Why I am Totally Crushing on Clea DuVall
Hello Lovelies,Sorry, no book review today... I totally got caught up in theLizzie Borden Chronicles, which was pretty
awesome! For those who don't know, it is a fictitious imagining of what happens to the Borden Sisters after Lizzie (played by Christina Ricci) is acquitted for the murder of her parents. We all know the old rhyme: Lizzie Borden took and ax, gave her mother 40 wacks, and when he saw what she had done, she gave her father 41.It is dark, gruesome, intense, and most importantly (for me, anyway) brings back one of my favorite actresses, (no, not Ricci, though she is totally awesome!) Clea DuVall.I first began my lady love for DuVall when I saw her as Stokes in The Faculty. I didn't know then what it was about the edgy goth girl that called to my angsty teenage self, but I was hooked and as I was still young and naive, I connected that feeling to the actress who played Stokes, the remarkable Clea DuVall. I have pretty avidly followed her career and despite her many bad film choices, (Ghosts of Mars, 13 Conversations about One Thing) she always delighted me!No matter how awful the movie, Clea calls to me. I suspect it was because of this girl-crush that many of my friends in my younger days wondered if I wasn't swinging for the other team. And as I reflect on it, watching her performance in The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, and wondering why she isn't a bigger name actress, I came to a bit of an epiphany. My epiphany reflects on two points: 1. Why do I love Clea DuVall? and 2. Why doesn't the rest of the world?Well, I have the first one nailed. I love Clea, because she portrays strong women who, while they may not know how/ where they fit in the world, they do know who they are and when push comes to shove are ok with who they are. Whether she is playing a woman who was written as powerful (like Bashira of Ghosts of Mars) or awkward characters like Ginny in Identity, these women have a certain sense ofconfidence. She rarely gets a lead role, and is often cast in the lesser roles for women, despite doing an excellent job. Which leads me to wonder on epiphany number 2.Why doesn't the rest of the world see what I see, when they watch Clea perform? She has only been nominated fortwo awards, (Best Actress in 2005 Satellite Awards) and won the SAG for Best
Performance by a Cast (Not even really for her, sadly). I wondered if it had something to do with her looks. Even I admit she is only "pretty in a certain light". But then so is Hillary Swank, and she has won two Oscars. There are hundreds of actors who fall into that category.I wondered if Clea DuVall's lack of recognition has something to do with the the types of characters she plays. She rarely gets the lead role, but then there are awards for that too. Is it because she doesn't have enough experience? With 78 credits under her belt, I doubt that is the case. So what is it?Is it possibly because of the way she plays her roles? That should be lauded, right? I mean, it is that raw fresh honesty that I love. That strong, even when I don't fit in, persona that carries across all of her characters is why I have so avidly followed her career. But what if that doesn't resonate with the rest of the world? We are seeing more and more strong female characters in film and books. But they often take on a stereotypical strength, the Able Annie who can do it all, the killer queen, the vicious vixen, the butch B*tch, and the mean girl. Clea doesn't play that. She plays a variety of troubled women, from the looking for approval Laura from How To Make A Monster, to the Empathetic Spinster Emma of The Lizzie Borden Chronicles. Her characters are probably the most realistic representation of women I have seen in any entertainment. They are flawed (as are we all) but they still have strengths. Is it possible that she is just too real for the world to handle?Would love to hear your thoughts. Do you love Clea DuVall, hate her, have no idea who she is? Let us know in the comments below. And until next time,Keep Reading!

Meet The Author interview with T.J. Blake
Hello Lovelies,Today we get to me the thrilling T. J. Blake, who is an indie author in the UK, most known for his thriller and horror novels. Currently living in Surrey, T. J. Blake by day is a copywriter for a digital marketing company and by night an author.Blake has self-published two books from ‘The Endurance Series’ – ‘Endurance’and ‘Endurance: Apocalypse’, a standalone mystery thriller novel‘The Author’ and his brand new psychological thriller,‘Deception’T. J. is currently writing the final book to ‘The Endurance Series’ – due for release in 2017.Without further ado, let's get to the interview! Welcome to An Angell's Life, TJ. What is the current book you are promoting?
