestly, I've been through piano, the violin, the trumpet, and despite singing my entire life, I just couldn't seem to figure out what my genre would suit me best. It wasn't until I fell in love with artists like Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile, Of Monsters and Men, Mindy Gledhill, and SHEL that I realized what kind of music I love best and that worked best with my voice and style. So I've decided to do a sort of folksy "Storyteller's" album, which totally makes sense, right? :-)
So now, since I'm really excited about this unexpected project . . . (Another drum roll, please) . . . here's a very rough version of one of my first songs to let you see what I've been up to. :-) This is one of the first songs I wrote after getting my new guitar. It's called Wings, and I think it's my favorite one so far because I wrote it for my very own darlin' lover-man. (Yep. I really call him that. And I am not ashamed!)
Now, a little about this song, I have plans to add 2 and 3 part harmonies to the "da-da-dee-dum" part and chorus, but for some reason, I just couldn't figure out how to sing three parts at once for this video. ;-) Just kidding. I really like the harmonies though, and they will be on the iTunes recording when I finally get that done . . . sometime in the future. Like I said, this is a "no pressure" creative project. :-)
Anyway, be sure to let me know what you think in the comments below! And thanks for sharing this new creative adventure with me.
P.S. I close my eyes a lot when I sing. Sorry. :-}

Author of the Month!
Today is a good day! The very lovely Carol Brinkman (I visited her 6th grade class back in May) contacted me on Facebook today to tell me that I am the author of the month at Fillmore Middle School. What an honor! Here's a shout out to all my Cobbogoth friends there! I still have all your pictures hanging on my office wall, btw, inspiring me to keep writing. :-)
I love all my readers, but there's something about kid readers and their response to the world of Cobbogoth that really makes all the grueling writing days worth it.
Thanks for the honor, Fillmore Middle School!

Working the Costco Circuit
Hey all!
So this week has been a busy one for myself and Uncovering Cobbogoth. We had three Costco book signings, and while Thursday and Friday were a little slow, my signing today once again rekindled my faith in the rising generation. Not that I was doubting them before, but let's face it, a lot less kids like to read since technology took over and stated ruling the world. :-) But you guys, I met so many fantastic kids in South Ogden today! They were eager and bright-eyed and so excited about the prospect of entering a brand new literary world. It was so fun, and while I still get super nervous right before book signings, it doesn't take long before I'm swept away and put at ease by the kindness and enthusiasm of strangers.
I wish I'd taken some pics at today's signing, but it's really hard to take pictures of yourself and fans, while you're signing books. I did, however, want to show you this super cool thing I've been doing, because the kids and parents have Oooo'd and Ahhh'd over it, so it's a real crowd pleaser.
But, alas, it requires an bit of back story.
So when I was really in the trenches of creating the Cobbogoth world, I forced myself to get down on the nitty-gritty of this ancient society I'd been hanging in for, like, over half a decade. I got so close and personal with them, in fact, that I started to work out what I wanted the characters of their written language to look like. And so, in the midst of all this, I thought to myself, "self, what if you had your very own Cobbogothian signature that you could use at book signings, if you ever get there?" And my self replied "What do you mean if? What kind of positive thinking is that?" :-) (But honestly, there were moments that myself and I argued quite heatedly about whether or not Cobbogoth would ever make it's debut in the world! Eight years is a really long time.)
So anyway, earlier this summer, after my first couple signings, I had one of those surreal moments of actualization where I realized I was actually doing the thing I'd been dreaming of doing for much longer than it took me to write Uncovering Cobbogoth. That's when I remembered my idea and started working out my very own genuine Cobbogothian signature.
This is what I finally came up with:
Pretty cool, huh? Of course the black signature is my actual signature, but I think my Cobbogothian signature turned out very . . . Cobbogothian, if I do say so. But I'm actually the only one who would really know, right? :-)
Anyway, the kids dig it, and I quite like it myself. I've decided I'm going to fine-tune the entire Cobbogothian alphabet, so that fans can get on my website and figure out their own Cobbogothian signature. I'll be sure to let you all know when I get it finished.
Before I go, a HUGE shout out to the extremely nice and seriously cool people who work at Costco! I'm not kidding, you have all been the nicest, and Scott, Michele, Diane, and Darlene (The Flower Lady) at the Sandy Costco, you guys made me want to hang out there all of the time. :-)
So thanks!

And . . . We're Back!
Hey Cobbogoth Friends!
So it's been a crazy summer to say the least. I've been so busy with family stuff, book signings, book blog tours, and keeping my son busy and entertained that I haven't had time to blog. But, never fear! I am back from the abyss of summer, and not only have I read some great books this summer that I want to review, but I've got some fantastic ideas for Writing Gems I'll be posting soon.
Most importantly, I am officially back to work on Book 2 in the Cobbogoth series. I was able to get some editing done here and there, but only made it through the first 100 pages this summer. That being said, it was enough to wet my appetite and I've been chomping at the bit for school to start so I could get cranking through this baby!
And, so here we are! I just wanted to let you all know that I didn't die over the last three months. After releasing Uncovering Cobbogoth this spring and all the hullabaloo that goes with that, I wanted/needed to put writing aside for the most part and just focus solely on my family and a few other things that got put on the back burner while all of that excitingness was going on.
In the meantime, I've got a few cool things coming up this week! Three book signings, to be exact.
Me and some of my lovely family who came to see me at Sandy Costco! I love them all so much!
Thursday: I'll be signing at the Spanish Fork Costco from 11-2
Friday: I'll be signing at the Sandy Costco from 11-2
Saturday: I'll be signing at the So. Ogden Costco from 12-3
So come by and see me!!! And thanks to all who dropped by to see me at the Sandy Costco this Saturday! It was tons of fun and every time I do a signing, I'm always amazed at the kindness and enthusiasm of strangers.
All in all, it's great to be back!
Until next time!
