“In the morning, a thin fog blanketed the heath that persisted in the copses and on the meres even after the sun hesitantly crawled over the horizon, and they felt themselves forlorn in a silent land that dared not fully wake. No cattle could be seen in the hazy fields, and the singing birds and their own horses were their only living company. After they saddled their horses and
squeezed into their chainmail, Teagan quietly prayed in prostration before the divine sun, and Otto and Haaken joined him for the brief ritual. Octavia observed them while she re-stringed her longbow, and intercepted Haaken when the procedure was complete.
“Had not taken you for a believer.”, she quietly prodded.
“Most days, the sun rises just fine without me doing that.”
“It required encouragement today?”
“No. But they do.” He nodded his head towards the others. “They’re not stupid. Even if that Ryddau lied and it’s half the number he claimed, we’re still in deep shit. We rely on the men of Argon. An unknown quantity of unknown quality. I don’t think a little sunshine is going to help.”, he sighed. “…but maybe I’m wrong!”
“You, wrong? Has that ever happened before?”, Octavia replied in pretend disbelief.
“Such claims are disputed.”