The current book I am promoting is my brand new psychological thriller, Deception: A Love of Lies. This book of mine was in the works for a long time, and I decided to begin working on Deception for my final Creative Writing assignment at university – which was then named ‘The Dog Walk’. For that assignment, I received a First (the highest grade) and that made me determined to complete the book and self-publish it for all my fans to read. Two years later, I completed writing Deception. It took a long time to complete, but it was a thrilling experience – being wrapped up in the world of Deception was exciting. What I enjoyed most about Deception is entering the mind of my main character, Billy, who is a fascinating character with a unique mind. Without saying too much about Billy and the story overall, he is not considered to be a typically ‘good’ protagonist, but he’s someone that you can’t help but enjoy following; even if some of what he does is not entirely acceptable or considered ‘normal’.Ah, a morally ambiguous hero is always entertaining! How do you write your books? When I write a book, I always work from my notes; which are usually stored on my iPhone. These notes are usually in the structure from beginning to end, but as I work over months on this, I alter the story – by thinking of effective twists and randomly writing on the notes if I think of a good idea when I’m out and about, or a new character to incorporate into the story.Once everything is planned and I personally feel that the story is good enough, I will then start working on it; writing, editing and telling family and friends about the basics of the story. Thankfully for me, my parents and girlfriend are always very honest with me – if they don’t like something, then they tell me.What is one great lesson you have learned as a writer? As a writer, I’ve learnt a lot of things; even if I’m still reasonably new to being an indie author. One of the key lessons I have learnt is that you can’t do everything yourself. On my debut novel, Endurance (2013), I tried doing everything myself; the editing, the cover, the self-publishing (with no advice), everything. But when it came to the end result, I wasn’t happy, and that’s when I knew I needed help. For my books, I’ve worked with talented artists, I partnered with quality editors, I’m never afraid to ask for marketing support, and I always ask the opinion of others on my books. Getting support and help from other people is important in writing – collaboration is the art of writing and self-publishing.Great lessons. I think all art is collaboration to some degree. What is your next project? My next project is to complete the final book to my unpredictable and fast-paced horror, dystopian book series, The Endurance Series. Currently, the book series is made up of two books, Endurance and Endurance: Apocalypse (2014). I have already begun working on the final Endurance book – which will be available next year.Tell us something unique about you. This is certainly unique, or odd, or unacceptable, but I don’t particularly like fruit. I know fruit is good for you and you should certainly eat it every day, but I just don’t like it much at all. I can drink certain fresh fruit drinks (without the pulp, I hate pulp in drinks!) and I can eat certain fruits (not many), but I don’t enjoy the taste. I’m not sure if it’s down to the texture of them, but me and fruit do not get on – which is ironic, as I used to work on the fruit and vegetable section at a supermarket during my college days.Perhaps it was all that overexposure during college! Well, thank you for joining us today and sharing a bit about yourself with us.Want to learn more aboutTJ Blake? Book Review: Blade of the Destroyer: The Last Bucelarii: Book 1 by Andy Peloquin
Genre:Epic FantasySynopsis:The Hunter of Voramis is the perfect assassin: Ruthless, Unrelenting, Immortal. Yet he is haunted by lost memories, bonded to a cursed dagger that feeds him power yet denies him peace of mind. Within him rages an unquenchable need for blood and death. When he accepts a contract to avenge the stolen innocence of a girl, the Hunter becomes the prey. The death of a seemingly random target sends him hurtling toward destruction, yet could his path also lead to the truth of his buried past?My Take:If you love Anti-heroes, then you will love The Hunter. A hard crusty outer shell, a master killer, but inside there is a man who is tormented and desperate to find his place in society. The author does a brilliant job creating a magnificent other realm. I love the details of the different religious sects, the different scents of the city, and the general world building. It is brilliantly done as seen through the eyes of the Hunter. The author, as many fantasy authors do, uses a wide range of less common words. I love this, but there were quite a few times where his word choice, though technically correct, left me scratching my head. For example, he uses gore a lot, and often in relation to slit throats. Technically, it isn't wrong, but generally gore is associated with more than just blood. Chunks of flesh, entrails, guts, more than just blood, hence the saying blood and gore. Sometimes it is associated with clotting and drying blood, but it isn't typically associated with fresh blood.Another time, he uses swarthy to describe a dark-skinned prostitute. Technically swarthy means dark skinned, but it is typically used to describe people who have had their skin darkened by the sun like pirates, soldiers, archaeologists. Skin that is darkened by the sun has a very different texture than skin that is just naturally dark. I would have gone with something more like dusky, ebony, or sable as they are all softer words associated with women of beauty. The book could've used a bit more polishing, as there were several grammatical errors, but the story is so enticing that for all but the biggest grammarians, it is passable.Despite these gripes, which slowed down my reading process, I really loved the characters. I adored Farida, was intrigued by Celicia, entranced by the Beggar Priest, and torn by the Hunter, a villain or at least a man without a conscience at the beginning, but as we learn, he is a killer with his own personal moral code. As a fan of characters like Riddick and Shadoe Van Ives of The Enemy Within, I am eager to read the sequel, Lament of the Fallen, and follow The Hunter on his quest to discover himself.Do you want to giveBlade of the Destroyera try? Grab it from Amazon for only $3.99 or read from Kindle Unlimited for free.Until Next Time,Keep Reading!

