A to Z Blogging Challenge: F

Fields
My childhood was spent in the weeds,
in fields of untamed wheat growing blonde,
in grasses wide enough to call into.
The air was uncluttered.
Long fingers of stratus floated
like angel hair.
A wild place
spreads itself out into the open,
fallow and forgotten,
filling the world with a voice,
whispering
I am here
find me

Excavations
Somewhere, on the other
side of the planet,
they discover lost cities
on the silk route to China.
Somewhere they recover
the tomb of a pharaoh
dead four thousand years.
From my back porch, I
find that the rain
has stopped and that the lilacs,
which have burst suddenly
into bloom, fill the air
with the taste of purple.
The grass peculates green
and the dandelions sing,
yellow as little suns.
Somewhere, they unwrap
an Incan mummy and unravel
the mysteries of Atlantis.
I dig into the newly opened sky,
uncovering the archeology of clouds.

Blogging A to Z Challenge: D

The Dreams of Old Locomotives
whistle up the wind, blow grass under the warmblack belly of steel.
The clicking wheels are a songacross the heartland, a songof arrival, the lyricmovement of one place to the nextover tracks that bracethe low flat prairies, connectingscarce trees. Tracks that rollinto green hills. The wheels listone way and the other over talltrestles and five-step rivers, past the graveyards that skirtcities, crossing town over townnestled in the temporary lull of sleep.
The long whistle singsa lullaby tothe empty street where the streetlampguards the gray roof and the front porch.
Those who sit and watchthe signal light flash its brightred warning and feelthe rumble of the sleekheated body as it curvesalong the river must always wonder--Which direction, which directionand can I go in that direction, too?

Blogging A to Z challenge
Okay, I'm in. My muse, Boo, told me I've got to do it. She can be pretty insistent. So, even as my inner critic Zelda tells me I've sprung a leak in the thinking part of my brain, I've decided to go for it.The challenge is to write a blog six days a week, Monday through Saturday, for the month of April. The posts must be written in alphabetical order, each post corresponding to a letter of the alphabet.
Because April is National Poetry month, I've decided to post a poem a day for the challenge, using titles from A to Z. The first poem, Alphabet, will be coming at you next Monday.
If you'd like to learn more about the challenge, or if you'd like to join in, check out Blogging A to Z
