The 2015 OSTraining Report

This week marks six years since we launched online training here at OSTraining. And, it's now nearly ten years since we started training people to use open source software.

It's humbling to think that some of you have been keeping us in business since 2006.

If you're a business owner, you've seen both crazy years and quiet years. 2015 was a crazy year for us and filled with major turning points. So many in fact, that it took me until February to write this report!

Here's a look back at OSTraining in 2015 and a look forward to 2016.

Add Custom JavaScript into your WordPress Site

In some situations, you may need to add custom Javascript to your site. Normally, this would involve modifying your theme files.

However there is a less intrusive alternative. "Header and Footer Scripts" is a plugin to add custom JavaScript to WordPress without modifying your theme.

In this tutorial, I'm going to show you how this useful plugin works.

You Should Use the Drupal Security Review Module

There are two really useful checklist modules in Drupal:

The SEO Checklist module gives you a rundown of all the search-engine optimization fixes you can make.
The Security Review module automatically tests for easy-to-make security errors.

In this video, taken from our Drupal 7 Security class, Robert introduces the Security Review module. He shows you how to fix some of the most common errors found by the module, such as "Base URL is not set in settings.php" and "Some files and directories in your install are writable". Even if you think your site is safe, give the Security Review module and you may well find something you missed.

What Are WordPress Template Tags?

In this video, we're going to take a look at WordPress template tags.

If you're a PHP developer, you'll recognize that template tags are simply functions. They are used to either do something or return something inside your WordPress template files.

WordPress template tags are often clearly and simply named. For example, here's the tag used to display the author of the current post or page:

Doug's Success Story with OSTraining

When you give personalized, hand-holding mentoring and support, you get to know some of your students really well. I remember when Doug Beale came to OSTraining in 2012 and I started helping him with his first sites. Anyone could have seen that Doug was getting the most out of our training because he was working hard to master his web design skills.