Character Spotlight Yetunde from An Ode to My Mother by Segilola Salami.
Hello Lovelies,Today we get to meet a delightful character from Segilola Salami's An Ode to My MotherThis is a heart-warming story about the power of a mother's love; truly an ode to women and mothers all over the world. It is a captivating and emotional story that talks about love and loss! Follow baby Yetunde as she narrates her mother's ode to her grandmother. It is the Yoruba praise poetry for a mother known as the Oriki Iya.Yetunde is also thrilled and delighted by the ancient Yoruba tale passed down to her by her mother about Labake, a young maiden who was kidnapped to be forced to marry a warrior chief. Will Iya Labake save her child in time? Is Iya Labake just a simple defenceless mother? Or . . .?This is a short story dedicated to past, present and future mothers, a perfect Mother's day present! This book is mostly in English and all Yoruba words are translated, so everyone can enjoy the book fully.See what other's have to say about the bookThis is more than a children's book . . . it is a powerful book to be enjoyed by the whole family
Main CharacterName: YetundeAge:9 months oldGender:FemaleA little bit about Yetunde:Yetunde is the only child to her mom Iya Yetunde and they both live in a flat in London. Iya Yetunde wants to ensure that Yetunde does not forget her roots, so teaches Yetunde how to speak Yoruba and tells her African folktales.Yetunde speaks fluent Ancient Angelic. This is the language of Angels that all babies can speak but adults call it baby babble. This is how babies communicate with each other with a dash of telepathy.Yetunde understands and can speak a little bit of Yoruba and English but the words don't come out properly yet.Because her mom speaks to her like her own person rather than just a baby, Yetunde is actually quite smart and knowledgeable. This is seen in the way Yetunde narrates her day in the story.Want to giveAn Ode to my Mothera read? Book Review: Breeder by Casey Hays
Genre:ScifiSynopsis: Nestled within the folds of a war-torn and ruined world, there lies a village. It has no name; it is full of secrets. Its women survive because they seem to have found a remedy for war; its men survive because the women let them. They all survive because Fate allows it.Kate never thought much about Fate until she decided not to believe in it anymore. Destined to become a breeder, she wakes up on her sixteenth birthday determined to defy this duty at all cost. It is a heavy price. For her open rebellion, Mona, the Village counsel leader, drags her to the Pit and forces her to confront her mate for the first time.He is not what Kate expected.Despite Mona's fierce punishments for Kate's disobedience, the tug of her heart grows stronger; it beckons her away from this life and lures her toward the truth about herself, about her village, and about the boy assigned to be her mate. The questions bring her hope... but the answers? They terrify her.My Take:This book is strange, and I mean that in a good way. I had picked this up some time ago (don't remember when or how, but probably won it or got it for free.) and I never got around to reading it because I have become a cover whore. Yeah, I know, you should never judge a book by it's cover. And I don't judge it by that, but I do tend to let covers lead me in what to read next. And this cover didn't inspire. But I felt a need to get rid of some books and figured I should at least take a look at it before I removed it from my list.... After all, something must have inspired me to pick it up in the first place.and I am so glad I did!!!It starts out feeling like a historical piece. The descriptions sucked me back into the mindset of books like the Jubal Sackett Series. Then it had this fantastical element, I wondered if this was just the writer's creative imaginings of Amazonian women. Then the truth was revealed! AGH!!! Crazy! The author does a great job with story flow, and adding totally unexpected twists, and creating deep and rich characters. Like the lottery, I could totally see something like this book actually happening in a post-apocalyptic world. I couldn't get enough, and cannot wait to read the next two books in the series! You should definitely not judge this book by it's cover! Want to giveBreedera go? It is available through Amazon's KU, or for $2.99Until next time,Keep Reading!

Meet the Author with Christi Smit
Hello Lovelies,Do I have a treat for you today, an interview with the delightfully quirky Christi Smit. Born in a field, appearing fully-grown and ready for the world. Always suspected that his parents were extraterrestrials in human suits, but could never prove it. He is horrible at promoting himself. He is also well aware of is uncanny resemblance to a hairy turnip. One of the first men to ever eat his way out of trouble, he is a lover of all things Science Fiction, and would love to be abducted by aliens one day. Although he dreads the idea of anal probing, he realizes that he might have to take one for the team to get out of the galaxy. Can be found in his study, secretly drawing unicorns with his most favorite crayons. "Who has my blue crayon?" can often be heard echoing throughout his humble home.Welcome to An Angell's Life, Christi! How are you?I am fine thank you, and you?I am doing stupendous. Thank you for asking! What is the current book you are promoting?I am currently promoting my debut novel Gamma Nine while I am in the process of writing Book 2 in the series.
What inspired this book?My love for Science Fiction and the fantastical inspired me. But it goes so much deeper than just that. My answer could be hundreds of words long but I will try and keep it as brief as possible. My inspiration came in many forms, from my love for the genre to my hobbies as an avid video gamer and movie monster. My future wife was also one of the largest influences, her encouragement got me to put pen to paper, and my inner alien carried it further. There is still so much more to come though. I am only on my first series, having just finished my first novel, but there are many more ideas and stories I want to share. This is but the first step in a long plan of connecting with others in multiple genres and sharing my words with them.I also draw influence from the world around me. I love that you are so brimming with ideas and excitement for writing! If you could have your book made into a movie, who would you want to direct it?J.J. Abrams. The man brought Star Trek back to the masses and gave Star Wars the rebirth it needed. The man knows his art, and none can come close at this point.I agree, Abrams is sort of a given for a great Sci-fi! If your book were made into a movie, who would you cast?Nathan Fillion. If you ever watched anything he ever acted in, you would be a super fan.OOHHH!!! I am so a super fan of Nathan Fillion! He is just amazing. What is your next project?Book 2 in the Gamma Nine series and after the series comes to a close I have a one shot about....some things need to remain a surprise. But it is very different from the Gamma Nine novels and universe. How do you write your books?I am what some refer to as a free-writer. I do not plan ahead, I only get ideas as the story develops that I either use or do not use. I sometimes, like with Book 2, do not know where it will end yet. But I am excited about the journey. The journey is half the fun of writing, am I right? Where do you come up with your stories?Everything I hear, touch, feel or see can inspire me to write and helps my imagination come up with new things. What is one great lesson you have learned as a writer?Do not spread yourself too thin, unless you can excel in every project. Focus on one thing and anything connected to it. Fragmenting your mind into multiple projects is the fastest way to burn out and that will only set you back.Sage advice, and one I struggle with constantly. So many story ideas, so little time! What is one thing you hate about being a writer? That feeling of complete exhaustion after a good week of writing. My brain can only handle so much creativity before it starts shutting down. From Friday to Sunday I am a useless lump of matter unable to do most things except the normal routines. If you could never write again, what would you do?Race car driver. Obviously.Well, of course! Tell us something unique about you:I have three nipples. Kidding! There is nothing unique about me. I am a single voice in a chorus of millions. I am just glad to be amongst everyone, sharing stories and working together to reach more people.Thank you so much for joining us today Christi, I think most of us will agree that you are delightfully unique in your entertaining personality!Want to see what books inspire Christi? Poetry Corner: My Man
Show me a man who's charming and smart.[image error]Someone to love with all of my heart.Someone who's strong, caring and warm.Doesn't need a body of such great form.Show me a man who can love only me.A man who's mine for all time to be.Someone to spend the rest of my lifewith when he makes me his wife.A man who I can't live without.Who's kisses would thrill me inside and out.Show me a man who'll forever be true. This man, my love, can only be you.Until next time,Keep Reading!
